Here is my homily from December 8, 2024, the 3rd Sunday of Advent, Year C. See the readings at usccb.org.
The engaging story of Intellivision, an overlooked videogame system from the late 1970s and early 1980s whose fate was shaped by Mattel, Atari, and countless others who invented the gaming industry. Astrosmash, Snafu, Star Strike, Utopia—do these names sound familiar to you? No? Maybe? They were all videogames created for the Intellivision videogame system, sold by Mattel Electronics between 1979 and 1984. This system was Atari's main rival during a key period when videogames were moving from the arcades into the home. In Intellivision: How a Videogame System Battled Atari and Almost Bankrupted Barbie® (MIT Press, 2024), Tom Boellstorff and Braxton Soderman tell the fascinating inside story of this overlooked gaming system. Along the way, they also analyze Intellivision's chips and code, games, marketing and business strategies, organizational and social history, and the cultural and economic context of the early US games industry from the mid-1970s to the great videogame industry crash of 1983. While many remember Atari, Intellivision has largely been forgotten. As such, Intellivision fills a crucial gap in videogame scholarship, telling the story of a console that sold millions and competed aggressively against Atari. Drawing on a wealth of data from both institutional and personal archives and over 150 interviews with programmers, engineers, executives, marketers, and designers, Boellstorff and Soderman examine the relationship between videogames and toys—an under-analyzed aspect of videogame history—and discuss the impact of home computing on the rise of videogames, the gendered implications of play and videogame design at Mattel, and the blurring of work and play in the early games industry. Rudolf Thomas Inderst (*1978) enjoys video games since 1985. He received a master's degree in political science, American cultural studies as well as contemporary and recent history from Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich and holds two PhDs in game studies (LMU & University of Passau). Currently, he's teaching as a professor for game design at the IU International University for Applied Science, has submitted his third dissertation at the University of Vechta, holds the position as lead editor at the online journal Titel kulturmagazin for the game section, hosts the German local radio show Replay Value and is editor of the weekly game research newsletter DiGRA D-A-CH Game Studies Watchlist. The second DLC for Atari 50 is out, about the first console war, and it has some interesting games - as long as you have a second player on the couch with you. Tetris Forever is also out now, and I give some early impressions of the games included and the start of the documentary portion. SEGA is delisting many classic games on all platforms, probably to sell them back to you at a higher price. Epic Games has said they are supporting the Internet Archive's hosting of Unreal and Unreal Tournament. GOG announced a preservation program that has them taking on tech support and updates for older games. Then we talk to Rob about game archival and when holiday lights should come up.
I don't know about you, but in my Utopia there aren't pirates and rebels and hurricanes (oh my!), but Don Daglow disagrees and has added them in his version for the Intellivision! Luckily for him he happened to pretty much invent the city-builder genre at the same time, so I guess we can give him a pass...We also review Mighty Monkey by Universal, Anteater by Tago/Stern, and Shamus by Synapse Software in today's episode!Website -https://historyofvideogamespodcast.comTwitter - https://twitter.com/HistoryofVideo1Email - historyvgpodcast@gmail.comHosts - Ben & WesMusic - Arranged and recorded by Ben
I did my first speedrun commentary for Doronko Wanko at Multithon Rivals 2024! The Atari 50 DLC The Wider World of Atari is out, and has 19 new games and another chapter of video interviews and historical memorabilia. There's a new California law stating that digital storefronts must disclose that you do not own what you purchase, you are merely licensing things, and that the licenses can be revoked. An Activist Investor wants Ubisoft to sell to a private equity firm, and has the support of 10% of Ubisoft's shareholders. Then we talk about Astro Bot, the Metaphor: ReFantazio demo, and the Atari 50 DLC with Rob.
