How do dramatic questions create tension? In this episode, Stu and Chas delve into the cultural phenomenon of ADOLESCENCE. We try to find the craft tools that have made the show so compelling and such a catalyst for conversation. In particular, we breakdown how the show's emphasis on questions creates tension: not just tension through plot, but tension through character, and ultimately tension through theme. We analsyse the show episode-by-episode, and discuss how the overall structure skilfully shifts from a plot-heavy police procedural towards a thematic-heavy melodrama and the impact that has on our experience. We discuss how the decision to shoot the show in a series of “oners” affects the writing and what tools we can take from that to apply to our own writing (even if we're not writing it to be a one-shot): POV characters, handovers, French scenes, emotional events, and more. On this episode of the podcast, host Dr Pasquale Iannone explores the little-known early films of one of the most influential filmmakers of all time, German director Douglas Sirk. Sirk is synonymous with one particular genre. His most famous films, such as Magnificent Obsession (1954), All That Heaven Allows (1955), Written on the Wind (1956) and Imitation of Life (1959) are glossy, luxurious Technicolor melodramas which would go on to inspire the likes of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Todd Haynes and many others. But there is more to Sirk than melodrama - he made war films, crime movies, historical dramas and comedies in a career spanning over 25 years and several countries. Earlier this year, Eureka Entertainment released a box set titled Sirk in Germany (1934 - 1935), a collection which takes us all the way back to the beginning of Sirk's film career. The set includes beautiful restorations of his first three features as well as several short films, all of which were made in the early years of the Nazi regime. Alongside bonus material from noted film historians Sheldon Hall and Tim Bergfelder, there are three audio commentaries from the University of Edinburgh's very own David Melville Wingrove. David is a Teaching Fellow at the University's Centre for Open Learning where he teaches hugely popular courses on both film and literature, specialising in dark and fantastical themes and styles. He is also a prolific writer, regularly contributing to publications such as Senses of Cinema. David and Pasquale discuss Sirk's first short film Two Greyhounds (1934) and his first feature April! April! (1935), both light comedies centring on mistaken identity which skewer - mostly with affection - the mores of the German middle class. David helps to place the films in historical context and he also tells Pasquale why Sirk, who was very much one of the leading lights of the German theatre in the late 20s and early 30s, decided to make the move into filmmaking.

We're thrilled to be joined by Natalie Ng, a huge Edward Yang fan and friend of the podcast, to dive into Yang's feature debut, That Day, On The Beach! Natalie, who works at the Asian Film Archive, tells us about AFA's recent Edward Yang retrospective (complete with a physical exhibition) and shares her deep love for Yang's work.Together, we explore the film's place in Yang's filmography, its inventive narrative structure, and how it set the stage for his later masterpieces. Natalie highlights the agency of female characters in the film, while Ben argues that De-wei should have been hotter. Wilson leads us in discussing Christopher Doyle's first feature work as a cinematographer and the stylistic choices of the film, and we very importantly discuss Sylvia Chang's iconic perm, and whether girlbossing is an ideal ending for Yang's female characters.Links:Natalie's Letterboxd review on That Day, On The BeachFollow Natalie on X (@schatzepages), Letterboxd (@wednesdaydreams), and read her writing on filmedinether.com.That Day, On Our FREE patreon, discord server, and our socials @ www.deepcutpod.comTimestamps:(00:00) Intro(11:17) General Reactions(25:18) Natalie's personal reaction to the film(29:47) Melodrama and female agency(34:35) Edward Yang's “Women without men” + Digression into other Yang films(41:49) Ending of That Day(45:47) Qing-qing and Jia-sen's roles in the story(50:52) Jia-li's love interests(54:40) Tone and filmic style(01:02:55) Other films That Day relates to(01:07:15) Babies(01:10:32) The Perm and costumes(01:15:04) Yang's early fascination with women's stories(01:21:36) Wrap-up
