Bitterness is an ugly look on anyone, doesn’t matter who you are or what you do. We all know that being bitter doesn’t add any positives to our lives but we are still so quick to turn sour. Instead of taking an introspective look at why we’re feeling this way, we’d rather project our turbulent emotions to those we feel did us wrong. The worst part about being bitter is that it usually affects us much more than the people we’re bitter about and before you know it, you’ve spiralled into a rabbit hole of toxicity. Do not overlook self-care, you are not a machine! I can’t stress this highly enough because in this day and age, people misconstrue the meaning of productivity and equate it to working yourself into the ground. I have been vocal in the past about how infuriating people who perpetuate toxic productivity can be, always sharing captions that promote an unhealthy standard of living for the sake of ‘the grind’. Self-care is just as important as your 9-5 shift or any other activity you partake in. Learn to make time for yourself and start prioritising healing and reflection. I would strongly argue that almost every single issue that Kenya faces today has ties to colonialism, that is not to take personal accountability from local politicians and authorities who are not doing their job as is required. This personal accountability applies to the police force as well, as it’s no secret that the Kenyan public is increasingly becoming disenfranchised with law enforcement. There have been dozens of deaths during the government-imposed curfew as a result of police brutality, unfortunately, cases of citizens being subjected to excessive force are nothing new. To understand the issue, we must first trace the colonial roots of law enforcement in Kenya and how classism carries on its horrid legacy. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/africa/kenya-coronavirus-curfew-crackdown-death-toll/2020/04/15/740a8c4e-79be-11ea-a311-adb1344719a9_story.html https://theconversation.com/why-violence-is-a-hallmark-of-kenyan-policing-and-what-needs-to-change-139878 https://www.change.org/p/the-president-of-kenya-justice-for-samuel-maina The post EP 40: Classism and The Police appeared first on Can I Preach?.

I would like to stress that in an institution such as law enforcement where each individual has a great amount of power, one “mistake” is a stain on the entire force. Furthermore, I am aware that there are more good police officers than bad ones, but how many people will have to die before proper changes are implemented to ensure that foul individuals never get the chance to serve in law enforcement in the first place? It has undergone drastic changes in recent years with the advancement of technology and it would seem that from the outside, we as a collective have come to accept the fact that we are constantly under watch. I mean, what could be wrong with wanting to make sure that everything you do is perfect? Well it turns out that the quest for perfectionism is a poisoned chalice, drink from it and you’ll expose yourself to a vast sequence of personal degradation, that will only push you further away from the person you are trying to be. Personality traits reflect people’s characteristics, how they behave and communicate both physically and emotionally. Usually, we as a society tend to group people into one of two main distinctions, extroverts and introverts. Extroverts are people who are energised when they are surrounded by others, they constantly feed off of social interactions and engagements. Introverts, on the other hand, prefer to spend their time alone to recharge their energy. This does not necessarily mean that they are shy, they just do not crave social interaction like extroverts. Ambiverts are in the middle, we love to socialise but we also like to be left alone on some days. Being a young adult in my early twenties, this can sometimes be a hurdle when trying to juggle social commitments, ill explain further on this episode. Cancelling someone refers to the act of socially disowning a person, usually a celebrity, for doing or saying something that has been flagged down as irredeemable by society. The aim of cancelling the individual is to diminish their cultural capital, ensuring that their influence in a particular field dwindles, this is achieved through boycotting and public shaming. I was once a vocal ‘canceller’ myself until I began to ask the question, where do we draw the line? These days everywhere you look someone is being bashed on the internet, in some cases it is justified but in others, it feels like we automatically ostracise those who do not conform to our ideals and that can lead us down a dangerous path. Back in Kenya, some of my friends who are from other countries around the world would often tell me about their experience as a minority in a majority ‘Black’ country. I listened to them but I was never really able to relate because that was not my reality, that is, until I moved abroad to study. When you are a racial minority, you view the world in a completely different way as certain things that were not known to you at the time become very transparent very quickly. This episode explores some of the observations I have made as a minority. The post EP 06: Being A Minority appeared first on Can I Preach?.
