Training to become an Olympic athlete is difficult. Training to be a Royal Air Force (RAF) pilot and fighting in a World War is difficult. And yet Arthur Wint did not one, but all three of these things. I have Christian Hanley with me in this episode who ia a regular contributor in this show where we talk about The Afghanistan crisis. Two decades after they were driven out, the Taliban returned to power in Kabul last weekend. After the US invastion in 2001, weeks after the 9/11 attacks, the Taliban withdrew and many of its fighters took refuge in neighbouring Pakistan. So, what has changed in the last 20 years and what happens next? Christian Hanley is President & Founder of Defiance Strategies, a public relations and strategic communications firm for progressive candidates, non-profit leaders, and socially conscious entrepreneurs. As a developer of messaging and strategy for candidates, nationwide nonprofits, and organizational leaders, Christian has an ear for strategic communications and an eye for winning tactics. In his professional life, Christian enjoys working with innovative leaders looking to position themselves for success in an upcoming election, in their next PR campaign, or as a thought leader in their chosen industry. He believes that with an aggressive strategy, appealing creative, and a little training, there's no reason a thoughtful leader can't get the recognition she or he deserves, not in an era of digital campaigns and social media marketing. His firm, Defiance Strategies, is currently accepting new clients ready to take their communications strategy to the next level, whether through public speaking coaching, complete professional setup of their campaign, comprehensive communications consulting, an all-in-one package for their campaign, or a training for their senior staff. Because the firm offers both comprehensive solutions and standalone, unbundled services, there is no project too big or too small. Christian received his Juris Doctor (JD) from the Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C. and his Bachelor's (BA) magna cum laude from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He is also a proud alumnus of the Williston Northampton School and School Year Abroad (S.Y.A.). Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Anwar was raised in Penang, Malaysia, before moving abroad to live in several countries. He graduated with a B.Sc. (Hons) Naval Architecture from the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne (United Kingdom,1979) and an MBA from IMD, Lausanne (Switzerland,1988). He works closely with Entrepreneurs and CEO's as a Mentor and Business Coach. Anwar serves on the Advisory Panel of the Taylor's University School of Hospitality and School of Business. He has been a Mentor at the Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC) for the SE Accelerator Program - Malaysia's first social enterprise accelerator designed to improve lives and build a sustainable world. Anwar has over 40 years of business and management experience covering several different industries. His entrepreneurial spirit and interest in management sciences started with his job at FELS-Singapore, where he worked for several years. It was the entrepreneurial culture at FELS, that allowed the company to continually re-invent itself and stay relevant. He was first employed at a shipyard in Newcastle, England, which closed just 8 years after he left. FELS on the other hand continues to operate. These and other experiences made him realize that to survive companies need to adopt entrepreneurial practices. Anwar and Sri Vadrevu collaborated to write their book, which was published in 2017; 9-Entrepreneurisms – Management for a VUCA World. Put simply, Anwar and Sri Vadrevu remind corporate executives, “You don't have to start a business to be an entrepreneur”. The book highlights nine specific traits or practices that executives need to adopt in order to build agile and sustainable companies. Most companies will resist getting to get to the root of their problem and instead stick with a “band-aid solution” type of action. 9-Entrepreneurisms lays out a methodology for executives to re-evaluate, not just themselves, but the structure of the organization. Anwar is committed to bringing his learnings to every business and corporation. He encourages you to: Manage Like an Entrepreneur | Lead Like an Entrepreneur | Sell Like an Entrepreneur | Hire Like an Entrepreneur | Work Like an Entrepreneur. Time to Get Real About Coping with Cancer Cynthia Hayes

Cynthia Hayes Bio A former freelance journalist, management consultant, and marketing executive, I have spent a lifetime preparing to write and market this book. An early writing career (with by-lines in Savvy, Working Women, Advertising Age, Advertising Week and TV Guide, among others) taught me the basics of interviewing, synthesizing information, finding the headlines, and telling a compelling story. After a brief interruption to earn an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, I further honed these skills over 30 years of management consulting, where my success continued to rely on my ability to jump into new topics, pull sensitive information out of sometimes reluctant interviewees, digest specialized knowledge, and raft a persuasive narrative that turned complex findings into easy-to-digest guidance. Additionally, as an adjunct professor at the NYU Stern School of Business and executive trainer I developed courses and taught thousands of professionals, speaking frequently in front of large groups, answering difficult questions on the spot, and conveying enthusiasm for new ideas and challenging concepts. Shortly prior to my own cancer diagnosis, I resigned from Montefiore Medical Center, where for three years I served as vice president and chief marketing officer. In addition to providing a deeper understanding of the medical world, this experience gave me an opportunity to sharpen the marketing knowledge gained through my consulting practice and build relationships with many professionals in the cancer field. Having returned to the writing profession, I recently completed my first novel and am now dedicated full-time to the completion of The Big Ordeal.
