The Ox-Bow Incident directed by William A. Wellman and starring Henry Fonda, Dana Andrews, and Harry Morgan.Episode Roundup: The Cowpunchers are once again up against a town of assholes. Amy finds a movie that does, indeed, begin as most Western do. Stu finds much in this movie's message that could be applied to today.

She shares so many great stories about on-set pranks, guest star salaries, her baby's gender reveal by Harry Morgan, and the Christmas gift from Burt Metcalfe that she still uses to this day. Plus, Karen tells us what it was like standing next to McLean Stevenson during the shooting of *that* scene... and why you should never order tuna on Fridays in the Fox commissary. "MARY BETH HUGHES - CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH" - 3/03/2025 For those of you who don't know the charms of MARY BETH HUGHES, when she was under contract at MGM, she was dubbed "the poor man's LANA TURNER." It was a rather unfair assessment since MGM gave Lana all the plum roles, and Mary Beth got her hand-me-downs. But still, Mary Beth had great comic chops, and no one played bitchy, hard-boiled blondes as well as she. Despite her beauty and talent, she never managed to get out of B-pictures. She did have small parts in great films like The Women (1939) and The Ox-Bow Incident (1942). She played the good girl as often as she played the bad girl, but when she played bad....you were in for a treat. Her pouty lips, snappy dialogue, and petulant attitude lit up many a lackluster production. This week, we celebrate her as our Star of the Month. Dexter Morgan is back… but this time, we're diving into his dark origins. Dexter: Original Sin takes us to the late ‘80s / early 90s exploring how young Dexter became the methodical serial killer we know and fear. With Patrick Gibson stepping into the role and Christian Slater as Harry Morgan, does this prequel live up to the legacy of the original series? Or is it just another cash-grab spin-off?In this review, I break down the story, performances, and whether Dexter: Original Sin is worth your time. Let's talk about the Code, the kills, and if this prequel delivers!==========================Lets Connect

To celebrate Tread Perilously's 477th podcast, Erik and Justin finally watch an episode of M*A*S*H -- "That's Show Biz." When a performer on a USO tour comes down with appendicitis, she is airlifted to the 4077th and immediately falls for Hawkeye. Once the rest of her colleagues make it to the M*A*S*H unit, they decided to put on an impromptu show. In a Q&A with The Hollywood Reporter, Fargo and Mad Men star Jon Hamm proclaimed himself a “comic book nerd” and mentioned he is still in talks with both heads of Marvel and DC for roles as well as confirmed that he passed on The Green Lantern saying it was one he “definitely didn't want to do.” Hamm even indicated he has a role selected at Marvel, if the studio does the storyline…and they say they will. The second trailer for The Penguin, the Colin Farrell-led spinoff series of Matt Reeves' The Batman, was released. It highlights more characters who will appear and indicates the Falcones, Gotham's first family of crime, will be at the center of the story. The show also features Salvatore Maroni, played by Clancy Brown, and is led by Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. showrunner Lauren LeFranc. Pixar's Inside Out 2 has jetted past Dune Part 2 to take the crown for top box office take of the year so far. Arthouse film The Bikeriders was highly marketed, but opened at third place with $10 million, and Russell Crowe's horror flick The Exorcism didn't even scrape the bottom of the barrel at a $2.43 million opening. At this point Blade isn't in purgatory…it is officially in development hell. Between the writer's and actor's strikes, actors, writers, and directors being let go and leaving the project, it seems almost impossible that Mahershala Ali's Blade will ever see the light of day. But Hollywood Reporter claims both Ali and Marvel boss Kevin Feige seem like they don't want to drive a stake through the movie, regardless of the lengthy development timeline, obvious loss of money, revolving door of talent, complete changes to the story, and more. M3GAN, the hit horror movie from James Wan's Atomic Monster and Jason Blum's Blumhouse, is getting a spinoff titled SOULM8TE, a thriller that expands the M3GAN universe and is set for release on January 2, 2026. Donald Sutherland, the beloved actor who starred in scores of films such as The Dirty Dozen, MASH, Klute, Animal House, Ordinary People, Pride & Prejudice, and The Hunger Games franchise and won an Emmy for Citizen X, died last Thursday in Miami after a long illness. He was 88. HBO has officially greenlit the first show under DC Studios titled Lanterns. The series has been given an eight episode straight-to-series order by HBO with Chris Mundy serving as showrunner and executive