Andrew Child, who also writes under the name Andrew Grant, is now carrying on the legacy of Jack Reacher for his older brother. He came to Portland for the 2024 Portland Book Festival to talk about the 29th book in the series, “In Too Deep.”

From Here to the Great Unknown by Lisa Marie Presley and Riley Keough Born to an American myth and raised in the wilds of Graceland, Lisa Marie Presley tells her whole story for the first time in this raw, riveting, one-of-a-kind memoir faithfully completed by her daughter, Riley Keough. In 2022, Lisa Marie Presley asked her daughter to help finally finish her long-gestating memoir. A month later, Lisa Marie was dead, and the world would never know her story in her own words, never know the passionate, joyful, caring, and complicated woman that Riley loved and grieved. Riley got the tapes that her mother had recorded for the book, laid in her bed, and listened as Lisa Marie told story after story about smashing golf carts together in the yards of Graceland, about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about being upstairs, just the two of them. About getting dragged screaming out of the bathroom as she ran towards his body on the floor. About living in Los Angeles with her mother, getting sent to school after school, always kicked out, always in trouble. About her singular, lifelong relationship with Danny Keough, about being married to Michael Jackson, what they shared in common. About motherhood. About deep addiction. About ever-present grief. Riley knew she had to fulfill her mother's wish to reveal these memories, incandescent and painful, to the world. To make her mother known. This extraordinary book is composed of both Lisa Marie's and Riley's voice, a mother and daughter communicating across the transom of death as they try to heal each other. Profoundly moving and deeply revealing, From Here to the Great Unknown is a book like no other-the last words of the only child of a true legend. In Too Deep by Lee Child and Andrew Child Reacher had no idea where he was. No idea how he had got there. But someone must have brought him. And shackled him. And whoever had done those things was going to rue the day. That was for damn sure. Jack Reacher wakes up, alone, in the dark, handcuffed to a makeshift bed. His right arm has suffered some major damage. His few possessions are gone. He has no memory of getting there. The last thing Reacher can recall is the car he hitched a ride in getting run off the road. The driver was killed. His captors assume Reacher was the driver's accomplice and patch up his wounds as they plan to make him talk. A plan that will backfire spectacularly . . . Watch this episode as a full video interview on our YouTube channel!Lee Child is the author of more than two dozen New York Times bestselling Jack Reacher thrillers, with most having reached the #1 position, and the #1 bestselling complete Jack Reacher story collection, No Middle Name. Foreign rights in the Reacher series have sold in one hundred territories. Andrew Child (as Andrew Grant) is the author of the critically-acclaimed novels Even, Die Twice, More Harm Than Good, RUN, False Positive, False Friend, False Witness, Invisible, and Too Close To Home. He began to take over the mantle of writing Jack Reacher from Lee starting with The Sentinel, and his most recent Reacher novel is In Too Deep.We loved having the opportunity to chat with Lee and Andrew, and hearing about how Jack Reacher was born out of necessity after Lee lost his job in TV. Both of them explain their writing processes, and Lee tells us how rather than a list of ideas about Reacher, he began with a list of the things he didn't want from the character. We also talked about them writing the last few Reacher novels together, and how Andrew feels about taking the series forward.Links:Follow Lee Child on Twitter/XFollow Andrew Child on Twitter/XVisit the Jack Reacher websiteSupport us on Patreon and get great benefits!: https://www.patreon.com/ukpageonePage One - The Writer's Podcast is brought to you by Write Gear, creators of Page One - the Writer's Notebook. In honor of LL Cool J's new album The FORCE, we profiled The GOAT's film and television career. Topics discussed:
Benjamin Knock is an Australian multi-disciplinary artist who's work is predominantly focused around geological structures, the mechanics of our planet and passage of time. Since our last chat, Benji has been hanging out, for extended periods of time, on the edge of active, erupting volcanoes. I've been completely glued to his instagram stories as he's been documenting bursts of exploding lava, deep earthly rumbles, huge black smoke clouds and barron alien landscapes. https://www.benjaminknock.com/ Instagram: @k_n_o_c_k @terra_therma
