In this episode, Bruce reflects on Acts 1:8 and the call to be witnesses of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not given only to comfort, guide, and transform us personally. He is given so that Christ may become visible through our lives. Before the disciples began their mission, Jesus told them to wait, not because they lacked information, but because they needed power.Bruce reminds us that witnessing is not only about speaking to crowds or having all the right answers. It often happens in ordinary life, through integrity, patience, kindness, readiness, and the natural sharing of what God has done in us.Where is the Holy Spirit calling you to be a witness today?

He is given so that we might become more available to God and His mission.Bruce reminds us that mission always begins with God. Long before we ask what God wants us to do, He has already been preparing us through our experiences, gifts, weaknesses, joys, disappointments, and seasons of waiting. This devotional invites you to ask a deeper question: am I becoming the kind of person who is available to God if He chooses to call me?What is the Holy Spirit asking of you today?

Rosemary reminds us that faith must take flesh through works of love, mercy, service, and compassion. This devotional invites us to ask what God has placed in our hands today. We may not be able to do everything, but we can do something. A word of encouragement, a prayer, a meal, a visit, a smile, or a simple act of mercy can become a sign that God has not forgotten anyone.Who is the one person God is asking you to notice today?

She did not know the whole plan, yet she trusted God with the next step.Bruce reminds us that living in step with the Holy Spirit often means saying yes before we fully understand where the journey will lead. The Holy Spirit works through quiet faithfulness, daily obedience, humble service, and the ordinary moments where we choose to surrender again.Where is God inviting you to say yes today?

But the question is not whether we feel fear. The question is whether fear becomes the voice that directs our lives.Bruce reminds us that the Holy Spirit does not always remove the challenge in front of us. Often, He strengthens us to face it.This devotional invites you to ask God for the courage to remain faithful, to keep praying, to forgive, to trust, to speak when needed, and to say yes to whatever God is asking.Where do you need the courage of the Holy Spirit today?

The Church has always been made up of people with different gifts, cultures, personalities, experiences, and ways of expressing their love for God. Yet in Christ, we are one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of all.Bruce reminds us that unity is not something we create by human effort. It is a gift from God that we are called to protect. This devotional invites you to ask where you may be called to seek peace, forgive, listen more deeply, and become a person of communion.Where is God asking you to strengthen the bond of peace today?

In this episode, Bruce reflects on Romans 13:12–14 and what it means to put on the Lord Jesus Christ in ordinary daily life.Holiness is not only about what happens in church or during prayer. It is found in the small moments: how we respond to mistakes, whether we tell the truth, whether we take responsibility, and whether we choose patience, humility, kindness, and love when life does not go as planned.Through a funny and honest story about breaking something in someone else's home, Bruce reminds us that holiness is often revealed in the everyday choices no one else may notice.Where is God inviting you to put on Christ today?

    One Body, Many Gifts

In this episode, Bruce reflects on 1 Corinthians 12:4–7 and the truth that every Christian has been given gifts by the Holy Spirit for the common good.God does not give every person the same gift or ask every person to serve in the same way. Some people encourage, some lead, some organize, some pray, some give generously, and some quietly serve behind the scenes. Each gift matters because each gift has been entrusted by God.Bruce reminds us that comparison can distract us from using what God has already placed within us. The Church does not need us to become someone else. It needs us to become fully the person God created us to be.What gift has God placed within you, and how is He asking you to use it for others?

It can be difficult to keep going when the cost is real and the response is small. But Rosemary reminds us that nothing done in love is hidden from God.This devotional invites us to examine our hearts, let go of resentment, and ask the Holy Spirit to purify our motives so that we can remain faithful, even when no one sees.Where do you need God's grace to keep serving without needing applause?

Some things can begin to dominate us.Bruce invites us to ask a searching question: what is beginning to control my life? This devotional reminds us that self-control is not simply willpower or personal discipline. In this episode of Living in Step with the Holy Spirit, Bruce Downes reflects on Romans 13:12–14 and St Paul's call to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ.”Holiness can sometimes seem like something extraordinary, reserved for saints, religious people, or those whose lives appear far removed from our own. But Scripture tells a different story. God calls every one of us to holiness.Bruce reminds us that holiness is most often lived quietly in ordinary life. It is lived in our homes, workplaces, marriages, friendships, responsibilities, conversations, and daily decisions. It is lived when we choose patience instead of irritation, honesty instead of convenience, kindness instead of criticism, generosity instead of self-interest, and forgiveness instead of resentment. To “put on Christ” means allowing His character to become visible in us. It means allowing His humility, mercy, compassion, purity, obedience, and love to shape the way we live. The Holy Spirit does not simply teach us about Jesus. He forms Jesus within us.Today's invitation is to make the daily choice to put on Christ, not in some distant future when life feels easier, but today, in the ordinary moments of your life.

We choose how we respond, whether we forgive, whether we hold on to resentment, whether fear or trust guides us, and whether we listen to the Holy Spirit or to the desires of the flesh.Bruce reminds us that the fruit of the Spirit is not produced by sheer determination. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control grow in us as we remain connected to God and surrender more fully to the Holy Spirit.Where do you need to say today, “Holy Spirit, come. In this episode of Living in Step with the Holy Spirit, Bruce Downes reflects on Psalm 13 and the painful experience of disappointment in the spiritual life. There are times when we pray and the answer does not seem to come. We ask for healing, guidance, restoration, breakthrough, or change, and the situation remains the same. In those moments, disappointment can begin to speak. It asks: Has God forgotten me? Does He see what I am carrying? Is He listening?Bruce reminds us that these questions do not mean our faith is weak. When we open the Scriptures, we discover that many of God's faithful servants asked the same kinds of questions. David begins Psalm 13 with the honest cry, “How long, O Lord?”He does not pretend. He does not hide his disappointment from God. He brings it directly to Him, and in doing so, he keeps the relationship alive. The Holy Spirit does not invite us into a relationship built on pretense. He teaches us to pray honestly, to bring sorrow into the light, and to keep trusting God's steadfast love even when His timing remains a mystery.Today's invitation is to bring your disappointment before God and allow the Holy Spirit to keep your heart open.