producer. Jonathan Majors is set to star in the revenge thriller Merciless, which is based on an original screenplay by Frank Hannah. Martin Villeneuve, the younger brother of filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, will direct. The film will mark Majors' first role since his third degree assault and harassment conviction earlier this year. Paramount has released the first trailer for Smile 2, the follow up to Parker Finn's 2022 horror hit. The film debuts in theaters on October 18. DC Comics pulled all unpublished cover artwork by artist Francesco Mattina after Adi Granov and Scott Williams accused him of using AI in recently released cover artwork. Williams is the inking partner of publisher and CCO, Jim Lee at DC. A Spaceballs sequel is in development at Amazon MGM Studios. Josh Gad is set to star, and will produce alongside Mel Brooks. Patrick Dempsey has joined the cast of Dexter: Original Sin as a series regular. He is set to portray Aaron Spencer, the Captain of Miami Metro Homicide who has a decades-long relationship with Christian Slater's Harry Morgan. Sources tell Deadline that Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan are in negotiations to star in Season 2 of the Netflix and A24 anthology series Beef. The roles Isaac and Mulligan would be playing were rumored to be for Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, but that ultimately did not come to fruition. Apple Films has acquired the rights to The Wives, an original film produced by A24 and starring Jennifer Lawrence. The Wives is described as a murder mystery inspired by The Real Housewives franchise.

Having never seen this Stanley Kramer/Fred Zinnemann/Carl Foreman CLASSIC, we figured it was time to regain our credibility by watching one of American history's most inspiring westerns- and films. Inherit the Wind (1960) is a fictionalized account of the 1925 Scopes “Monkey Trial," where a local teacher is prosecuted for teaching about human evolution in public school in violation of state law. The film was directed by Stanley Kramer and is based on a play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee. It stars Spencer Tracy as Henry Drummond (patterned after celebrated defense attorney Clarence Darrow), Frederic March as the prosecutor Matthew Harrison Brady (patterned after famous three-time presidential candidate and renowned fundamentalist Christian spokesperson, William Jennings Bryan); Dick York as Bertram T. Cates (patterned after high school science teacher John Scopes), and Gene Kelly as reporter E. K. Hornbeck (patterned after H.L. Mencken). Fans of the TV series M*A*S*H will also enjoy seeing Harry Morgan as the trial judge. The film not only provides a glimpse into the role of religion in public life in American in the 1920s; it also contains important messages about conformism and freedom of thought directed at the McCarthyism of its own era—messages that continue to reverberate today. My guest to talk about Inherit the Wind is film critic Nell Minow (bio here).Timestamps:0.00 Introduction4:52 The era of the Scopes “monkey trial”8:34 The Scopes trial as a “test” case12:25 The decision to exclude evidence of evolution18:40 The later theory of “intelligent design”20:30 Clarence Darrow's classic cross-examination of William Jennings Bryan23:27 Miracle on 34th Street and how courts resolve disputes about faith24:40 The film as a response to the McCarthy era26:14 The verdict and aftermath30:10 The power and methods of the religious right today 34:22 The impact of Inherit the Wind and other “issue movies”37:06 The film's continuing relevanceFurther reading:Austerlitz, Saul, "Rethinking Stanley Kramer: How a message-movie humanist became an auteurist punching bag," Moving Image Source (Aug. 25, 2010)Farrell, John F., Clarence Darrow: Attorney for the Damned (2011)Minow, Nell, “‘An Idea Is a Greater Monument Than a Cathedral': Deciding How We Know What We Know in ‘Inherit the Wind,'” 30 U. Both a loving homage and parody of the classic radio & television police procedural, Dragnet is a fun and engaging good time. Filled with excellent performances and witty banter, it's obvious why this is one of Matt & Todd's favorite films. Starring Dan Aykroyd, Tom Hanks, Christopher Plummer, Jack O'Halloran, Harry Morgan, Dabney Coleman & Alexandra Paul as The Virgin Connie Swail. Directed by Tom Mankiewicz
Dan Ackroyd's misguided take on the copaganda classic Dragnet was a huge disappointment when Dennis saw it in theaters back in 1987. Does his opinion hold up? Or is the film even worse than he remembers? Should he have talked Mary out of covering this at all? But at least we finally get to cover a Tom Hanks movie for the show, right? Starring Dan Ackroyd, Tom Hanks, Christopher Plummer, Dabney Coleman, Alexandra Paul, and Harry Morgan. Written by Dan Ackroyd, Alan Zweibel, and Tom Mankiewicz. Directed by Tom Mankiewicz.
