Joe Boruchow is a Philadelphia based muralist and paper cutout artist whose site- specific work is designed to fit into architectural niches and public spaces. Born and raised in the Washington DC area, he moved to Philadelphia in 1997.The self-taught artist started working in paper cutout in 2003 and has been consistently exploring ways to transcend the traditional medium, translating his designs into large scale murals, graphic novels, fine art prints and metal wall hangings. Inspired by his surroundings, current events and architecture, his black and white installations have become iconic in the Philadelphia region. His work explores themes of race, sexuality, politics, history and art, all through the subtractive art of paper cutout. His designs are all created from a single piece of black paper where all the white sections are excised by hand with an exacto blade and all the black sections must connect to the whole. Often quite small, the original paper cutouts are scaled up to fit their intended space. He was a finalist for Pew Fellowship and has worked on major murals with the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. His graphic novel, “Stuffed Animals” was awarded a Xeric Grant for graphic fiction. As a visiting artist, he is often called upon to lecture and instruct at colleges such as The University of the Arts and institutions such as The Barnes Foundation and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His commissioned and uncommisioned work have gained a large regional following and has been covered by national and international press and blogs.Exhibitions of his original paper cutouts continue to astonish followers of his work with their intricacy and craftsmanship. The intimate scale of the paper cutouts contrasted with his monumental murals, create a tension between the private and public aspects of the work. The blend of craft and concept combine to create powerful graphic images that transform the spaces that they inhabit.Featured in This Episode Keith Haring Brittney Griner The Truth In This ArtThe Truth In This Art is a podcast interview series supporting vibrancy and development of Baltimore & beyond's arts and culture. To find more amazing stories from the artist and entrepreneurial scenes in & around Baltimore, check out my episode directory. Stay in TouchNewsletter sign-upSupport my podcastShareable link to episodeWelcome to the Truth In This Art Beyond: Philadelphia! The Autonomous Creative
How to make a career out of art, with Tom Hart

