What if the very thing you believe is helping you cope… is actually keeping you stuck? In this deeply honest and inspiring episode, I sit down with recovery advocate, certified sober coach, author, and podcaster Hannah Turner to explore her powerful journey from the chaos of addiction to the clarity of sobriety. At just 21 years old, while studying abroad in Paris, Hannah had a life-changing realization: she was an alcoholic. One pivotal moment came when she discovered a video on her phone—recorded while she was drunk—of herself pleading with her future sober self to get help and stay sober. She didn't remember filming it… but watching it changed everything.Despite a deep desire to quit drinking, Hannah faced the internal battle so many experience—the simultaneous urge to stop and to continue. What helped her begin to break free? Writing.Through poetry, Hannah found a way to process her emotions, confront her pain, and ultimately transform her life.A New Understanding of AddictionIn this conversation, we challenge the common misconception that addiction is about weakness or lack of willpower.Instead, Hannah shares a powerful truth:Addiction is often an attempt to solve a deeper problem. For her, alcohol became a way to numb feelings of inadequacy, silence self-doubt, and cope with past trauma. Struggles with a speech impediment, being labeled “too sensitive,” and experiences that left her feeling unsafe in her own body all contributed to her pain.Alcohol felt like a “magic wand”—until she realized it was actually making things worse. The Clarity of ChaosHannah's healing journey gave rise to her poetry collection, The Clarity of Chaos.Written during her time in Paris while completing her thesis on addiction, the poems were born from a period of vulnerability—when old urges resurfaced and imposter syndrome crept in.What began as a personal outlet became something more.As Hannah explains, her poems naturally fell into two themes:The chaos of addictionThe clarity of sobrietyFrom that realization, her book—and later her podcast—was born. Now two years sober and a graduate of the American University of Paris, Hannah has become a beacon of hope for others navigating similar struggles.A Message of HopeHannah's story is a powerful reminder that healing is possible—and that even in our darkest moments, there is a path forward.Recovery isn't about perfection. It's about honesty, courage, and choosing—again and again—to move toward the light.Connect with Hannah TurnerLearn more about Hannah, her book, and her work here:

What if the stories you've dismissed as “not important enough” are actually the ones your audience needs most?Erin Mark and I explore why storytelling is the bridge between expertise and transformation and why audiences connect far more deeply with emotion, struggle, and humanity than with information alone. Erin shares how she took her deeply personal experience living with cystic fibrosis and transformed it into a keynote message about resilience, uncertainty, identity, and moving forward through change. We also talk about the surprising challenge many women face: not recognizing the power of their own stories because they've lived with them for so long.In this episode, we discuss:How to “universalize” your personal story so others see themselves in itWhy many women struggle to identify their most impactful storiesErin's “Story, Struggle, Solution” frameworkHow coaches can help uncover stories and themes you can't always see yourselfWhy you do not need a dramatic life story to become a compelling speakerHow storytelling can improve podcast interviews, presentations, and thought leadershipThe importance of becoming the messenger your audience needs at exactly the right momentWe also share details about our new Story Scoping coaching package and our upcoming in-person workshop in Orlando!About My Guest: At 35, Erin's life was coming to an end. She had entered end life stage cystic fibrosis: her lungs were failing, she was dying, and time was running out. While most people were training for their next promotion or milestone, she was training to die. And then, at the very last moment, everything changed – a breakthrough medication saved her life. That moment forced Erin into her most important pivot yet: learning how to live again. Her identity had been built around survival. Now, she had to rebuild her purpose, reshape her career, and discover what it meant to truly live. What she discovered is this: pivoting isn't a one-time act, it's a repeatable skill. Whether it's a reorg, a layoff, a leadership shift, or a personal loss, every “before and after” moment is a pivot point and it requires a new kind of leadership. Perfect for corporate teams, associations, and leadership conferences, Erin's keynotes are more than inspiration. They're a mindset reset and a tactical playbook for anyone navigating change or facing an uncertain next chapter.About Us: The Speaking Your Brand podcast is hosted by Carol Cox. Have you ever found yourself saying to your child, "You're OK, don't cry," whilst knowing you mean well, but feeling like something deeper is happening? This week's Moment explores a powerful idea: we can only hold our children's emotions to the extent that we can hold our own. So many of us grew up believing resilience meant pushing through, staying strong and keeping it together. But what if real resilience is actually the opposite? In this conversation, Zoe and Dr Alex George explore the emotional patterns we inherit, why so many of us struggle to sit with difficult feelings, and how learning to hold our own emotions changes the way we parent. There's a moment where Zoe shares a huge realisation: the reason she struggled with her children's big feelings wasn't because of them - it was because no one had ever taught her how to handle her own.If you've ever felt uncomfortable with your child's tears, frustration or meltdowns, this episode might help explain why.

