This Sunday, Harry Burns from ‘When Harry Met Sally' gives us a way in to talking about why Jesus got baptised and what baptism means for us: **SPOILER !!** At the end of the movie Harry races through the streets of New York to catch up with Sally, the woman who's been his best friend for years and who he finally realises he loves. He bursts into the New Year's party she's attending and confronts her on the dance floor with a declaration of his love that begins a whole new phase in their life together. And – as he tells Sally - it's not because he's sad, and it's not because he's lonely and it's not because it's New Year's Eve. It's because “when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible!” For two millennia, baptism has been that beginning for Christians. Not just a Kodak moment in the church, but the beginning of a Way to live from the cradle to the grave. A way that leads to life, as we become who we are in Jesus through cultivating the good and dying to the bad in our lives. If you're baptised, what does your baptism mean to you? How are you living it out? https://youtu.be/qBzfe_hQspo

If you think of health in the UK as a fabric, it is the most threadbare in Glasgow. Here, life expectancy is lowest, and one in four men will die before their sixty-fifth birthday. But even after adjusting for poverty and deprivation, next to comparable deindustrialised cities such as Liverpool and Manchester, Glaswegians have a 30% risk of dying prematurely. That's from cancer heart disease stroke as well as deaths of despair: suicide, drugs alcohol. It isn't getting any better, and that's not even taking into account the pandemic. In this episode, we explore: What is fraying health to this degree in Glasgow? What is being done to help? And what can we all learn from Glasgow's longstanding efforts to try to mend the health fabric, as we all attempt to build back better after the pandemic? Our Chief Executive Dr Jennifer Dixon discusses this with two expert guests who have for many years been central to this story: Dr David Walsh is Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow, and a senior academic at the Glasgow Centre for Population Health. Over the years David has carried out a large body of work aimed at understanding Scotland's (and Glasgow's) high levels of ‘excess' mortality, deindustrialisation and health across European regions, and the impact of government ‘austerity' measures on mortality.  Sir Harry Burns is the Professor of Global Public Health, University of Strathclyde. Harry was the Chief Medical Officer for Scotland for almost ten years from September 2005 to April 2014, and is well known for his tireless work on health inequalities. He is a member of the Council of Economic Advisers in Scotland. Recommended reading: Walsh D, Bendel N, Jones R, Hanlon P. Investigating a 'Glasgow effect'. Janice is the senior meteorologist at FOX News, and a recent NYT bestselling author for her book Mostly Sunny. She's an MS advocate, devoted wife and mother, and lover of romcoms. Janice went OLD SCHOOL and chose one of the most iconic romcoms of all time, When Harry Met Sally! And I totally understand why. It’s a classic! Just listen to this synopsis: In 1977, college graduates Harry Burns and Sally Albright share a contentious car ride from Chicago to New York, during which they argue about whether men and women can ever truly be strictly platonic friends. Ten years later, Harry and Sally meet again at a bookstore, and in the company of their respective best friends, Jess and Marie (played by the amazing Carrie Fisher), they attempt to stay friends without sex becoming an issue between them. When Harry Met Sally taught us that’s it’s okay to order things “on the side” and that keeping a can of hair spray in your glove compartment is just smart. We also learned that no matter how cool you think it is, that Roy Rogers wagon wheel coffee table is ugly. Accept that now and you will thank me later.  EPISODE NOTES Here's a review I did for Janice's book Mostly Sunny! Here’s the trailer for When Harry Met Sally. Happy New Year! We'll be back next week with new episodes. It's 2019 now. The future. Makes the 2015 from "Back to the Future Part II" seem like a million years ago. But now we're in the year of "Blade Runner." And they really nailed that. No better way to describe Los Angeles 2019 than a bunch of sushi-eating robots. Jim's still on his paternity leave of sorts as we've been taking some time off for the holidays, but in the meantime, enjoy our repost of one of our favorite episodes, "When Harry Met Sally..." ******* ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES: We will not have what she's having! The 1989 Rob Reiner-directed and Nora Ephron-written vehicle "When Harry Met Sally..." ushered in Meg Ryan as a leading lady and has been a pox on all of our houses ever since. We know that this movie is fiction because it pretends 41-year-old Billy Crystal is a twenty-something Lothario who has slept with so many women that he may need to leave New York City. Billy Crystal plays Harry Burns, a supposed political consultant, and Meg Ryan plays Sally Albright, a supposed hard-hitting journalist, even though we never see either of them do a lick of work. But they must be successful because they are both insanely rich with their gigantic Manhattan high-rise apartments. The story follows these two unlikable characters over 12 years, even though they only really know each other for the last year and a half. So, why 12 years? The cast also features the late Carrie Fisher and the late Bruno Kirby as Harry and Sally's friends who are equally despicable New Yorkers. This movie has it all—fake female orgasms, old-people-in-love testimonials, wagon wheel coffee tables, power walking and even former President Gerald Ford's son. Harry Burns was a surgeon, who gave up his career in that discipline to become a public health doctor. Eventually that lead to him being the last Chief Medical Officer of Scotland, and now he's professor of global public health at the University of Strathclyde. Scotland has always had a separate NHS, but since devolution, the parliament there has had much more autonomy in running the country - and Harry has seemed to manage to convince them that improving health means improving the social determinants of health. In this conversation we talk about that link, how his philosophy has affected policy up there, some of the experiments which are going on in the country, and what he thinks is the most exciting change.
