The whole crew from is all together in person for an expansive deep dive into the cultural touchstones that shaped a generation. In this episode, we move beyond surface-level takes to dissect the complex legacy of Eddie Murphy's iconic 1982–1992 film run, specifically examining Arsenio Hall's crucial role in sustaining Murphy's momentum during that era.   We also turn up the heat on our recurring music debates. We face the tough questions: Does Ludacris have a true "classic" album, and how do the legendary discographies of Toni Braxton and Donell Jones stack up against one another? We also pay respects to the 30-year legacy of UGK's Ridin Dirty, analyzing how Bun B and Pimp C fundamentally shifted the trajectory of Southern hip-hop. Beyond the music, we tackle the heavy hitters of pop culture—from the mysterious "Oscar Curse" that haunts award-winning actors to the ongoing discourse surrounding the need for a unified Juneteenth anthem. Plus, we discuss the A Different World reboot and the evolving struggle between maintaining celebrity privacy in the age of social media. 0:00 I Only Listen to 90s Music Intro 0:09 Cultural Significance and Costs of Prom Celebrations  3:44 Nostalgic Reflections on Music and Memories from the 2000s  7:12 Eddie Murphy's Career and Arsenio Hall's Role in Saving Coming to America 19:18 Rest in Peace to Peabo Bryson and his many slept on hits  25:14 Whtiney Houston and The Making of Heartbreak Hotel  29:08 TLC, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Nostalgia, and Impact of 90s Hip-Hop and R&B Soundtracks  33:47 Is Ludcaris really slept on as a rapper?  39:16 LA Reid says the best Laface album is Donell Jones. DL kicks off the Verse Chorus Verse Radiohead series with the first two albums — solo, no Evil, no Rachel, just a man and his favorite band.Pablo Honey (1992) gets a 7/10. It's a gateway drug, not a masterpiece — a Brit rock album from the early 90s that happens to contain one of the most important songs ever recorded. The story behind Creep: recorded in one take, initially hated by the band, ignored until Arsenio Hall found the tape in his car, made enormous by a Beavis and Butt-Head segment. Top songs: Creep, Rip Chord, You.The Bends (1995) gets a 9/10 and a full reassessment — DL argues this album is massively underrated and better than he'd ever given it credit for. Jonny Greenwood's octatonic guitar work on "Just" (inspired by an obscure French composer), the story of EMI threatening to drop them after Pablo Honey, Tom York's stage breakdown and the NME calling it a "temper tantrum," and why Fake Plastic Trees is great even if it's not a personal favorite. Top songs: Just, My Iron Lung, Bulletproof I Wish I Was.Part 1 of a 6-episode Radiohead dissection series. OK Computer with Rachel and Evil is next.

"Did I do that?" Yes, in fact, he did. After a successful career as a writer on hit sitcoms like "Mork and Mindy," "The Nanny," and "Married with Children," podcast guest Alan Eisenstock managed to step from television writing rooms and reinvent himself as one of the publishing industry's most sought-after collaborators.  His most recent books include New York Times best-selling memoir Life's Too Short, written with Darius Rucker; Hang Time: My Life in Basketball, with NBA legend Elgin Baylor; the crime novel Flipping Boxcars, with Cedric the Entertainer; and the just-published memoir Arsenio, with comedian and pioneering talk show host Arsenio Hall—an immediate New York Times best-seller. "It was great, it was lucrative," he writes of his television career, which included a memorable turn behind the scenes of the ABC sitcom "Family Ties," where he came up with one of the most famous catch-phrases in television history—delivered in almost every episode by the show's breakout character Urkel, played by Jaleel White. "But I longed to return to my first love, writing prose, seeing my words in print, full-time." From distraction tactics to real-life stories that'll make you clutch your phone a little tighter, the conversation is both eye-opening and oddly entertaining. As Sandy puts it, “It's such a gutsy crime—because if you get caught, someone's throwing down.” Then comes a fan-favorite Friday tradition: Good Juju ✨. Borrowed from a legendary visit years ago, this magical moment delivers positive vibes to listeners facing big events—from community gatherings to emotional milestones. One caller summed it up perfectly after receiving juju: “That's what I call party paranoia—just worried everyone's gonna show up.” The episode also dives into Austin weekend energy

Eddie Murphy plays Prince Akeem and, with the help of a whole lotta latex, several other supporting characters in the 1988 hit, "Coming to America." Back then, the movie charmed audiences and critics alike, and solidified Murphy as box office royalty. It also gave him an opportunity to be in a rom com. But now, decades later, is 80's Eddie still a King of Comedy? Should the barbershop scenes end up on the cutting room floor? And, are our two love interests following a rose-pedaled path to heartbreak? The Old Roommates head to Queens and give it all a revisit through their middle-aged lens. Smear on some Soul Glo and join them. Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com.
