In this episode, Mike and Ben break down May as the first full month after the latest Amazon changes and are joined by guest Mike Dancy to talk through what the shift is looking like in real time.Ben shares how May ended up being a volatile month, falling from an early projection of around $12K to closer to $10K, while Mike talks through how he still expects to land around $11K for the month despite dealing with two hospitalizations and serious health issues. A big part of the conversation centers around why higher-quality, more intentional videos are becoming even more important as the program continues to shift.Guest Mike Dancy shares how his Amazon earnings dropped significantly despite having hundreds of videos live, while his UK, Canada, and Australia storefronts improved and his off-site efforts continued to create opportunities. He explains how he is using YouTube and other social platforms to drive traffic, build UGC income, and create new brand relationships outside of relying only on Amazon. The episode also covers UGC pricing, finding clients, niche advantages, tools like Wovo, comparison videos, search-based content, Creator Connections, and why creators need to diversify income beyond Amazon if they want more stability going forward. If you are an Amazon Influencer, content creator, or product reviewer trying to understand the latest changes, grow off-site, and build a more durable creator business, this episode is packed with real-world strategy and perspective.____________________JOIN THE COMMUNITYIf you are looking for deeper strategy, accountability, & honest conversations with other serious content creators, the Creator's Leverage Guild was built for exactly thatLearn more and join here:Creator's Leverage Guild_____________________CHECK OUT OUR 2 NEW EBOOKS THAT JUST LAUNCHED!The AIP Master Guide - Stop guessing your way through AIP. Have you ever looked at a diet protocol and immediately thought, "There is no way I can do that"? That was me with AIP. The restrictions felt overwhelming, the food felt foreign, and honestly, I was not sure the payoff was worth the stress. So when Mickey Trescott reached out about her new book, my first instinct was hesitation. Then I read it. And everything changed. In this bonus episode of Health with Hashimoto's, I'm sharing my honest review of The New Autoimmune Protocol by Mickey Trescott — and why I went from resistant to completely bought in. This is The New Autoimmune Protocol review I wish someone had given me years ago. Here's what you'll hear in this episode: Why AIP felt impossible before and what made it finally feel doable What the New AIP actually is — including the three phases and two flexible approaches that make it more accessible than the original What makes this book stand out, from the practical prep guidance to the gorgeous cookbook section Hit play and find out if this book belongs on your shelf. Full Show Notes: https://bengreenfieldlife.com/newAIP In this episode with Mickey Trescott, you'll hear how she went from bedridden at 26 with Hashimoto's and celiac to overseeing four pilot trials, helping grow a community of 1,000 trained AIP practitioners, and writing the first official update to the Autoimmune Protocol, including a new modified version for people who found the original too restrictive. We cover what a full day of eating on AIP actually looks like, why food sensitivity panels cannot replace elimination and reintroduction, how to use WHOOP to track food reactions, the genetics of autoimmunity, the iodine problem in Hashimoto's, and why three out of four people who follow AIP properly get meaningful clinical improvement. Mickey is a nutrition professional and one of the founding leaders of the Autoimmune Protocol movement. She wrote the original AIP cookbook, which became the definitive guide to the protocol. Her new book, The New Autoimmune Protocol, releasing May 26, 2026, includes detailed meal plans and 70+ recipes across both the core and modified protocols. Pre-order your copy here. Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 5-21-2026: This is the second show featuring Mira Achilles, a UCSC graduate working on her masters in epidemiology. Dr. Dawn and Mira open with a Harvard study showing OpenAI's o1 reasoning model reached correct diagnoses 67% of the time versus 50-55% for physicians, and scored 89% versus 34% on treatment plans. The AI advantage shrinks when doctors get more data and time, suggesting its greatest value is in fast-moving triage. Dr. Dawn cautions that over-reliance on AI during residency could undermine the clinical reasoning neurologic pathways doctors must develop, and emphasizes the "zebra paradox"— rare diseases remain rare even when symptoms match the textbook. Dr. Dawn shares a personal case of a patient with throat shingles, leading her to use a medical AI (OpenEvidence) to investigate Shingrix risks. An Australian study found an elevenfold increase in shingles within 21 days of the first Shingrix dose in adults over 65, though dose two reduced overall risk by 73%. She explains this could be one of several things such as immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS), or that the AS01B vaccine adjuvant's strong activation may transiently reactivate latent virus, and recommends valacyclovir prophylaxis for high-risk patients for their first Shringrex shot.. Mira discusses AI in education, noting the shift from professors threatening plagiarism charges to teaching students how to critique AI output, emphasizing taking summaries "with a grain of salt." Dr. Dawn describes Chinese research scanning 1,154 children that identified a third ADHD subtype—severe emotional dysregulation—showing 45 abnormal brain regions versus 26 in the inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive types, with standard stimulants working poorly for this group. She connects this to traditional psychiatric personality disorder classifications and A discussion of vagus nerve stimulation's emerging applications for autoimmune conditions. Dr. Dawn and Mira discuss menstruation and bodily autonomy, then describe the Somedays period pain simulator that uses electrical impulses to let men experience menstrual cramps, highlighting differing pain thresholds. An emailer references a Radiolab episode about deliberate hookworm infection to treat asthma and allergies. Dr. Dawn explains parasites release immunosuppressants to survive, including anti-inflammatory protein-2 (AIP) now in drug development, which stimulates T-regulatory cells and IL-10 while "alarmins" inhibit lung inflammation—though this increases vulnerability to new infections. A caller with H. pylori and frequent viral infections asks whether S. boulardii and reuteri probiotics are safe given her low immunity. Dr. Dawn explains immunosuppression warnings target transplant-level drug suppression, not a tendency toward viruses like hers. Dr. Dawn thinks that her near-zero natural killer cells explain frequent infections, and suggests that the H. pylori test given her absence of symptoms, may be an incidental bystander rather than the cause of her low ferritin, which suggests bleeding. In medical news of the weird, Dr. Dawn describes Baby Cassian, diagnosed in utero with congenital high airway obstruction syndrome (CHAOS), who was partially removed from the womb at 25 weeks for airway surgery, returned, and born again at 31 weeks—leading to a discussion of microsurgery and how specialties partition by the physical scale of the surgery rather the location or type of structure.

