In the blistering heat of Western Australia, a small group of weary soldiers faced an unexpected enemy. Armed with 10,000 rounds each and every ounce of determination they could muster, they were tasked with taking down an invasion force of 20,000. But their adversaries weren't elite special forces—they were emus. Yes, emus. In this episode, we dive into the tale of the Great Emu War of 1932, an infamous campaign where Australian troops found themselves outwitted and outmaneuvered by a flock of massive, flightless birds. The operation became a public embarrassment, exposing critical flaws in strategy, communication, and clarity. Using this surreal story as a springboard, we explore how lack of clear goals, vision, and alignment can doom even the most well-equipped efforts. Just like these soldiers found themselves lost and overwhelmed, many entrepreneurs struggle to set meaningful goals and find direction in their work. But it doesn't have to be that way. Tune in to learn how setting clear, purposeful goals can transform your business and life, saving you from your own version of the “Great Emu War.” And don't miss the chance to read more on this at TomFoxley.me/blog, where you'll find practical tips to align your goals, avoid wasted effort, and create the success you're looking for. ---- Blog link: https://www.tomfoxley.me/post/nested-goals

A new film, The Great Emu War, is about to enter production starring comedy legends John Cleese and Rob Schneider. The Great Emu War was an Australian military operation undertaken in in 1932 to address public concern over the number of emus said to be destroying crops in the Wheatbelt of Western Australia. The war resulted in armed Australian Artillery soldiers being deployed, who while killing many birds, failed to eradicate enough to stop the crop destruction. Luke Grant chats with one of the writers of the film and one of Australia's most successful comedy exports, Monty Franklin, to find out what inspired to explore this unique era of Australian history. They also discuss his upcoming standup comedy tour. You can get your tickets here: https://www.montyfranklin.com/gigs-1See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Picture it! 1932. Western Australia. Emus were taking over. They were gobbling up and trampling farmers' wheat, and in turn, destroying their livelihoods. Something had to be done. So, the Australian government came up with a *novel* solution. They'd arm three members of the Royal Australian Artillery with machine guns. They figured those tall, flightless birds would be easy prey. They were wrong. Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! Grant takes the opportunity to share some "weird stories from Australia." He introduces us to an underground, underwater cave system in the middle of a cow field known as "The Shaft" in Australia. Next, he covers the disappearance of Harold Holt. The Australian Prime Minister who was abducted by aliens, eaten by a shark, or something way more normal and boring. Finally, we learn about what happens when you try to take on mother nature. Specifically, when you launch "The Great Emu War". This week's episode has a little fun down under!

It's Birthday Week on Episode 118 of the podcast! There's a cause for celebration as I make another trip around the sun. What better way to reminisce than by looking at how a birthday evolves and changes as we age? Oh, and also there will be a makeshift Top 5 as I share some of the best(worst) birthday memories! From a celebration today, to celebrations in the past, it'll be a fond, if somewhat hazy, look back at wild times on Cape Cod in the 1970s as we check out the story of the brief but spectacular existence of Yarmouth's Sandy Pond Club bar. This week's Road Trip features one of my absolute favorite places in all of New England, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It will be tough to narrow down all there is to see and do there into a manageable segment, but we will get it done.As a kid in the 1980s, no birthday celebration was complete without a trip to the drive-thru of your favorite fast-food establishment for dinner. This week's Top 5 is the other side of the coin as we look at the ambitious or downright odd menu items that became legendary fast food fails in the 80s.There will be a brand new This Week In History and Time Capsule featuring the strange but true story of Australia's Great Emu War.For more great content become a subscriber on Patreon or Buzzsprout!Helpful Links from this EpisodeThe Lady of the Dunes.comPurchase My New Book Cape Cod Beyond the Dunes! In My Footsteps: A Cape Cod Travel Guide(2nd Edition)Kiwi's Kustoms - EtsyDJ Williams MusicKeeKee's Cape Cod KitchenChristopher Setterlund.comCape Cod Living - Zazzle StoreGo Portsmouth NH.comGreat Emu War - Puppet HistoryKings of Cape Cod - The DocumentaryListen to Episode 117 here Support the show
Hello and welcome to Entangled! The podcast where we explore the science of consciousness, the true nature of reality, and what it means to be a spiritual being having a human experience. I'm your host Jordan Youkilis, and today I'm joined by my friend John Decker. Decker and I start the conversation discussing nature, New Zealand, rugby and lacrosse. We next discuss John's decision to attend Wabash and what it was like having an all-male college experience. From there, we discuss his parents' military careers and how Decker dealt with the loss of his father shortly after graduating college. From there, we consider the relationship of dreams and reality and consider what happens after death and before life. We next discuss Eastern mysticism and medicine, why we've collectively become disillusioned with Western medicine, and where we could be heading with the future of human health. We then shift gears to discuss American politics, our current state of hyper-divisiveness, and whether the two-party state is truly a failed Uniparty. We next consider the exit strategy for the Ukraine conflict, Jeffrey Epstein's crime syndicate, and the role blackmail plays in politics today. From there, we discuss the degradation of democratic rights in light of censorship and the events of January 6th, and we speculate on the 2024 election and the candidacy of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. We then discuss our views on vaccine safety and how that has developed since before the pandemic. We consider the loss of public trust in mainstream media and the rise of independent journalism. We examine the potential for future overreach by the government, including the WHO's pandemic treaty amendment, the possibility