(6) Josiah Osgood recounts Caesar's campaigns in Britain and the subsequent Great Gallic Revolt led by the charismatic Vercingetorix. While Caesar fought for survival and glory, Cato exploited his struggles in Rome to portray him as a power-hungry threat. Following the murder of Clodius and rising urban anarchy, Cato made a pragmatic compromise by supporting Pompey as "sole consul" to restore order. This maneuver effectively turned Pompey into a junior dictator and Cato's ally. With Crassus killed in battle in the East, the Triumvirate was destroyed, leaving Caesarisolated and the Republic on the brink.
This week on Sober Awkward, Vic chats to James Swanwick about high-functioning drinking, success, pressure and the growing movement of people choosing to live alcohol free — not because they've completely fallen apart, but because they simply feel better without it.James is an Australian stop drinking expert, author, investor, entrepreneur and former SportsCenter anchor on ESPN. He is the creator of stop drinking organisation, Alcohol Free Lifestyle, which helps business owners and executives finally break free from alcohol without AA, rehab or willpower. Together, Vic and James unpack the myth that alcohol problems only affect people at “rock bottom” and explore why high achievers often struggle silently for years. They chat about identity, pride, social pressure, parenting, masculinity, success and why being outwardly functional can actually make it harder to admit something isn't working. They also explore a really interesting question:Can giving up alcohol sometimes be less about “having a problem”… and more about choosing a different lifestyle entirely?Plus there's chat about celebrity alcohol brands, the rise of the alcohol-free movement, Gen Z turning away from booze and why many people are beginning to realise that alcohol may be taking far more than it gives. This episode is for anyone who's ever wondered:“Do I actually need to wait for things to get worse before I make a change?”Enjoy!Find James' work here - IG: https://www.instagram.com/jamesswanwick/FB: https://web.facebook.com/AlcoholFreeLifestylehttps://web.facebook.com/JamesSwanwickOfficialYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@AlcoholFreeLifestylehttps://www.youtube.com/@JamesSwanwickTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jamesswanwickSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5253hMZWPlEWj6AVodbkC7Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/alcohol-free-lifestyle/id1518416850X: https://x.com/jamesswanwickAFL Website: https://alcoholfreelifestyle.com/

Switching plans before they have a chance to work is one of the most common ways people stay stuck. It looks like paying attention. It feels like being smart. But most of the time it is just impatience making the decision before the process has had enough time to do anything. Real results require staying with something long enough to find out what it can actually do. That is where trust gets built and where consistency finally starts to stick. Route 66, known as “America's Main Street” is not the longest or most-travelled American highway. Fully paved in the 1930s, it became a Depression-era migration route for poor farming families fleeing the Dust Bowl for a new start in California. It's been featured in popular media for decades. Kathleen Franz, lead curator at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, unpacks more of the road's history. And, the 1973 album “A Grain of Sand: Music for the Struggle of Asians in America” was one of the first recognized musical albums expressing Asian American identity. It's often considered a blend of political statements within a collective art project. Dr. Tony Ebel tackles one of the most commonly missed diagnoses in neurodevelopmental care: the brain-body disconnect hiding inside raging bull kids. While the drunken bull's struggles are visible and obvious, the raging bull's disorganization is buried beneath a flood of energy, motion, and output — which is exactly why pediatricians, therapists, and even chiropractors miss it. Dr. Tony breaks down the neurophysiology behind why these kids can sprint but can't skip, throw hard but can't catch, and talk constantly but struggle to articulate under pressure. He explains how subluxation at the brainstem level drives the gas pedal while shutting down the brake, and why stimulant medications, behavioral therapy, and even PT and OT will only go so far without first restoring the nervous system foundation. He closes with real hope for exhausted parents — showing how Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care doesn't just improve scans, it makes every other intervention work better too.