Send us Fan MailIn this week's episode of The Autoimmune RESET, I'm joined by Mickey Trescott, one of the leading voices behind the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP), to discuss the evolution of AIP, the science behind it, and why the new version is far more flexible, sustainable, and nuanced than many people realise. We explore Mickey's own personal journey with autoimmune disease, how she used nutrition and lifestyle changes to support her recovery, and the research that has emerged around AIP over the last decade. We also discuss why so many people with autoimmune conditions react differently to foods, how reintroductions should actually work, and the importance of avoiding fear-based or perfectionist approaches to healing. One of the things I particularly appreciated in this conversation is the focus on nutrient density rather than restriction alone. Mickey explains why many “healthy” diets can still leave people depleted nutritionally, and how the updated AIP framework aims to support people in a much more realistic and individualised way.We also talk about: The difference between core AIP and modified AIP Why food reactions are not always immediate The role of gut health and immune regulation Practical first steps for implementing AIP without overwhelm Why some people struggle with overly restrictive wellness messaging The importance of reintroductions and long-term sustainability Common mistakes people make when trying elimination diets How to approach autoimmune healing without perfectionism Whether you are completely new to AIP or have tried it before, this episode offers a much more balanced and evidence-aware perspective on how food can support autoimmune health.Resources & LinksThe New Autoimmune Protocol: The Complete Guide to Managing Autoimmune Disease Follow Mickey Trescott for more on AIP and autoimmune health: https://www.instagram.com/mickeytrescott/
“What if your body isn't failing you… but asking for a different kind of support?” In this episode, Dr. Mariza sits down with Mickey Trescott to unpack the powerful connection between inflammation, autoimmune disease, gut health, and perimenopause. Together, they explore why so many women are dismissed when labs look “normal” despite debilitating symptoms like fatigue, bloating, brain fog, joint pain, skin issues, and weight resistance. Mickey shares her personal journey with Hashimoto's, celiac disease, and autoimmune recovery—and how the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) became a transformative tool for reducing inflammation and helping millions feel better in their bodies. They also dive into the evolution of AIP over the last 15 years, the newest research validating its effectiveness, and why perimenopause often becomes an inflammatory inflection point where hidden symptoms suddenly rise to the surface. If you've been struggling with chronic inflammation, unexplained symptoms, or feeling dismissed by conventional medicine, this conversation will help you connect the dots—and give you practical hope moving forward. MICKEY TRESCOTT Mickey Trescott is a nutritional therapy practitioner, cookbook author, and co-creator of the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP). After being diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and celiac disease in her twenties, she dedicated her work to helping people navigate autoimmune disease through nutrition, lifestyle medicine, and inflammation support. She has helped shape the modern AIP movement and trained hundreds of healthcare practitioners around the world. IN THIS EPISODE Why autoimmune disease impacts women at significantly higher rates How inflammation often worsens during perimenopause and menopause The connection between gut health, food sensitivities, and immune regulation Why “normal labs” don't always reflect how women actually feel The science and research behind the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) The difference between Core AIP and the newer Modified AIP approach Why food reintroductions and personalization are key for long-term healing QUOTES“Your body is not working against you. It's asking for a different level of support.” “Three out of every four-ish people get clinical improvement from doing an elimination diet when you have autoimmune disease.” “When hormones begin to shift, the body becomes far less tolerant of underlying inflammation.” RESOURCES MENTIONED Order my new book: The Perimenopause Revolution https://peri-revolution.com/ Use code ENERGIZED and get 30% off on your first BATCH order http://hellobatch.com/ENERGIZED Grab Mickey's new AIP book https://theautoimmuneprotocol.com/ Visit Autoimmune Wellness Website Autoimmune Wellness Instagram Mickey Trescott Instagram Mickey Trescott Facebook Mickey Trescott Youtube RELATED EPISODES 747: The Silent Shift: Why Perimenopause Changes Everything 717: “I Don't Feel Like Myself Anymore”: The Mental & Emotional Reality of Perimenopause 741: Estrogen, Gut Health, and Metabolism with Siobhan Mitchell 728: Why Brain Fog Isn't Random: The Hormone Shift Behind It

Have you ever wondered if what you eat is making your Hashimoto's worse — or if changing your diet could actually make a real difference? If you've heard of the AIP diet but felt overwhelmed, confused about where to start, or worried it meant giving up food you love forever, this episode is for you. The modified AIP diet Hashimoto's patients are using today looks very different from what it was 15 years ago — and the research behind it is finally catching up. In this episode, Esther sits down with Mickey Trescott, functional nutrition expert, Hashimoto's patient, and author of the brand new book The New Autoimmune Protocol. Mickey shares how AIP has evolved from a single sentence in functional medicine circles into a research-backed, two-phase protocol with human studies to support it — including two studies specific to Hashimoto's. In this episode, you'll learn: Why AIP is a tool and a process, not a permanent diet — and what it's actually designed to do What modified AIP is, how it differs from core AIP, and why it may be more realistic for your real life Why preparation matters more than the diet itself, and the two exercises Mickey uses to set people up for success before they change a single thing they eat Hit play and find out if the modified AIP diet might be the missing piece in your Hashimoto's strategy. In this episode, Mike and Ben break down their April earnings after the recent Amazon commission rate drops and talk through what the numbers are showing now that the dust is starting to settle. They share a full look at how April came together across Amazon onsite, Creator Connections, off-site traffic, international earnings, bonuses, YouTube income, and other revenue streams. The conversation highlights just how much the recent onsite cuts have changed the landscape and why Creator Connections and off-site growth are becoming more important than ever.Mike and Ben also talk through what creators should be focusing on during slower months, including auditing videos and campaigns, leaning harder into long-duration Creator Connections opportunities, doing deeper product research, and preparing early for seasonal shifts like Prime Day and Q4. They discuss the importance of comparison videos, category expansion, and building more durable revenue streams across YouTube and other off-site platforms.A major theme in this episode is adaptation. Rather than relying too heavily on one source of income, Mike and Ben explain why creators need to think more strategically about diversification, reinvesting profits, and using slower periods to strengthen the foundation of their business. If you are an Amazon Influencer, content creator, or product reviewer trying to navigate lower onsite commissions and figure out what still works, this episode is a real-world breakdown of the numbers, the pivot, and the next move.____________________JOIN THE COMMUNITYIf you are looking for deeper strategy, accountability, & honest conversations with other serious content creators, the Creator's Leverage Guild was built for exactly thatLearn more and join here:Creator's Leverage Guild_____________________CHECK OUT OUR 2 NEW EBOOKS THAT JUST LAUNCHED!The AIP Master Guide - Stop guessing your way through AIP. A version of this essay has been published by rediff.com at https://www.rediff.com/news/column/gulf-war-crisis-why-india-will-take-a-huge-hit/20260511.htmIn the heat and dust of elections, many of us have forgotten that there is a war going on. But the PM's warning about sacrifices and conservation reminds us that this essentially unwinnable war, and the on-again, off-again negotiations to bring it to a closure, are going to hit every one of us in our wallets. On 30th April, the Pentagon announced that the US had so far spent $25 billion on the West Asia war. This is a staggeringly huge number, and I was startled because I had casually thrown around this number as the ultimate cost of the war for all parties. Clearly I underestimated the damage, if this is the US' cost alone. Add the other frontline states, and then the untold misery and cost imposed on all of us innocent bystanders. And it's not over yet by any means.Pete Hegseth, the US secretary of war (self-fulfilling prophecy, isn't it, they changed the name from secretary of defense, and lo! they went to war immediately thereafter) bristled at the idea of a quagmire, according to The Economist. But I am old enough to remember Vietnam, and then Afghanistan. These forever wars are easy to get into, but hard to get out of.Indeed, the war has become not only an impasse, but also a charade. Even considering how the narrative gets bizarre from all sides during every war, this one seems especially messed up. So much so that there literally is no point in paying attention to the day-to-day events, because they don't seem to make much difference. Except of course, when the price of Brent crude hits $120, as it did on April 30th, twice what it was before the war. Ouch! And Hormuz is still closed.India is reeling under a heatwave, and we live under the Damocles' sword of power cuts. Kerala announced a half hour of rolling cuts (anodyne euphemism: “load shedding”) every night, but they will not tell you when or where the cuts will be. This is like the Malayalam proverb: “the guy who got hit by lightning was then bitten by a snake”. Incidentally, there's been a number of deaths from snakebites in Kerala as the reptiles enter houses seeking cooler temperatures. If this El Nino weather holds up, India's assumptions about load (maximum 270 GW) will be challenged: we hit a record on April 25th of 256 GW peak demand, and the fact that the grid didn't collapse is admirable, but being so close to the maximum is worrying. In Kerala, the grid cannot absorb the solar electricity produced by many households during the day because the Electricity Board did not purchase enough storage batteries: so much for on-grid.I am also fairly confident that once the elections are over, the government will be forced to increase fuel prices. Petrol has held steady at pump prices of Rs. 107.45/liter for a few years, but as crude oil prices have doubled, I see an inevitable rise not of Rs. 28 or so as speculated, but Rs. 50-100 based on how much inflation the Reserve Bank is willing to tolerate. In passing, I remember seeing somewhere that petrol prices have reached Pak Rs. 500/liter in that country. Therefore I have stopped paying much attention to the daily press releases and JUST IN, BREAKING NEWS types of ‘analysis' (some of the most prominent of these are clear AI slop, possibly manufactured by Chinese troll farms). The big picture is that the Straits of Hormuz remain blocked, the amount of oil and gas coming from the Persian Gulf remains diminished dramatically, and recovery may take months, if not years, even if the strait is unblocked. The chances are increasing that this will become a protracted war, as the principals are standing by their maximalist positions, where this is little reason to believe they will be able to arrive at a via media and a lasting ceasefire. It is not business as usual. This is the biggest energy shock since 1973, and as always, it is developing countries that will be most seriously affected. India is going to take a large hit, with inflation rising by, say, 2%, and GDP growth falling from 7+% to 6%.There are several things India needs to do urgently:* Strive for self-reliance (“Atmanirbhar”) in a variety of areas* Diversify its sources of hydrocarbons to other geographies eg. Africa, South America, Central Asia (through Chabahar), and accelerate exploration of its own (offshore and onshore) blocks as Mumbai High and Assam fields are aging rapidly* Pursue other forms of energy:* Renewables* Coal, including carbon sequestration* Biofuels* Nuclear (both SMR and FBR)* Shift households from LPG to LNG, including tapping Krishna Godavari wells, coal gasification, biomassEspecially at a time when electricity demand for new industries (eg. generativeAI data centers, semiconductors) is ramping up, it is important for India's manufacturing rise to ensure that this does not become a constraint. From a consumer perspective, increased affluence brings increased electricity demand. In addition, the Indian migrant worker population of about 10 million in West Asia, and their inward remittances of some $40-$50 billion per annum (total of $120 billion globally) may be increasingly under pressure if oil/gas production does not go back to pre-war levels. There is one more factor: India needs military muscle. As I said about Pax Indica, the Indian Ocean needs a strong, impartial facilitator of trade in the Hormuz to Malacca sea-lanes, and India is best placed to do this, harking back to Rajendra Chola re-opening Malacca in 1025 CE. But this requires three things:* Major container ports: Trivandrum (Vizhinjam), Vadhavan, Great Nicobar (Galathea Bay)* The ‘switch' to ease multiparty, multi-protocol trade: the India Stack* Security: three aircraft carrier groups, two dozen SSBNs, SSNs, AIP diesel submarinesThis is the time for India to plan forward fully, with the goal of Atmanirbharata, and energy security. The Persian Gulf is no longer a reliable source. The war is indeed a quagmire.950 words This is a public episode.
