Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris try their best to bring you this month's SAG Standouts. The challenge? Doing it for the Intellivision, a console neither one of them has a ton of experience with (even though Kris inexplicably owns 5 of the darn things). Which games will make their lists? Then, in Week Old News, Hyperkin gets ever closer to releasing their take on the Nomad, Goldfish crackers get into the world of gaming for some reason, Sony hosts a killer State of Play with some fantastic surprises , and more! Finally, in the Checkpoint, Kris tries the new Jaws NES game, Dan does a bunch of stuff I've forgotten about because I accidentally forgot to write this part last week when we recorded and I can't be arsed to go back and listen again, and presumably there was talk of sandwiches. In 1979, Mattel entered the console wars with the Intellivision, a machine that promised to outthink Atari with its 'intelligent television' design. This week, we explore how a toy company known for Barbie and Hot Wheels transformed into a technological powerhouse, creating one of the first true competitors to Atari's 2600. We discuss the innovations that made the Intellivision stand out, its 16-bit processor, unique keypad controllers, and focus on realism, and the missteps that led to its fall amid the 1983 crash. Our conversation dives into its visionary add-ons, the Blue Sky Rangers, and the legacy that still shapes console design today. Join us as we plug in and power on the story of Mattel's Intellivision on today's trip down Memory Card Lane.Read transcript

I spend a lot of time in this episode telling you about Blippo+, the FMV art project originally on the Playdate console but now on Steam and Switch. It's not for everybody, but it might be for you... But first, we talk a little bit about my time with a (company owned) Meta Quest 3 VR headset, and why I'm still being a sucker and buying the Nintendo Switch Online's Virtual Boy plastic case. Atari has announced an Intellivision console that will actually ship - the Intellivision Spirit - with 45 games. No cartridge port, though. Then we talk to Rob about TRON: Ares (we haven't seen it yet) and the Intellivision Spirit.
This week in retro we discuss the return of a console we thought was dead an buried, the Intellivision. With two arcade focussed stories we feel old as Space Harrier turns 40 and we remember the fantastic ways that the arcade would try to immerse us in a gaming experience, all thanks to a fantastic video about the Sega R360. Send us a textRemember when video games were simple pixelated adventures where building digital burgers or catching frogs occupied us for hours? The Noras take us on a delightful journey through gaming history, from the early days of Intellivision (with a surprise call from Nora's dad!) to the psychologically engineered experiences of modern games like Fortnite.Nostalgia flows as they reminisce about controllers with phone-like keypads, the satisfying "boing" of Pong, the excitement of Duck Hunt with its light gun, and how California Games let you skateboard and play hacky sack without leaving your living room. They share personal memories of playing at friends' houses, visits to arcades while waiting for tables at restaurants with questionable names like "Fat Fanny's," and how simple games created genuine social experiences. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when they explore why modern games are so addictive. They break down the psychological hooks built into games like Fortnite—FOMO through limited events, social pressure, the "near miss" effect that keeps players saying "just one more round," and variable reward systems that trigger dopamine releases similar to gambling. This evolution from innocent entertainment to engineered engagement offers a thought-provoking look at how far gaming has come.Between gaming discussions, they touch on alarming reading statistics (only 16% of people read for fun?!), proper sheet-washing schedules (are you doing it right?), and the challenges of teenage milestone celebrations. Their warm, relatable banter creates a conversation that feels like catching up with friends who just happen to be discussing the cultural forces that shaped our entertainment landscape.Have you dusted off your old gaming systems lately? Maybe it's time to introduce a new generation to the simple joys of Burger Time or challenge them to a round of Mario Kart!Mike Haggerty Buick GMCRight on the corner, right on the price! The engaging story of Intellivision, an overlooked videogame system from the late 1970s and early 1980s whose fate was shaped by Mattel, Atari, and countless others who invented the gaming industry. Astrosmash, Snafu, Star Strike, Utopia—do these names sound familiar to you? No? Maybe? They were all videogames created for the Intellivision videogame system, sold by Mattel Electronics between 1979 and 1984. This system was Atari's main rival during a key period when videogames were moving from the arcades into the home. In Intellivision: How a Videogame System Battled Atari and Almost Bankrupted Barbie® (MIT Press, 2024), Tom Boellstorff and Braxton Soderman tell the fascinating inside story of this overlooked gaming system. Along the way, they also analyze Intellivision's chips and code, games, marketing and business strategies, organizational and social history, and the cultural and economic context of the early US games industry from the mid-1970s to the great videogame industry crash of 1983. While many remember Atari, Intellivision has largely been forgotten. As such, Intellivision fills a crucial gap in videogame scholarship, telling the story of a console that sold millions and competed aggressively against Atari. Drawing on a wealth of data from both institutional and personal archives and over 150 interviews with programmers, engineers, executives, marketers, and designers, Boellstorff and Soderman examine the relationship between videogames and toys—an under-analyzed aspect of videogame history—and discuss the impact of home computing on the rise of videogames, the gendered implications of play and videogame design at Mattel, and the blurring of work and play in the early games industry. Rudolf Thomas Inderst (*1978) enjoys video games since 1985. He received a master's degree in political science, American cultural studies as well as contemporary and recent history from Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich and holds two PhDs in game studies (LMU & University of Passau). Currently, he's teaching as a professor for game design at the IU International University for Applied Science, has submitted his third dissertation at the University of Vechta, holds the position as lead editor at the online journal Titel kulturmagazin for the game section, hosts the German local radio show Replay Value and is editor of the weekly game research newsletter DiGRA D-A-CH Game Studies Watchlist. The second DLC for Atari 50 is out, about the first console war, and it has some interesting games - as long as you have a second player on the couch with you. Tetris Forever is also out now, and I give some early impressions of the games included and the start of the documentary portion. SEGA is delisting many classic games on all platforms, probably to sell them back to you at a higher price. Epic Games has said they are supporting the Internet Archive's hosting of Unreal and Unreal Tournament. GOG announced a preservation program that has them taking on tech support and updates for older games. Then we talk to Rob about game archival and when holiday lights should come up.
I don't know about you, but in my Utopia there aren't pirates and rebels and hurricanes (oh my!), but Don Daglow disagrees and has added them in his version for the Intellivision! Luckily for him he happened to pretty much invent the city-builder genre at the same time, so I guess we can give him a pass...We also review Mighty Monkey by Universal, Anteater by Tago/Stern, and Shamus by Synapse Software in today's episode!Website -https://historyofvideogamespodcast.comTwitter - https://twitter.com/HistoryofVideo1Email - historyvgpodcast@gmail.comHosts - Ben & WesMusic - Arranged and recorded by Ben