We have a special treat for you today! Vanessa recently guested on Hannah's other pop-culture podcast, Material Girls, to talk about The Notebook with Hannah and Marcelle. It was so good, we wanted to make sure you knew about it. And if you love hearing Vanessa, Hannah, and Marcelle in conversation – good news, there's another episode out there! Vanessa was on Material Girls last year to talk about Bridgerton. Material Girls Episode Description: She's back! Beloved podcaster and author Vanessa Zoltan (she/her) joins Hannah and Marcelle to dig into one of the most famous "weepies" of the 21st century: The Notebook (2004). If you cry at the line "If you're a bird, I'm a bird," have the phrase "What do you want?" ringing in your head, or regularly view the 2005 MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss, then this episode is for you. Hannah first contextualizes The Notebook in early aughts America (think post 9/11 conservative politics) and Vanessa offers some info about Nicholas Sparks, author of The Notebook. They then jump into a theory section all about melodrama! You may be familiar with the concept — perhaps you've even accused a friend or family member of being melodramatic — but can you really define it? What about the idea of "a Melodrama of Failure?" Hannah turns to Elisabeth Robin Anker's book, Orgies of Feeling: Melodrama and the Politics of Freedom, to bolster her thesis and the episode ends with a conversation about the relationship between the American Dream, sovereignty, Christian conservatism and heterosexuality. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Breakups can feel like the end of the world, but they're really just the beginning of something better (even though you may not see that light at the end of the tunnel yet). In this episode, I break down why turning your breakup into a dramatic, life-ending event only makes it harder to move on. Instead of wallowing in sadness and replaying the past, it's time to treat your breakup like a reset - a chance to reassess, rebuild, and create a new version of yourself. Listen NOW! Ghost in the machine!!This week, Kate and Brodie talk about doing karaoke, should we watch I'm Not There again?, last we saw each other Brodie was going to a hen's do and Kate went to a kick-on at a house owned by someone whose dog is Top Chef's instagram friend (sure!) and to a bar called Disco Pantera, Brodie got a DM NDA for a hot Melbourne cocktail, the dog who works at the Park Hyatt is retiring this month, does Melbourne need more breakfast spots (not cafes!).We watched a lot of stuff over the break! Kate watched The Lady Vanishes, Brodie's going to the movies again to see A Different Man and Lee, Brodie saw An Unmarried Woman and tries to do the Nosferatu voice (sorry), she's confused the Lighthouse and Swiss Army Man (and also confused that movie's farting corpse with one about a propellor penis WHOOPS sorry don't @ her). They both watched Heretic (Kate's nephew's introduction to Hugh Grant was the Oompa Loompa in Wonka), The Room Next Door, Anora, All We Imagine as Light and Better Man – shockingly we have very different responses to Monkey Robbie Williams. Kate also watched The Lost Daughter finally – the audio of that bit cut out SORRY!! Brodie saw Wicked for a third time (hehe) and Kate's been visiting Somebody Somewhere and loved Bad Sisters season 2 – BL less so. This episode is a little smaller in scope than usual. But like one my great podcasting heroes, my ambition for this show is to tell the history of film without any gaps. We cover two examples of an important, though ultimately short lived, sub-genre: The Patriotic Melodrama. We discuss and analyze the 1916 film Alsace, directed by Henri Pouctal, and the 1917 Mothers of Frances, directed by René Hervi . Ho Ho Ho Ho-ello there! It has come upon us once again: the Christmas season. And as was aforementioned, its getting darker. We must let you know that this was not planned... or our tolerance levels are so out of whack that we've blackened our souls and have detached ourselves from societal norms...Annnnyyyywwwaaaayyyyyy, there's nothing more Christmas-sy than Lars Von Trier! And this film; starring Stellan Skarsgård and Emily Watson, in her first film role, lets us know that we're in for a rough ride for a good 2 hours and 40 mins. Thankfully, it's all set on an "unnamed Scottish Isle" where everyone's accents are all over the place, the sideburns are "pure 70s", the medical equipment looks outdated, and it's all brown. And that means we're in the past.DESCEND INTO THE DARKNESS WITH US ALL!