The latest episode of Physics World Stories dives into a remarkable archival release. A series of audio interviews with Robert Oppenheimer, recorded in the 1960s, is now accessible through the American Institute of Physics (AIP). Made available for non-commercial use in collaboration with the Oppenheimer family, these recordings offer a rare chance to hear the physicist's voice and experience his unfiltered thoughts. AIP digital archivist Allison Buser guides listeners through the significance of the collection, interspersed with clips. The first interview (1960) captures Oppenheimer reflecting on the lead-up to and aftermath of the Trinity test. A 1963 oral history with science historian Thomas S Kuhn shifts focus to Oppenheimer's personal journey and his views on quantum and nuclear physics. The final interview (1966), sees him discussing Enrico Fermi's legacy and the physics community of his era. Hosted by Andrew Glester, this episode provides a rare glimpse into one of the most consequential scientists of the 20th century. You can find links to the full archive material in the AIP newsletter, along with further context in this article by Allison Buser. You can also hear an interview with Kai Bird, co-author of American Prometheus, the book that inspired the 2023 blockbuster film Oppenheimer.

A version of this essay was published by firstpost.com at https://www.firstpost.com/opinion/shadow-warrior-the-need-for-pax-indica-malacca-was-blocked-1001-years-ago-hormuz-is-choked-now-14005673.htmlIn 1025 CE, exactly 1,001 years ago, Emperor Rajendra Chola sent an armada (probably the largest fleet in history before the advent of steam) 4,000 kilometers clear across the Indian Ocean. It was on a mission strangely familiar to us in 2026: open up a critical strait that was being choked by a littoral state. The thalassocratic SriVijaya Empire of Sumatra was closing the strait and imposing tolls, as well as winking at a little piracy. The strait in question then was Malacca. The Chola goal: to reopen Indian trade with Southeast Asia and China. Remarkably, the Cholas were not interested in territorial conquest, only in freedom of navigation. It is ironic that today, it is again a question of free trade, that shibboleth that has been waved about for decades (although that was a euphemism for ‘managed trade that benefits the West').The difference between then and now? The salient fact is that Rajendra Chola was able to open Malacca with his wooden ships. With all his aircraft carriers and F-35s and missiles, President Trump is unable to open Hormuz. This must mean something, although reasonable people may differ on what that is. My claim is that it means India has the opportunity, in fact the need, to step into the breach.Maritime trade is severely disturbed today, and it is increasingly a disaster for innocent bystanders bereft of oil and gas. And it is increasingly the Indian Ocean that matters: specifically the sea-lanes from Hormuz to Malacca, which handle a significant portion of both oil/gas trade and goods trade globally.Geo-politics and geo-economics, Mahan's and Spykman's theoriesIt is a reasonable conjecture that the locus of power has shifted over the centuries: in the 19th century, the Atlantic was supreme; in the 20th century, the Pacific; and in the 21st century, the most important ocean is the Indian Ocean. Asia has returned to center stage. In support of this assertion, see how the economic center of gravity of the world has returned to the vicinity of India, after the European colonial interlude. It is therefore appropriate to ask what it would take for India to regain its former keystone role in the Indian Ocean. Of course geography offers it to the country on a platter. From both Alfred Thayer Mahan's theory of naval power, and from Nicholas Spykman's Rimland theory, India could be, or should be, the dominant power in the region: it is almost literally India's ocean.Mahan's ideas, updated for today, suggest that a strong navy should protect a large merchant marine fleet, manage trade, and control choke-points. The preferred hardware may have changed from battleships to aircraft carriers and especially nuclear submarines these days, but the basic idea remains: speak softly but carry a big stick with a force-projection navy.Spykman's Rimland theory seems more appropriate in current circumstances than the Heartland theory popularized by Halford MacKinder. The Eurasian land mass may well be subject to control by a coastal hegemon or an alliance that controls the sea lanes and choke points. Despite pipelines and rail-borne containers, maritime trade still dominates.Spice Route >> Silk RoadA stark reminder of this is the comparison between the fabled ‘Silk Road' and the ancient ‘Spice Route'. Despite all the breathless propaganda about the Silk Road, it is abundantly clear that sea-borne trade was an order of magnitude greater, because a caravan of 500 camels, braving deserts, bandits and so on across central Asia couldn't possibly carry more than 100 tons of goods; whereas an ocean-going stitched teak ship, like a single uru from Beypore, Kerala, could easily carry 400 tons. And the monsoon winds provided predictable, seasonal propulsion.India's prowess was built on the monsoons. By mastering the seasonal winds, Indian mariners turned the ocean into a highway. This made India the supreme trading power. Merchants from Rome and Egypt traded with Chinese and Southeast Asian counterparts on the Malabar and Coromandel coasts, leaving behind troves of coins as evidence. The SwitchThe remarkable thing is that these merchants did not even need to meet each other physically, because India provided the “multi-protocol switch”: translating their diverse needs and offering the conveniences of an entrepot, while also itself producing coveted, high-value products such as black pepper. For example, a Greek buyer could buy something from a Chinese seller, and settle the transaction using Indian credit. And how did India do it? By providing the “switching fabric”, such as the ports, the credit systems, and the security, that allowed these disparate worlds to exchange products and wealth without ever meeting. This is much like what a network gateway such as TIBCO does for packets of different kinds of data (in passing, how appropriate that TIBCO was founded by an Indian-American, Vivek Ranadive!). Hardware switches, eg. from Cisco Systems, have been around for a while, but TIBCO abstracted that functionality in software to connect those with different protocols.India already has many of the ingredients of the switching fabric in the India Stack. Using protocols like UPI, e-KYC, Account Aggregation, Central Bank Digital Currency, and ONDC, especially along with distributed-ledger blockchain-based Smart Contracts, it should be possible to provide end-to-end transparent and reliable multi-party trade support which complements the SWIFT payment system. Complement, not necessarily replace. The same pattern held with India's age-old trade system. The ports were on the Malabar Coast, such as Muziris; on the Coromandel coast, such as Arikkamedu; and on the Konkan Coast, such as Bharuchcha. The credit systems were run by temples which acted as both bankers and venture capitalists for the trading guilds. The security: well, that's what Rajendra Chola demonstrated in 1025 CE.Alas, medieval India lost its maritime focus. So did China. Both became insular, and were overwhelmed by invaders, including Turkics and Europeans. In India's case, the Turkic invaders were land-focused powers, although there were isolated maritime attempts (e.g. the Maratha Navy, Travancore defeating the Dutch in an amphibious battle at Colachel in 1741, etc.)Now, however, there are new ports. The most interesting is the Port of Trivandrum (Vizhinjam). This deep-water container transhipment port is only 10 nautical miles away from the Hormuz-Malacca sea lanes, and now when Dubai is closed, it reportedly has a backlog of a hundred container ships waiting to be berthed. Then there is the upcoming Vadhavan container port in Maharashtra, and the Galathea Bay container port in Great Nicobar, which overlooks the mouth of Malacca.Pax Indica todayThe modern idea of Pax Indica borrows from both perspectives: hard power and a switch. An Internet search brings up the fact that it was my friend Bapa Rao and I who first started talking about it in terms of India being the benevolent hegemon in the Indian Ocean, way back in the 1990s.Later, Shashi Tharoor wrote in his 2011 book Pax Indica that it could be “a peace system based on cooperation, stability, and rule‑based order in Asia and beyond, in which rising India helps shape the rules of the road rather than impose its will through hegemony.” That is, along roughly the same lines as the “multi protocol switch” or entrepot concept.Pax Indica is not an empire; it is an ecosystem. There are three aspects: military power, the full exploration of the multiprotocol switch, and the port-led development policy. Bapa Rao and I will consider these in a future article. Briefly, though, here is what these entail.* Project Power: Use a 3-carrier, 18-24-submarine navy to ensure no single power can close the ocean's gates.* Enable Trade: Use the Digital India Stack to act as the “Multi-Protocol Switch” for a fragmented world, plus super-ports like Vizhinjam (Trivandrum).* Secure the Choke Points: Be ready, like the Cholas, to act decisively when a “Srivijaya-style” blockade threatens the common good.Hard power needs to come through the acquisition of a blue water navy: at least three aircraft carrier groups, one for the Arabian Sea (Hormuz), one for the Bay of Bengal (Malacca), and one in maintenance, refit and upgrades.Even though drones and missiles have rendered them less dominant than in earlier times, carrier groups are still important for air superiority and power projection. But an ever-more critical factor is “area denial” by nuclear attack submarines (SSBN) that can launch second strike nuclear missiles as part of the “triad”, of which India should have at least three to four. In addition, there should be at least a dozen silent AIP-equipped diesel-electrics for securing straits, and at least 6-12 SSN (possibly leased) to enhance blue-water reach.“The IOR must become an Indian lake,” said General Raj Shukla on X. I agree: Not as a territory of conquest, but as a sanctuary of trade, where India sits at the center, as the protocol provider that makes world trade work again, as in millennia past.1500 words, 27 Apr, 2026Here's the notebookLM.google.com AI-generated video about this article: This is a public episode. Roger Corman was born 100 years ago this month so to celebrate his centennial and 420, Greg and Bob pair pot with GAS-S-S-S (1970), Corman's hippy-dippy post-apocalyptic stoner comedy. It's definitely one of Roger's stoniest movies, if not quite his best. A doddering US senator unwittingly releases a bio-weapon that kills everyone over 25. With that premise, Peter Fonda, Bruce Dern and Dennis Hopper had aged out so we get Bud Cort (RIP), Cindy Williams, Ben Vereen (who is on fire in this), and Talia Shire (then billed as Tally Coppola). They're like the Muppet Babies of AIP druggie flicks. With dirty psychedelic rock by Country Joe (RIP) and the Fish--the second film on this podcast to feature them and their music. Barry "The Fish" Melton kicks ass. Bob also talks about seeing the 4K restoration of Micheal Mann's THEIF (1981) at the Roxie in SF with the sound cranked way up. It's a good thing. And Greg gives us an update on his record room + why do people watch podcasts with aging men sitting around in shorts? What's the appeal? Hell if we know. Hosts: Greg Franklin and Bob Calhoun. Philena Franklin and Cory Sklar are on assignment. In this episode, Mike & Ben break down Amazon's major onsite rate cuts and talk through what creators should really be focusing on next. With most categories dropping around 1% and some products now paying under 1%, this is one of the biggest changes the Amazon Influencer Program has seen in years. Mike and Ben explain what this means for onsite-only creators, why Creator Connections and offsite income matter more than ever, and why this may be the moment many influencers need to start thinking more like full content creators. The conversation covers how Creator Connections can help offset lower onsite commissions, why products with active campaigns are becoming more important, and why YouTube is looking like one of the strongest long-term plays moving forward. They also talk through other offsite options like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, blogging, UGC, and brand deals, while emphasizing the importance of building a more durable business beyond Amazon onsite alone.Mike and Ben also share practical ways to adapt, including doing deeper product research, creating more strategic comparison and top-10 style content, planning ahead for seasonality, and getting more value out of every product by making multiple pieces of content before reselling or moving on.If you are in the Amazon Influencer Program and trying to figure out how to respond to the new rate cuts, this episode is all about the pivot: from thinking like an influencer to building like a creator.____________________JOIN THE COMMUNITYIf you are looking for deeper strategy, accountability, & honest conversations with other serious content creators, the Creator's Leverage Guild was built for exactly thatLearn more and join here:Creator's Leverage Guild_____________________CHECK OUT OUR 2 NEW EBOOKS THAT JUST LAUNCHED!The AIP Master Guide - Stop guessing your way through AIP. In this episode, Mike & Ben sit down with Amazon Influencer and longtime product reviewer McKay Christensen to talk about one of the biggest shifts happening in the program right now: quality over quantity.McKay shares his background as a reviewer, how he built his business over time, and what his current income mix looks like across Amazon Influencer, Creator Connections, YouTube AdSense, and international earnings through Genius Links. He also talks through the data behind a browser extension he built to study thousands of top-performing upper-carousel videos and what that research revealed about ranking factors, video duration, thumbnails, and why stronger videos tend to outperform rushed content. The conversation dives into what actually helps creators stand out today, including better thumbnails, more intentional titles, comparison videos, real product testing, useful B-roll, and creating content that feels more unique and buyer-focused. Mike, Ben, and McKay also talk about why many creators need to pivot away from older high-volume strategies as the program becomes more saturated and competitive. They also cover practical workflow tips, including simple filming setups, using your phone more effectively, organizing footage, improving convenience, and building content in a way that creates more long-term freedom instead of constant burnout. If you are an Amazon Influencer, content creator, or product reviewer trying to create better videos, earn more per video, and build a smarter long-term strategy, this episode is packed with practical takeaways.____________________McKay C's YouTube ChannelView Channel Here!____________________JOIN THE COMMUNITYIf you are looking for deeper strategy, accountability, & honest conversations with other serious content creators, the Creator's Leverage Guild was built for exactly thatLearn more and join here:Creator's Leverage Guild_____________________CHECK OUT OUR 2 NEW EBOOKS THAT JUST LAUNCHED!The AIP Master Guide - Stop guessing your way through AIP. What if the healthcare system your loved one relies on doesn't even know they need help until it's too late — and what would it look like if it did? In this Q1 2026 episode, Jamie Preston sits down with Matt Staub, CEO of Your Health, for a candid and wide-ranging look at how one of the country's largest home-based care providers is navigating the evolving landscape of value-based care, population health, and the human experience at the center of it all. Matt brings his characteristic clarity and heart to a conversation that is equal parts strategy, story, and honest reckoning with what the system still gets wrong. Key topics covered: Why 11% of patients account for 67% of all healthcare spending — and why most of them don't know they're in an ACO The evolution of value-based care: from quality-over-cost to outcomes + patient experience over total costs How Your Health is becoming proactive — not reactive — about falls, readmissions, and high-needs patients The quiet crisis of patient trust: down from 71% in 2020 to just 33% today, and what the correlation means for hospitalizations Real stories: a 79-year-old patient who went from barely existing to living fully — and Matt's own mom, who hasn't fallen since leaving the hospital after her stroke If you work in healthcare, advocate for someone in the system, or simply believe that better is possible — this episode will change the way you see what care can be.

