Book Vs Movie: “Harper Valley PTA"The 1968 Song Vs the 1978 Movie (really!)(It's one of our favorite episodes from the past!) The song was written by Tom T. Hall and performed by country singer Jeannie C. Riley in 1968. The story about a “widowed bride” who is slut-shamed by her daughter's junior high school PTA (Parents Teachers Advisory) and gives a takedown at a meeting that is spectacular in its shade and incisiveness was one of the first feminist anthems and managed to become a number one hit in the U.S. on both the pop and country charts. (Past episode, Dolly Parton did the same in 1980 for 9 to 5!)The 1978 movie is an R-rated cuckoo bananas production starring Barbara Eden (a stone-cold fox!) as Stella Johnson, who exacts a Porky's style revenge on the local yokels who dare to take her on. She is also wooed by an equally sexy Ronny Cox and is teamed up with Nanette Fabray in this film that played in drive-in theaters in 1978 and made millions. It features nudity, wrap dresses, elephants, revenge porn, makeovers, and a helicopter proposal. So, between the song and the movie--which did we prefer? Have a listen and find out!
For marine biologist, writer, and lay theologian Rachel Jordan, the ocean has never just been a backdrop—it's been a living metaphor for her relationship with God. Raised in a Christian household, Rachel's wonder at tide pools and the mysteries of the deep developed alongside her budding faith. She explains how the intrigue of peering into tiny, brimming tide pools mirrored her fascination with glimpses of God's character: “There was something vast and impressive that laid beyond, that I wanted to explore.” Just as the tide pools hinted at whole worlds awaiting discovery, Rachel found that both faith and science propelled her deeper: “Being a Christian has propelled me further into a desire to understand science ... and being a scientist has, I believe, made me a better Christian.” Rachel may study the ocean's wonders, but her path has been anything but fearless. “I've had this recurring nightmare ... of getting eaten by sharks ... I was just terrified of it,” she confesses. And yet, her marine biology career meant close encounters with those notorious creatures were not just possible, but sometimes necessary. What's remarkable is how God met her in those moments of dread—not by removing the fear, but by transforming it. As she recounts, “The beauty is that God took this thing that I was afraid of and converted it to open-mouthed wonder.” Rachel's transparency normalizes fear as a companion to growth, whether learning to dive or facing daunting new callings. Her encouragement? “It's okay to feel [fear]; it might be something that God uses in your story to do something really big and to show you more of who he is.” Lessons of Grief and Hope from the Coral Reefs Perhaps nowhere does Rachel blend her scientific vocation and spiritual conviction more poignantly than in her stewardship of endangered corals. She describes the “magic castles” of Dry Tortugas National Park—towering, endangered pillar corals—where she devoted herself to preservation efforts. Witnessing the corals' decline from disease was, for Rachel and her fellow scientists, “tragic and deeply impactful.” Yet, as a follower of Christ, Rachel finds hope in the heartbreak. Not only does she grieve in community, but she sees loss through the lens of biblical resurrection. She connects the “white skeleton bony structures” of dead corals to Ezekiel's vision of dry bones: if God can bring those bones to life, can't he also restore coral reefs one day? For Rachel, loss becomes an invitation to hope: “All of creation is eventually going to be restored, remade ... I just wonder what he's going to do next.” Divine Lessons from Buddy Dives and Seahorses Diving, for all its wonder, is fraught with risk, which is why marine biologists always practice “buddy diving”—entrusting their lives to a partner in the depths. For Rachel, this is a living parable: “God is our ultimate dive buddy ... he's not only capable of rescuing us in danger, but he promises to never leave or forsake us.” Other creatures—even a seahorse named Mr. Snuggles—have revealed to her the joy of relationship, not just provision. “I want to, like Mr. Snuggles, draw close to him and just sort of curl up with him and hang out together.” Scripture: A Dive Site Brimming with Life What better metaphor for the Bible, Rachel muses, than a vibrant dive site—unchanging in position but always full of surprise, beauty, and life? “When I read God's word ... there's always something new to discover.” It's a place to keep returning with fresh awe and an explorer's heart. The Deep Calls to Deep Whether