Sapía has finished her amazingly complex speech with the pilgrim Dante . . . or has she? At the opening of Canto XIV, we're not sure who is speaking? Still Sapía? No, two envious souls, leaning against each other, almost gossiping about our pilgrim. And nothing satisfies envy quite like gossip.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we explore this new thing: the opening of a canto in COMEDY in which unnamed (and unknowable!) souls just starting talking out of the blue. Be on guard. They may not be all they seem at first blush. Please consider supporting this podcast through your contribution. If you'd like to read along or continue the conversation about this passage, please find this individual episode on my website, markscarbrough.com.[03:31] Two penitent souls interrupt the action of PURGATORIO.[06:00] The opening of canto XIV is a new thing in COMEDY, much as Sapía has identified Dante the pilgrim as a new thing in her world.[08:19] There are two curious words in this opening dialogue: "our" and "sweetly."[11:45] These two spirits are apparently quite intimate with each other. Will that intimacy pay off?[12:50] One of the envious penitents divides Dante's soul from his body . . . and uses Dante's own words to address him.[15:41] Dante is quite cagey when he answers their question, all the while putting his soul and body back together.[20:16] Dante replies with one of his own favorite rhetorical techniques: periphrasis. Elsewhere in COMEDY, Dante is pretty forthcoming about his origins.[22:53] Is Dante modest? Or cagey? Or "just" truthful?[28:41] Rereading the passage: PURGATORIO, Canto XIV, lines 1 - 21.

Welcome back to Microcast Monday. Short bursts of inspiration and motivation to get you started for your week. Happy Memorial Day. Please take a moment on this day to reflect and pay tribute to the brave men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice for this great country. God Bless them All. Thank you for serving your communities and our great country. Remember you are honored, cherished and loved. Keep up the great work. I struggled. I was in a dark place for a long time. I was in pain, and I masked it with alcohol. I was contemplating hurting myself. I finally decided to reach out and ask for help, and I am grateful I did. FHE Health and The Shatterproof Program saved my life. If you are struggling, you don't have to stay there. We can and will help you. Reach out today at 303.960.9819. https://fherehab.com/ https://www.cjevolution.com/shatterproof/ This week I want you to really reflect and think about the people who you spend the most time with. This could be family or it could be friends. Ask yourself are they helping or hindering. If they do not bring any value to your life and make you strive for greatness then it's time to leave them behind. Now this might sound harsh, but it's necessary for your overall health and wellbeing. Don't be afraid to move on from people who are negative, toxic and complain all the time. They LOVE company. Take charge of your inner circle and watch how your attitude changes for the better. www.cjevolution.com Patrick

You need to be very careful who you let into your circle, because a lot of people want to see you fail. Remember the saying Misery Loves Company? Today, I'm presenting an audioblog about how our social circles profoundly impact us, often more than we realize. We tend to adopt the behaviors, mannerisms, language, and emotions of the people we spend the most time with. It's essential to become more aware of how our associations affect us positively or negatively, so we can strengthen our connections with those who inspire and support us and either improve or let go of those relationships that don't. When you finish reading the blog, check out the Your Aha! Life Journey Accelerator I created as a complement: The Company You Keep: Social Circle Inventory. You can complete four exercises to get a clearer sense of just how impactful your current social circle is in your life and tips on building better associations. Thanks for listening to the audioblog. Please send your questions or feedback. If you love it, give this audioblog a stellar rating, and share it with your friends. I'll be back soon with another audioblog. Go to my website to learn more about Your Aha! Ben is the writer/director of the films Boiler Room (2000), Prime (2006), and Bleed For This (2016) starring Miles Teller. Most recently he was the Exec Producer for the ABC show The Company You Keep and has written/directed several episodes for Snowfall on FX, among many other projects. Boiler Room was iconic for many reasons, the biggest one being that 20+ years later it holds up as well as it did when it premiered at Sundance and helped launch Vin Diesel's career and cement Ben Affleck as a serious actor. Ben has been a huge inspiration for us for us as Jewish creators, and to Mike specifically for portraying Jews on film. It was a thrill to sit down and discuss creativity, Hollywood, and his recent missions to Israel post-October 7th.

There will be times in our lives where we have tons of friends, our calendar is full of events, and our lives feel full. There is a reason for that season. But there will also be times where our lives where it's just us. We don't have a lot of friends, we don't relate anymore to the people we used to relate to, and we feel separated. We feel isolated, and there is a reason for that season too. With separation, comes elevation sis. Your growth is not a group project.
