In our last episode, Jesus appeared to the apostle John with instructions for seven churches. After this, John sees God seated on His throne, attended by four living creatures and 24 elders in white robes. One like a slaughtered lamb appears in the midst of the throne to open a scroll that has seven seals. In today's episode, the lamb begins to open those seals. The first four seals release riders on horses, each with a different supernatural task. The fifth seal prompts the souls of those slain for their faithfulness to cry for justice. The sixth seal induces chaotic natural catastrophes and reveals those coming out of the great tribulation. The first four seals release four horsemen. The first rides a white horse, symbolizing conquest. The second rides a red horse, bringing war. The third rides a black horse, indicating economic hardship and famine. The fourth rides a pale horse, representing death, followed by Hades. The fifth seal reveals the souls of martyrs under the altar, crying out for justice. They are told to rest a little longer until the full number of martyrs is reached. The sixth seal causes great cosmic upheaval: earthquakes, a darkened sun, a blood-red moon, and the sky being rolled up like a scroll. People hide in fear, knowing the day of God's wrath has arrived.  History is not random or out of divine control. The Lamb opens each seal with purpose, and what follows is part of God's plan. We may see war, suffering, injustice, and fear in the world, but we trust that Jesus is not distant. He holds the scroll and oversees all things. When we face hardship, we must not lose heart. Like the faithful ones beneath the altar, we wait and trust that God sees, hears, and will act in His time. We do not place our hope in earthly power or comfort. We place our hope in the Lamb who is worthy and in the justice that will come. We endure with faith, knowing He will make all things right.  Worthy Lord, You are holy and just, and all of history unfolds by Your will. You entrusted the Lamb to open the seals and carry out Your purpose on the earth. Even now, when we see turmoil and pain, remind us that You are not silent or absent. You know every act of evil, and You hear the cries of the faithful. Help us rest in Your timing and trust in Your justice. Teach us to live with reverence, to stand firm in faith, and to remember that Your day will come. You are our refuge and our hope forever.  Thought Questions: The first four seals revealed much turmoil on the earth. In today's time, how does Jesus help you stay at peace when wars and woes abound? Martyrs begged for their blood to be avenged. How do you keep your confidence that God will render appropriate judgment in His time? “The wrath of the Lamb” came upon Jerusalem, and later Rome. Why should nations fear God's wrath, even before the judgment day?

When we last read from Revelation, we were in the throne room of God and the Lamb approached to open the seals of a scroll. Today, the Lamb opens the seals. We see a pattern in the first four seals that includes the opening of a seal followed by one of the four living creatures saying “Come!” In each instance a horse and a rider appear, sometimes appearing in surreal forms. The fifth seal prompts distribution of white robes to those who had been slaughtered because of the word of God as they cry out for judgment and holy vengeance. The sixth seal prompts violent natural disasters. Later, John sees the sealed of Israel, 12,000 from each tribe. As the Lamb breaks the 6th seal, John shares about the obvious panic that ensues the destruction of the world as we know it.

As the 5th seal is broken, John sees those who have been martyred for their faith speak out to God for a timeline on when justice will be carried out.

As the Lamb starts to crack open the seals on the scroll, different Horsemen are brought forth in an act of judgment on Creation.

Scripture Reading: Revelation 6:1-8 The focus in the book of Revelation changes sharply from chapter 5 to chapter 6.  Chapters 4 and 5 pictured the throne of God in heaven, but in chapter 6 the scene shifts to the earth.  There is a stark contrast between the glories of God's presence and the darkness of His wrath, beginning now to be described in chapter 6. Most of the remaining chapters in Revelation have in view what will take place on the earth during the wondrous and horrible time of tribulation that will befall the earth near the end of history, as we know it. The troubles described in this text have certainly been part of the history of humanity, but they will be concentrated during the great tribulation, especially during the last 3½ years of that period. One purpose of this global tribulation is a display of divine justice on the rebellious nations of the earth.  19th century English pastor, Henry Alford, described this time of divine judgment as "the beating down of earthly power, the breaking up of earthly peace, the exhausting of earthly wealth, the destruction of earthly life" (Alford, The Greek Testament, IV:613). Let us stand in awe of God's power and justice and let us be deeply thankful to be saved, by God's grace, from the fearsome fury of His justice.

Revelation Series: This passage depicts the closing events of the tribulation, where the fifth seal reveals the souls of martyrs who gave their lives for Christ, their sacrifice symbolizing offerings poured out before God. They await justice until all who will die for their faith are complete. The sixth seal then brings cosmic upheaval and the visible return of Jesus, as the earth trembles and people hide in fear of His coming judgment. Unlike the rapture, this is Christ's glorious second coming, when He returns with His redeemed followers—clothed in white and radiant with His glory—to bring justice, light, and the fulfillment of God's final plan.