In this episode, Mike & Ben break down one of the biggest debates in the Amazon Influencer Program: quality versus quantity.A lot of creators fall into one of two camps. Some believe the answer is to post as many videos as possible and play a volume game. Others take a more intentional approach, focusing on better products, stronger videos, & content that stays on carousels longer. In this conversation, Mike & Ben explain why both approaches can work, but why quality often leads to better long-term results, higher earnings per video, & less burnout.Ben shares how he started out posting around 100 Amazon Influencer videos a month before shifting toward a more quality-first strategy after seeing that longer, better-made videos were performing better and lasting longer. Mike also talks through why low earnings often come from videos falling off carousels quickly, why product selection matters so much, and why creators need to think beyond just pumping out content. The episode also covers choosing products with real sales history, being more selective with samples, building long-term brand relationships with flat fees, retagging videos as ASINs change, & cleaning up your storefront over time.Mike and Ben also talk about why YouTube needs a completely different strategy than Amazon. They explain why blindly automating YouTube uploads is usually the wrong move and why search intent, titles, keywords, thumbnails, A/B testing, & evergreen content matter much more on YouTube than they do on Amazon onsite. If you are an Amazon Influencer, content creator, or product reviewer trying to make better videos, earn more per upload, & build a smarter long-term strategy across Amazon & YouTube, this episode will help you think more clearly about what actually moves the needle.____________________JOIN THE COMMUNITYIf you are looking for deeper strategy, accountability, & honest conversations with other serious content creators, the Creator's Leverage Guild was built for exactly that.Learn more and join here:Creator's Leverage Guild_____________________CHECK OUT OUR 2 NEW EBOOKS THAT JUST LAUNCHED!The AIP Master Guide - Stop guessing your way through AIP. In this episode, Mike and Ben talk through how AI is rapidly changing work, creativity, job security, and the way people need to think about side hustles and long-term financial stability. What started as skepticism around tools like ChatGPT has now shifted into a much bigger conversation about how AI is already impacting jobs, business, and the future of work. Mike and Ben break down how they personally use AI for brainstorming, outlines, thumbnails, business analysis, and workflow support, while also talking about the downsides, including inaccuracy, over-reliance, and the loss of human connection in certain creative areas.A major theme in this episode is that traditional job security is changing fast. As automation and AI continue to grow, more people are realizing they need additional skills, extra income streams, and a better long-term plan than simply relying on one job and hoping retirement works itself out.Mike and Ben make the case for building side hustles, developing practical skills, lowering expenses, and creating some form of evergreen income through things like YouTube, Amazon, content creation, or other online businesses. The idea is not to panic, but to build a security blanket that gives you more options as the world keeps changing. They also talk about which types of skills may hold up better in an AI-driven world, why hands-on real-world experience still matters, and how creators and entrepreneurs can use AI as a tool without letting it replace the things that make them valuable. If you've been thinking about AI, layoffs, retirement, side hustles, or what the future of work looks like, this episode is a grounded conversation about how to adapt, stay useful, and keep building.____________________JOIN THE COMMUNITYIf you are looking for deeper strategy, accountability, and honest conversations with other serious content creators, the Creator's Leverage Guild was built for exactly that.Learn more and join here:Creator's Leverage Guild_____________________CHECK OUT OUR 2 NEW EBOOKS THAT JUST LAUNCHED!The AIP Master Guide - Stop guessing your way through AIP.
In this episode, Mike and Ben are joined by Rob, the creator of Oink, to break down the recent turmoil inside the Amazon Influencer Program, including reporting issues, messaging outages, confusion around Creator Connections reporting, and the removal of Halo sales. This conversation is centered around what these Amazon Influencer Program changes actually mean for creators and, more importantly, what you should be focusing on next. While many creators are frustrated by broken reports and shifting data, the core fundamentals of the program have not changed. Mike, Ben, and Rob talk through why creators need to stop obsessing over short-term reporting problems and get back to the things that still move the needle: product research, consistency, strategy, and making quality videos that answer real buyer questions. The episode also covers how the Amazon Influencer Program is continuing to evolve, including new opportunities around Creator Connections, sponsored clicks, offsite traffic, mobile app video carousels, Amazon Live, and Creator Rewards bonuses. Ben shares how shifting more of his focus toward YouTube, Creator Connections, and offsite traffic has helped improve results and create a more diversified income stream.Mike, Ben, and Rob also talk about why creators should be thinking beyond free samples and start building stronger brand relationships, using better content and data to negotiate smarter opportunities. They discuss why authenticity matters more than ever, why unboxing videos alone are not enough, and how better long-form content, buyer-focused videos, and stronger execution can help creators stay competitive even when the platform changes. If you are an Amazon Influencer trying to understand the latest reporting changes, Halo sales removal, Creator Connections updates, and what still works inside the Amazon Influencer Program, this episode will help you cut through the noise and refocus on the right things.____________________JOIN THE COMMUNITYIf you are looking for deeper strategy, accountability, and honest conversations with other serious content creators, the Creator's Leverage Guild was built for exactly that.Learn more and join here:Creator's Leverage Guild_____________________WORK 1-ON-1 WITH MIKE AND BENGet personalized guidance on content strategy, monetization, brand deals, and scaling your creator business.• Book a 1-hour coaching call• Save with a 4-session coaching packageSign Me Up!_________________________JOIN OUR FREE FACEBOOK COMMUNITYConnect with other Amazon Influencers and content creators, ask questions, and stay up to date on what is working right now.Amazon Influencer Success Facebook Group_________________________TOOLS AND RESOURCES FOR CREATORSViral VueMake smarter content decisions and grow faster.Try Viral Vue hereUse code STRAHL10 for 10% off for lifeOinkTrack earnings and performance across platforms.Try Oink hereUse code STRAHL10 for 10% off for lifeDescriptEdit podcasts and videos faster and easier.Check out Descript hereGeniuslinks: Our #1 Deeplinking Pick!Try Geniuslinks!VidiQ: Our #1 pick for YouTube channel Insights!Try VidIQKeepa: Makes advanced product research for AIP a breeze!Try KeepaLasso: Deeplinking for Blogs & YouTubeGet LassoKadence WP: Great amazing websites for blogsTry KadenceAffiliate links. American International Pictures had made money with Italian films such as Black Sunday (1960) but would often need to oversee many changes to make the films suitable for an American audience. Their solution was to provide a script and co-produce a film so they could control the content. The film had a small budget of around $200,000 and although it definitely has its fair share of Schlock, Bava had a reputation for doing a lot on a small budget. My guests unravel why Mario Bava's reputation and love for this film continue to grow. Scott Higgins is Professor of Film at Wesleyan University as well as being the Curator of the Wesleyan Cinema Archives. In this episode, Mike and Ben break down their February earnings inside the Amazon Influencer Program and discuss several important Amazon Influencer changes that creators should be paying attention to right now. They share their February results, with Ben finishing the month at over $10,600 and Mike finishing around $9,200, along with a breakdown of where that revenue came from. The conversation covers Amazon onsite commissions, offsite earnings, Creator Connections campaigns, brand bonuses, international affiliate sales using Geniuslink, and YouTube traffic driving additional income.A major focus of this episode is the potential end of halo sales, what that means for Amazon Influencers, and why creators may need to shift back toward the fundamentals of product research and consistent content creation if reporting and attribution continue to change.Mike and Ben also discuss the growing opportunity around Amazon sponsored clicks, which is emerging as another potential offsite revenue stream for creators working with major brands. They talk about how creators can combine platforms like YouTube, Pinterest, and Amazon onsite videos to diversify traffic and reduce dependence on a single platform.Other topics include recent mobile carousel changes that may impact clicks, the expansion of excluded product categories, strategies for capturing TV viewers using QR codes, and why focusing on long-term creator fundamentals is still the safest path forward. If you're an Amazon Influencer, affiliate marketer, or content creator building income through Amazon and YouTube, this episode covers the key updates, strategies, and mindset shifts you should be thinking about right now.Oink Video for Excluded Products WorkaroundClick Here____________________JOIN THE COMMUNITYIf you are looking for deeper strategy, accountability, and honest conversations with other serious content creators, the Creator's Leverage Guild was built for exactly that.Learn more and join here:Creator's Leverage Guild_____________________WORK 1-ON-1 WITH MIKE AND BENGet personalized guidance on content strategy, monetization, brand deals, and scaling your creator business.