Giving and generosity is talked about very often throughout scripture. Why is this? Because our God is a generous God. Every good gift that we have comes from Him. In this week's installment of our Sermon on the Mount series, Pastor Ryan shares about the giving nature of God. He breaks down what our giving says about our faith, and how we can become a part of something much greater than ourselves through generosity. Competition is meant to be fun. It can be motivating and encouraging. The ways we compete in sports, academics, music etc. is holy. It speaks to the parts of our soul that desire maybe a bit of what has been lost to sin. We love to see people move and perform in the beautiful ways in which they were created. We love to win. There is also the competition within ourselves to be faithful. To lean into Christ and his call. Along the way there are many temptations to cut corners, be envious, or maybe even quit but we push on to win the ultimate race.Luke 9:46-48 (ESV)An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. Episode Summary: As a parent, we try to do the best job we can raising our children. While children don't come with a “how-to” manual, God gives us wisdom in His word. Proverbs 22:6 tells us “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” So, what do we do, when our children choose their own path? On this episode, I chatted with Laine Lawson Craft and we discussed her story, her pain, her wounds, and now her sacred scars that came after walking a long journey with three prodigal children. Quotables from the episode: In simple terms, a prodigal child is challenged and gets off track despite being raised under the wisdom of God. I thought I was doing everything God destined me to do. Yet all three of my children succumbed to the enemy and encountered battles with depression, drugs, alcohol, and pornography, and I didn't even know how big the battle was. As a mother who tried to raise my children in the Lord, when they turned from Him, I experienced shame, guilt, and fear. We have a very dark world we're raising our kids in. The phone is the #1 tool our enemy uses against our kids. When we step out for the kingdom of God, we become a target for our children. Our son was high and drunk and in an Uber car when he encountered Jesus. He didn't have to clean up before God began working in his life. Every prayer we pray is captured in heaven. Prayer is your most powerful, essential weapon. God is creating a story that brings Him glory. The only way we have a story is with a Savior who redeems us. God redeems me every day. I know without a doubt it was the Lord who came in, rescued my children, and set them free. God underscored the message of hope that at no-one is too far gone, too messed up, for the hand of God to touch their heart and change their life. And that forever changed me. God loves you right where you are. God loves you and your prodigal. You don't have to clean up for God to come in, and rescue and deliver you. Don't give up “in the meantime” when your prodigal child may be mean while you are waiting for God to change their heart and their ways. You may be disappointed, discouraged, and at times hopeless, but don't give up. God has a great plan for your child, and He is the true parent of your child. He formed them into your womb and has plans for them and we can partner with God and trust Him that He will bring them home! Realize today that you are NOT in war with your defiant child you are in war with the darkness and evil of the world! Every night we have the choice, as our head lays down on our pillows. We can cry out to God and pour our hearts out to Him, giving Him our burdens. Or we can bottle it up and toss and turn. By Sarah Frazer “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.” - Psalm 55:22 (ESV) “Do you need help?” I asked the toddler struggling with the groceries. He grabbed the bag with spaghetti sauce, canned fruit, and ranch dressing. “I got it!” was the confident reply. The next thing I knew, a jar of spaghetti sauce was rolling down the driveway. My son ran after it and caught it before it broke into pieces. The bag was too heavy, but the toddler insisted that it wasn't. He needed to let me unload that burden for him. What heaviness do you hold today that needs to be unloaded? My toddler thought that he could carry it on his own, but that bag was too much. Often we face trials and burdens in our life that we think we can handle. In fact, we look at others and think they seem to be handling the same type of burdens just fine on their own. Only in our hearts we know that we can't hold up on the weight of the heaviness. I wonder if some of us need to admit that we need help. The world says, “You've got this!” and “You are enough.” This is not the way of the Bible. Our lives weren't meant to be lived independently. That isn't how God created us. As Christians we have something even better than doing life on our own. We have a God who is ready to carry our burdens for us. The Bible talks a lot about what to do with our burdens. The word used in Psalm 55:22 for “cast” means “throwing away.” This can mean literally throwing something out like garbage or figuratively throwing something away from us to remove something from our presence. We are called to cast or throw out those things in our lives that weigh us down. A burden can be anything in our hearts or minds that keeps us from living freely in Christ. It is a load or a task that requires effort. Throughout the Old and New Testament, God tells us what to do with our burdens. Psalm 68:19 says, “Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens.” I love the word “daily.” It assumes that we have things weighing us down each day. You and I know what it is like to release something to God one day, but then the next day, we find ourselves worried and worn down from picking it back up again. God walks with us each day. He is there to help us each time we find ourselves weighed down. In the New Testament, Jesus talks about burdens in Matthew 11:28-30. He says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” We still might carry the weight of something, but sharing it with Jesus allows us to not bear the thing all by ourselves. Jesus calls us here in Matthew 11 to live a life dependent on Him. 1 Peter 5:6-7 says that we can cast our anxieties on him. Other translations change the word for anxieties to worries, fears, troubles, and cares. Those things that keep us awake at night or occupy our minds during the day are anxieties. Why can we bring them to God? Peter says it is because God cares for us. He loves us. Sometimes, we ask others around us to help carry our burdens, but they get tired, too. They have their own burdens to carry. God is never tired and nor does His love ever run out. We can always come to God and hand over our cares. How do we do this? We pray. Prayer is our connection to God. He is always listening (Psalm 116:1), and He answers us (Psalm 116:2). As we pray, we tell God everything in our hearts. You might think, “But He already knows it.” Yes, but He knows that when we share those cares and hurts and burdens with Him, we are lighter. Every night we have the choice, as our head lays down on our pillows. We can cry out to God and pour our hearts out to Him, giving Him our burdens. Or we can bottle it up and toss and turn. If I try to handle things on my own, I always end up failing. But if I rely on God, letting my burdens fall on His strong shoulders, I am able to rest each night. Intersecting Faith & Life: What is the burden that you are carrying right now? Pray, asking God, to take this burden away or lighten the load. Know that God is in control and is working everything for our good (Romans 8:28). How is knowing God is in control and working all things out a comfort for you today? God Reveals His Norming Norm We are often arbitrary in how we evaluate ourselves and others – But God has a perfect standard we are evaluated by – the Truth He has revealed to us in His holy word. Read Exodus 34:1-9 Dictionary.com defines truth as the actual state of a matter; conformity with fact or reality. What is the opposite of truth? Falsehood, or lies. Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates. Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolators, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. -Rev. 22:14-15 (ESV) All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. -2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV) Every biblical command God gives is based on His truth and is to help you flourish as His child. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. Romans 12:9-17 NIV I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. Victorious Weapons I believe the Lord would have us consider two points today.First Point:Jesus' victory at the cross over sin, sickness and death has ushered us into the family of God as adopted sons and daughters. I confess, I struggle with fully trusting Jesus in this area. I don't have a long enough horizon or I don't believe big enough. Jesus is throwing down the gauntlet today. Can we develop a level of optimism about this passage? I hope the Lord can help me trust him to this extent. I'm not afraid to ask but I confess I don't often believe it as much as I should.
