Carson I do not think what the Bible says about the love of God can long survive at the forefront of our thinking if it is abstracted from the sovereignty of God, the holiness of God, the wrath of God, the providence of God, the personhood of God, to mention only a few non-negotiable elements of basic Christianity. The result, of course, is the love of God in our culture has been purged of anything the culture finds uncomfortable. The love of God has been sanitized, democratized, and, above all, sentimentalized.

Good news: every family has conflict. Matthew 5.9 (ESV) Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are the peacemakers. If there is any place on earth where Christians are committed to peacemaking, it ought to be in our homes. 4 practical convictions to be peacemakers in our families: 1. Overlook what can honestly be overlooked. Proverbs 19.11 (ESV) Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense. Some things really are small enough to cover with grace. 2. When something must be addressed, lead with mercy. Colossians 3.13 (NLT) Make allowance for each other's faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Homes get healthier when grace flows. 3. Own your part first. Jesus said to get the log out of your own eye first before trying to remove the speck from someone else's. A real apology owns my part without immediately redirecting attention to the other person's failures. 4. Seek reconciliation – don't settle for relief or “victory”. Romans 12.18 (ESV) If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 2 Corinthians 5.18 (NIV) God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation He can make hot-tempered people gentler. He can make families healthier. Episode Summary:  The world has thrown a lot at us the last few years. Between the pandemic, economy, and war around the world, many are shaken, worried, or scared. But Christians don't have to succumb to these same feelings. When the pandemic first hit, people around the world were rocked. That's when I had to choose to reflect on what I know to be true about Him. These truths change everything for believers. Join me with Kathy Howard for how to keep trusting God in difficult times. Quotables from the episode: God is all-powerful and in control. Nothing surprises Him and nothing has entered their lives that He did not allow. God sees you. God cares about every detail of your lives. God is working even if you don't see it. And in the meantime, God is always present with you. Spend even just 5 minutes brainstorming the implications of one truth about God. For instance, if God is all-powerful, what does that mean for your life? For your family? For the world? The author of the Bible is the only author who sits with us when we read his book! To keep trusting God in difficult times, we have to know God. We get to know him by being in his word. The Bible is not primarily about us—it's about God, and understanding who He is. Difficulties remind us of our need for God. Fiery trials refine our faith. Paul opens his first act with words like, blessed, predestined, adopted, chosen, holy, and blameless. These are all words Paul uses to describe who we are because of what Christ has done for us. Romans 12:1-2Summary: If I am going to live successfully, I must allow God to replace old though habits with new biblical patterns. I'm learning to think for life!  Intro:  When we think about habits, we normally consider the things that we do. Today we are going to talk about habits in the way we think. If we think about it, we can identify habits in our way of thinking or mindsets that can be either good or bad, helpful or hurtful. The Bible teaches us to replace the unbiblical though patterns with new godly ways of thinking. When I refuse this, I end up wandering like Israel in the dessert.1.     I continue to wander when I live with an entitlement mindset.Numbers 11:4–6 (ESV) Now the rabble that was among them had a strong craving. And the people of Israel also wept again and said, “Oh that we had meat to eat!5We remember the fish we ate in Egypt that cost nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic.6But now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at.”The answer : A Grace mentality.  I move forward by  trusting the Gods grace.2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV) But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.           2.    I continue to wander when I live with a victim mindset.Exodus 14:10–14 (ESV) When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they feared greatly. And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord. 11They said to Moses, “Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt?12Is not this what we said to you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians'? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”13And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. Romans 12:1-2Summary: If I am going to live successfully, I must allow God to replace old though habits with new biblical patterns. I'm learning to think for life!  Intro:  When we think about habits, we normally consider the things that we do. Today we are going to talk about habits in the way we think. If we think about it, we can identify habits in our way of thinking or mindsets that can be either good or bad, helpful or hurtful. The Bible teaches us to replace the unbiblical though patterns with new godly ways of thinking. When I refuse this, I end up wandering like Israel in the dessert.1.     I continue to wander when I live with an entitlement mindset.Numbers 11:4–6 (ESV) Now the rabble that was among them had a strong craving. And the people of Israel also wept again and said, “Oh that we had meat to eat!5We remember the fish we ate in Egypt that cost nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic.6But now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at.”The answer : A Grace mentality.  I move forward by  trusting the Gods grace.2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV) But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.           2.    I continue to wander when I live with a victim mindset.Exodus 14:10–14 (ESV) When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they feared greatly. And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord. 11They said to Moses, “Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt?12Is not this what we said to you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians'? Many of us like to change with the current times; we ‘hop' from one source to another rather than be consistent. We must develop a healthier backbone. Life takes a lot of unexpected twists and turns. Sometimes it feels like we are always wandering from on disruptive event to another. It is hard at times to see how God is working and moving when things are uncomfortable and not ideal. In the middle of it all we all yearn for something more. A promised land maybe. A simple life. