To a baseball purist, Pete LaCock was a dangerous hitter. His eye, his plate discpline and his ability to come through in the clutch allowed him to have a terrific 9 year MLB career before playing in Japan. But it's his love for the game, his rivalry with Hall of Famer Bob Gibson, and his famous family (and their friends) that make this such an endearing conversation with a great storyteller. If you're a Cubs fan, Royals fan, fan of Hollywood Squares, My Three Sons, The Dick Van Dyke Show or just of great stories, this episode is a must listen with Pete LaCock. (listen closely and you can hear his wife "helping" Pete with his stories. We got a 2-1!!)

Jeff Nelligan is an Army Veteran that is recognized as one of the foremost commentators in the world of American Parenting. His book “Four Lessons from My Three Sons; How You Can Raise Resilient Kids” spent four months on the Amazon Parenting Best Seller's List. His works have also been cited in numerous parenting magazines. In addition to his Army Service, he formerly worked for three members of our US Congress and was twice a Presidential appointee. He currently works as a Senior Public Affairs executive in Washington, DC Jeff shares a shocking statistic. Seventy five percent of the time you will spend in your children's lives will take place before the time they reach 12 years old. He emphasizes that raising resilient children must be an INTENTIONAL strategy. The four elements of his strategy is based upon four eternal military values; courtesy, confidence, ambition & resilience in adversity. We discuss several examples of the techniques and exercises he would conduct on a daily basis with his three sons. He started at a young age and often made the “tests” fun so that they would more easily get engaged. It is important to teach a child the importance of building relationships with the real world early in life. They will then have the “muscle memory” to face challenges that will inevitably arise. All of Jeff's sons have now embarked on military careers of their own. They still use “key phrases” they learned from those early life lessons taught by their father. I cannot recall the last time I found so much value in only 140 pages. I highly recommend “Four Lessons from My Three Sons; How You Can Raise Resilient Kids”. The book would also make an excellent gift for new parents. TAKEAWAY: “If you don't have a strategy for raising your kids, society will do it for you – and that may not be something you want.

Actor and Activist Ed Begley Jr. Discusses His Latest Book To The Temple of Tranquility and Step On it! Ed Begley Jr. is truly one of a kind, a performer who is known equally for his prolific film and television career and his environmental activism. From an appearance on My Three Sons to a notable role in Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman to starring in St. Elsewhere—as well as films with Jack Nicholson, Meryl Streep, and mockumentarian Christopher Guest—Begley has worked with just about everyone in Hollywood. His “green” bona fides date back to 1970, and have been the topic of two books, a reality show, countless media appearances, and even repeated spoofs on The Simpsons (in one episode, Begley's solar‑powered car stalls out on train tracks, but is saved when the train is revealed to be an “Ed Begley Solar‑Powered Train”). In To the Temple of Tranquility…And Step On It!, Begley shares a fountain of hilarious and poignant stories throughout his life. The memoir is candid and endearing; in one chapter, he is summoned to Marlon Brando's house to discuss the practical uses of electric eels. In another, he tells the story of taking Annette Bening to the Oscars in “an oddball kit-car that had gull wing doors, and was nearly impossible to get in or out of, unless you were a yoga master, which fortunately she was.” Not to mention insightful and surprising tales about The Beatles, Monty Python, Richard Pryor, Cesar Chavez, Jeff Goldblum, Tom Waits, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carrie Fisher, and so many more luminaries. Begley's unmistakable voice is honest and revealing in a way that only a comic of his caliber can accomplish. Behind all the stories, Begley has wisdom to impart. This is a book about family, friends, addiction, failure, and redemption. Connect with us on our website for more amazing conversations! www.brettallanshow.com Got some feedback? In July 1969, ninety-four percent of American televisions were tuned to coverage of Apollo 11's mission to the moon. How did space exploration, once the purview of rocket scientists, reach a larger audience than My Three Sons? Why did a government program whose standard operating procedure had been secrecy turn its greatest achievement into a communal experience? In Marketing the Moon, David Meerman Scott and Richard Jurek tell the story of one of the most successful marketing and public relations campaigns in history: the selling of the Apollo program. Primed by science fiction, magazine articles, and appearances by Wernher von Braun on the “Tomorrowland” segments of the Disneyland prime time television show, Americans were a receptive audience for NASA's pioneering “brand journalism.” Scott and Jurek describe sophisticated efforts by NASA and its many contractors to market the facts about space travel—through press releases, bylined articles, lavishly detailed background materials, and fully produced radio and television features—rather than push an agenda. American astronauts, who signed exclusive agreements with Life magazine, became the heroic and patriotic faces of the program. And there was some judicious product placement: Hasselblad was the “first camera on the moon”; Sony cassette recorders and supplies of Tang were on board the capsule; and astronauts were equipped with the Exer-Genie personal exerciser. Everyone wanted a place on the bandwagon. Generously illustrated with vintage photographs, artwork, and advertisements, many never published before, Marketing the Moon shows that when Neil Armstrong took that giant leap for mankind, it was a triumph not just for American engineering and rocketry but for American marketing and public relations. David Meerman Scott is a marketing strategist and the author of three bestselling books,The New Rules of Marketing and PR, Real-Time Marketing, and Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead. Marketing the Moon: The Selling of the Apollo Lunar Program by David Meerman Scott and Richard Jurek About the Book: One of the most successful public relations campaigns in history, featuring heroic astronauts, press-savvy rocket scientists, enthusiastic reporters, deep-pocketed defense contractors, and Tang. "One of our favorite guests on Discover the Word has been Sally Lloyd-Jones, known for her “Jesus Storybook Bible”. What was the subtitle for the book? (Every story whispers His name). But is that claim an exaggeration or a clever marketing hook, or does every story really whisper Jesus' name? Even the difficult ones? In this episode, we want to test that idea by looking at one of the darkest moments in the early days of human history. And it involves what we could call “My Three Sons.” WAYS TO LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE:
