Email can often be a monster that needs to be tamed, but it doesn't have to be! Jesse and I share an interesting conversation in this episode about how to tame it – interesting in that we have very different methods for doing it. With more than fifteen years of having my own business, I have learned some strategies that I think might be helpful for you! While Jesse tends to procrastinate when it comes to managing his email inbox, my strategy is pretty different because I cannot stand having a bunch of emails (either read or unread) in my inbox, and the little red icons on your phone that tell you how many emails that you need to tend to drive me crazy! If you're anything like me, then I am hoping that my four strategies will be helpful to you! (1) Unsubscribe mercilessly! (2) Use the delete button and the archive button to avoid clutter! (3) Fanatically set up filters! (4) Don't procrastinate; deal with emails as soon as possible! If you let your emails build up on the daily, then your inbox is going to quickly become a monster that will be very difficult to tame! Listen in to this episode to hear about how you can help tame that monster and even prevent it from ever getting that wild again! Email, after all, is supposed to be a productive tool, not a stressful monster! In This Episode: [0:32] – Today's topic is all about email and how to stay on top of it. [1:35] – I have probably processed millions of emails over the last fifteen or so years. [2:10] – Our daughter just started a new job! [4:57] – I share an email that I received about my book Love-Centered Parenting. [7:45] – Lean in and love your kids, and be grateful when they want to include you! [9:03] – I just recently finished reading The Woman with the Blue Star by Pam Jenoff. [11:59] – Jesse recently finished reading Andrew Huff's novel Right Cross. [14:53] – Find out what has been saving my life recently. [17:44] – Jesse talks about his recent trip. [19:35] – Our daughter recently went on a retreat for school which was coincidentally the same camp where Jesse stayed. [23:11] – Jesse's strategy of taking care of emails is deleting emails after their time sensitivity has expired. [25:30] – Unsubscribe from unhelpful email lists! [26:53] – Make use of the delete button and the archive button! [29:42] – Set up filters in your inbox! [32:56] – Deal with emails immediately! [35:57] – Set aside designated time to spend on processing emails. [36:45] – Use Unroll.Me and increments of fifteen minutes to process through especially saturated inboxes. [39:35] – Setting up these systems makes such a huge difference! He didn't grow up believing in God and never expected to become a pastor. A graduate of Dartmouth College, his curiosity about faith began there. In an Intro to World Religions course, he began to sense that there was far more to this life than what meets the eye. After surviving several close calls with death, he is truly grateful for every new day and opportunities to encourage people in their journey. Jesse has served as a college pastor on a major campus (University of Iowa) and in San Diego (North Coast Church). He’s been a pastor in the Bay Area, and now in Seattle Graceinauburn.com He also leads with a citywide gospel movement called Saturate the Sound. It is a collective of 100 churches and ministries committed to seeing a gospel saturation movement happen in the Pacific Northwest. Since the age of three, Jesse's clear desire was to be a professional athlete. He played three sports in high school and was a soccer goalkeeper for two Ivy League championship teams in college. While Jesse was playing for a soccer team in Zimbabwe and tutoring students, he was taking a prescribed drug called Larium to protect against malaria. The dangerous and controversial drug built up toxic levels in his system after several months, and the results were tragic. Fighting for his life the next year, Jesse's career was suddenly taken away because of his health battle. It was a ten year recovery and Jesse learned his deepest lessons in life during this time. Jesse has a popular free marriage course and a new YouTube channel https://youtube.com/c/JesseBradleyChannel Jesse is a global speaker bringing a message of leadership and healing.