-----Links & Resources:Mentioned in this episode:Episode 155: You Can't Work on the Brain Until You Work on the Body: The Missing Link Behind Speech, Behavior, and DevelopmentEpisode 32: Behavior Specialist Mom Shares What FINALLY Worked-----Key Topics & Timestamps01:45 Why the Brain-Body Disconnect Is Hidden in Raging Bulls 06:00 Dr. Tony's Personal Story as a Raging Bull Kid 08:00 Why Raging Bulls Thrive in Sports but Struggle in School 10:00 The INSiGHT Scans: Reading the Nervous System from the Inside 14:30 Raging Bull or Drunken Bull — The Answer Is Usually Both 17:00 What Whole Body Apraxia Actually Looks Like in a Raging Bull 24:00 What Subluxation Does at the Brainstem Level28:00 Why Medications Don't Fix the Root Cause 40:30 How Chiropractic Makes Every Other Therapy Work Better-- Follow us on Socials: Instagram: @pxdocsFacebook: Dr. Tony Ebel & The PX Docs NetworkYoutube: The PX DocsFor more information, visit PXDocs.com to read informative articles about the power of Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care.Find a PX Doc Office near me: PX DOCS DirectoryTo watch Dr. Tony's 30 min Perfect Storm Webinar: Click Here

ABOUT THE EPISODE:Dr. Wes Robins sent me a text a few weeks ago, and I stopped what I was doing and read it twice. It was a piece he had written at his kitchen table while his daughters worked on an art project beside him, and it was one of the most honest and beautiful things I have read in all the years I have been doing this work. It started with four words: you are not broken. And it kept going from there.Wes has been a guest on this show before, and I have always admired how he shows up. No pretense, no pedestal. Just a real human being who has done his own hard work and now walks alongside young people and families who are doing theirs. Since we last spoke, he made the gut-wrenching decision to close the treatment center he poured five and a half years into, and what he learned on the other side of that loss is something I think every parent who has ever watched someone they love struggle needs to hear.He is back in private practice now, seeing clients out of a cool 60's ranch house in Alpharetta, GA. He works with young people, with parents, and with families who are trying to figure out how to stay present through things that feel impossible to witness. He's a Ph.D, but has officially taken on the designation of Soul Nurse, and once he explains it, you'll understand exactly what that means. This conversation goes places I did not expect. We talk about the piece Wes wrote for parents, and he reads it aloud, and I am not going to pretend I held it together. We get into the difference between empathy and presence, why watching your child suffer might be asking something of you that has nothing to do with them, and what it actually means to be the flight attendant when your kid is in turbulence. If you have ever felt like you were failing simply by not being able to fix this, this one is for you.YOU'LL LEARN:The wise words Dr. Wes wrote at his kitchen table that stopped me coldHow to think about psychedelics and plant medicines when your child is asking (or using them)The difference between empathy and presence, and why it mattersWhy your child's struggle may be your greatest spiritual teacherWhat being the flight attendant actually looks like when you are terrified yourselfEPISODE RESOURCES:WebsiteDr. Wes Robins Youtube ChannelDr. Wes LinkedIn ProfileEmail address: drwes@eternalstrength.comPsychology Today"When The Map Burns" This podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram hereWatch the podcast on YouTube hereDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate.