Sweeney Todd is a fictional character who first appeared as the villain of the Penny Dreadful serial The String of Pearls (1846–1847). The original tale became a feature of 19th-century Melodrama and London Legend. A Barber from Fleet Street, Todd murders his customers with a straight razor and gives their corpses to Mrs Lovett, his partner in crime, who bakes there flesh into meat pies. The tale has been retold many times since in various media. Claims that Sweeney Todd was a historical person are disputed strongly by scholars, although possible legendary prototypes exist. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ang189/support

On this week's show, June Thomas (author of A Place of Our Own: Six Spaces That Shaped Queer Women's Culture) and Dan Kois (author of Hampton Heights) fill in for Dana and Stephen. First, the panel tackles It Ends With Us starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni (the latter also directed and produced the film.) It's a big, glossy melodrama laced with a domestic violence plot, and is the first film adaptation of BookTok star author Colleen Hoover. Then, the three explore Time Bandits, a new television show from Jermaine Clement, Iain Morris, and Taika Watiti starring, among others, a sublime Lisa Kudrow. The Apple TV+ series is based on Terry Gilliam's 1981 film of the same name and follows a ragtag bunch of bandits as they thieve and travel through time. Finally, in light of its 20-year anniversary, the trio considers Yelp – does the crowd-sourcing review platform still hold power in 2024? This conversation was inspired by Jaya Saxena's Eater piece, “Everybody Gets a Star.” On this week's exclusive Slate Plus bonus episode, the panel goes on the hunt for the wonderful, elusive “perfect cracker.” Email us at culturefest@slate.com. Éric Rohmer ends his famous "Tales of the Four Seasons" with "Autumn Tale". It's a French romance comedy about a woman who operates a vineyard, thinks about the idea of dating again and it focuses on the middle age folks, which is a bit different from the other season films. Magali's friends decide to take matters into their own hands and get matches for her. At this wedding party, it all goes down and it's an iconic scene itself. I love the film for it's rich and engaging screenplay and the actors who make these characters very real, especially when they conversate which is a huge strength that Rohmer. This film gives us insight to people who are older and wiser. We see a perspective that's almost too foreign for us especially if we dont match the same age. I can wacth this film all day and so should you.I give it four out of four tokes.#ericrohmer #filmreview #autumntale
"Todo Sobre Mi Madre" is one of Pedro Almovodvar's great films especially of the 90s. It's a complex drama surrounding a mother dealing with her only son's death and actually doing something about it. She goes into a spiral of events that eventually answers deeper questions of her past lives. It's almost that thing where you can't lead into the future unless you can let go of the past. A great film because it's full of laughs and legitimate drama. Thw riting is excellent because gets sucked in and the cast that highlights it makes you wonder why they haven't been on the big screen. You can see greatness even from the small, local stage.Four out of four tokes.#allaboutmymother #pedroalmodovar #filmreview
This Wednesday episode bounces all over the place with no real flow or plan. Andy and Brendan begin with a few unsubstantiated rumors, discuss the power of Dan Pohl, the absurd equipment advantages of today, and read some tweets from the Sun Day Red account. Then they get into some scuttlebutt on a couple LIV topics, namely an endangered species and some discontent with teammates. They wander about the results from U.S. Open sectional qualifying, outlining some of the better stories and the variety of venues that produce different types of qualifiers. At the Memorial, they discuss Jack's gripe about the dates, and how it feels like the same song from him, even if he's not totally wrong. They also discuss the field and a potential mid-life crisis cutthroat corner candidate. They close with news of Xander Schauffele letting loose on Jay Monahan with some fiery quotes about him taking charge, standing up, and leading.
Welcome to the "Epic of Marcos." In this tale of a family that's larger than life, Ferdinand Marcos, the former dictator of the Philippines, is at the center. But the figures that surround him are just as important: Imelda, his wife and muse; Bongbong, his heir; and the United States, his faithful sidekick. The story of the Marcos family is a blueprint for authoritarianism, laying out clearly how melodrama, paranoia, love, betrayal and a hunger for power collide to create a myth capable of propelling a nation. Today on the show, the rise, fall, and resurrection of a dynasty — and what that means for democracy worldwide. To access bonus episodes and listen to Throughline sponsor-free, subscribe to Throughline+ via Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org/throughline.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