Time for the 9th round of “Rerun Forensics” on Yeah Uh Huh with Lisa, Phil, and Aaron! This time, we're revisiting one of the most revered television shows in history, MASH! Way back in episode 4 Lisa and I remembered some of our favorite episodes and characters in the series' history. But in this installment we break down a single episode. Namely, "The General Flipped at Dawn", checking in as episode one of its' third season. This episode featured the first appearance of Harry Morgan as General Steele, a regular army zealot with more problems than immediately meets the eye. The very following year, Morgan would return permanently as Colonel Sherman T. Potter in an iconic turn. Our dear friend Tango returns for this special episode and helps us try and understand the cultural differences that often make television from this era difficult to watch. #MASH #TheGeneralFlippedAtDawn #GeneralSteele #JamieFarr #AlanAlda #LarryGebhart #LorettaSwitt #LarryLinville #MalibuCreekPark YUH Theme by David T and Mojo 3 https://www.amazon.com/Insanity-Sobriety-Blues-David-Mojo3/dp/B091N8BJNB Suicide is Painless by Johnny Mandel https://open.spotify.com/track/1OEQ25mOQtIAFIIA3WRL4x?si=522407eecd394611 Watch The General Flipped at Dawn on Amazon Prime https://www.amazon.com/M-S-H-Season-3/dp/B07K3N25WN Yeah Uh Huh on Facebook https://facebook.com/YeahUhHuhPod Yeah Uh Huh on Twitter https://twitter.com/YeahUhHuhPod Yeah Uh Huh on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/7pS9l716ljEQLeMMxwihoS?si=27bd15fb26ed46aa Yeah Uh Huh on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/yeah-uh-huh/id1565097611 --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/yeah-uh-huh/message
This Christmas season on After Lunch - like with the last couple of years - we're going to be re-running a bunch of episodes from Michael's old Sleigh Bell Cinema podcast. This is going to be an especially busy year though, because we're running discussions of what we call Holiday Spirit movies. Unlike Tangential Christmas movies, these are undeniably about the Holiday Season, but without a lot of fantastical elements like Santa or his elves and reindeer. If there's magic, it's going to be subtle or ambiguous. There are a lot of these movies though - it's easily the biggest category that we talked about on Sleigh Bell Cinema - so we're going to be running an episode a day for the next couple of weeks. To kick this off, we want to start with a movie that Rob and Michael keep referring back to. In fact, it's come up in the last three episodes on the show. From 1949, it's Holiday Affair starring Janet Leigh, Robert Mitchum, and Wendell Corey. And featuring Colonel Potter himself, Harry Morgan, in a small role. If you consider California penal code sections 484207, A597, and 217, theft, kidnapping, cruelty to animals and attempted murder something to laugh about, then you agree that Dragnet is a 1987 crown jewel of comedy. Tom Hanks before TOM HANKS is always a celluloid treasure to behold.P.A.G.A.N. People Against Goodness And Normalcy. Now I'm not saying that I subscribe to this acronym, but I'm not saying I don't either. Dan Akroyd and Tom Hanks team up in this buddy cop comedy. The stacked cast also gifts us with Christopher Plummer's maniacal laugh, as well as Dabney Coleman and his sibilant lisp. As Joe Friday and Pep Streebek, they're hot on the trail of this cult. Securing information on said cult by introducing Emil Muzz's balls to a desk drawer, they end up at a P.A.G.A.N. ceremony saving the virgin Connie Swail (I was waiting for Akroyd to call her an ignorant slut most of this movie). Let's not forget the nail biting battle with an enormous drug laden snake that ensues during the daring rescue. Star Wars anyone? Don't want to give away the BIG climax! That's all you get here.Enid Borden 4-eva.

