Most of us grew up with the Golden Rule: “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” It's simple, it's memorable, and it works at a basic level. But as adults, Joe Rockey has been noticing a hard truth: that rule can fail fast in real relationships—because people value different things, receive care differently, and can completely miss a gesture that would have meant the world to you.So Joe and Father Boniface Hicks press into the upgrade Jesus gives at the Last Supper: “Love one another as I have loved you.” That standard doesn't start with your preferences. It starts with Jesus—His self-emptying love, His patience, His sacrifice, and the grace that makes that kind of love possible in us. The conversation reframes Christian love as more than being “nice” or being reciprocal; it's learning to see and serve the other person as Christ sees and serves them, in a way that builds communion rather than control.Key IdeasThe Golden Rule helps children learn the basics, but adult relationships need more than “my preferences projected onto you.”Jesus sets a higher standard: love as He loves—not simply “love your neighbor as yourself.”That love isn't willpower; it's grace-driven transformation (sanctification) into Christlikeness.Real love requires mutuality: listening, learning, appropriate vulnerability, and choosing what actually serves the other.God's love is personal and present: Jesus knows us fully and loves us anyway—so we can stop “performing” and start growing.Links & References (official/source only)None explicitly referenced with clear official/source URLs in this transcript.CTA: If this helped, please leave a review or share this episode with a friend.Questions or thoughts? Jesus gives His disciples a command that changes everything: love one another as He has loved them. This is more than kindness or emotion—it is sacrificial, Spirit-empowered love that becomes the distinguishing mark of God's people. This episode explores how genuine Christian love becomes one of the clearest witnesses to a watching world.
This week on Trailer Parked Theology, Josh and Kristi share a takeaway from a recent marriage retreat that challenged one of the most common images used to explain Christian marriage: the triangle. They explore how sacramental marriage is about far more than two individuals independently pursuing God.Together they unpack a richer vision of marriage as a living icon of Christ's love for the Church, where spouses become instruments of God's grace for one another and for the world. The conversation then shifts into 1 John 2:7-11, where John speaks of an "old" commandment that is somehow also "new." Josh and Kristi explore how Jesus fulfilled the commandment of love, transforming it from instruction into lived demonstration through His life, death, and resurrection.Episode HighlightsThe popular "marriage triangle" analogySacramental marriage as an icon of Christ and His ChurchHow spouses help lead one another to heavenThe difference between the "old" and "new" commandment in 1 JohnHow Jesus demonstrated perfect love rather than simply teaching itWhy growth often begins when God reveals our blind spotsLearning to receive correction with humility and gracePractical ways to see God's presence in everyday lifeScripture Discussed1 John 2:7-11 Support the show

John tells us all about a New Commandment. Experience Love in a new way in Christ and be empowered in Christ to love.
In John 13:31-35, we see that God's glory was revealed through His sacrificial love, and we show that we belong to Him by loving one another.

Before Jesus' departure into heaven he gives his disciples a new command: to love another as he loved them. Loving others is not new, but loving "as Jesus loved them" raises the standard of love. And this love will be the ultimate testimony to the world that we are genuine disciples of Christ.

A New Commandment 31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. The sermon centers on the stark contrast between counterfeit and genuine discipleship, using Judas's betrayal as a sobering warning against superficial faith driven by self-interest, power, or worldly gain. In response, Jesus, following Judas's departure, reveals the true mark of a disciple: love modeled after His own sacrificial, self-giving, and grace-filled example, which is not merely a moral command but a transformative reality rooted in Christ's prior love. This love, defined by truth, holiness, and the willingness to confront sin in humility, is the distinguishing sign of authentic faith, as affirmed throughout John's writings and reinforced by Paul's distinction between godly sorrow that leads to repentance and worldly grief that ends in death. The passage calls believers to examine their hearts, recognizing that true discipleship is not measured by proximity to Christ or emotional zeal, but by a life shaped by divine love that reflects God's glory and seeks the sanctification of His people, even at great personal cost.
It seems confusing at first. John says there this is not a new commandment, but then it is a new commandment. But what is really happening is that John is accentuating what Christ has already renewed, our love for one another. The Law and the Prophets hangs on 2 commandments; our love for the Lord and our love for each other. We are not just called to love, but to love as Jesus loves!
May the love that we have received from God be reflected in the way we love others.

SERIES: All Things New | SERMON: "New Commandment" | TEXT: John 13:31-35 | DATE: 1/18/2026 | SPEAKER: Jake Brown | www.Liberty-Christian.com
I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Tuesday morning, the 13th of January, 2026, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go to the Gospel of John 13:34-35: ”A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” (The second most powerful commandment in the Bible, after loving the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength, and this is Jesus speaking).I want to tell you a little story because I know there are some of you that are unable to get to visit other people, unable to go out and preach the Gospel to the ends of the earth, but there is something you can do! Now listen to this story: I got a beautiful email early this morning from a lady who said her mom lived in New Zealand. Her eyesight and her hearing were failing but she heard about the…wait for it, the thought for today! This lady, writing the story and telling me about her mom, has a sister who lives in Alberta, Canada. So what has happened is, this thought for the day, every morning, has connected them together - Mom in New Zealand, this lady who wrote me the letter in Ontario, Canada, and her sister who lives in Alberta, Canada. The three of them are now totally connected daily. They share the message and the scripture with each other, and she was just thanking us for doing the thought for today. Jesus says we must love one another. Those three ladies love each other! Do you remember that beautiful old song, A New Commandment? As we start the new year, maybe you'd like to sing this one with me, if you know the words, and it goes something like this:A new commandment I give unto youThat you love one another as I have loved youThat you love one another as I have loved youBy this shall all men know That you are My disciplesIf you have love, one for anotherBy this shall all men know That you are My disciplesIf you have love, one for anotherJesus bless you and goodbye.
Remember God loves you so much he sent his Son Jesus Christ to take the punishment for your sins. You are of great value. Jesus loves you and He is just a prayer away!

We continue our examination of the New Law or Law of the Gospel, specifically the Golden Rule and New Commandment of Jesus. Fr. Mike emphasizes that the New Commandment requires us to love God as the center of everything we are and everything we have. He also unpacks how the New Commandment is also known as the law of love, grace, and freedom. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 1970-1974.
