The Child Gaze: Narrating Resistance in American Literature (UP of Mississippi, 2024) theorizes the child gaze as a narrative strategy for social critique in twentieth- and twenty-first-century US literature for children and adults. Through a range of texts, including James Baldwin's Little Man, Little Man, Mildred D. Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye, Gene Luen Yang's American Born Chinese, and more, Amanda M. Greenwell focuses on children and their literal acts of looking. Detailing how these acts of looking direct the reader, she posits that the sightlines of children serve as signals to renegotiate hegemonic ideologies of race, ethnicity, creed, class, and gender. In her analysis, Greenwell shows how acts of looking constitute a flexible and effective narrative strategy, capable of operating across multiple points of view, focalizations, audiences, and forms. Weaving together scholarship on the US child, visual culture studies, narrative theory, and other critical traditions, The Child Gaze explores the ways in which child acts of looking compel readers to look at and with a child character, whose gaze encourages critiques of privileged visions of national identity. Chapters investigate how child acts of looking allow texts to redraw circles of inclusion around the locus of the child gaze and mobilize childhood as a site of resistance. The powerful child gaze can thus disrupt dominant scripts of power, widening the lens through which belonging in the US can be understood. Learn more about your ad choices. The show follows high schooler Jin Wong (Ben Wang) as he begins the 10th grade. While trying to balance the normal work and home difficulties of everyday life, he is asked to help a new student get acquainted with the school, Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu). Wei-Chen is actually the son of the Great Sage Sun Wukong (Daniel Wu), who rules over heaven. Wei-Chen, having stolen his father's mystical staff, is on a quest to seek the mysterious 4th Scroll, an artifact of legend which contains unknown power. Guided by the goddess of Mercy (Michelle Yeoh), Wei-Chen believes that Jin is his guide to finding the scroll which will help to thwart an uprising in heaven spearheaded by the Bull Demon King (Leonard Wu). Through various incidents and scrapes, the staff is lost by Wei-Chen and ends in the hands of the Bull Demon who is intent on using it, along with the 4th scroll to end the world as we know it. Together with his friends Jin is able to lure the shape-shifting Bull Demon out of hiding during a soccer match, resulting in Jin jumping in the way of the blast what would end the earth. Miraculously unharmed, Jin is revealed to be the 4th scroll himself and the gods return to heaven. Returning home from the soccere game, Jin's parents are missing and in his home a mysterious woman says that if he wants to see his parents unharmed again that he must go with her.

Welcome to Season 4, Episode 21! It's time for the 2024 STAATUS Index published by The Asian American Foundation (TAAF) with partnership from Leading Asian Americans to Unite for Change (LAAUNCH), AAPI Data, and the Asian American Research Initiative. This annual survey is a social tracking and national assessment of attitudes and stereotypes towards Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. In this episode, we review the report and provide an overview of it. We also dig into each of the sections and reflect on responses. As always, we highly recommend that you download the STAATUS Index and read it yourself. It's very well written with easily accessible information, so don't be afraid that it's data-rich. In our recurring segment we ask “What's Going On?” as we reflect on the sheer number of Asian Pacific-led TV shows that have been canceled in the last year or so. It's hard to wrap our heads around the fact that the last year has seen cancellations of The Afterparty, Kung Fu, Doogie Kamealoha M.D., NCIS: Hawaiʻi, Young Rock, Quantum Leap, American Born Chinese, The Brothers Sun, Warrior, and Our Flag Means Death. We look at ratings, viewership, and ultimately ask, “What's Going On?” If you like what we do, please share, follow, and like us in your podcast directory of choice or on Instagram @AAHistory101. Author's Note: This podcast was recorded after Universal Music Group (UMG) removed its entire catalog from TikTok. Also, the song, “One More Song (demo)” was featured in the film ROCKBOTTOM, which is now on Prime Video NOT Netflix. It is a pleasure to welcome pop/R&B band ICYDAY to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast.ICYDAY is made up of Sloane Morgan Siegel, David Bloom, and guitarist-pianist Isaac Cohen. Sloane portrayed the titular characters in Dwight in Shining Armor and Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street and appeared in Chartered, Game Shakers, The Goldbergs, and NCIS. Sloane voiced Robin (Tim Drake) in the Gotham Knights video game. David portrayed Kevin in Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, Stanley Zielinski in Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street, Josh in American Born Chinese, and Teenage Al in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. He also appeared in CSI: NY, Modern Family, The Goldbergs, and Arrow. Sloane and David first met on the set of The Goldbergs years ago and have known each other since they were 13. Sloane and David teamed up with Isaac to pursue this musical passion project.   On January 26, the trio released their debut single, “Open Up” was released. The catchy, laidback single demonstrates the group's serious musical talent for crafting melody, blending elements of jazz, pop, indie, and funk into a commercial sound you can envision in the background of a film or your favorite coffee shop. “Open Shop” is an honest song about wanting to know somebody better, the ebbs and flows of a relationship, with tasteful R&B electric guitar and neo-soul sound. ICYDAY dropped their second single, a heartbreak love song called “Love Isn't Fair,” on February 15, followed by their third song, “One More Song,” on March 8.   In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, ICYDAY shared their origin story, the stories behind their songs, and their take on using TikTok to build their fanbase.  Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.

