That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick shines a light on Shia LaBeouf's two turns as Saturday Night Live host—both surprisingly strong, both likely his last. Packed with standout sketches and offbeat moments, the episodes featured Shia as a bizarrely delightful version of magician Doug Henning on a twisted Match Game, and as one half of a duo of underage knuckleheads scheming to score beer with Andy Samberg. There's also a nod to Indiana Jones and a solid lineup of SNL regulars including Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Kenan Thompson, Maya Rudolph, and Fred Armisen. Nick shares behind-the-scenes stories from the tapings and wraps things up with Shia's wild retelling of his late-night Walgreens arrest on The Late Show with David Letterman. A look back at a talented, unpredictable host who nailed it—and probably won't be back. [EP 124]

Cold Glitter: The Untold Story of Canadian Glam (Feral House, 2025) uncovers a forgotten yet fascinating chapter on glam rock music and culture...from Canada. Los Angeles-based multi-disciplinary artist Robert Dayton taps his Canadian roots to reveal mind-blowing stories of musicians fighting to be heard. It's a universal story of determined creators striving to make their voices heard. Dayton has spent years researching and interviewing these ground-breaking musicians trapped by geography, colonial mindsets, and the cultural behemoth that is the United States. There's no denying that glam rock was marginalized in Canada. In fact, RCA almost didn't release the 1973 Bowie-produced Lou Reed album "Transformer" in Canada because they didn't see a market for it. Of course, they were wrong! Young Canadians, like youth around the world, were rebelling against the oppressive conservative mainstream culture and saw themselves in the anything-goes freedom of glam rock. Cold Glitter gets at the reasons why: nature vs. artifice, old world values vs. new freedoms, and how transgressive actions--including gender play--shook the Canadian art establishment to its core. Filled with stories from musicians about what they did to build a career and fight against the old guard controlling the airwaves and stages. Readers everywhere will find solidarity with the all-too-familiar story of artists who were attacked for appearing outrageous and daring to be different. Within the struggle to be fabulous are mind-blowing anecdotes of fun and mayhem. Readers will be taken back to the seventies as they meet the unknown and infamous musicians and artists who dared to be glamorous. Familiar names like magician Doug Henning, Vancouver band Sweeney Todd and their lead singer and one-hit-wonder, Nik Gilder, and his replacement, Bryan Adams, to underground heroes like the Hollywood Brats to hundreds of musicians who put away their mascara and left their glamorous wild days behind. Cold Glitter is filled with rare (and sometimes outrageous) images throughout and additional chapters on glam fashion, film, and comedy in Canada. Learn more about your ad choices. In this installment of Conversations with Close, my guest is the man who, as a writer, editor, and/or publisher, is responsible for many of the most important magic texts published in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. If you have read, studied, enjoyed, and benefitted from books like The Vernon Chronicles, The Collected Works of Alex Elmsley, Carneycopia, the Card College series (in English), The Books of Wonder, and Mnemonica (in English), you can thank Stephen Minch. I was well aware of Stephen's prowess as a writer when we met for the first time in 1992 at an Ibidem convention held at the Old Stone Inn in Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario; we hit it off immediately. Although our paths don't cross that often, I always enjoy the time we spend together. He is a fascinating individual. The reason for our interview is the soon-to-be-released book, Flamenco, featuring magic by the maestro, Juan Tamariz (see the review in the Jan 2025 Michael Close Newsletter). The book has been in the pipeline since 1995; Stephen gives us the backstory, plus fascinating reminiscences of Mickey Hades, Doug Henning, Martin Nash, Alex Elmsley, and Tommy Wonder. I think you'll really enjoy listening to one of the true giants in the history of magic publishing.