or not you'll ever strap on a snorkel, Rachel's conversation is an invitation: to see the world as shot through with the beauty and presence of its Maker, to find him not only in safe harbor but also in the open, sometimes scary waters of life, and to trust that every loss and fear can be met—and even redeemed—by the God who made oceans and corals... and calls each of us out into the deep. MEET RACHEL JORDAN Rachel G. Jordan is a professional marine biologist and lay theologian. A self-professed Jesus-loving coral nerd, she was raised in Idaho and has since traveled the globe chasing her passion for faith and science. She has an MS in marine biology and ecology from James Cook University (Australia), a BS in ecology from Seattle Pacific University (USA), and a certification in biblical studies from Bodenseehof Bible School (Germany). In addition to working as a coral biologist for the US National Park Service, Rachel has worked in marine aquaculture research, organic chemistry laboratories, veterinary research facilities, the pet industry, and a museum. When not diving or writing, she can be found reading C.S. Lewis, growing wildflowers, and exploring creation with her husband. More at https://rachelgjordan.com/ MORE ABOUT “IF THE OCEAN HAS A SOUL” The ocean is filled with scientific discoveries―and God's presence. For marine biologist Rachel Jordan, both science and Scripture are means of knowing creation and Creator. In If the Ocean Has a Soul, Rachel considers the natural world through a spiritual lens, meshing marine biology with biblical truths in a keen and current take on faith and science. With engaging storytelling and deep knowledge of the Bible, she asks and answers questions like: How can Christians reconcile religion and science when the two seem opposed? What do suffering and death teach us about the character of Jesus? How do we care for the environment when there seems to be little hope for repair? What do the ocean and its sea creatures, specifically, reveal about God? In these pages, Rachel recounts fascinating aquatic phenomena alongside the sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic stories of animals she has known. You'll lose yourself in the shadows of an underwater labyrinth; hear spiritual wisdom from a great-grandmother coral the size of a Volkswagen Beetle; and fall in love with Porky, the pudgy porcupinefish greeting visitors at the Windjammer shipwreck. And along the way, you'll see how the promise of restoration unfolds in both physical and spiritual ways. Rachel's thoughtful scientific and theological insights encourage us to know the Creator of the sea and everything in it. Welcome back, custmers! I recently took a vacation from the video store to go on a cruise with my wife. I've had cruises on the brain ever since, so what better time to recommend some of my favorite films that take place on ships! OVERBOARD (1987)Handyman and single-father Dean Proffitt sees an opportunity to get even with a pompous heiress named Joanna after an accident leaves her with amnesia. Dean takes advantage of the woman's lack of memory and convinces her that she is his wife and the mother of his four children. What starts out as a simple bit of revenge gets complicated as relationships are formed… and broken. Starring real life couple Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn as Dean and Annie, with appearances from Edward Herrmann, Roddy McDowall, and Mike Hagerty. CABIN BOY (1994)In this utterly bizarre comedy starring Chris Elliott, Nathan Mayweather is a spoiled and tone-deaf “fancy lad” who accidentally boards the wrong ship and finds himself sailing the seas with a grizzled crew of career fishermen. The plot is silly, the jokes are weird, and the comedy is abstract. One moment cabin boy Mayweather is talking to imaginary cupcakes and in the next, he's being rescued from the depths of the ocean by Choki — half-man, half-shark. Cabin Boy was such a box office failure that director Adan Resnick literally never directed another film. I love this movie and my wife will get in her car and leave the house when I watch it. You'll have to decide for yourself if it's for you.THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE (1972)If you've ever wondered what's the worst that could happen while sailing on a cruise ship, you'll soon find out. Due to a series of unfortunate events, the unstable ship is knocked over by a 90-foot-tall wave. Passengers must work together to find a way out of the upside-down cruise ship before it sinks to the bottom of the ocean. This multi-Academy Award winner features an all-star cast including Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Shelly