He may have stepped back from his iconic series, but that doesn't mean Lee Child has put his pen down. Since his announcement last year that he was passing the character of Jack Reacher over into his brother's hands, he's been credited in the latest novel ‘In Too Deep', which is being released in October. But before that Child has released another project of his own, an action-packed short story collection called ‘Safe Enough: And Other Stories'. He told Mike Hosking that they're stories he's written over the course of his career, and since stepping back from Reacher, someone suggested he make a collection. “They were kind of secret projects of mine that I would do anything I wanted,” Child said. “And I'm very interested to see what other people think of them.” The oldest story was written twenty years ago, back in 2004, with the others all falling somewhere in between then and the present. “I have no idea what people will think. I hope they like them, but we shall find out.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 2011, a team of Swedish ocean explorers searching for shipwrecks in the Baltic sea came across a very strange and unexplainable object. Their scanners picked up a large circular structure, seemingly non-natural, 60 meters in diameter and 90 meters deep with a long drag mark following it etched into the ocean floor. This discovery changed the course of their lives, sparking a relentless effort to examine and learn what this object might be, how it got there and how long its been there. The coverage of this discovery went world wide with the media dubbing it “The Baltic Sea Anonmaly” and even “The Baltic Sea UFO”. It is a really strange and exciting discovery which seems to puzzle all the scientific professionals who examine it. Is it a natural phenomena caused by volcanic activity? Or a meteor? Could it be man made? The foundations of some kind of building? Or could it actually be as strange as UFO crash site? One thing they do know is the more learn, the more questions that arise. The team who discovered it is called OceanX, lead by Peter Lindberg and Dennis Asberg. Today I am joining by Dennis, one of the original discoverers of this bizarre mysterious object lying at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Four hot DILFs. One string bikini. Candace is used to getting everything she wants. When her dad refuses to let her wear a new bikini to the guys' pool party, she sneaks one in with her towel. Why should her dad get to decide what's appropriate? She's old enough to make her own choices. But then her dad gets called into work at the last minute, and Candace is left alone with his four hot friends wearing a swimsuit that barely covers her assets. Now the sharks are circling. All that stands between her body and their hunger is a scrap of fabric. Her skimpy bikini never stood a chance. But what starts as a simple robbery, ends in a horrific double murder.Murder Mile is researched, written and performed by Michael of Murder Mile Walks with the main musical themes written and performed by Erik Stein and Jon Boux of Cult With No Name and additional music, as used under the Creative Commons License 4.0. This is Part One of Two of In Too Deep. Back in 1968, Flat 35 on the fifth floor was an elegant and stylish two-bedroomed apartment owned by newly-weds; 53-year-old stockbroker Michael O'Carroll and 25-year-old model Janet Williams.Being a secure home, these flats have buzzers, intercoms, cameras, porters and service bells to ensure the residents safety. But on 12th March 1968 - as many homes have - Flat 35 was burgled. It had been planned as a simple get in-grab it-and get out caper, so this should have been an easy job for the robbers. But being planned by a gang who were both inept and ill-equipped, their home invasion would turn from a hostage situation into a brutal double murder.Murder Mile is researched, written and performed by Michael of Murder Mile Walks with the main musical themes written and performed by Erik Stein and Jon Boux of Cult With No Name and additional music, as used under the Creative Commons License 4.0. Author and Middlebury College English and American Literatures professor Megan Mayhew Bergman pays a visit to YMAAA to talk about Fiona Apple's debut album, Tidal. She revisits the time in her life when she first heard the album, why it was important then and continues to be important to her now, and which songs are her favorites (and which ones she is liable to skip).Megan and Al got into a little bit of a discussion about Genesis as well, and Al stated that he thought Tony Banks wrote “In Too Deep.” Phil Collins is credited with the lyrics, so he was at least partly wrong about this.Al also alluded to a series of Genesis interviews conducted in 2014. You can find them on YouTube in four installments. The first one is here — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeGVDk0mSY8 — and links to the others are in the notes for that video. One last Genesis-related note: Megan mentioned a baby Jesus statue in Mexico that resembles Phil Collins.
