Built on simple rules, Tetris established itself as one of the greatest video games ever made. By December 2011, it had sold 202 million copies—approximately 70 million physical units and 132 million paid mobile game downloads—making it one of the best-selling video game franchises. The Game Boy version is one of the best-selling games of all time, with more than 35 million copies sold. Tetris is available on over 65 platforms, setting a Guinness world record for the most ported video game. Tetris is rooted within popular culture and its popularity extends beyond the sphere of video games; imagery from the game has influenced architecture, music, and cosplay. The game also has been the subject of various research studies that have analyzed its theoretical complexity and have shown its effect on the human brain following a session, in particular the Tetris effect.

Alexey Pajitnov was supposed to build voice recognition software for the Russian government. Instead he built a video game and gave it away. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not so secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients so here's one of those. [BWS Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, Dave Young, here alongside Stephen Semple. And Stephen just whispered in my ear that our empire today that we're going to talk about is Tetris, or as I like to call it, instant anxiety. Stephen Semple: So you're familiar with the game. Dave Young: I've played a few times, and man, does it give me anxiety. Stephen Semple: Really, Dave. Dave Young: It's just like, oh, it's just like, oh, the pressure, and it's building and it's building and it's like that's just the way my life is, and I don't need a game to remind me. Stephen Semple: You may feel differently about it after you hear the story, because it's a kind of cool story. Dave Young: I have a distant hunch of a memory in my mind that it has something to do with Russia. Stephen Semple: It does. Well done. The story starts behind the Iron Curtain. Dave Young: Yeah. Soviet Russia. Stephen Semple: Russia, yeah. But to give an idea of how big Tetris is, to date it's estimated that there has been 500 million copies sold. Dave Young: 500 million copies sold. I wonder how many billions of games of Tetris have been played. Stephen Semple: Oh God, you'd only have to each game- Dave Young: Trillions. Stephen Semple: Yeah, well, exactly. Because you think about, with 500 million copies out there, if everybody just played it twice, there you're at a billion. Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: You get there really quickly. Like your two games, Dave, that'll put you there. Dave Young: Yeah. Yeah. Stephen Semple: So where it starts is we got to go back to 1984, and we have to remember what it was like in '84. It was the Cold War. Dave Young: Oh my gosh. Stephen Semple: And communism was a real thing. It's easy to forget that at that time in the Soviet Union, all production was owned and controlled by the state, and the economy was completely centrally planned. It's hard to remember what that was like and the government made all decisions about what to make, how much to make, what price to sell goods and services at. Dave Young: Yeah, and from a geopolitical point of view, we were in the middle of the Cold War and Star Wars, Ronald Reagan's hand tie ballistic missile, we were going to spend a gazillion dollars to- Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: Yeah. It was crazy times. Stephen Semple: And the wall was a real thing that if you climbed over- Dave Young: It was still there- Stephen Semple: You got shot. It's almost hard to believe and private property was not allowed, and all citizens were expected to work for the quote, unquote common good. Dave Young: And Vladimir Putin was a young guy working his way up in the KGB. Stephen Semple: Yeah. There you go. Yeah. We almost need to remember that just to understand how remarkable this story is, because here's this guy, Alexey Pajitnov, who's working at the Moscow Academy of Science, which of course is state run, and he's a computer genius, and he's working on an early form of voice recognition technology. Dave Young: Oh, okay. Stephen Semple: Yeah, and the KGB learns about this, and they're really interested because they want to use this for wire taps. Dave Young:

Tetris is one of the most popular video games of all time, and Henk Rogers helped make it happen. He first discovered the game at a convention in 1988, and immediately saw how elegant and addictive it was. As a software developer based in Japan, Henk set out to obtain selected publishing rights, but waded into a tangle of red tape that stretched from Japan to the U.S. to the Soviet Union. He eventually ventured behind the Iron Curtain to bluster his way into the obscure government office that managed Tetris. While in Moscow, Henk also met the game's inventor, Alexey Pajitnov, and the two of them hit it off. After much legal wrangling across many time zones, Henk and Alexey won the worldwide rights to the game; and today, Tetris has sold over 500 million copies. This episode was produced by Sam Paulson, with music by Ramtin Arablouei and Sam Paulson.Edited by Neva Grant, with research help from Katherine Sypher. You can follow HIBT on Twitter & Instagram, and email us at hibt@id.wondery.com.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On this edition of the Richard Crouse Show we'll meet Noah Pink, screenwriter of a new movie called “Tetris,” starring Taron Egerton, and now playing on Apple TV+, that tells the story of how Dutch video game designer Henk Rogers fit the differently shaped pieces of international intrigue and video game creation together to secure the intellectual property rights to popular game. It's a story of international intrigue, the Cold War and of the deep friendship that grew between entrepreneur Henk Rogers and the game's Russian creator Alexey Pajitnov. Then, Gregory Sestero, star of the found footage film “Infrared.” In the film he plays the creepy caretaker of an abandoned schoolhouse. If Greg's name rings a bell, it's likely because you've attended one of the midnight madness screenings of “The Room,” a movie so deliciously awful, it has become a cult favorite since its release in 2003. Gregory turned the experience of making the so-bad-it's-a-hoot movie into a book, which eventually went on to become the Oscar nominated movie “The Disaster Artist,” starring James Franco and Seth Rogen. We talk about “Infrared” and whether or not, twenty years on, if “The Room” is an embarrassment or a source of pride. Finally, we go to the vault to hear a vintage interview I did with Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman. We don't talk superheroes, instead, the actor gets personal, talking about the projects that worked, the ones that didn't and what drives him.

The best ones are inspirational even to those who couldn't be less interested in whatever the headline sport is, a testament to the universal appeal that “games” can hold As the world of cinema continues to embrace the stories of videogames more and more, Hollywood is quickly learning they're more than just speeding hedgehogs and magic mushrooms; we've got a Tetris movie on the way, though its about how the game was sold and not Alexey Pajitnov's game itself.

On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we take a look at one of the more bizarre stories in video games—The Tale of Tetris. It is a story of mass piracy, Soviet Secrecy, and murder! Everyone knows this brick stacking game, and most of us have been addicted to it at some point or another. But the story of its spread and development is wild. It was created by Alexey Pajitnov for a group run by the Soviet Union. A colleague named Vladimir Pokhilko first recognized its addictive quality and was brought in. After most of the world was playing it (illegally), Pajitnoz and Pokhilko used its success to move to the US and work on new software, but Pohkilko and his family died to hammer assaults and knife attacks. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview New York Times Best Selling Author Box Brown. Miami Book Nov 13-20th. Box Brown is an Ignatz Award-winning American cartoonist whose first work was the online comic Bellen!. He was the winner of a 2011 Xeric Grant for the comic Love is a Peculiar Type of Thing. It is, perhaps, the perfect video game. Simple yet addictive, Tetris delivers an irresistible, unending puzzle that has players hooked. Play it long enough and you'll see those brightly colored geometric shapes everywhere. You'll see them in your dreams. Alexey Pajitnov had big ideas about games. In 1984, he created Tetris in his spare time while developing software for the Soviet government. Once Tetris emerged from behind the Iron Curtain, it was an instant hit. Nintendo, Atari, Sega—game developers big and small all wanted Tetris. A bidding war was sparked, followed by clandestine trips to Moscow, backroom deals, innumerable miscommunications, and outright theft.  New York Times–bestselling author Box Brown untangles this complex history and delves deep into the role games play in art, culture, and commerce. For the first time and in unparalleled detail, Tetris: The Games People Play tells the true story of the world's most popular video game.