Winters, Red Buttons, Carol Lynley, Roddy McDowall, Jack Albertson, and more. CITY HUNTER (1993)Jackie Chan is known for his wacky action flicks, and this may be the wackiest of them all. In City Hunter, Chan plays Ryu, a private detective hired to find a missing woman. Ryu and his assistant Kaori track the woman to a cruise ship and follow her there, only to discover the ship is being hijacked by terrorists. Ryu is the ultimate ladies man — they love him and he loves them. City Hunter is part comedy and part action. It's like if they remade Porky's and added machine gun wielding terrorists who constantly mow down passengers in cold blood. Is this film for everybody? No. But is it for anybody? Also, maybe not. Jackie Chan said City Hunter is the least favorite film he ever worked on, which made me pick up a copy and add it to the video store's library.Usually when my wife and I go on cruises the only thing I worry about is them running out of pudding or margaritas. After watching these I'll be keeping an eye out for terrorists, gigantic waves, and terrorists. If any of those things happen I'll cross my fingers and hope for amnesia. Skynet AI 2029: James Cameron's The Terminator If you grew up in the 1980s, you were living in a decade that would be controlled by raunchy teen sex comedies (Porky's, My Tutor, Private Lessons), John Hughes (The Breakfast Club, 16 Candles, Ferris Bueller's Day Off), and the emergence of straight to video. However there was one genre that stood above all others and would forever alter the output of Hollywood. Action films had always been a part of Hollywood, however the 1980s would unleash the talents of Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis, as well as lesser box office talents such as Steven Seagal, Jean Claude Van Damme, and the continuing presence of 70s holdover, Chuck Norris. One name would stand above all others, however. Inhabiting the title role of the 1984 B-Movie, Low-Budget Classic, The Terminator, Director James Cameron would establish Austrian-born, seven-time Mr. Olympia Arnold Schwarzenegger, as - possibly - the greatest Action-Star to ever grace the Big Screen. The Terminator would change cinema and introduce both actor and director as formidable and genre defining talents. This week Mr. Chavez & I dive into the world of Artificial Intelligence and discuss one of the greatest Science Fiction films ever made. What are the lessons we should have learned from Cameron's film? What did we miss? How far away are we from Skynet becoming self-aware? There's a whole lot to unpack and we're diving right into all of it. This was an exciting and wonderfully joyous trip back to the 80s and a film that greatly defined both our youths, the decade, and the evolving world of Cinema. We present our Hardbodies/10/Spring Break Review! When people think of iconic American cinema, they rarely jump straight to beachside hijinks, topless party montages, and clueless middle-aged men trying to reclaim their youth—but perhaps they should. Films like 10 (1979), Hardbodies (1984), and Spring Break (1983) are part of a uniquely 1980s phenomenon: the sex comedy boom, where the combination of sun, skin, and slapstick served as both low-budget goldmines and cultural time capsules. Though 10, starring Dudley Moore and Bo Derek, predates the others and leaned more into adult romantic fantasy than outright teen farce, it planted the seeds for the genre's obsession with unattainable beauty, aging masculinity, and self-aware hedonism. But it was Hardbodies that truly shifted the tone, ushering in the rise of the raunchy, youth-driven beach comedy that would define a generation of VHS rentals and late-night cable rewatches.Hardbodies wasn't the first to feature babes and bros on the sand, but it was the blueprint that codified the formula: old dudes hire a young ladies' man to teach them how to pick up women in Malibu, resulting in a series of increasingly absurd, sexualized, and tone-deaf adventures. It's pure wish fulfillment, soaked in neon tans and synth-heavy soundtracks, but it also became the prototype for films like Spring Break, Private Resort, and Hot Dog… The Movie. Its unapologetic objectification and throwaway plotting weren't accidental—they were the selling point. And for better or worse, Hardbodies helped shift sex comedy from teen coming-of-age (Porky's, Fast Times) to pure, exploitative fantasy. That shift matters, because it marked the moment when these films stopped pretending to be about growing up and started reveling in never growing up at all. The film legacy of Hardbodies isn't about quality or prestige—it's about influence, formula, and the way it captured a certain type of American escapism that filmmakers are still riffing on (or reacting against) today.