• Book a 1-hour coaching call• Save with a 4-session coaching packageSign Me Up!_________________________JOIN OUR FREE FACEBOOK COMMUNITYConnect with other Amazon Influencers and content creators, ask questions, and stay up to date on what is working right now.Amazon Influencer Success Facebook Group_________________________TOOLS AND RESOURCES FOR CREATORSViral VueMake smarter content decisions and grow faster.Try Viral Vue hereUse code STRAHL10 for 10% off for lifeOinkTrack earnings and performance across platforms.Try Oink hereUse code STRAHL10 for 10% off for lifeDescriptEdit podcasts and videos faster and easier.Check out Descript hereGeniuslinks: Our #1 Deeplinking Pick!Try Geniuslinks!VidiQ: Our #1 pick for YouTube channel Insights!Try VidIQKeepa: Makes advanced product research for AIP a breeze!Try KeepaLasso: Deeplinking for Blogs & YouTubeGet LassoKadence WP: Great amazing websites for blogsTry KadenceAffiliate links. In this episode, Mike and Ben break down recent platform updates, creator tools, and a larger shift happening across YouTube and content creation as a whole. We start with updates that matter for creators, including Amazon's new sponsored content link that allows you to earn from clicks, new Oink features like Agent Oink for automated Creator Connections research, and the Daily Fetch automation that helps prevent missed campaign accepts when you're busy or traveling. We also touch on upcoming Viral View updates and share that the podcast is now officially available on YouTube.A big part of this episode is sparked by a recent Think Media discussion about YouTube demonetizing two high-earning, faceless, AI-driven channels. That conversation highlights important risks around over-reliance on AI, repetitive templates, and what YouTube considers “interchangeable” content.Referenced Think Media discussion:We unpack what this means for creators who are using AI in their workflow and why simply producing more content isn't always the answer. Mass uploads, templated formats, and fully automated channels can create short-term momentum but also long-term vulnerability. The core theme of this episode is that quality still wins. Creators who build a recognizable brand, add personality, break patterns, and avoid being interchangeable are far more resilient over time.We also discuss diversification. YouTube should be viewed as a distribution platform, not your only income stream. Between Amazon onsite videos, brand deals, YouTube Shopping tagging, email lists, and other monetization paths, creators who diversify are far less exposed to sudden platform shifts. If you're scaling content, experimenting with AI, or trying to protect your monetization while growing on YouTube, this episode will help you think more strategically about the long game.____________________JOIN THE COMMUNITYIf you are looking for deeper strategy, accountability, and honest conversations with other serious content creators, the Creator's Leverage Guild was built for exactly that.Learn more and join here:Creator's Leverage Guild_____________________WORK 1-ON-1 WITH MIKE AND BENGet personalized guidance on content strategy, monetization, brand deals, and scaling your creator business.• Book a 1-hour coaching call• Save with a 4-session coaching packageSign Me Up!_________________________JOIN OUR FREE FACEBOOK COMMUNITYConnect with other Amazon Influencers and content creators, ask questions, and stay up to date on what is working right now.Amazon Influencer Success Facebook Group_________________________TOOLS AND RESOURCES FOR CREATORSViral VueMake smarter content decisions and grow faster.Try Viral Vue hereUse code STRAHL10 for 10% off for lifeOinkTrack earnings and performance across platforms.Try Oink hereUse code STRAHL10 for 10% off for lifeDescriptEdit podcasts and videos faster and easier.Check out Descript hereGeniuslinks: Our #1 Deeplinking Pick!Try Geniuslinks!VidiQ: Our #1 pick for YouTube channel Insights!Try VidIQKeepa: Makes advanced product research for AIP a breeze!Try KeepaLasso: Deeplinking for Blogs & YouTubeGet LassoKadence WP: Great amazing websites for blogsTry KadenceAffiliate links. In this episode, Mike and Ben break down the creator subscriptions, software, and tools they personally pay for, and which ones are actually worth it for Amazon Influencers and content creators. As you grow in the Amazon Influencer Program, YouTube, or content creation in general, it's easy to feel like you need to pay for every tool that promises faster growth. The truth is, most creators can go very far using free tools, and upgrading too early often leads to wasted money without improving results. We talk through the free tools every creator should start with, including Canva, iMovie, CapCut, and cloud storage, and when it actually makes sense to upgrade to paid software like Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or other editing platforms. We also break down the tools that can directly improve efficiency and increase earnings, including Oink and Viral View for Amazon Influencer product research and Creator Connections, Geniuslink for international affiliate linking, vidIQ for YouTube optimization, Keepa for product research, and ChatGPT for workflow efficiency. In addition, we share how we personally manage our creator subscriptions, including how to audit tools regularly, avoid unnecessary monthly expenses, and evaluate whether a tool is truly saving time or making money. We also discuss real-world creator tool costs, what we currently spend per month and per year, and how we decide whether a subscription is worth keeping or canceling. If you're an Amazon Influencer, YouTube creator, or content creator trying to grow your income while avoiding unnecessary expenses, this episode will help you understand which tools matter, which ones can wait, and how to build your creator stack the right way.________________________JOIN THE COMMUNITYIf you are looking for deeper strategy, accountability, and honest conversations with other serious content creators, the Creator's Leverage Guild was built for exactly that.Learn more and join here:Creator's Leverage GuildWORK 1-ON-1 WITH MIKE AND BENGet personalized guidance on content strategy, monetization, brand deals, and scaling your creator business.• Book a 1-hour coaching call• Save with a 4-session coaching packageSign Me Up!_________________________JOIN OUR FREE FACEBOOK COMMUNITYConnect with other Amazon Influencers and content creators, ask questions, and stay up to date on what is working right now.Amazon Influencer Success Facebook Group_________________________TOOLS AND RESOURCES FOR CREATORSViral VueMake smarter content decisions and grow faster.Try Viral Vue hereUse code STRAHL10 for 10% off for lifeOinkTrack earnings and performance across platforms.Try Oink hereUse code STRAHL10 for 10% off for lifeDescriptEdit podcasts and videos faster and easier.Check out Descript hereGeniuslinks: Our #1 Deeplinking Pick!Try Geniuslinks!VidiQ: Our #1 pick for YouTube channel Insights!Try VidIQKeepa: Makes advanced product research for AIP a breeze!Try KeepaLasso: Deeplinking for Blogs & YouTubeGet LassoKadence WP: Great amazing websites for blogsNotion: Super helpful AI Agenthttps://www.notion.com/productCanva: So many uses! House of Usher (1960), The Pit and the Pendulum (1961), and The Masque of the Red Death (1964) In the beginning of his career as a producer / director Roger Corman was known for cranking out cheap and fast black and white pictures that always made money. He worked in all genres, but it was mainly the horror and sci-fi pictures in the mid to late '60s he was known for. All that changed in 1960, when he convinced AIP to let him adapt a story from Edgar Allan Poe, but in color, with a bigger budget, and longer shooting schedule. That started a new phase of Corman's career, which also made an even bigger star of Vincent Price. In this episode, we take a deep dive into three of these Poe adaptations, and not necessarily looking in the faithfulness of them, but in their production, the incredible casts, the look, the style, as well as the feel of them. They really do get better each and every time you watch them. Hopefully after listening to this episode, you'll decide to either venture down this dark path for the first time, or take a revisit to admire the doom and gloom they all have. In this episode, Tina sits down with Dane Johnson, founder of Crohn's Colitis Lifestyle, to break down the real differences between IBD and IBS and why confusing the two can keep people stuck. They dive into the emotional weight of chronic digestive symptoms, the fear around food, and what it truly means to “heal your gut.” From popular diets like SCD and AIP to digestive enzymes, peptides, and biohacking tools, they explore what actually helps. More