It was the Dragnet Christmas story that kept on giving."The Big Little Jesus" first debuted on the Dragnet radio program that preceded the television show. "The Big Little Jesus" first ran on December 22, 1953. It was re-broadcast on December 21, 1954 and December 25, 1956. It made its television debut on December 24, 1953, as the seventeenth episode of the show's third season. It starred Jack Webb, Ben Alexander, Harry Bartell, Joe Carioca Jr., James Griffith, Ralph Moody, Herb Vigran, Walter Sande, and Billy Chapin. In the show's successor series, Dragnet 1967, it was redone and re-christened "The Christmas Story." That aired on December 21, 1967, and starred Jack Webb and Harry Morgan, and then practically the same cast! Bartell, Moody, and Vigran return, along with newcomers Bobby Troup, Byron Morrow, William Challee, Fernando Vásquez, Craig Huxley, and The Brady Bunch's Barry Williams. It's all about a missing statue of the Christ child that goes away from its manger right on the eve of ... well, Christmas Eve. We also review "The Big .22" Rifle for Christmas." It's the seventh episode of Dragnet's second season, and it aired on December 18, 1952. Like "The Big Little Jesus," it was repeatedly aired in the radio version of the show as well. It was first broadcast December 22, 1949, and then re-recorded and put out again on December 21, 1950. That second version also aired on December 20, 1951. It was re-recorded a third time and aired again on December 21, 1952. Versions also ran on December 20, 1955 and March 20, 1956.The television version stars Jack Webb, Herbert Ellis, John Martin, June Whitley Taylor, Sammy Ogg, Virginia Christine, Renny McEvoy, and Olan Soule. This is a tragic, gutting Dragnet Christmas tale about a gift that goes awry for two families. It's well-written, gripping, and not funny at all. But it gets at the themes of loss and forgiveness and family far better than its sillier counterpart.Listen to Áine and Kevin carol on about twenty dollar gold pieces, M*A*S*H, Áine's jealousy of Julie London, and Jack Webb's podcasting career.Merry Christmas to all those who celebrate, and happy holidays to you all!Follow us on the usual social media suspects:FacebookTwitterInstagramAnd send your chess moves to mysterytomepodcast@gmail.com.Mystery to Me is a production of Mystery Sheet LLC.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Enjoy two free mystery episodes of Mystery In the Air w/ Peter Lorre A) 8/28/47 Beyond Good and Evil B) 9/4/47 The Mask of Medusa Peter Lorre had always wanted to star in his own dramatic radio program so when The Abbott & Costello Show took its 1947 summer vacation, NBC and advertising agency William Esty & Company, granted his wish. They turned over the microphones to Lorre as star of thirteen episodes of a chiller series titled Mystery in the Air. Cut from the cloth of tales woven by the imaginations of some of the most famous authors in history, Mystery in the Air, brilliantly brought horror classics to life, including “The Telltale Heart,” “The Marvelous Barastro,” “The Lodger,” “The Horla,” “The Black Cat”, “Crime and Punishment” and “The Mask of Medusa”. Lorre delivered tour de force performances of men tortured and driven by dark impulses. The supporting casts were the best in the business, including Agnes Moorehead, Peggy Webber, Russell Thorson, John Brown, Hans Conried, Howard Culver, Jane Morgan, Luis Van Rooten, Herb Butterfield and Ben Wright. The announcer was Henry Morgan, who we would all know later as Harry Morgan from TV's Dragnet and M*A*S*H. Sponsors were Camel Cigarettes and Prince Albert pipe tobacco. The series was produced and directed by Don Bernard and Cal Kuhl. Mystery in the Air was a collection of dark and compelling stories culled from the four corners of literature. Unfortunately for Peter Lorre fans, the series did not continue in the fall following its initial summer cycle.

In this weeks episode we talk weird measurements and the classic film noir Dark City! Dark City is a 1950 American film noir crime film starring Charlton Heston in his Hollywood debut, and featuring Lizabeth Scott, Viveca Lindfors, Dean Jagger, Don DeFore, Ed Begley, Jack Webb and Harry Morgan. It was produced by Hal B. Wallis and directed by William Dieterle. This was Heston's first appearance in a professional film production, following his participation in David Bradley's amateur Peer Gynt (1941) and semi-professional Julius Caesar (1950). In later interviews, he would refer to Dark City as "definitely not an 'A' picture, but a pretty good 'B'." Webb and Morgan would go on to famously co-star in the popular police drama television series Dragnet. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/speakeasy-noircast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/speakeasy-noircast/support

Harry Morgan of Ernest Hemingway's 1937 novel is probably the worst protagonist ever. But there's possibly more to this novel, which I'd rank as Hemingway's worst. Rebecca Johnston of the Florida Hemingway Society joins me to discuss the positives in this story of Depression-era Key West I may have overlooked.
