Aaron Glenn's emotional reaction to becoming Jets' head coach split Boomer and Gio, who debated whether it was a positive deviation from Bill Parcells' stoicism. The Yankees' struggles led to criticism from A-Rod and Jeter, with Gio believing Aaron Boone would only be fired if they miss the playoffs. The Mets also had a poor weekend, and Boomer suggested moving Frankie Montas to the bullpen. A trade request from Micah Parsons escalated into a dispute involving Jerry Jones, Dez Bryant, and Nicki Minaj, which a caller later explained to Gio. Gio also expressed concern about his wife's disapproval of his frequent golfing.

Why are activists in Thailand, Hong Kong and Burma willing to court danger to help one another? Historian Jeffrey Wasserstrom met dozens of dissidents, including Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal, known for his protests against compulsory Thai military service; Agnes Chow, co-founder of a political party now banned in Hong Kong; and Ye Myint Win (aka Nickey Diamond), who fled to Germany from Burma in the early 2020s, fearing reprisal from the junta for his human rights work. Activists like these three express solidarity with one another online and in the streets, and sometimes refer to themselves as belonging to the “Milk Tea Alliance,” a nod to their shared opposition to nationalistic Beijing loyalists and the fact that their cultures' iconic drinks contain dairy, unlike mainland China's traditional tea. The political situation in Burma, Thailand and Hong Kong are radically different. Only Burma is in a state of civil war. Only Hong Kong has changed in just a few years from a place with virtually no political prisoners to one with many. Only Thailand is a monarchy with lese-majeste laws. How do these activists, each facing their unique situations, find common ground and sustain one another? Wasserstrom traveled globally to interview members of this loosely constituted alliance, meeting some in Asia and others in exile, finding them united by democratic values, shared concerns over autocrats, and the rising influence of a common adversary—the Chinese Communist Party. Today’s Bible Verse – 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV) “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” When we place our faith in Jesus, we’re not just improved—we’re made new. In 2 Corinthians 5:17, Paul reminds believers of their brand-new identity in Christ. The past no longer defines you. This verse is a powerful promise of transformation, forgiveness, and fresh beginnings through God’s grace. If you’re in Christ, the old is gone—and your new life has begun.
What is sarcopenia and why is this such an important topic for every woman over 40? That is the topic of conversation today. What is Sarcopoenia? Sarcopenia is to muscle what osteoporosis is to bone. Significant loss of skeletal muscle mass and or muscle strength. Sarcopenia is tied to anabolic resistance in midlife women, making it harder to gain lean muscle growth or maintenance after 40. Older adults - both men and women - have to work harder to gain lean muscle mass. Women have less overall body mass and muscle to begin with and more dramatic reductions in estrogen at menopause, than men experience loss of testosterone. The key stimulus for muscle protein synthesis, will suffer more from loss of strength and mass if they aren't carefully offsetting it with planned and progressive resistance training. For women, estrogen protects muscle and bone. We need and use testosterone which is the most abundant hormone in the female body - but it's the decline in estrogen that makes the difference in muscle preservation. What Contributes to Sarcopenia? Malnutrition. Combined with sarcopenia, it's a predictor of all-cause mortality than sarcopenia alone. The United States is one of the most overfed and undernourished countries in the world. We're not eating well enough to sustain health. Sarcopenia is 100% avoidable. How Do You Measure Sarcopenia? Strength Fat free mass and height Online calculators There are physical tests or measures that include grip strength or calf circumference. Women didn't measure or track their skeletal muscle mass decades ago to know where it was at peak. It's harder to say how much mass or strength you've lost. The Surprising Statistics on What is Sarcopenia On average, muscle loss occurs 3-8% each decade starting at 30. That CAN accelerate during menopause transition. It isn't associated with loss of estrogen driving skeletal muscle protein synthesis down. It's the side effects of the decline of estrogen. Not sleeping. Struggle exercising as hard or as long Less support for your muscle from testosterone and growth hormone Have cortisol, ghrelin and leptin hormone dysregulation that interferes with muscle and fat. We do have the ability to regain lean muscle. It's proven (and shared in prior episodes) that 85+ individuals can gain both mass and strength. Available Sarcopenia Assessments: SARC-F A simple questionnaire that is a good point of reference but an easy assessment if you're active. How it works: Includes 