Nathan and Ryan close out the Heisei era with Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995), one of the most emotional and consequential films in the entire franchise. With Godzilla undergoing a catastrophic nuclear meltdown and facing his most terrifying enemy yet—born from the Oxygen Destroyer itself—the stakes have never been higher. The hosts discuss the film's apocalyptic tone, its brutal monster designs, the tragic fate of Junior, and how Toho deliberately framed this as a true ending for the King of the Monsters. It's epic, grim, and surprisingly heartfelt kaiju cinema.

From Astro Boy to Gundam to real-world robots like ASIMO and Pepper, Japan's fascination with robots runs deep. This week, the Krewe is joined by author, cultural commentator, & robot enthusiast Matt Alt to explore how robots became heroes instead of threats in Japanese pop culture and how those sci-fi dreams quietly shaped Japan's modern relationship with technology, AI, and everyday automation. From giant mecha and cyborg icons to robot cafés and beyond, we dig into why Japan seems so comfortable living alongside machines in an episode that's equal parts nostalgia, culture, and future tech.------ About the Krewe ------The Krewe of Japan Podcast is a weekly episodic podcast sponsored by the Japan Society of New Orleans. The various words for “divorce” in Japanese—rien, enkiri, fūfu wakare, rikon—reflect how the socially constructed institutions of marriage and family, along with their dissolutions, have been understood in Japanese history and jurisprudence. Employing a broad definition of divorce as the end of a romantic union sanctioned by law, social custom, or mutual agreement, Bold Breaks: Japanese Women and Literary Narratives of Divorce explores the shifting attitudes toward divorce in literature by women from the Heian (794–1185) to Heisei (1989–2019) periods. The collection features writing by renowned authors Tamura Toshiko (1884–1945), Uno Chiyo (1897–1996), and Tsushima Yūko (1947–2016), who used divorce as a literary device to enable their female protagonists to take bold steps toward new lives. A coda explores more contemporary views on marriage, divorce, and romantic love in the work of novelists Itoyama Akiko (1966–) and Kawakami Mieko (1976–) and poet Saihate Tahi (1986–). A wide-ranging introduction provides an overview of the historical, legal, and literary significance of divorce in Japan. The translated texts, appearing in English for the first time, are accompanied by essays introducing the authors and offering brief analyses. Bold Breaks will appeal to students and scholars of Japanese literature and culture, particularly those interested in gender issues and family social practices, and will enrich the growing conversation on marriage and divorce across cultures and eras. Come for the robot dinosaur, stay for the cutest bestest baby boy! In what was originally conceived as the finale of the Heisei era, big names Mechagodzilla, Rodan, and even a new Baby Godzilla arrive for this nature vs. technology story, where humans and the military are unambiguously the bad guys and the monsters are just seeking their adopted family. We talk about this era's odd use of Miki (and how this film makes an effort to fix it), eerie psychic songs, Mechagodzilla as corporate pride, all the smoke, sparks, and spotlights, and Derek's all-time favorite Godzilla character.Cover Art by: Radical GatorPart of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectiveCover Art Gallery | Patreon | DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: A Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series by David KalatGodzilla FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the King of the Monsters by Brian SolomonShelley Sweeny interview with Vantage PointWikizilla
