I personally know people who will faint at the sight of blood. In fact, I've discovered that lots of people have strong aversions to blood. It may surprise you to discover that God clearly states that He isn't interested in the blood from sacrifices. Which raises some really big questions about why so many sacrifices were required in the Old Testament… This week, across all locations, I have the privilege of unpacking the most important day in the entire year for the nation of Israel. The One & The Only, for 1,500 years, one man and only one man was able to do the one thing everyone in Israel needed...make them right with God by making atonement for their sins. God could not have been more clear about their need for a mediator, a high priest, that could approach God on behalf of the people. The problem was this, every high priest was also a sinner in need of a savior, and as a result every high priest had died... SO FAR. Moses was the man! He was the man who led them out of Egypt, the man who met with God face to face, the man who received the commandments, the man who gave them the Torah. I often hear people say that the reason they've started coming to our Sunday services is because they want their kids to "grow up in church.” While I appreciate the idea, I often want to say something along the lines of, "I also think our Sunday gatherings are great, but what our kids actually need is to grow up around parents who are completely surrendered to Jesus.” I may not know a lot, but I do know this: you can't pass on what you don't personally possess. In other words, if we want to have something to give to the next generation, we must first acquire it for ourselves. This week, we will unpack what the Scriptures say is the precious possession and how to pass it down to those who follow us! The “experts” say that we are about to experience the greatest transfer of wealth from one generation to the next that world has ever seen. In fact here's exactly what they say; “Gen X and Millennials are set to inherit a staggering $124 trillion in assets over the next 23 years in what many call America's Great Wealth Transfer.” Although I am or not at all sure you or I will see any of that, I am certain of this, $124 trillion is nothing compared to the transfer made on our behalf over 2,000 years ago! The real question though is this, will we be faithful to ensure that the message of the Gospel gets transferred to the next generation, or will it die with us? Even in chains, facing trial and uncertainty, the Apostle Paul found a joy that couldn't be taken away. Philippians is often called “The Epistle of Joy” — not just because Paul mentions joy 16 times, but because his own life exemplifies how true joy is rooted in God's unchanging presence and grace.  Paul's message is clear: no adversity, no hardship, no external circumstance can steal the joy we find in Christ. “Membership has its privileges!” i remember hearing these credit card ads as a kid and thinking, “I wanna be a privileged member!” I mean seriously, who wouldn't want special access to exclusive privileges? A few weeks ago, I was at an airport and realized that my Amex card gained access to the airport lounge that I had previously thought only Elon Musk got to use. Not only did I also have the authority to enter the world of the rich and famous, but I even had THE authority to bring a friend! Membership has its privileges! If you find that appealing, wait until you hear where we're headed this Sunday, because membership in the family of God also comes with privileges that you may have been previously unaware of.