5 components with scale scores range from 0 to 10: Strength: How much difficulty do you have in lifting and carrying 10 pounds? Assistance in walking: How much difficulty do you have walking across a room, whether you use aids or need help to do this? Rise from a chair: How much difficulty do you have transferring from a chair or bed, whether you use aids or need help to do this? Climb stairs: How much difficulty do you have climbing a flight of 10 stairs? Falls: How many times have you fallen in the past year? Flipping 50 Fitness Scorecard Helps not only measure strength and muscle mass but to see how you rank according to others in your age group. Most important is progress, comparing you to you. Start where you are by benchmarking it and learn how to improve it. How is Sarcopenia Diagnosed? Fat-Free Mass Index: FFMI ≤ 15 kg/m2 Visit this URL to calculate (turn on metric to see result): https://ffmicalculator.org/ A strength test. What is Sarcopenia: The New Glossary Osteosarcopenia - low bone mass and low muscle mass Sarcobesity - low muscle mass and high fat mass Osteosarcobesity - low bone mass, low muscle mass and high fat mass Osteobesity - low bone mass and high fat mass The biggest risk of sarcopenia is falling due to instability and inability to “right” yourself when slips and falls occur. I promised we'd visit what's possible so here that is: A 1.9-3.3% increase in global muscle mass in humans is associated with a 4.1% to 5.8% lower fat mass and reduced A1c and fasting glucose in studies lasting 2 weeks to 3 years. How to Avoid Sarcopenia? Resistance train 2x per week minimum, for some that's maximum. Know your recovery needs. Consume high protein foods and micronutrient dense foods at each meal. Wouldn't it be wonderful if in 30 or 40 years, “What is sarcopenia?” is a question like “What is scurvy or rickets?” now which is never heard of. That starts with us. Think everyone working in Hollywood is rich, famous, and living the dream? Think again. In this episode, host Gabe Howard pulls back the velvet curtain with therapist and Hollywood insider Shanelle Connell to expose the reality behind the entertainment industry's glossy facade. Forget the multimillion-dollar paychecks and private jets — most working actors, crew members, and directors grapple with constant rejection, financial insecurity, 12- to 15-hour workdays, and the unrelenting pressure to smile through it all. Even finding a therapist can be a minefield when your life is dismissed as glamorous nonsense. Takeaways: The emotional whiplash of booking a gig… and the crash that follows How societal judgment can keep performers from getting help The hidden cost of “doing what you love” when your work devours your identity Why so many stay in the industry — even if it weighs on them Whether you watch tons of movies or just wonder how fame warps mental health, this conversation will challenge everything you thought you knew about Hollywood — and the humans who keep it running. Our guest, Shanelle Connell, completed her BA in Psychology at the University of British Columbia – Okanagan. While there, she briefly served as a UBC Mental Health Network board member and performed research under Dr. Jocelyn Wentland and Dr. Suzanne Holtzman. Additionally, she participated in the Indigenous Research Mentorship Program, which awards First Nations, Inuit, and Métis undergraduate students (like herself) the possibility to work alongside faculty mentors to gain research experience of their ideal interest. Shanelle also ensured to enroll in many special interest classes at her university, like the Psychology of Creativity, Humour, and Interpersonal Relationship Psychology – contributing to her expansive understanding of how our unique psychology colours every aspect of our lives. As a former Miss Universe Canada delegate and Miss World Okanagan, Shanelle has used her platform to actively advocate on behalf of individuals who have experienced and survived domestic, mental, and sexual violence/abuse – and continues to work with individuals healing from the effects of narcissistic trauma. In 2019, Shanelle re-entered the film industry and began her professional work as an actor. She leveraged her 20+ years engagement in performance arts and commercial market to guide her journey as she made her way to on-screen entertainment. However, Shanelle did not start there and has worked in various positions like stand-in and graphics department, producing, and even has had a behind-the-scenes look at the chaos that follows agency life and the casting process. Hence, she truly understands our everyday ups and downs in this creative field. Today, Shanelle is an active member of UBCP-ACTRA and the CMPA, living between Vancouver and Kelowna, British Columbia. She frequently collaborates with our unions, non-profit organizations, and industry leaders to ensure she stays proficient in what film needs for mental health support. Even more, she values the feedback of her peers (those on and off set) on what can make her practice and our industry better. Therefore, Shanelle proudly