“This field recording was made at 7:00am on a peaceful August morning on Bois Blanc Island, Michigan, in Lake Huron. Taken from a cozy, rocky shore, it’s marked by the sounds of lapping waves and early morning bird calls. I used the remaining 12 minutes of the field recording as background for the other 3 tracks on my EP, The Island, which can be heard at thenewrunes.bandcamp.com and soundcloud.com/thenewrunes .”

You know how every +1 sword in 5e feels like it came off the same enchanted assembly line? "Congratulations adventurer — your reward is… statistically adequate." This week, the crew grabs a metaphorical chisel, carves glowing symbols into that boredom, and asks: What if your weapon didn't just hit harder — what if it screamed cosmic philosophy while doing it? From axiomatic swords enforcing universal order to anarchic axes overthrowing alignment conventions, we dive into Pathfinder 2e rune system mechanics, shamelessly loot them for D&D 5e magic item customization, and then escalate into tone-bending chaos where you might play villain henchmen or survive horror scenarios for fun. Because nothing says "balanced campaign design" like rewriting metaphysics with Nordic graffiti and then handing the party an axe that hates bureaucracy. Show Notes In this episode, the RPGBOT crew examines one of tabletop fantasy's most persistent mechanical gripes: magic items in Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition often feel numerically incremental rather than creatively transformative. The discussion pivots toward Pathfinder 2e's rune system, positioning it as a compelling model for deeper customization through layered item enhancement rather than static bonuses. The hosts unpack the distinctions between fundamental and property runes, emphasizing how property runes add unique mechanical effects to weapons and armor, producing gameplay that's both expressive and modular. They explore how these mechanics could be translated into homebrew D&D campaigns, addressing balance through level-based restrictions, rarity adjustments, and vulnerability considerations. Attention shifts toward practical experimentation — allowing multiple runes per item, adjusting enhancement bonuses, and porting armor runes to broaden defensive options. The conversation also touches on systemic design trends like emerging magic item pricing guidance in OneD&D, which could make cross-system adaptation easier for DMs. In true RPGBOT fashion, the episode expands beyond mechanics into narrative structure: The crew suggests using rune-inspired item shifts as gateways for tonal experimentation, recommending session-zero communication, short tonal arcs, villain-perspective one-shots, or survival-horror side stories to re-energize campaigns. The result is an episode that blends TTRPG system design analysis, cross-system mechanical hacking, and campaign tone strategy, demonstrating how rules innovation can reshape storytelling possibilities at the table. Key Takeaways Standard D&D 5e magic item mechanics often rely on numeric scaling rather than narrative identity. Pathfinder 2e rune mechanics provide modular item customization through layered enhancements. Property runes introduce unique combat and thematic effects beyond simple bonuses. Use level restrictions and rarity mapping to maintain balance. Experiment with multiple runes per item for player agency. Extend rune logic to armor for broader gear diversity. Price transparency (e.g., OneD&D item costs) supports homebrew adaptation. Rune mechanics illustrate modular system design principles applicable across TTRPGs. Discuss tonal changes openly with players before implementation. Run experimental arcs or villain POV sessions for variety. Horror survival scenarios can reframe player motivation and stakes. In this week's episode, we're joined by Nordic witch, rune reader, and author of Queering the Runes, Siri Vincent Plouff, for a deep and delightfully bird-filled dive into runic magic. Siri shares the wild origin story of being claimed by Odin via the infamous “Minneapolis Murder” of crows, how that encounter led them into Heathenry, and what it really means to build a relationship with the runes as living spirits. We unpack common misconceptions about Norse culture, hint it is more than just Viking bros and dreads, the impact of Christianization on the myths, and how Hollywood has flattened an incredibly rich and complex spiritual history. Most importantly, we explore what it means to queer the runes, both as an identity and as a verb. Siri breaks down gender fluidity and performance in Old Norse mythology, Loki's shapeshifting chaos, Odin's relationship to feminine magic, and how queering spiritual systems helps us break out of rigid, heteronormative frameworks. We also talk about ethical rune practice, avoiding white supremacist co-optation, and simple low spoon ways to incorporate runes into daily life, including body poses, pocket magic, and protection work. Whether you're rune curious or already in deep, this conversation will expand your understanding of Nordic magic and maybe even your definition of tradition itself.Find more about Siri below:WebsitePatreonHeathen's Journey PodcastChaos and Cunning PodcastBlueSkyInstagramTikTokRegister for the Queering the Runes courseOrder Molly's book Mundane Magic A Lazy Witch's Guide to Hacking Your Brain, Building a Daily Practice, and Getting Stuff DoneJoin our Patreon for bonus episodes, magical downloads, and unhinged side quests: https://www.patreon.com/demystifymagic

