Secular historian Tom Holland has shown how the Christian revolution and its concept of sacrificial love has changed our world – so much so that we tend to take it for granted. Yet while love remains central to our lives and culture, it is often misunderstood and distorted. Jesus commands his friends to love one another as he loved them, and in John's gospel we see how it's practical and concrete: Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman; his provision at the wedding at Cana; how he deals with Judas, and more ... Passages in Deuteronomy help us understand Jesus' biblical concept of love and reject the way our modern culture distorts and practices “love."
John 13:31-35
"A New Commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, love one another."How can Jesus command love, something seemingly impossible to command? And what might it mean to love others as Jesus has loved us?To get at these questions, we look at the setting of Jesus giving this new commandment, namely, when he washes the disciple's feet. As we ponder this act of service, we discover not only the depth of challenge in Jesus words to love as he loved, but also the word of grace and promise contained in them. This is a screenshot of an artwork by Alida Bothma. A meditation preached by Fr. Eric Nicolai on May 18, 2025, at Lyncroft Center in Toronto. The Lord took care to leave a deep impression on the disciples, the apostles, when he gave them the mandatum novum. (John 13)It was like a special legacy that he wanted to leave behind. They remembered the words, his tone, but they especially remembered his gestures of tenderness and the warm tone of his voice when he knelt in front of them and washed their feet. They never forgot that night. It stayed imprinted on their brain.

Embrace the New Commandment
That's what we hear this weekend, but what does it mean for us specifically?
May 15th, 2025: The Sacrament of Penance Casts Out All Uncleanness; Disney's Agenda is Contrary to the New Commandment of Jesus; St John Baptist De La Salle & Spiritual Childhood
This message on 1 John 2:7-11 was preached by our brother Matthew Hunter. It was delivered at our Lord's Day Evening Worship. This is sermon 2 in our expository series in 1 John. If you have any comments or questions we would love to hear from you. Please email us on: pastor@gbcb.org.uk
In this message, Pastor Jason outlines the importance of making decisions based on one's relationship with God and others, highlighting the Great Commission and the New Commandment as guiding principles. Ultimately, Pastor Jason calls us to a life characterized by leading humbly, investing eternally, following faithfully, and enjoying abundantly while embracing our divine opportunities.
First was the heart transplant. Then the circumcision of the heart. Now the New Commandment for the New Man: Give your heart away!
Jesus said, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another as I have loved you”. How do you think people see Christians? As judgemental, opinionated, old fashioned, and hypocritical; or as caring, loving, kind, honest, and faithful. Now that's a good question for us to consider! On the night before He died, Jesus gave His disciples a newcommand – to love one another. This doesn't seem all that new at first glance. The Old Testament law commanded God's people to love their neighbour (Leviticus 19:18) and the expert in the law knew the whole law could be summed up by “Loving God and loving people”. The new part of the command was – as I have loved you. Jesus was commanding a new pattern of love and a new power to love. Elena unpacks this for us in todays message. "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35 ESVDuring the last supper, Jesus instructed the disciples and gave them a new commandment - "that you love one another." This is not just a suggestion, or a good idea. Jesus tells us the way that we should live in relation to one another. This week, Pastor Ryan brings a passionate word on the implications of Jesus washing his disciples' feet. This powerful act of servanthood reveals the heart of God's upside-down Kingdom. Jesus not only teaches us but also demonstrates how we are to serve others. His call for us to do as He has done is a reminder that we were created to serve, just as He has served us.

Why does Jesus say the hour for him to be glorified has come if he's headed to a gruesome death on a cross? Why does he say the disciples can't come with him? What does he mean when he says the command to love one another is “new”? How can we love each other as Jesus has first loved us?

Message from James Brilliantes on March 2, 2025
Homily from the Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time. Love those who deserve it. And those who don't. Jesus gives us a commandment that existed from the beginning: we are to love those who deserve it. This is justice. Jesus goes on to teach us and even greater love: mercy. Mass Readings from February 23, 2025: 1 Samuel 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23 Psalm 103:1-2, 3-4, 8, 10, 12-131 Corinthians 15:45-49 Luke 6:27-38
Obedience to God's commandment to love is unnatural. Better yet, it is supernatural when we love our neighbor and even our enemy as Christ did.
When it comes to the story of Jesus washing the disciple's feet, it feels like the Church has exhibited “selective hearing”!o In today's passage Jesus tells us why we should pay closer attention! John 13:18-30o In this part of our passage Jesus is demonstrating that it's been prophesied that that He would be betrayed! (Psalm 41:9)§ In other words, He's NO victim! This is part of the PLAN! John 13:31-38o In verse 34 Jesus gives a “new commandment”, to love one another.§ What's so “new” about this?! Even non-religious people love their family and friends.· This is where Jesus washing the feet of the disciples comes in.o By washing the feet of the disciples Jesus was turning societal norms upside down!§ You must never think you are too good or too important to do anything, as a Christian.· THAT'S NEW!§ Living like that will not only cause the world to sit up and take notice, it will cause God to, too!Theme: New Commandment Scripture: John 13:18-38 Simple.
