When Ellen Jovin first walked outside her Manhattan apartment building ( September 21, 2018) and set up a folding table with a GRAMMAR TABLE sign, it took about thirty seconds to get her first visitor. Everyone had a question for her. The Grammar Table was such a hit—attracting the attention of The New York Times, NPR, and CBS Evening News—that Ellen soon took it on the road, traveling across the US to answer questions from writers, lawyers, businesspeople, students, bickering couples, and anyone else who uses words in this world. Episode 42 - In this first episode of season 3, Heather speaks with Tetsu Yung, a well-known polyglot and multilingual father in the bi/multilingual parenting community. Tetsu himself grew up multilingual and is now raising his four children to speak five languages (Mandarin, Japanese, French, English and Spanish). We first talk about his journey learning languages and all the places it took him before focusing on his family and multilingual parenting. How does his family balance five languages? One method they use for one language in particular is having an au pair. It’s a laugh filled 30th episode as the boys bring on Ian’s buddy and self-proclaimed “later to life polyglot” Joshuah Pursley, who has lots to tell of his language journey as an adult, which started at age 33. Josh recounts growing up in Arizona and the historic presence of latinos there as well as immigrant communities in other states. Josh dives deep into his affection for Indonesian, the vast complexity of the African languages including his own Swahili learning and his skepticism to learning created languages like Esperanto and Klingon. Josh talks of being a parent teaching languages, his experience at the Polyglot Conference and gives his impressions on Japan and South Korea.

Richard Simcott is a "hyperpolyglot" who speaks over a dozen languages fluently and many dozen to various levels; a feat that led HarperCollins to name him one of Britain's most multilingual people. He is also the co-founder of the Polyglot Conference, an annual event that brings together polyglots, linguists, and lovers of language from all over the world (the event will be online this year from October 16 to 25, 2020). He returns to the Language Mastery Show six years after our first conversation to talk about how he juggles so many languages, the "minimum effective dose" required to move a language project forward, and how he chooses which languages to pursue. I had the pleasure of interviewing Jesse Byock, professor of Old Norse and Medieval Scandinavian Studies at UCLA and Háskóli Íslands for the All Things Iceland Podcast. We sat down in his lovely apartment in Reykjavík to chat about his book “Viking Language 1: Learn Old Norse, Runes, and Icelandic Sagas”. I met Jesse at the 2017 Polyglot Conference in Reykjavík, Iceland after seeing the captivating cover of his book (below) that was laying on the table.  I ended up having a chat with Jesse about living in Iceland, the Icelandic language and the Viking Language book series. As an archaeologist and an expat that has lived in Iceland for decades, Jesse has some fascinating stories to share. You will hear some of them in this interview. Viking Language 1 - A Brief Overview Can you guess what the creature is on the front cover of his book? Jesse reveals the answer at 24:05 in the podcast. Viking Language 1 is a grammar book for beginners that want an introduction to Old Norse, but it goes beyond the normal humdrum grammar book. Over the course of 20 years, Jesse developed this book based on the feedback he received from his students while teaching Old Norse.  Instead of just cramming the book with rote grammar and vocabulary exercises, he decided to weave in tidbits of history, culture and stories in between the exercises. He also included maps that display where Vikings traveled in Europe and North America. This refreshing approach made doing the exercises fun.  History and culture enthusiasts will be delighted with the plethora of information he provides. While Jesse uses this book to teach Old Norse in the classroom, he stated in the interview that he structured the book so people could use it for independent learning. As a do-it-yourself kind of person, I appreciate the effort he made to create a book that is also useful for people who are not taking a class. Ellen Jovin is a polyglot, writer and the founder of Syntaxis, a communication skills training firm based in New York. In 2009, she started a project to learn as much as she could of the languages spoken in New York in a year. But once she started, she never stopped - her schedule has included 21 different languages involving a total of nine different alphabets and writing systems - and she’s still going strong with no end in sight. Ellen’s an accomplished polyglot and an excellent communicator as I found out when we met at the Polyglot Conference in Thessaloniki, where she gave a fantastic talk on language learning products. Michael Levi Harris is an actor, filmmaker and polyglot who runs the accent coaching business My Accent Guy. Michael trained at the Guildhall School in London as an actor and has since been involved in a number of theatre productions. He also wrote and starred in the short film 'The Hyperglot'. Actors are masters of using body language and non-verbal communication to develop characters and connect with an audience. But these techniques have many applications across disciplines from language learning to public speaking. Michael gave one of the most entertaining talks at the Polyglot Conference on how to apply acting techniques to language learning, so I reached out to find out what other areas these techniques could be applied to.