The Intellivisionaries are back with two... yes TWO game reviews! We dig deep into Death Race and GORF, two arcade ports for our beloved console. There is the normal shenanigans as well as news of the community and an interview with author Jamie Lendino. 00:00:00 Welcome / "Intellivisionaries Theme (2023 remix)" by Paul 'Nurmix' Nurminen 01:07:10 News 02:37:16 Interview: Jamie Lendino 04:00:54 Deep Dive Game Review: Death Race 04:33:28 Deep Dive Game Review: GORF 05:39:35 Wrap Up / "Treasured (2023 remix)" by Paul 'Nurmix' Nurminen 05:41:42 Outtakes / "Modern Digital Corporate Tech" by TazDev_music, pixabay
Apologies, we've been having issues with our feed, so this is why this is just now being posted. * This was originally recorded on 05/29/2024 *Hopefully, everyone had a great Memorial Day Weekend. This wasn't the biggest news week but at least there are a few things to talk about including Microsoft finally confirming that Call of Duty Black Ops 6 will be coming to Xbox Game Pass. Could this be the spark plug that helps liven up the service? Or is this a huge risk at possibly diminishing the cash cow in the first year of owning it? There are also rumors that a full PS5 Astrobot game will be announced soon and that it is not linked to the PSVR 2 like the first game was to the PlayStation VR. Does this excite the duo at the prospect of getting a longer Astrobot game? Also, some interesting announcements from Sony on their view on the future of gaming including a weird controller. Plus, Nintendo acquires a studio, IGN acquires more gaming websites, Atari acquires Intellivision, Shift Up wants to do more with Stellar Blade and more on this edition of the show. You can also watch this episode in video form on the W2M Network Youtube Channel, please give us a like, comment on the episode, and give the channel a subscribe and follow as well: https://youtube.com/live/6xSxw3ozl4E- If you prefer podcasts: Listen and give us a review on these platforms... -Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/ag/podcast/video-games-2-the-max/id886092740Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2wjd0u3xO7TdAm4gKRM44LAmazon: https://www.audible.com/pd/Video-Games-2-the-MAX-Podcast/B08JJPTZTWPodchaser: https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/video-games-2-the-max-181386Podcast Addict: https://podcastaddict.com/?podId=2465904IHeart Radio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/53-video-games-2-the-m-28438312/- Follow on X (Twitter): -Sean on Twitter (X): https://twitter.com/W2MSeanMarc on Twitter (X): https://twitter.com/HumanityPlagueW2M Network on Twitter (X): https://twitter.com/w2mnetwork- Other Social Media -Follow us on Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@w2mnetwork2Join us on Discord: https://discord.gg/aydMgvUN9dFollow us on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/w2mnetworkFollow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/w2mnetwork/Follow Us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/W2MNetwork

We catch up on two weeks worth of news, including the big news we missed last week on Atari buying Intellivision. Okay it's a little more nuianced than that broad stroke, but we break down what it means for the future of Intellivison, and if perhaps there is a lot of good news that could come from this despite the troubled recent history of the Intellivision Amico. In more recent gaming news, Sony put out a State of Play update showing the latest and greatest games coming to the PS5 later this year. Did anything else catch our eye or was it all about Astro Bot? We talk about all this and much more on another week of the longest running video game podcast, Orange Lounge Radio! This week on It Was a Thing on TV we conclude Pilot Month 2024 by meeting your Dad in a Twist of a situation. First, hot off the heels of How I Met Your Mother's finale—and 8 years before appearing on Hulu—CBS & Fox began work on the next chapter, involving original creators Carter Bays & Craig Thomas, a future Oscar-nominated writer, a Golden Globe-nominated actress, a night of hard partying, a blue typewriter, and a girl named Cricket. Then, we close the door on yet another pilot month with this amalgamation of pieces and parts from various game shows from the Bob Stewart family, mixed with the theme from a past and future Stewart show, and add a shuffleboard table for good measure. The end result was Twisters, a truly unique concoction that didn't make NBC's schedule in late 1982/early 1983.
