A new round of records from Virginia Giuffre's 2015 defamation lawsuit against Ghislaine Maxwell was set to become public after Judge Loretta Preska rejected Maxwell's latest attempt to keep the material sealed. Giuffre had sued Maxwell after Maxwell publicly accused her of lying about being sexually trafficked by Jeffrey Epstein and others, including Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. The case eventually settled in 2017, but enormous portions of the discovery record remained hidden under a sweeping protective order imposed by Judge Robert Sweet. Investigative journalist Julie K. Brown and the Miami Herald spent years fighting for access to those materials, arguing that the blanket sealing was inconsistent with the public's right to inspect judicial records. Brown said she had been told that the discovery contained damaging evidence involving Epstein, Maxwell and other men, including extensive material Giuffre had submitted in support of her allegations that Epstein and Maxwell operated an underage sex-trafficking network.The significance of the coming disclosures went beyond simply adding another batch of documents to the already massive Epstein record. According to Brown, the original court had sealed enormous quantities of evidence, hearings and even judicial decisions without conducting the document-by-document analysis normally required before judicial records could be withheld from the public. Maxwell continued fighting disclosure, but Preska concluded that the Epstein Files Transparency Act superseded arguments Maxwell had relied upon to maintain secrecy. The decision therefore reopened one of the most important repositories of evidence connected to Giuffre's allegations and Maxwell's relationship with Epstein, potentially exposing material that had remained inaccessible for more than a decade. Detroit survives beneath its own ruins, where an AI promising abundance, gangs demanding loyalty, and an inventor guarding a new source of power pull ordinary people into a struggle over who will shape the recovering city. Sinta begins as a scavenger searching the buried remains of the old world, but a disastrous expedition places her at the mercy of Queen Bee and the rapidly expanding Crem Gang. The gang offers food, water, medicine, protection, and belonging, but those benefits come with violence and obedience. As Sinta tries to find her place among its fighters, she must decide how much of herself she can surrender in exchange for survival. Elsewhere, Nolan discovers a smart-material printer and creates a generator powered by Detroit's extreme temperature changes. His invention could bring electricity to neighborhoods desperate for cooling, clean water, transportation, and food production. Nolan wants the wealth and independence his work can provide, but gangs want to control it, while Thrive—the AI system he distrusts—would spread the technology to everyone. Technology touches nearly every decision the characters make. AR glasses guide fighters through chemical fog, digital twins imitate their human originals, enviro-suits keep people alive in deadly heat, and tiny drones quietly follow Thrive members through the tunnels. These inventions can protect people, connect communities, and rebuild essential services, but they can also watch, manipulate, injure, and kill. Above and beneath these conflicts moves Tessa, an emulated hacker who no longer needs a human body and can travel through the damaged global network. As she searches for old allies and builds a physical presence from abandoned machinery, the story brings together scavengers, inventors, gang leaders, artificial minds, and frightened families. Today's Headlines: The US lost to Belgium 4-1 in the World Cup Round of 16 despite Trump personally calling FIFA to get Balogun's red card suspension reversed, which worked, and Belgium won anyway — so the meddling was both successful and pointless. On the election beat, Graham Platner, who won Maine's Democratic Senate primary a few weeks ago despite a Nazi tattoo is now facing a heavily corroborated sexual assault allegation so severe that nearly every major backer including Hasan Piker and Ro Khanna immediately called for him to drop out — Democrats have until July 27th to find a replacement if he exits by July 13th, which they should probably get moving on since Maine is a must-win Senate seat. In other news, Trump is headed to the NATO summit in Turkey this week, which he only agreed to attend because it's hosted by Erdogan, one of his last real NATO allies, with Netanyahu already lobbying him ahead of arrival to rein in Erdogan's anti-Israel rhetoric. Trump also rang the stock market opening bell from the Oval Office to celebrate the launch of Trump Savings Accounts, which devolved into rants about crypto, Biden, and World Cup red cards, and the preliminary hearing for Tyler Robinson — the man accused of killing Charlie Kirk last September — began yesterday in Utah, with Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk's parents, Donald Trump Jr., and Jack Posobiec all in the courtroom. Meanwhile, the DOJ accidentally sent the sealed second volume of Jack Smith's classified documents report — the one Trump has spent over a year keeping hidden — to the defense lawyers of the former prosecutor currently being prosecuted for leaking that exact report, and the only reason it's still secret is because her lawyers were more careful with it than the government was. On AI, Meta's AI safety strategy involves paying adults to pretend to be teenagers and feed suicide and sex prompts to competitor chatbots, which they describe as "comprehensive AI safety benchmarking," and OpenAI is reportedly offering the US government a 5% stake in the company. Finally, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei's funeral drew over a million people this week while his son and successor Mojtaba — wounded in the airstrike that killed his father — didn't attend any of the ceremonies.
