Show notes: In this 69th episode, I took a trip up the street to the new Bricks & Minifigs shop in my neck of the woods- Hernando, MS. Long time Mid-South Cartoonists Association member Dr. Kevin Thorn and his wife Tammy Blackman Thorn are the owners of not only a new franchised LEGO themed shop, but what looks to be one of the coolest shops in the mid-south area! I talked to the couple about the genesis of going into business with each other on this new Bricks & Minifigs franchise opportunity in their home town, their plans for the future of the local shop (parties, workshops, art gallery, and more!), and their love of LEGO. The Bricks & Minifigs Hernando shop will be officially opening in January 2025 (hopefully Jan. 11th), but fingers crossed they plan a soft opening on Black Friday- or as they call it, "Block Friday" and the Christmas shopping season. They were doing a "Buy Day" buying event when I stopped by to visit, and many folks were stopping buy to trade in their LEGO sets and loose bricks for cash. One cool thing about the used bricks is that the Hernando Bricks & Minifigs shop will not only be washing all the bricks they take in, they will also regularly be disinfecting all the ones in their loose bins, too! You will be able to buy new and used LEGO sets, mini-figs, and loose bricks to create your own plastic creations. This brand new Bricks & Minifigs store is located at 210 E. Commerce Street, Suite #7 in Hernando, MS. From Memphis head south on I-55 to exit 280 (Hernando/Commerce Street), turn right on Commerce Street, stay in the left lane, go past the McDonalds, and turn right after the R/R tracks. The shop is in the shopping center next to Bazar's Bakery & Restaurant, and just up the street from the DeSoto County Museum and Area 51 Ice Cream. Oh, and there's a new mural inside the shop by MSCA member Greg Cravens! I also share some info on MSCA and other local events such as our recent "The Funny Pages" art show reception at Germantown Community Theatre over the weekend, and our upcoming MSCA monthly dinner meet-up and holiday art swap at Garibaldi's Pizza on December 3rd, from 6-8pm. This week, we celebrate Revolutions Per Movie's 1 year anniversary with filmmaker and actor OWEN KLINE (A24's Funny Pages), who chose one of the most anticipated music films to discuss on the podcast, THE WHO'S TOMMY. We discuss the chicken/egg of the movie vs. the lp, the baked bean mythology, Ken Russell's pre-filmmaking history from being a ballet dancer to dodging the war, Russell's early BBC Composer films, Richard Lester and Lindsay Anderson, Robert Crumb and Fantagraphics Books, being a cultural dinosaur, the concept of selling out, the precision of the film that betrays its midnight movie status, Who's Next, how the Tommy LP kept The Who from breaking up, the ARP synth, the use of repetition in both the LP and the movie, transgressive music, how and why Townshend kept changing the shape of the story of Tommy, the aborted projects LIFEHOUSE & THE ANGELS that used elements to make the film Tommy, could we pick up the concept album plot before seeing the movie (and even after seeing it!), Ann-Margret's Oscar-nominated performance, the amount of sweat that appears on actors in the film, the surprising debut acting turn of Roger Daltrey, the UK white boy blues movement, Russell's choice of having the actor sing, including Jack Nicholson's strange turn, Keith Moon's approach to Uncle Ernie, Chris's concept double album Colonel Jeffrey Pumpernickel, Tina Turner's incredible performance as the acid queen and how Mick Jagger was in talks to do the role instead, does Elton John and Tina turner steal the film, the strange final 1/3 of the film, Dauhgltrey's perfect cartwheels, acting through song and so much more!We are also joined by special guest Barry Winch, who starred in TOMMY as ‘Young Tommy'!!! He illuminates us both about being a child on the set of the strange film, what it was like working with Ken Russell, Ann-Margret & Oliver Reed, how they got honest performances out of him as a child actor, how The Who protested going to the premiere unless he was invited (since he was underage), how Ken Russell himself accidentally cast him, his family's acting history, playing hide and seek with Oliver Reed, what it felt like being on the set of that movie, what the Tommy props from the film have been auctioned at, why