importantly, they zoom out to the often-overlooked foundations: anatomy, digestion, nervous system regulation, mindset, and long-term sustainability. This conversation challenges the idea that food alone is the answer and offers a grounded, empowering perspective for anyone navigating Crohn's, ulcerative colitis, or chronic gut inflammation. Here's what you'll learn: - Why food alone isn't the full solution for Crohn's and ulcerative colitis - The lifestyle factors that silently trigger inflammation and most patients ignore - Why your happiness and mindset are not “woo” and how they affect your symptoms - How to create your own IBD food philosophy instead of following strict diets forever - His take on supplements, peptides, exosomes, and who actually needs them. - Why most people waste money before fixing foundational habits - His go-to “Digestion-Friendly Salad” and why it works for sensitive guts - One mistake almost everyone with IBD makes when trying to heal their digestion Connect with Tina Haupert: https://carrotsncake.com/ Facebook: Carrots 'N' Cake https://www.facebook.com/carrotsncake Instagram: @carrotsncake https://www.instagram.com/carrotsncake YouTube: Tina Haupert https://www.youtube.com/user/carrotsncake About Tina Haupert: Tina Haupert is the owner of Carrots ‘N' Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). The Cinematography Podcast Episode 346: Adolpho Veloso, ABC, AIP The film Train Dreams tells a story that feels less like a narrative and more like a memory. It began as an independent project that premiered at Sundance to critical acclaim before getting acquired by Netflix. Director Clint Bentley and cinematographer Adolpho Veloso, ABC, AIP, chose to shoot in the rugged landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. Veloso's radical commitment to naturalism in the film meant relying almost entirely on firelight, candlelight and natural light. The gorgeous result has earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography. After their successful collaboration on the low-budget indie movie Jockey, Veloso and director Clint Bentley knew a tiny crew and small group of actors could lead to good, intimate storytelling. They developed a specific visual shorthand designed to make Train Dreams feel like a discovered artifact. They chose a 3:2 aspect ratio, a deliberate nod to still photography, intended to evoke the sensation of looking through a dusty box of old family photos. “We wanted the movie to feel like memories, like finding a box of pictures,” explains Veloso. “The whole visual motif came from still images and still photography in a way.” Using a single, handheld ARRI ALEXA 35 camera operated by Veloso allowed the actors freedom to improvise and move naturally, often capturing moments that a more rigid, multi-camera setup would have missed. To maintain a clear narrative thread through Robert's (Joel Edgerton) life, Veloso established visual rules using specific lighting shifts to distinguish between the warmth of Robert's good memories and the starker, haunting quality of his loss. Grounding the film in nature was extremely important. The team scoured Washington state, looking for woods that appeared untouched by time, yet remained accessible enough for a film crew. They shot around the Spokane area, where the drier weather and specific light quality offered the perfect backdrop for the film's mid-century setting. Working in national forests meant strict regulations with a small footprint, and timber cutting and axe work was carefully planned. Using almost entirely firelight, candlelight and natural light is very nontraditional filmmaking, and required a great deal of planning from all departments. For the two sets, the cabin and fire tower, Veloso spent weeks tracking solar orientation. The crew carefully built the cabin to exact specifications to allow plenty of light into the space. “You have the privilege to build it the way you want,” Veloso explains. “It's a lot of studies of what the sun is doing from week one to week seven. You have to decide where to place the windows so the light continuity holds as the seasons shift.” The most interesting technical choice was the total ban on LED lighting for period scenes. Veloso wanted the authentic flicker and color temperature of the era, but candles alone often create harsh, distracting shadows. To solve this, the team engineered a “1920s Sky Panel.” This custom rig used large reflective surfaces combined with candles and diffusion to create a soft, glowing light source that felt period-accurate yet flattering on the actors' faces. This required a constant dance between the camera and the art department. Candles, oil lamps, firelight, and campfires had to be good quality light to expose the image properly. For campfire scenes, the gaffer measured light levels in real-time, signaling the fire safety monitor to add wood precisely when the "exposure" needed a boost. A devastating forest fire at the film's climax required a shift from the naturalistic to the surreal. To capture the flames and feeling of a real forest fire, the production moved to an LED volume stage. Robert is dreaming about what happened in the fire, so the fire scene had to be strange and surreal. Veloso shot at a low frame rate with a wide shutter to create a blurred, fever dream aesthetic. The crew also shot in previously burned forests, capturing the aftermath of a real fire. Through Veloso's lens, Train Dreams is a tactile, flickering meditation on time itself. Capitalism as an economic system has been around in various forms for over a thousand years and according to our featured guest this week, it keeps evolving. Join us for a lively and challenging discussion between Ralph and Harvard history professor, Sven Beckert, as they discuss his book “Capitalism: A Global History.”Sven Beckert is the Laird Bell Professor of History at Harvard University. He has written widely on the economic, social, and political history of capitalism. His book Empire of Cotton won the Bancroft Prize and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. His latest book is Capitalism: A Global History.Capitalism has existed within a whole range of political systems of organizing political power. And this includes authoritarian regimes; this includes fascist regimes; and this includes also liberal democratic regimes such as Great Britain and the United States. And you see this kind of tension emerging today within the United States in which there is a kind of concern, I think, among some capital-owning elites about liberal democracy. They see that as being limiting to some of their business interests.Sven BeckertIn a way, the book tries to not make us to be just powerless cogs in a machine and not powerless cogs in the unfolding of history. But the book very much emphasizes that the particular shape that capitalism has taken at any particular moment in time has a lot to do also with questions of the state. It has a lot to do with questions of political power. It has a lot to do with questions of social contestation. And sometimes capitalism has been reshaped drastically by the actions of people with very little power. And I show that in particular when I look at the end of the slave-based plantation economy in the Americas, which is very much driven by the collective mobilization of some of the poorest and most exploited people on planet Earth—namely the enslaved workers who grow all that sugar and all that cotton or that tobacco in the 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.Sven BeckertI think markets and market activities have existed in all human societies. That is not particular to capitalism. And the few efforts in world history in which people have tried to get rid of the market in its entirety have been pretty much economic disasters. So there is a place for the market. There has been a place for the market in all human societies. But in capitalism, the market takes on an importance that it didn't take on in other forms of economic life… I think it is so important to think about this, because, as I said earlier, capitalism is not natural. It's not the only form of economic life on planet Earth. Indeed, it's the opposite. It's a revolutionary departure from older forms of the organization of economic life.Sven BeckertTrump seems really concerned about impeachment because it's beyond his control. And he sees if (with inflation) the economy starts going down more, unemployment up, prices up, all these campaign promises bogus, polls going down—he fears impeachment. And I've yet to hear him say if he was impeached and removed from office, he wouldn't leave the White House—while he's defied all other federal laws, constitutional provisions, and foreign treaties.Ralph NaderNews 1/30/26* Following the murders of U.S. citizens Alex Pretti and Renée Good by ICE agents in Minneapolis – along with the shooting of Julio Sosa-Celis, the abduction of 5-year-old Liam Ramos along with his father, and the arrest of an estimated 3,000 people – the Minnesota AFL-CIO called a General Strike for workers to demand ICE leave the state. This one-day general strike, staged during temperatures of -20°F, drew as many as 100,000 workers into the streets, according to Labor Notes. Participating unions included the SEIU, AFT, and the CWA, along with UNITE HERE Local 17, OPEIU Local 12, IATSE Local 13, and AFSCME Council 5, among many others. Minneapolis has been the site of major labor actions before, perhaps most famously the 1934 General Strike, and it remains a relatively union-dense hub today. It was also the locus of the 2020 George Floyd protests, which many see as a reason why the Trump administration has been so hostile towards the locals.