amalgamates this insider information with her credentials to finally offer our colleagues what they deserve. Our host, Gabe Howard, is an award-winning writer and speaker who lives with bipolar disorder. He is the author of the popular book, "Mental Illness is an Asshole and other Observations," available from Amazon; signed copies are also available directly from the author. Gabe is also the host of the "Inside Bipolar" podcast with Dr. Nicole Washington. Gabe makes his home in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio. The giants we struggle with the most are not sickness, finances, pain, loss, or grief. Our biggest giants are internal. The battles that take us out are personal. Struggles like lust, greed, selfishness, anger, bitterness, and fear can become giants that destroy our faith, our relationships, and our future. We must guard our hearts and develop a close relationship with Jesus to defeat these giants within. Main Points:1. David's internal giant was lust. You may not battle this one, but perhaps you are fighting another internal giant, one with a different name. Maybe you are fighting the giant of discouragement, despair, fear, anxiety, depression, grief, anger, or unforgiveness.2. Thankfully, King David was repentant and his relationship with God was restored, but it's a tragic story that didn't have to happen if only David had guarded his heart. For us, the story is a cautionary tale and a reminder to run to God for help when we are fighting internal giants.3. Bring your giants to God. With His help, every giant can be defeated.Today's Scripture Verses:2 Samuel 5:13 - “David took more concubines and wives in Jerusalem…”Proverbs 4:23 - “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”Psalm 46:1 - “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.”Quick Links:Donate to support this podcastLeave a review on Apple PodcastsGet a copy of The 5 Minute Discipleship JournalConnect on SocialJoin The 5 Minute Discipleship Facebook Group

Trump signed an executive order last week that could fundamentally reframe the way the federal government deals with homelessness. Titled “Ending Crime and Disorder on America's Streets,” the order pivots away from housing-first strategies and toward public safety and mandatory treatment. That includes prioritizing funding for states and cities that ban urban camping, loitering, and open drug use, and it supports civil commitment — involuntary hospitalization for those with severe mental illness or addiction. Harm reduction programs are effectively defunded under this order, and treatment becomes a prerequisite for federal help. This didn't get a lot of attention in the media. That's a mistake. Homelessness is one of the most visible problems in American cities, and it's not going away. I've lived in Oakland, San Francisco, and Austin — three cities that have all struggled mightily with this issue. San Francisco in particular is the worst I've seen. It's not hyperbole to say that its homelessness crisis overshadows the city's stunning architecture and rich culture. Visitors walk away talking about tents, not the Golden Gate Bridge.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. This isn't a lecture about policy. I don't think there's an easy solution. From everything I've read and seen, roughly half of people living on the streets are there because of financial collapse — bad luck, bad decisions, and no safety net. The other half, though, don't want to reenter society. Some of them are dangerous, many are mentally ill, and addiction is everywhere. That's especially true in places like the Bay Area, where cheap or even free drugs are plentiful, and the spiral from one substance to the next ends in death more often than we acknowledge.Even in liberal cities, the political lines are shifting. When I moved to Austin in 2021, the city had rescinded its ban on urban camping. The results were immediate: tents on sidewalks, more street homelessness, and public parks taken over. A citywide referendum eventually reinstated the ban — not because Austin became more conservative, but because people across the political spectrum wanted cleaner streets. They didn't necessarily care how it happened. That's the political space Trump's executive order moves into. It's controversial, yes. And there are real concerns about forcing treatment and stripping funding from programs that do help some people. But the public mood is changing. People are frustrated. They want their cities back, and they're running out of patience for ideological purity tests. Trump, love him or hate him, is filling a leadership vacuum here. I don't know if his order will work — or if it'll be implemented at all in places that oppose him. But I do think it's a sign that this issue is far from settled, and it's about to get a lot more attention.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:03:09 - Trump's Homelessness Plan00:14:56 - Update00:15:18 - EPA Rollbacks00:20:09 - North Carolina00:23:12 - Epstein00:26:58 - Interview with Dan Turrentine00:59:56 - Wrap-up This is a public episode.