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Animation. Directed by Pete Browngardt in his feature directorial debut, it is the first fully-animated and theatrically released film in the Looney Tunes franchise based on entirely original material. The film is spun-off from the Looney Tunes Cartoons series developed by Browngardt and features the voices of Eric Bauza, Candi Milo, and Peter MacNicol. The film follows Daffy Duck and Porky Pig as they try to save Earth from an alien scheme. In 2019, while working on Looney Tunes Cartoons, Browngardt was asked if he had any ideas for a new Looney Tunes feature film. Browngardt eventually settled on the premise of a "sci-fi B-movie from the '50s," starring Daffy and Porky. He took inspiration from features of the era and shorts starring the cartoon duo. Warner Bros. Animation, alongside several vendors, provided the animation for the film, of which its character designs were modelled after the style of animator Bob Clampett and Tex Avery. Joshua Moshier, who previously worked on Looney Tunes Cartoons, composed the film's score.Upon its announcement in 2021, The Day the Earth Blew Up was originally set to be released on HBO Max and the "ACME Night" block on Cartoon Network. The film however premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 11, 2024 and had a limited release in the United States on December 13, 2024 by Ketchup Entertainment, before expanding wide on March 14, 2025. The film received positive reviews from critics, and has grossed $5.6 million worldwide against a budget of $15 million.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

We go from one end of the spectrum to the other this week on BEHIND THE LENS as we take a look at writer/director Atom Egoyan's dramatic new thriller SEVEN VEILS and everyone's favorite (and looney) pig and duck, Porky and Daffy, in writer/director Peter Browngardt's feature animated directorial debut LOONEY TUNES: THE DAY THE EARTH BLEW UP. First up today is my exclusive interview with one of my longtime favorite directors – ATOM EGOYAN. Written &mps; Directed by Atom, SEVEN VEILS stars Amanda Seyfried who reunites with Atom after their 2015 film Chloe, as well as Rebecca Liddiard, Douglas Smith, Mark O'Brien, Vinessa Antoine, Ambur Braid, Michael Kupfer-Radecky. Premised on the biblical tale of Salome, which has been told in countless ways over the years, most notably as a 19th-century opera by Richard Strauss and written by Oscar Wilde, Atom has taken his love for the tale which he has directed on the stage numerous times since 1996 and now explores what a production of Salome would mean in our current culture. This led him to write SEVEN VEILS about a remount of Salome that he filmed at the same time the opera was being performed on stage by the Canadian Opera Company in 2023, using the opera singers from Salome in the film. Switching gears now, we go from the seductive and sensual to sarcasm, satire, slapstick, and pure unadulterated joy with Porky Pig and Daffy Duck in LOONEY TUNES: THE DAY THE EARTH BLEW UP and my exclusive conversation with writer/director/animator PETER BROWNGARDT. Listen as Peter talks about animation and dialogue going hand in hand aka what came first the pig or the duck egg and working with 11 writers/animators to develop the emotion through drawing, dialogue and voicing, the classic hand-drawn visuals, paying homage to the past – including many classic films – while adding some contemporary notes, melding genres, music and score, getting a greenlight from Warners to make the film, and of course Peter's own learning curve with his first feature after hundreds of Looney Tunes shorts. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

This week, Josh and Drusilla discuss Michael Mann's troubled, previously hard-to-see The Keep. From wiki: “The Keep is a 1983 supernatural horror film written and directed by Michael Mann and starring Scott Glenn, Gabriel Byrne, Jürgen Prochnow, Alberta Watson, and Ian McKellen. Set in Romania during World War II, it follows a group of Nazi soldiers who unleash a malevolent supernatural force after setting up camp in an ancient stone fortress in the Carpathian Mountains. It is an adaptation of the 1981 novel of the same title by American writer F. Paul Wilson.[5] The musical score was composed by Tangerine Dream.”Also discussed: Wolf's Hole (1987), Penance by Eliza Clark, more Peter Greenaway with The Draughtsman's Contract, Philomena Cunk, Taskmaster, The Devils, Ian McKellen, Gabriel Byrne, tv versions of Ace Ventura or The Breakfast Club, Miami Vice, Sorcerer, Porky's, and more.