* With the spiraling situation in Minnesota, the Trump administration has finally moved to deescalate somewhat. Per POLITICO, “DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, has…been sidelined,” and border czar Tom Homan has been dispatched to the state to take over operations there. Moreover, the Atlantic reports “Gregory Bovino has been removed from his role as Border Patrol ‘commander at large' and will return to his former job in El Centro, California, where he is expected to retire soon.” While hardly an adequate response to the crisis, these moves do show that Trump sees how badly his lieutenants have bungled their mission. It remains to be seen whether this will mark the end of the high-lawlessness period of ICE activity or if the agency will simply shift its primary theater of operation.* For Minnesota Republicans meanwhile, the situation is nothing short of catastrophic. While the party's fortunes had looked promising just weeks ago, some, like Republican attorney Chris Madel, now say “National Republicans have made it nearly impossible for a Republican to win a statewide election in Minnesota.” Madel had been a candidate for the GOP gubernatorial nomination, but dropped out abruptly this week, citing national Republicans' “stated retribution on the citizens of our state,” per the Star Tribune. While the election is still 10 months away – “a lifetime in politics,” as one person quoted in the story puts it – it is hard to imagine Minnesotans forgetting about the murders of Renée Good and Alex Pretti and delivering a statewide victory for Republicans for the first time since 2006.* Speaking of dropping out, the New York Times reports Eleanor Holmes Norton, the 18-term incumbent delegate representing Washington, D.C. in Congress, has filed a termination notice for her re-election campaign. Norton, a civil rights activist and law professor, was elected D.C. delegate in 1991 and earned a reputation as D.C.'s “warrior on the Hill.” Today, she is the oldest person serving in the House at 88 years old. Norton has shown signs of cognitive decline but insisted she would seek reelection and even after her campaign filed this termination paperwork Norton did not make a public statement for days, raising questions about how aware she even was of this decision – a disgraceful end to a towering career. If any silver lining is to be found, one hopes this will serve as a cautionary tale for other members of Congress not to cling to their seats to the bitter end.* In more congressional news, Axios reports, “Nearly half of the Democrats on the House Oversight Committee broke with their party's leadership in stunning fashion…by voting to hold former President Bill Clinton in contempt of Congress,” for his refusal to testify in the committee's probe related to Jeffrey Epstein. While House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries whipped votes against the motion, Ranking Member Robert Garcia gave committee members permission to “vote their conscience.” With the defections, the vote to hold former President Clinton in contempt was a lopsided 34-8. Nine Democrats voted yes, eight no, and two present. On a separate vote to hold Hillary Clinton in contempt, far fewer Democrats broke ranks. In that vote, Democrats Rashida Tlaib, Summer Lee and Melanie Stansbury voted yes, Dave Min voted present, and the rest voted no. The contempt measure will now move to the House floor and Jeffries must decide whether or not to formally whip votes against the measure there. If it passes a full house vote, the Clintons could be held in jail on contempt charges until they agree to testify, as Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro were during the January 6th investigation.* In more news out of D.C., legendary modern classical composer Philip Glass has pulled the world premiere of his Lincoln Symphony from the Kennedy Center in protest of the venue's takeover by Trump and his cronies. In a statement, Glass wrote “After thoughtful consideration , I have decided to withdraw my Symphony No. 15” because the symphony is “a portrait of Abraham Lincoln, and the values of the Kennedy Center [and its current leadership] today are in direct conflict with the message of the Symphony.” Just days after this embarrassing fiasco, Kevin Couch, the Center's new head of artistic programming, abruptly resigned without explanation, per the Hill.* Meanwhile, in Alaska, the Anchorage Daily News reports the Alaskan Independence Party – the state's third largest political party founded in the 1970s to push for Alaskan independence from the United States – has voted to dissolve itself. Ballot Access News reports that the party leaders felt that there is “little support” for Alaskan independence today and “the public doesn't even understand the party's original purpose.” Still, the party stands as one of the most successful minor parties of the twentieth century, electing Walter Hickel Governor in 1999 and electing a state legislator in 1992. It almost elected another candidate Tyler Ivanoff, in 2022; he won 48.73% of the vote. The state of Alaska will now give the roughly 19,000 members of the AIP the chance to re-register with another party, per Alaska Public Media.* In more positive independent political news, the Chicago Tribune reports Southwest Side Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez has launched an independent bid for Illinois' 4th Congressional District seat. Sigcho-Lopez, a DSA member and progressive firebrand in Chicago, is campaigning to “end tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy and dramatically expand social services in housing and health care,” in Congress and is “aligned with working-class labor unions and street protesters pushing back against Trump.” This seat is currently held by stalwart progressive Jesús “Chuy” García, but he pulled an unsavory bait and switch, announcing he would “not seek reelection just hours before the party primary filing deadline, leaving no time for other hopefuls to get in the race for the suddenly vacant seat as his chief of staff, Patty Garcia, became the only candidate in the Democratic primary.” This has forced other candidates like Sigcho-Lopez to launch independent campaigns. To get on the ballot, he must collect at least 10,816 petition signatures between February 25th and May 26th.* In more state and local news, NPR reports that as the federal government withdraws from international institutions like the World Health Organizations, states are stepping into the breach. California, for example, has joined the WHO's Global Outbreak Alert & Response Network, or GOARN, and other states like Illinois are poised to follow suit. States like California and Illinois, being sub-national entities, can not join the WHO as a full member, but are eligible to participate in WHO subgroups like GOARN. In a statement, California Governor Gavin Newsom said “The Trump administration's withdrawal from WHO is a reckless decision that will hurt all Californians and Americans…California will not bear witness to the chaos this decision will bring.”* Finally, Axios is out with a major story on the Catholic Church emerging as a “bulwark of resistance,” to Trump's authoritarianism. This piece cites Archbishop Paul Coakley, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, condemning the ICE killings as “examples of the violence that represent failures in our society to respect the dignity of every human life.” This piece adds that “the three highest-ranking heads of U.S. archdioceses also recently issued a plea for ‘moral foreign policy'” in response to the lawless American military action abroad, namely in Venezuela, Cuba and Iran. Most strikingly, Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, the Catholic archbishop for the military's archdiocese, is quoted saying it would be “morally acceptable” for troops to disobey orders that violate their conscience. A related question of troops disobeying illegal orders has been much discussed lately, with Trump suggesting members of Congress who reminded troops of their obligation to do so should be hanged for treason. Notably, Pew data suggests 43% of Catholics in the U.S. were born outside the country or had at least one parent born outside the U.S. Reverend Tom Reese, a Jesuit priest and analyst, said the people being targeted by Trump's immigration crackdown are “the people in the pews.”This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. Hello, Kaiju Lovers. Jimmy From NASA here. I'm writing the shownotes for this episode, because, as you'll hear, Nate had a hard time during this broadcast. In fact, he's been having a hard time all season; he was just good at hiding it on the air. I wanted to let you know before hearing this. Anyway, Nate discusses a Patreon-sponsored double feature from former (and future?) MIFV MAX member Brad “Batman” Eddleman with The Amazing Colossal Man and War of the Colossal Beast (1957 and 1958, respectively). These Bert I. Gordon movies hold a nostalgic place of honor for Nate, because these were the first episodes of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 he ever saw. The first one, as Nate argues, is better than most people realize, while the sequel…isn't. But for MSTies, these are controversial movies thanks to the widow of AIP's co-founder. You'll learn about these and more in MIFV's season four finale! Episode edited by Jesse Blount and Nathan Marchand.