This past week has been… insane. Between Jesse going out of town with Kathrynn and Kaitlynn, my book launch, welcoming a new foster sweetheart into our family, and then everyone getting the stomach bug, we’ve had quite the ride. This past week was the girls’ Week Without Walls. Last year Kathrynn went to Surinam but this year the school decided to stay much more local. Jesse ended up going with a bunch of seniors to Universal and Disney and they really did have a blast, but it was a very long week. While Jesse and the girls were gone, I got a call from our DCS worker about a possible placement and in less than 24hrs we took in a precious baby boy with a bunch of medical issues. He’s got a cleft palate, Down Syndrome, a feeding tube, and so much more but he really is the sweetest thing. Thank goodness my mom was already in town to help me with Kierstyn because between taking in this sweet new baby and all the press interviews I had for the book, it would have been bad. As it was, I spent the entire week of my book launch navigating new medical hurdles, making phone calls, and figuring out timing… all to end the week with a terrible stomach bug. Just as Jesse and the girls came home, Kierstyn got sick and we all went down from there. Even though this past week was certainly not perfect, I was reminded in so many ways about how God prepares us for each season. There were so many little moments that made it clear that He had our backs and was watching over us and the comfort I found in that was immense. Listen in to hear all the details. In This Episode: [00:33] The last week has been absolutely crazy! [02:16] We went to Disney, we’ve extended our family, I launched a book, and we all got sick. [03:29] Jesse shares more about this year’s Week Without Walls. [05:23] He was chaperoning mostly seniors and they went to different Disney parks each day. [07:07] What’s the one big thing that stands out for him? [09:27] While Jesse was on the trip, I was at home with my mom and doing press interviews. [10:45] Which is when we got a call from our DCS worker about a possible placement with a new baby. [14:00] Jesse was a very strong yes for being able to take this placement, so we now have a new baby in the house. [17:05] After taking him in at midnight, the next day I had multiple in-studio press appointments, but God saw us through. [19:29] We felt much more prepared for this case because of our experience with Champ. [20:28] Another example of how God prepared our hearts for this case. [23:08] ...and then Kierstyn started throwing up and a stomach bug has now circulated the house. [24:36] Which means the book launch was nothing like I thought it would be but it was still perfect. I had the pleasure of interviewing Jesse Byock, professor of Old Norse and Medieval Scandinavian Studies at UCLA and Háskóli Íslands for the All Things Iceland Podcast. We sat down in his lovely apartment in Reykjavík to chat about his book “Viking Language 1: Learn Old Norse, Runes, and Icelandic Sagas”. I met Jesse at the 2017 Polyglot Conference in Reykjavík, Iceland after seeing the captivating cover of his book (below) that was laying on the table. I ended up having a chat with Jesse about living in Iceland, the Icelandic language and the Viking Language book series. As an archaeologist and an expat that has lived in Iceland for decades, Jesse has some fascinating stories to share. You will hear some of them in this interview. Viking Language 1 - A Brief Overview Can you guess what the creature is on the front cover of his book? Jesse reveals the answer at 24:05 in the podcast. Viking Language 1 is a grammar book for beginners that want an introduction to Old Norse, but it goes beyond the normal humdrum grammar book. Over the course of 20 years, Jesse developed this book based on the feedback he received from his students while teaching Old Norse. Instead of just cramming the book with rote grammar and vocabulary exercises, he decided to weave in tidbits of history, culture and stories in between the exercises. He also included maps that display where Vikings traveled in Europe and North America. This refreshing approach made doing the exercises fun. History and culture enthusiasts will be delighted with the plethora of information he provides. While Jesse uses this book to teach Old Norse in the classroom, he stated in the interview that he structured the book so people could use it for independent learning. As a do-it-yourself kind of person, I appreciate the effort he made to create a book that is also useful for people who are not taking a class. You can find Viking Language 1 & 2 on Amazon Learn More About Jesse Byock & His Other Books Jesse’s Viking Language website Jesse has authored many books and they are available on Amazon. Þakka þér kærlega fyrir að lesa (og að hlusta). Sjáumst fljótlega. Thank you kindly for reading (and listening to the podcast). See you soon!

College graduates Harry Burns and Sally Albright share a contentious car ride from Chicago to New York, during which they argue about whether men and women can ever truly be strictly platonic friends. Ten years later, Harry and Sally meet again at a bookstore and attempt to stay friends without wanting to sleep together. While Jesse knows a great deal about this Rob Reiner/Nora Ephron/Harry Connick Jr. mash-up, Ryan has brought this film to his attention because it addresses an issue that most face, can men and women truly be, “just friends”?