of World War III, and the threat of a Deep State false flag masquerading as a hostile ET attack. In this light, we consider the future of humanity and how we can avoid dystopia. We end the conversation on a number of heavier topics including the true depth of corruption and criminality of politicians like Hillary Clinton and Anthony Weiner, and the disturbing but true phenomenon of adrenochrome harvesting. We consider the story of MK-Ultra survivor Cathy O'Brien of the dark history of that CIA program. We discuss the porn industry and its ties to financing the Deep State. Finally, we discuss the Great Emu War of Australian, hippo meat, meat alternatives, and fermented shark. We end the conversation discussing our diets and fitness routines. This Outro asks Who is Hillary Rodham Clinton? Outros available for this and all episodes at entangledpodcast.substack.com. In this Quick Tok episode, Jack discusses three unbelievable true stories from around the world. The Great Emu War (1932):In Australia, there was an actual military operation known as the "Great Emu War." In 1932, a large number of emus (flightless birds) were damaging farmlands, and the government decided to send soldiers armed with machine guns to try to control the emu population. However, the emus proved to be surprisingly agile and difficult targets, and the soldiers were unsuccessful in their attempts to reduce the emu population. The event has become a humorous and unusual episode in Australian history. The Dyatlov Pass Incident (1959):A group of experienced hikers in the Ural Mountains of Russia mysteriously died under bizarre circumstances. The hikers' tent was found torn from the inside, and their bodies were discovered scattered in the snow, some without proper clothing. Theories about what happened range from avalanches to military involvement to supernatural explanations. The true cause of their deaths remains a subject of speculation and intrigue. The Tunguska Event (1908):An explosion occurred over the Siberian taiga in Russia, flattening around 2,000 square kilometers of forest. The explosion was estimated to be about 1,000 times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The exact cause of the explosion is still debated, but it's widely believed to have been the result of the airburst of a small comet or asteroid, causing a massive explosion upon entering Earth's atmosphere.Email: atozenglishpodcast@gmail.comPodcast Website: https://atozenglishpodcast.com/a-to-z-quick-tok-19-unbelievable-true-stories-from-around-the-world/Social Media:Threadshttps://threads.com/invitation/34520051596/RLLHXJPPFMTFXUHE5NSUT6OLMUSSLEJBUI227Z6DXCO2XVBOWQCK7N4UA to Z Facebook Page:https://www.facebook.com/theatozenglishpodcastTik Tok:@atozenglish1Instagram:@atozenglish22Twitter:@atozenglish22Check out the Free Online English Lessons YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCds7JR-5dbarBfas4Ve4h8ADonate to the show: https://app.redcircle.com/shows/9472af5c-8580-45e1-b0dd-ff211db08a90/donationsRobin and Jack started a new You Tube channel called English Word Master. In this episode of The A to Z English Podcast, Jack reads three strange but true news stories."Cow-napping Mystery in France" (July 2022)In a bizarre incident in rural France, an entire herd of cows disappeared overnight from a farmer's field. The farmer woke up to find all 100 of his cows missing, leaving no traces of their whereabouts. Authorities investigated the unusual cow-napping case, but the cows remained missing for several weeks. Then, a month later, the cows were discovered grazing on the rooftop of an abandoned building in a nearby town. It remains a mystery how the cows managed to reach such an unlikely location and why they were taken in the first place."The Great Emu War of Australia" (November 1932)In a curious chapter of Australian history, farmers faced an unexpected problem when thousands of emus invaded their wheat fields during a drought. Frustrated by the damage caused to their crops, the farmers sought military assistance. The Australian government deployed soldiers armed with machine guns to combat the emu infestation, leading to what became known as "The Great Emu War." However, the emus proved to be agile and elusive opponents, and the soldiers struggled to effectively control their population. Eventually, the government abandoned the war effort, leaving the emus victorious."Man Sues Himself for $5 Million" (June 2009)In a bizarre legal case in the United States, a man filed a lawsuit against himself for a staggering $5 million. The reason behind the self-suing was that he believed he was partly responsible for his own actions that led to a car accident. He argued that he was negligent and wanted to hold himself financially accountable for the damages he caused. The court initially allowed the case to proceed, but later it was dismissed due to its absurd nature and the lack of legal standing.Email: atozenglishpodcast@gmail.comPodcast Website:https://atozenglishpodcast.com/a-to-z-strange-but-true-news-episode-01/Social Media:Threadshttps://threads.com/invitation/34520051596/RLLHXJPPFMTFXUHE5NSUT6OLMUSSLEJBUI227Z6DXCO2XVBOWQCK7N4UA to Z Facebook Page:https://www.facebook.com/theatozenglishpodcastTik Tok:@atozenglish1Instagram:@atozenglish22Twitter:@atozenglish22Check out the Free Online English Lessons YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCds7JR-5dbarBfas4Ve4h8ADonate to the show: https://app.redcircle.com/shows/9472af5c-8580-45e1-b0dd-ff211db08a90/donationsRobin and Jack started a new You Tube channel called English Word Master. David and Rachel discuss that time in Australia when three soldiers tried to take out 20,000 emus with machine guns. Script by listener Stephen.
"If we had a military division of these birds it would face any army in the world!" In this episode we explore one of the wackiest chapters in military history. In 1932, Australia declared war on its native bird, the emu. Veteran soldiers armed with machine guns and high hopes took to the battlefield, ready to take down these seemingly harmless birds. What followed was a series of strange battles that left the Australian army (and the public) scratching their heads in disbelief. Emus, with their lightning-fast speed and surprising cunning, proved to be more than a match for them. Major Meredith And His Merry Men were left dodging beaks and feathers, as the emus outmaneuvered them at every turn. Join us as we delve into the absurdity of the Great Emu War, where machine guns was no match for a horde of feathery foes. Help support the show on Patreon! Sources and Attributions on our website.
