This study explores spiritual growth through struggle, using biblical examples like Jacob's wrestling with the divine messenger and apostle James' instructions for encountering and conquering difficulties in life. The key themes include trusting God during trials, maintaining faith amid challenges, and understanding that struggles refine our character. These passages highlight how believers in Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah are transformed through perseverance, seeking wisdom and clinging to God's promises, ultimately preparing for the fullness of redemption.

In 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stood before a group of students and asked them: What is your life's blueprint? Nearly 60 years later, that question still echoes louder than ever. We're living in a time of weaponized exhaustion. Democracy is being undermined, basic human rights are under attack, and billionaires are playing dictator, gleefully sentencing millions to death by slashing desperately needed aid. But history shows us again and again: when the forces of destruction rise, ordinary people must rise higher. Dr. King built a movement in the face of death threats, betrayals, and overwhelming pressure to give up. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott to victory. Our Patreon community came together to discuss his powerful instructional memoir, Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story. We're called to lead our own. Whether you're boycotting companies that cave to fascism or marching on June 14 at the No Kings March, every action matters. Join a community, find your people, and check out the Gaslit Nation Action Guide at GaslitNationPod.com. The arc of justice won't bend itself. Our job is to build, baby, build. Build movements. Build communities. Build a world where everyone's light can shine. So what's your blueprint? The world needs your light.  Want to enjoy Gaslit Nation ad-free? In this episode of The Next Level Health & Fitness Podcast, I sit down with James Yount — a longtime listener and social media supporter who reached out to share his personal story of transformation. And after hearing it, I knew we had to record this episode. James has been sober from meth for five years. But his story isn't your typical “before and after.” He was actually overweight during his active addiction — something not often talked about — and has since lost a significant amount of weight as part of his journey back to health. We dive deep into his addiction, what finally led to his rock bottom, and how he found a new path through faith and fitness. James doesn't coach, sell programs, or try to be anything other than what he is: a guy in recovery who's passionate about sharing his story to help others. This is one of those episodes that reminds you why we do this work. It's real, it's raw, and it's full of heart. We cover: James' battle with meth addiction and how he finally got clean The unique challenge of being overweight during active addiction How faith became the foundation of his recovery The role fitness played in rebuilding his life What keeps him grounded today — five years sober and thriving Whether you're in recovery, know someone who is, or just need a reminder of the power of redemption — this one's worth a listen.     Register for our June 3rd masterclass - click here   Interested in working with a coach? In this conversation we talk with Garrett Felber about their latest book A Continuous Struggle: The Revolutionary Life of Martin Sostre.  In discussing this new political biography, we cover Sostre's ideological and political journey, history as a jailhouse lawyer, his forms of organizing practice, and the ways that people supported his campaign for freedom from political imprisonment. We talk about the influence of Great Depression era Harlem, Black and Puerto Rican Nationalism, Marxism-Leninism, national liberation movements, armed struggle, Women's Liberation, and Anarchism on Sostre's political thought and practice. Although much of what we know about Martin Sostre has to do with political letters and writings during the time of his incarceration, Felber also shares insights that few know about Sostre's life, community organizing, and institution building on the outside. Garrett Felber is an educator, writer, and organizer. They are the author of Those Who Know Don't Say: The Nation of Islam, the Black Freedom Movement, and the Carceral State, and coauthor of The Portable Malcolm X Reader, with Manning Marable. Felber is a cofounder of the abolitionist collective Study and Struggle and is currently building a radical mobile library, the Free Society People's Library, in Portland, Oregon. Yesterday we hosted Garrett Felber along with Russell Shoatz III on a livestream where we talked about some of the resonances between Martin Sostre's life, political thought, and approaches to political prisoner defense work and that of Russell “Maroon” Shoatz and we also discussed CURBfest which is expanding to the West Coast for the first time this year.  Tomorrow Thursday the 29th we will host a livestream on Sundiata Jawanza's Freedom Campaign including a quickly approaching parole hearing. We encourage all of you to go to the website and send letters of support for his release. The website says that letters were due on May 19th, but there is still just a little time if you can get a letter in the mail today or at least submit one electronically or contribute to the legal support fund that would be great.  