he wasn't allowed to wander around the set, his favorite memories and some moments of being afraid as well. All this and more as we celebrate the one year anniversary of REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE!!!OWEN KLINE:https://a24films.com/films/funny-pagesREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. Everybody loves Julia Ducournau's Titane (2022)! From wiki: “Titane (French: [titan] (listen), lit. "Titanium") is a 2021 French body horror psychological drama film[5][6] written and directed by Julia Ducournau. The French-Belgian co-production stars Agathe Rousselle in her feature film debut as Alexia, a woman who, after being injured in a car accident as a child, has a titanium plate fitted into her head. Vincent Lindon, Garance Marillier and Laïs Salameh also star.” Josh and Dru are plagued by bad vibes. They discuss Kenneth Anger (RIP) and the WGA strike. Josh is reading Bret Easton Ellis's The Shards, Drusilla loved Greener Grass, which has to be imported. Same with Dinner in America. Also discussed: Urghh! A Music War!, Funny Pages, I Think You Should Leave, Patty Harrison, An American Werewolf in London, Hell Night, Tangerine, Crash, transmasculine politics, Cabin in the Woods, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. In recent movies like “Air” and “Funny Pages,” television series like “Our Flag Means Death,” and plays like Annie Baker's “The Flick,” Matthew Maher has made a name for himself as someone who can bring an oddball or weirdo to life with enough charm, charisma, and genuine gusto to make us love him unconditionally. On this episode, he talks about his acting foundations, the tools formative teachers have given him, and some theories he has developed as a teacher himself. He explains the allure of experimental theater in 90s New York City, makes a case for embracing contradictions and obstructions in a character, and brings it all back to the simple act of “owing it.” Plus much more! Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram
Comedian and writer Sean O'Connor (Solar Opposites, Norm Macdonald Live) joins to discuss the new release AIR starring Matt Damon, Viola Davis, Ben Affleck, Jason Bateman, Matthew Maher, Chris Messina and Chris Tucker. Affleck directed this true story of marketing intrigue set in 1984, back when Nike found themselves an underdog in the growing basketball shoe market. In a risky gambit, the company courts a promising draft pick, then-20 year old Michael Jordan, vowing to build the revolutionary Air Jordan line around him. But first Nike must convince Jordan's mother, Deloris, that they can offer something their successful competitors, Converse and Adidas, cannot. Affleck's corporate comedy opened to mostly glowing reviews for its cracking script, and game performances by Damon and Davis, but can a talky movie about a selling shoes have legs with modern audiences? Take a step into this episode of MNAM as we talk AIR, plus wander off court for diversions into Babylon, Batman, Kevin Smith, Species, Under Siege, Moneyball, Funny Pages, His Girl Friday, and much, much more!
Matthew Maher is an American film, television and theater actor who has appeared in Bringing Out The Dead, Dogma, Vulgar, The Third Wheel, Jersey Girl, Gone Baby Gone, The Killer Inside Me, I'm Still Here & It's Kind of a Funny Story, Captain Marvel, Funny Pages, and Air.

“I'm aspiring, even at 57 now, to try to be more free.” What's in this episode? What is a multi-hyphenate to Mr. Guirgis? How writing made him respect other writer's writing. Why do people think multi-hyphenates aren't a thing? Scene work with Daphne Rubin-Vega “I can't believe in myself 100%, but if I believe in myself 51% – it's enough to keep going.” Work that isn't as dangerous as it used to be. All right, three new movies as we head into the Labor Day holiday. First, it's George Miller's long-awaited follow-up to "Fury Road," the fantasy "Three Thousand Years of Longing," with Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba. Then it's the Owen Kline cartoonist "coming of age" comedy "Funny Pages." Also, Sylvester Stallone has an Amazon Prime comic book movie called "Samaritan." So there's that. Timestamps: 8:17 "Three Thousand Years of Longing" 34:22 "Funny Pages" 52:27 "Samaritan" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful, for the music. We hope you enjoy.