The Autonomous Creative

Tom Hart is a cartoonist, and he's the founder and executive director of a comics school, The Sequential Artists Workshop. His 2016 memoir, Rosalie Lightning, debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list. Tom offers amazing, valuable insights about the path to creative career success—and that what “success” looks like must be self-defined, always. For Tom, that means freedom is number one. When he has creative autonomy, he's happy. Tom spoke about the invisible bargains we make to have a life lived in alignment with our ideals and creative goals. He asked: What are we willing to live with? How much fear? How much shame? How much financial precarity? We talked about why “shame” comes into it, and how to get over it. And we talked about why financial precarity isn't a prerequisite for creative autonomy and freedom. To get that message out, we all need to be talking more openly and clearly about what's happening behind closed doors, in creatives' lives. More from the episode… “Success is…can I make things that mean something to me and can I help people make things that mean something to them and that isn't just feeding a commercial engine?” – Why Tom believes success is more than just churning out work. How has the desire to be seen impacted Tom's creative process? We discuss Tom's memoir, Rosalie Lightning, and how his unique creative practice gave him the tools to process grief. For years, Tom believed he needed multiple sources of income. Why has he decided to focus his revenue stream? Tom reflects on an encounter that helped him let go of financial shame: “If a lawyer is saying the same thing I'm saying, then I just might as well stay an artist.” “Nobody was happy and everybody worked all the time…and that's the hole I'm always trying to plug.” – To what extend does scarcity fuel artistic ambition? Tom describes the awakening that inspired him to found the Sequential Artists Workshop: “Some people like my books, but they're not going to pay the bills. There are other creative things I can do that can pay the bills.” Sometimes, pursing your creative vision is a matter of bargaining: “I didn't realize that having a high-paying job in advertising doing work for Sony and McDonald's was making a living from your art.” Why is money a taboo conversation, even between friends, and what's the benefit of speaking up? Tom reminds us: “Nothing is scary about art.” More from Tom Hart: Tom Hart is a cartoonist and the Executive Director of The Sequential Artists Workshop, a school and arts organization in Gainesville, Florida. He was a core instructor at New York City's School of Visual Arts for 10 years, teaching cartooning to undergraduates, working adults and teens alike. His 2016 memoir, Rosalie Lightning debuted at #1 on the NY Times Bestseller List and has been featured on many end of year Best-Of lists. He is the creator of the Hutch Owen series of graphic novels and books, and has been nominated for all the major industry awards. He was an early recipient of a Xeric Grant for self-publishing cartoonists, and has been on many best-of lists in the Comics Journal and other comix publications. He has been called “One of the great underrated cartoonists of our time” by Eddie Campbell and “One of my favorite cartoonists of the decade” by Scott McCloud. His daily Hutch Owen comic strip ran for 2 years in newspapers in New York and Boston, and his strip “Ali's House”, co-created with Margo Dabaie was picked up by King Features Syndicate. After winning a Xeric Grant for his original comic, The Myth of 8-Opus, he became more widely known for his collaboration with Joe Casey, Gødland, which was an unapologetic love letter to cosmic Kirby style. He then spent some time writing and drawing Transformers vs. G.I. Joe for IDW, and most recently Scioli gained critical acclaim with his comic book biography, Jack Kirby: The Epic Life of the King of Comics. (You can hear our podcast on it here.) The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview New York Times Best Selling Author Box Brown. Miami Book Nov 13-20th. Box Brown is an Ignatz Award-winning American cartoonist whose first work was the online comic Bellen!. He was the winner of a 2011 Xeric Grant for the comic Love is a Peculiar Type of Thing. It is, perhaps, the perfect video game. Simple yet addictive, Tetris delivers an irresistible, unending puzzle that has players hooked. Play it long enough and you'll see those brightly colored geometric shapes everywhere. You'll see them in your dreams. Alexey Pajitnov had big ideas about games. In 1984, he created Tetris in his spare time while developing software for the Soviet government. Once Tetris emerged from behind the Iron Curtain, it was an instant hit. Nintendo, Atari, Sega—game developers big and small all wanted Tetris. A bidding war was sparked, followed by clandestine trips to Moscow, backroom deals, innumerable miscommunications, and outright theft.  New York Times–bestselling author Box Brown untangles this complex history and delves deep into the role games play in art, culture, and commerce. For the first time and in unparalleled detail, Tetris: The Games People Play tells the true story of the world's most popular video game.

Andy and Derek are proud to have Gene Luen Yang on the podcast. With the upcoming release of his new book from First Second, The Shadow Hero (illustrated by Sonny Lieu), the Two Guys thought this would be the perfect opportunity to talk with one of their contemporary creator heroes. In this engaging conversation, Gene talks with the guys about the genesis of his Green Turtle, and how the original – an obscure ethnically ambiguous crime fighter from the pages of 1940s' Blazing Comics — inspired him to delve into the superhero genre. Demonstrating a keen sense of pacing, along with a healthy dose of humor, Yang shows himself adept in action-packed comics, something that the guys comment on throughout the interview. But as Derek and Andy both observe, The Shadow Hero nonetheless bears that unique Gene Yang stamp in wrestling with ethnoracial issues in the U.S., and doing so through the meshing of Chinese folklore and American pop culture. In this way, the book can be read as a thematic companion of such earlier books as Level Up, The Eternal Smile, Boxers and Saints, and of course American Born Chinese (all published by First Second). The Two Guys ask Gene about these earlier books, as well, discussing along the way his views on writing for a young adult audience, his 1997 Xeric Grant for Gordon Yamamoto and the King of the Geeks, and his contributions to the New York Times Magazine‘s “Funny Pages” feature (later collected as Prime Baby). All in all, it's a super fun conversation…and on top of that, Andy and Derek can now say that they've had a National Book Award nominee on The Comics Alternative!