RJ City and Dalton Castle are back! RJ recently learned about a nickname the school librarians had for him and he has mixed feelings. Is it Tall Poppy syndrome? He doesn't garden. Also he has a trading card! Dalton does not have a trading card which we think is criminal. Speaking of, apparently Renee Paquette carries a knife? Dalton had a big fishing incident and also he painted his desk. We also discuss Doug Henning, bunnies, Frankie Valli, impressions, excess mugs, endless pools and so much more. Send us a Text Message.Andy Gross is a seasoned comic magician and ventriloquist who found his love for magic at age nine, influenced by the film "Magic" and magicians like Doug Henning. His perspective on the combination of comedy and magic is one that sees these elements as crucial components for captivating and engaging audiences. This unique approach was shaped by his early experiences in St. Louis, where he honed his craft in card tricks and ventriloquism, frequenting local magic shops. Adding a comedic twist to his performances, inspired by comedy legends Don Rickles and Rodney Dangerfield, Andy believes that comedy provides an extra layer of entertainment to his magic shows, creating a dynamic and engaging experience for his audience. Mark Jensen is not a name you may (yet) be familiar with, but his story of collecting is one among hundreds, if not thousands, of those of us who have found a niche where we can enjoy the history of our art by just looking at our walls or across the room to see the collectible relic. His story represents those collectors who have a passion for a particular area of our vast art. His friendship with the late Marshall Brodien led to him ultimately being the “caretaker” of Marshall's magic collection. There are others who are notable magic collectors who gather magic from our rich history (like Chip Romero who specializes in collecting all things related to Doug Henning) plus other ephemera and props from some of the magic celebrities of yesteryear. View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize Mark Jensen lived in the Chicago, Illinois, area and grew up watching the Bozo Show on television that featured Wizzo the Wizard (Marshall Brodien). Later Mark found that he lived rather close to Marshall and developed a friendship with the late wizard. In this week's episode, Mark talks about that friendship and some of the stories that Marshall shared with him. Mark also talks about some of the other things in his collection (like items from “The Great Buck Howard” movie) and his passion for science fiction plus suggestions on how others might begin their own collecting. The podcast explores the bond between Diane and her mother, Mary Thornton, who lived to the age of 103 in The Village of Humber Heights, and the wisdom and working relationship they shared for 50 years. Have a listen as hosts Kathy Buckworth and Evelyn Brindle welcome Diane Dupuy to share her Story from the Green Bench. Diane's mother honed in on what she could do and what she was good at rather than what she struggled with. She excelled in imagination and creativity. "My mother built me a puppet theatre when I was a little girl. She told me not to be afraid as the puppets will do the talking for me." - Diane Dupuy She enjoyed performing closely with her friend at local events, Doug Henning, who went on to become a world-renowned magician. "As long as your imagination makes the world a better place." - Mary Thornton "Great spirits always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds." -Albert Einstein In creating the Famous People Players Diane chose the black light technique as no one would see the players, and who they are, so they won't be afraid of them. This episode is dedicated to those who remember the past and for those who want to learn more about our rich history. This week we travel back in time in our Grateful Dead VW bus and visit with magician and co-founder of the Foan Family Circus, Steve Aldrich. It was a simpler time when magicians were experimenting with new presentations and popular music of the time. It was at the height of Doug Henning's popularity who was considered by some as a “Hippie Magician”. Steve Aldrich also performed magic at the famed Tower Bar in Snowmass at a time when Doc Eason was still a waiter Steve and his band of merry men (and a woman) surprised and entertained magicians with their “tongue in cheek” original presentations of their “Foan Family Circus” at many magic conventions during the late 1970's to early 1980's. So what happened to the group? That and more will be the topic of discussion in this week's episode. If you are more of a visual person, then you will enjoy this video of our conversation recorded via Zoom. View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize Steve talks this week about the formation of the Foan Family Circus, their original presentations and music, their performances at magic conventions (one of which won them the Senator Crandall Comedy Award at Abbott's Get Together), plus the origins of magic at the Tower Bar starting with Bob Sheets then passed down to Steve Aldrich and Steve Spill. Passenger 3: Former Imagineer, Illusion Designer adn Author - Jim Steinmeyer Climbing aboard our time machine today is the proverbial man behind the curtain. Jim Steinmeyer is one of the world's foremost illusion designers for themed entertainment, theater, and television. If you've ever seen Doug Henning, David Copperfield, Ricky Jay, or Penn & Teller perform, then you've probably seen his work. Jim is the author of a number of books about magic history and illusion design. He's a former Disney Imagineer, the writer and producer of A&E's 4-hour documentary The History of Magic, a contributing editor to Magic magazine, and a former two-time president of the legendary Magic Castle in Hollywood.
With over 100 books on kid show magic, David Ginn stands as the King of the Kid Shows, in my opinion. He has single-handedly influenced more magicians over the decades by providing commercial, scripted routines for the children's show entertainer than anyone can count. And when you add his DVD's, lectures, and magazine columns, he is a rock star in our community. His routines and tricks were instrumental in the core of many of my children's shows from birthday parties, to family shows, Scout banquets, libraries and schools and many of his routines and ideas applied to and influenced some routines in my adult shows. I would go further to say that any magician with a magic library and who has ever performed for kids probably has one or more of David's books in their libraries. View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize This week David Ginn talks about some of his experiences over the years plus his relationships with J.B. In our lifetime there have been a lot of magicians and illusionists. So much that he was named “Magician of the Century”!And now he's pulling back the curtain…slightly…with the new CW celebrity competition, Magic With The Stars! Each week, two celebrities go head to head, learning and then performing some of Criss Angel's biggest illusions, competing for the ultimate prize of The Golden Wand!We caught up with Criss this morning to find out more!

Rerun. John, Paul, George and Ringo travelled to a transcendental meditation workshop in Bangor, Wales on 25th August, 1967 - at the invitation of ‘giggling guru', Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly question whether the retreat lead them to give up LSD; reveal how Ringo, frankly, never really seemed to be in to it; and uncover the Maharishi's later plans for a Yogic amusement park... Dennis connects via Zoom with writer-actor-comedian-magician Judy Carter about her new autobiographical stage play A Death Defying Escape, which is currently playing at the Hudson Theatre Guild in Hollywood. Judy talks about the play's 5-year odyssey from conception to production, digging deep for the show's dramatic scenes, working with magic designer Craig Dickens on the show's illusions, and the play's central theme, which is how can we escape what has happened to us in the past and to find love in the present? She also addresses sexism in the world of magic, explains why there are no famous female magicians and recalls the time Doug Henning got handsy with her during a private tutorial. Other topics include: her #1-on-Amazon book The New Comedy Bible, the National Organization of Women gig that helped her realize she was gay, being the opening act for Prince, getting on Oprah with a book that 59 agents rejected, falling in love in her 60's with a millennial, her "Say Yes' philosophy of life and that time she literally got carried out of the Magic Castle by a colleague who couldn't handle a woman doing close-up magic. www.deathdefyingescape.com

Imro Fox was known as The Comedy Conjurer and may have been the first comedy magician who did good strong magic and not just lampooned magicians. I tell of his life and his magic. I also talk a bit more about Dr. Walford Bodie & I talk about Doug Henning because we just had his 20th Anniversary of his passing on Feb 7th, 2020. As always, music provided by http://www.purple-planet.com CORRECTION: FOX is NOT buried in Evergreen Cemetery as I stated on my podcast. He is in Oheb Shalom Cemetery which is next to Evergreen in Hillside NJ. #Imro Fox