Last month, my 14-year-old son came home from school with a book in hand and excitedly said, “Dad, you've got to read this book!My son has never said anything like this to me before, and I was immediately intrigued. I picked up the book, a graphic novel, and it took me in immediately. It was engrossing and profound. It was at times hilarious and at other times utterly heartbreaking. Overall, it was a superbly relatable human story that describes a period in the life of an American-born Chinese boy that was true to his experience and that, simultaneously, opens a door to a Chinese mythical world. The author is Gene Luen Yang (https://geneyang.com/), and I was thrilled to learn that his New York Times bestselling, award winning, and critically acclaimed book, American Born Chinese, has been made into an eight-part miniseries on Disney. The miniseries has an all-star lineup the likes of which blows my mind! The cast includes Academy Award Winners Michelle Yeoh and and Ke Huy Quan (also known as Jonathan Ke Quan) and two of my favorite comedians, Ronnie Chieng and Jimmy O Yang! And throughout this interview, you'll get to learn from Gene who is a cool, kind, and deep-thinking person. I am confident you will appreciate him as much as I have. So, I am releasing this episode to coincide with Chinese New Year. A hearty Gung Hay Fat Choy to all who celebrate! And what a great way to celebrate the Year of the Dragon by listening to Gene share his story and the story behind the story of American Born Chinese. It's not up for debate. American Born Chinese, now streaming on Disney+, is 2023's best comic book adaptation. The streaming series miraculously transforms Gene Luen Yang's iconic graphic novel into something unique without betraying the book's characters or core emotions. You can experience both separately from each other or in conversation with each other; they're doing their own thing. On this week's episode, Gene Luen Yang joins the show to discuss the adaptation process and how it somewhat represents how he would tackle the material today in sequential form. When he looks back at the cartoonist who produced the comics in 2006, does he recognize him? The answer may surprise you. We chat about a few significant changes made to the narrative and why they were necessary. We discuss the impact stories have on our lives, and Yang details the specific tales that influenced his creative imagination. A few CBCC favorites delightfully appear. The American Born Chinese adaptation consumed Gene Luen Yang's attention, distracting him from his many deadlines. He's cooking up a lot of comics at the moment, and he's eager to put new stories out into the universe. We run through a few and predict a couple of our own comic book desires. You can watch American Born Chinese on Disney+ now and purchase the original graphic novel, published by First Second Books, from your local comic book shop.  Be sure to follow Gene Luen Yang on his website, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.  Other Relevant Links: Our Stan Sakai Conversation Our Mark Waid Lazarus Planet Conversation Our Mark & Eve Counseling Sessions FINAL ROUND OF PLUGS (PHEW): Also, JOIN OUR PATREON before we wrap up our 75-episode series on Sandman's first 75 issues. “This is an intensely personal book. As much as there is a sort of universality, it's Yang's own personal journey growing up.” American Born Chinese is Gene Luen Yang's seminal comics work first released in 2006 — and comes out as a live-action Disney+ streaming series on May 24, 2023 - by the filmmakers from “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Shang Chi” - Michelle Yeoh and many others. The original graphic novel won all the awards, and launched Yang onto a full blown comics career. For AAPI Heritage month, we're sharing this Quarantined Comics companion episode on amazing graphic novels - following the earlier Modern Minorities author conversation. The story of American Born Chinese consists of three seemingly disparate tales: (1) the legend of the Monkey King from the classic 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West, (2) an all-too-familiar Asian American coming of age story of a American Born Chinese teenager Jin Wang, and (3) a TV sitcom starring an all-American cast of cringe-worthy stereotypes. Eventually these three tales become come together into a poignant lesson of culture and self acceptance. Raman and Ryan talks not just about the work - and their anxiety about the new TV show (which they have not yet seen) - but also their OWN American-Born Asian experiences - and a reflection on the impact of Gene Luen Yang's many works that we've covered on Quarantined Comics LEARN ABOUT AMERICAN BORN CHINESE / GENE LUEN YANG American Born Chinese: goodreads.com/book/show/118944.American_Born_Chinese geneyang.com twitter.com/geneluenyang MENTIONS Superman Smashes the Klan TRAILER: youtu.be/LQ5ID_k_iBA Dragon Hoops: goodreads.com/book/show/44280830-dragon-hoops Boxers & Saints: goodreads.com/series/108966-boxers-saints Learn more about your ad choices.
