Phantom Troublemaker, Ryan Schweck, R.T. Ewell, and Mr. Beau Brown share memories of the entertainment powerhouse that was Nickelodeon in the 1980s! Nickelodeon was the first television channel for kids and it has a legacy of irreverent, thought-provoking programming going all the way back to 1980. Shows like Mr. Wizard's World and Standby: Lights, Camera, Action! Sought to educate kids about the world around them while programs like You Can't Do That On Television were more subtle about the messages they presented. The 80s were a very different time in American culture and allowed for much edgier content on a channel aimed at children. Nickelodeon also featured programming expressly aimed at younger kids, as well. From Pinwheel to Today's Special, they set a standard for what the youth of the day expected from their shows. Listen in as the Needless Things Irregulars reminisce about the glorious, gross, golden age of Nickelodeon! Be sure to join the Needless Things Podcast Facebook Group and get in on the conversation for this week’s episode! Let us know what you think! “Procrastibate”by LeSexoflex.com
Join Shawn and Scott as they take a look back at a magical time in the history of Nickelodeon, back in the early 80's when a low budget Canadian sketch show for kids dared to defy convention, prompting many to say its title: "You Can't Do That On Television"! Listen as they break down the episode entitled "Pop Music", which most notably, was the television debut of a young Alanis Morrisette! They'll talk about Alanis' short run on the show, the history of the infamous green slime, and how it ended up becoming intertwined with Nickelodeon's identity as a network, how the longtime kid host, Christine McGlade, pretty much got the job accidentally, and how this show was heavily influenced by Monty Python's Flying Circus and Laugh In. So many sketches, so many that wouldn't be aired today! So relax in your dungeon, avoid saying "I don't know", and enjoy this slice of 80's nostalgia along with us! I heard that! @PTPpodcast stops by the studio to talk a little podcasting this week! Before we even get started, seeing how they're a Canadian based trio, we had to ask them a few questions about the old TV show "You Can't Do That On Television." We quickly learn that though they've heard of it, they are to young to have seen it. Shannon, Justin and Justin all come from a background in radio/broadcasting! They're the real deal. They take us from thier days at a college radio station to their first days of podcasting. From great studio equipment to just a macbook with a built-in-microphone they plug away at their podcast dream like an indie band that could! ...and they do! This group has tons of advice to give and a great sense of humor. *NSFW*** This episode has a few crude jokes. Though I try to keep this show away from the dirty side of humor...sometimes it's just got to happen. If that offends you, just skip this episode and we'll be on our best behavior most of the time....