This is a BIG week for us in 2026....perhaps the most pivotal for our country as well Join Magdalena for a Runes divination reading to get answers for how you want to be ready to show up for the official start of the year of the horse on Tuesday, Feb 17th, also a new moon We will tone the runes in ritual as well as get a clear path of what is your truth as you also prep for Saturn/Neptune going direct in Aries this Friday at 0 degrees This is rare and HIGHLY significant... A radical revolutionary shift into your highest timelines....are you ready? On Friday, February 20, 2026, Saturn and Neptune are not just turning direct; they are forming a rare and highly significant conjunction at 0° Aries. This celestial event is considered a major "cosmic reset," marking the beginning of a new 36-year cycle. Here are the key details about this event: The Conjunction (Feb 20, 2026): Saturn (structure, discipline) and Neptune (dreams, spirituality) align at the very first degree of the zodiac, 0° Aries. Significance: This is considered one of the most transformative astrological events of the decade. It last occurred in 1989 in Capricorn (coinciding with the fall of the Berlin Wall) and hasn't happened in Aries in over 2,000 years. Energy and Themes: This alignment signifies a moment where "dreams get real," blending imaginative visions with practical, disciplined action. It is a time for building new structures and taking bold, conscious steps forward. Direct Movement: Both planets are moving direct in the sign of Aries, with Saturn having entered Aries on February 13, 2026, and Neptune having entered on January 26, 2026. The "Aries Point": As they meet at 0° Aries, the "Aries Point," the energy is highly proactive and foundational, urging a move from "faking it" to "making it real". This event is not a one-day disaster but a historic, long-term shift that influences personal and collective consciousness, acting as a "great reset" for how we approach our ambitions and spiritual goals. Sats Terminal is the first native Bitcoin super app, bringing together Bitcoin loans, yield, and trading in a single interface and developer SDK. Sats Terminal is backed by YZi Labs (formerly Binance Labs), Coinbase Ventures, and Draper Associates. The founders of Sats Terminal recently joined the Bitcoin.com News Podcast to talk about the technology.Stan Havryliuk (CEO and Co-Founder) and Rishabh Java (CTO and Co-Founder) of Sats Terminal shared their journey, starting with their backgrounds in crypto and fintech. Stan had previous experience with Bitcoin.com and running a large Eastern European exchange, while Java had built and sold a fintech company, finding crypto to be a more open building environment. The inspiration for Sats Terminal stemmed from a highly problematic user experience Stan encountered while trading BRC20s, which resulted in him overpaying significantly for a single token. This incident highlighted a clear need for good, user-friendly interfaces in the growing Bitcoin DeFi market to encourage wider adoption. The two founders met online while working on a previous project and formalized their partnership after meeting in person in Buenos Aires. The company secured notable financial backing from major investors. Java's connection to Coinbase Ventures was established after winning an AI agent hackathon at their San Francisco office, which led to a successful pitch. Stan described how they were quickly accepted into the YZi Labs (aka Binance Labs) accelerator program after applying shortly before the deadline on a friend's recommendation, benefiting from a good product growth trajectory at the time. They also received early backing from the Draper family of VCs, including Draper Associates, Draper Dragon, and Boost VC. Stan's key advice for aspiring startups seeking funding is to "just keep building" and iterating fast, emphasizing that consistency compounds into success, alongside networking and participating in hackathons.Java elaborated on the evolution of native Bitcoin assets, moving from Ordinals to BRC20s and then to the improved Runes standard. He reported that Sats Terminal has already captured approximately 70% of the market share for trading Runes, showcasing their success in the ecosystem. They also acknowledged that the Bitcoin ecosystem's complexity, due to the lack of a central authority, means the market will ultimately decide which token standard becomes the long-term winner. The core of Sats Terminal's vision is encapsulated in their motto: "never sell your Bitcoin," but instead to make it work through products like trading, earning, and borrowing. Stan highlighted their belief that Bitcoin is the "only pristine collateral for loans," and their products are laying the groundwork for Bitcoin's transition from "digital gold" to a "productive asset." Java detailed their Borrow product as a self-custody, trust-minimized cross-chain loan solution where users can collateralize their Bitcoin for a loan without KYC. Stan announced that the first version of the Earn product, designed to simplify DeFi complexity for end-users, is being finalized and expected to go live in the next few weeks.Stan Havryliuk, CEO and Co-Founder of Sats Terminal, early Bitcoin investor and Web3 veteran with over eight years of experience scaling crypto businesses worldwide. Ex-Bitcoin.com and zondacrypto.com (BitBay.com).Rishabh Java, CTO and Co-Founder of Sats Terminal, serial entrepreneur, inventor, and Bitcoin builder with a proven track record of creating great technologies. Winner of 50 international hackathons, awarded by Steve Wozniak at 15 for BCI tech and exited Web2 startup at 21.To learn more about the project visit the website, and follow the team on X.

RUNES, TAVERN MESSAGES, AND HIDDEN HISTORIES Colleague Eleanor Barraclough. John Batchelorinterviews Eleanor Barraclough about her book, Embers of the Hands: Hidden Histories of the Viking Age. They discuss a specific runic inscription from roughly 1200 AD found on a piece of wood in a tavern in Bergen, Norway. The message is from a woman named Gyda telling her husband to come home, to which he seemingly carved a nonsensical, drunken response. Barraclough explains her methodology of using such everyday objects—"embers of the hands"—to reveal the personal lives of individuals often lost in the grand scope of history. The segment also establishes the 793 AD raid on Lindisfarne as the traditional, shocking start of the Viking Age. NUMBER 1