In this episode of Living in Step with the Holy Spirit, Bruce Downes reflects on 1 Thessalonians 5:16–22 and St Paul's instruction: “Do not quench the Spirit.”This is a sobering reminder that while the Holy Spirit cannot be destroyed, His work within us can be resisted. His promptings can be ignored. His invitations can be delayed. His voice can become harder to hear, not because He has stopped speaking, but because we have stopped responding.Bruce reminds us that this usually happens subtly. We ignore a prompting to pray. We postpone forgiveness. We rationalise away generosity. We avoid a conviction about something that needs to change. Over time, the heart becomes less responsive.Paul also tells us to “test everything” and “hold fast to what is good.” Living in step with the Holy Spirit is not about chasing every feeling or impression. It is about becoming open and discerning, willing to listen, wise enough to test, and humble enough to obey.Today's invitation is to pay attention to the small promptings of the Holy Spirit and respond before they are pushed aside.

In this episode of Living in Step with the Holy Spirit, Bruce Downes reflects on Luke 10:41–42 and the story of Mary and Martha.Martha welcomes Jesus into her home. She wants to serve Him well. Her intentions are good, and her love for Jesus is real. But somewhere in the middle of serving Jesus, she stops being present to Jesus.Bruce reminds us that this can easily happen in our own lives. We may not deliberately turn away from God. We may not consciously decide to neglect prayer or ignore the Holy Spirit. But responsibilities increase, demands multiply, schedules become full, and the pace of life accelerates. Before long, we can remain busy without remaining attentive to God.Jesus does not shame Martha. He speaks her name with tenderness and invites her back to the one thing necessary. The Christian life does involve activity, service, work, sacrifice, and care for others. But the question is whether our activity is flowing from relationship with God or slowly replacing it.Today's invitation is to pause, return to Jesus, and allow the Holy Spirit to reorder the heart.

In this episode of Living in Step with the Holy Spirit, Bruce Downes reflects on 1 Kings 19:11–12 and the powerful moment when Elijah encounters God in “a sound of sheer silence.”After a great spiritual victory, Elijah finds himself exhausted, afraid, discouraged, and alone. God leads him to Mount Horeb, the mountain of encounter. A great wind tears through the mountains, but the Lord is not in the wind. An earthquake shakes the ground, but the Lord is not in the earthquake. A fire blazes, but the Lord is not in the fire. Then comes the silence.Bruce reminds us that we often look for God in the dramatic, the spectacular, or the unmistakable. Yet the Holy Spirit often speaks in quieter ways, through a gentle conviction, a growing peace, a scripture that suddenly speaks into our life, or a prompting that returns again and again. In a noisy world filled with constant information, screens, voices, and pressure, we can miss the quiet voice of God. The Holy Spirit does not usually compete with noise. He invites us into stillness, where we can become more attentive and receptive.Today's invitation is to make space for silence and pray:Holy Spirit, quiet my heart and help me recognize Your voice.

He ran to Eli three times before Eli realised that it was the Lord calling Samuel. This story reminds us that listening to God is something we learn. Many Christians believe God speaks, but fewer feel confident that they would recognise His voice. Our lives are full of noise, work, responsibility, social media, distractions, fears, opinions, desires, and disappointments. Yet beneath all of that, the Holy Spirit continues to speak.Bruce reminds us that God often speaks through gentle promptings, not dramatic announcements. He may speak through a conviction in prayer, an invitation to trust, a challenge to forgive, or a quiet sense that a particular decision is right or wrong.Today's prayer is the prayer Samuel learned to pray:Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.

We keep going, meet responsibilities, pray, serve, and show up, yet beneath the surface our hearts may feel weary, flat, discouraged, or drained. The vision of Ezekiel is deliberately confronting. The valley is full of bones, and they are very dry. Humanly speaking, there is no future there. But God asks Ezekiel, “Can these bones live?”That question is not only about bones. It is about hope. It is about whether the Holy Spirit can still bring life to the places we have quietly given up on.Bruce reminds us that the bones did not restore themselves and the valley did not fix itself. Today marks the beginning of Bruce Downes' new devotional series, Living in Step with the Holy Spirit. In this episode, Bruce reflects on Acts 2:37–39, where Peter speaks to the crowd after Pentecost and declares that they will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. He tells them:“The promise is for you.”This is where the journey begins.Pentecost was not only a powerful moment in the life of the early Church. It was the beginning of a new way of living. Through the Holy Spirit, God draws His people into a relationship so intimate that His own life dwells within them.Bruce reminds us that many Christians spend years trying to live the Christian life by their own strength. We believe in God, pray, serve, and try to grow closer to Him, but often we still carry the quiet assumption that everything depends on our own effort. But the Christian life is not simply a life lived for God. It is a life lived with God.The same Holy Spirit who came upon the apostles, sustained the martyrs, inspired the saints, and transformed ordinary men and women throughout history, is still at work today. Before we learn to recognise His voice, discern His promptings, or follow His lead, we must first believe that this promise was never intended only for someone else. The promise is for you.Watch today's devotional here: [BruceDownes.org] To receive the Living in Step with the Holy Spirit eBook, visit: [https://brucedownes.org/ec/liswths_ebook/]