There are a number of other initiatives we want to share related to this episode, the campaign to free the Mississippi 5 which Garrett Felber mentions in this episode and the exoneration effort for Martin Sostre and his codefendant who is still with Geraldine (Robinson) Pointer. Links for that are in the show description. If you like the work that we do, please contribute to our patreon or BuyMeACoffee accounts. These episodes each take hours of preparation, recording time, and production time and listeners like you are the only means of support for that work. Over the last month we've seen a 10% decline in recurring support. We know people are under financial strain right now, but if more of you who listen are able to contribute even a dollar a month it helps make this show possible and sustainable. When discussing the topic of true beauty, it's also important to talk about the times when life isn't so beautiful. In today's discussion, with Michelle Keener, that's exactly what we tackle. Michelle K. Keener (PhD, Liberty) is an adjunct professor of Christianity at Houston Christian University, as well as associate research fellow with the Kirby-Laing Centre for Public Theology. She is also the director of discipleship for a growing church in Las Vegas and an award-winning novelist and devotional author.  In our time together, we discuss Michelle's latest book, Comfort in the Ashes: Explorations in the Book of Job to Support Trauma Survivors. Michelle helps us see how we can be a loving, healing presence to those undergoing struggles, how the church can be more helpful and attentive to those undergoing or recovering from trauma, and what Job teaches us about the beauty of God amidst suffering. My hope is that this conversation will help you feel less alone in any struggle you may be undergoing and, as Michelle says, may we experience God to be our place of refuge.Buy Melissa L. Choosing joy over fear and pessimism when life feels heavy | with Nicole Zasowski

Have you ever lived in a mindset where you're basically waiting for the other shoe to drop, hope feels impossible or too dangerous? It can feel safer to fly low, embrace pessimism and cynicism and think, “if life turns out half as bad as I imagine, then at least I'll be ready for it.” That's the kind of mindset Stephanie had when she was younger. Stephanie welcomes Nicole Zasowski, author and therapist, who shares wisdom on reclaiming joy and celebration in a world often dominated by worry and pessimism. Nicole's journey and research reveal that joy isn't just an emotional response, but a courageous, spiritual discipline rooted in God's faithfulness. Despite her deep faith, she had concluded that joy and celebration were risky. She was sure that celebration would come with a catch, so she became practiced in praying for the miracle while preparing to mourn and dreaming while rehearsing disaster. And yet she discovered that our methods of self-protection came at a cost. A lot of the loss we experience in our lives is not only the grief and the disappointment itself, but also the joy that we overlook because we are too afraid to embrace it, she tells us. That's the conversation on Gospel Spice today. Understanding the Struggle with Joy Nicole begins by dispelling the myth that celebration and joy come naturally to her—in fact, her books were born from seasons marked by change, loss, and disappointment. Through experiences like moving across the country and enduring infertility and miscarriages, Nicole discovered a heartbreaking truth: much of her loss was not just in what she lacked, but in her refusal to embrace the goodness that God placed in her path out of fear that it would be taken away. This led her into research, both biblical and scientific, to understand why joy can feel so vulnerable and difficult, especially when we've experienced pain. Redefining Celebration: A Spiritual Discipline American and Western cultures, Nicole notes, often see celebration as a reward for good news or accomplishments. However, the Bible—especially the Old Testament—demonstrates celebration as a spiritual rhythm and discipline, not just a reaction. The Israelites practiced regular, scheduled celebrations and feasts, regardless of their current circumstances. These rhythms were not designed to reward themselves for their goodness, but to remember and honor God's consistent faithfulness. Celebration, then, is about choosing remembrance: looking back at God's goodness and letting that fuel hope, courage, and anticipation about the future—even when circumstances are hard. The Vulnerability of Joy Joy is inherently vulnerable because it opens our hearts to the possibility of loss. For those who have experienced pain, pessimism and cynicism can become self-protective mechanisms. However, Nicole's research and experience as a therapist show that numbing ourselves to joy doesn't actually protect us. Rather, it diminishes our ability to savor God's goodness and leaves us empty-handed in difficult times. Practical Tools for Practicing Joy Nicole emphasizes that joy, like any virtue, can and must be intentionally practiced. Two key habits can help rewire our hearts toward joy: 1.      Savoring: Take mental “snapshots” of small moments, deliberately noticing what you see, hear, smell, taste, and feel. This helps your brain store joyful experiences that might otherwise go unnoticed. 2.      Thanksgiving (vs. gratitude): Beyond silently feeling grateful, speak and express thanks out loud—to God or others. Research shows that this actually heightens and solidifies joy inside us. Key Takeaways from our conversation ·         Joy and celebration are not merely emotions; they are spiritual practices and choices that shape us. ·         God invites us into rhythms of celebration even when our feelings or circumstances do not match, because it roots us deeper in remembrance of His faithfulness. ·         Practicing joy often feels counterintuitive—especially in pain—but it is the way God designed us to process life and hope. ·         Tools like savoring and thanksgiving can help transform our hearts and brains to default toward joy instead of worry or cynicism. Nicole encourages us that it's never too late to begin practicing joy, regardless of our life's season. The discipline of joy prepares us for eternity, deepening our delight in God and training our hearts for hope and celebration—no matter what comes our way. MORE ABOUT NICOLE ZASOWSKI Nicole Zasowski is a licensed marriage and family therapist and author of What If It's Wonderful, From Lost to Found and her new Bible Study Daring Joy. She is also the coauthor of Advances and Techniques in Restoration Therapy and Families and Forgiveness. As a writer who wears her heart proudly on her sleeve, Nicole's work is a weave of biblical wisdom, psychological expertise, and vulnerable storytelling. Often praised for her wisdom and approachable style, Nicole is a sough-after speaker, frequently teaching at conferences, retreats, and women's events around the country on topics that integrate faith and psychology. In addition to her private practice, Nicole's therapeutic work has included teaching as an adjunct professor at Alliance Theological Seminary in New York and leading marriage intensives at the Hideaway Experience. Nicole and her husband, Jimmy, are the grateful parents of three young children. Her favorite place to be is looking for sea glass on the Connecticut shoreline, exploring a New England town or New York City neighborhood, or sitting in her front yard around a fire with her family, friends, and neighbors. Meet Nicole at https://www.nicolezasowski.com/  MORE ABOUT “DARING JOY” Joy can feel risky. When you've experienced pain of any kind, it can feel easier not to dream than to be disappointed, or not to hope than to be left heartbroken. If you ever feel like it's safer not to embrace joy at all than to hold something that might break, you're not alone. Thankfully, the Bible paints a different picture—one that gives you the courage to hold on to joy regardless of your circumstances. https://www.nicolezasowski.com/daring-joy  MORE ABOUT “WHAT IF IT'S WONDERFUL” What If It's Wonderful? Author and marriage and family therapist Nicole Zasowski knows that it's difficult to trust joy and find the courage to celebrate when you have endured seasons of disappointment and despair. When God has been your faithful anchor in the storm, does joy then leave you unmoored? Nicole reminds us that we can stay tethered to the hope of Christ in seasons of celebration, because even joyful days hold the learning, growth, and intimate encounters with Jesus that our hearts crave. What If It's Wonderful? offers a new perspective. With a compelling psychological and spiritual case for the importance of embracing joy and celebration, even when it feels scary. https://www.nicolezasowski.com/wonderful  We invite you to check out the first episode of each of our series, and decide which one you will want to start with. In this podcast, learn about the codependent communication struggles no one talks about. In codependency, the focus is usually on keeping the peace, avoiding conflict, and managing someone else's emotions, at the expense of your own truth. This makes authentic communication feel dangerous, especially if you grew up in a toxic environment where speaking up led to punishment, rejection, or emotional withdrawal. Poor communication is one of the defining features of toxic relationships, especially when one or both partners are codependent. Rather than say what they mean, codependent people tend to hint, people-please, or stuff their emotions down to avoid being abandoned. Over time, this leads to resentment, confusion, and emotional disconnection. Without clear, honest communication, even the strongest connection can break down under the weight of unspoken expectations and unmet needs. Healing from codependency means learning how to communicate with clarity, courage, and compassion. It requires unlearning the belief that your needs don't matter and developing the inner safety to speak your truth.  Whether you're in recovery from a toxic relationship or just starting to recognize codependent patterns in your life, learning how to communicate effectively is essential if you want to build real intimacy and self-respect. The first step, is telling the truth, and learning to take accountability for poor communication skills, while understanding with self compassion, it could literally be no other way.  Today, if this resonates with you, you have a shot at healing your life by unlearning the survival patterns that kept you feeling safe, that also kept you stuck repeating the faulty patterns from the past. Are you codependent? If so, you probably have an insecure, anxious attachment style, and the good news is, we can fix that!  Calling all serious, ready, willing and able souls who have the time and can invest in themselves at this time to finally take their lives back.
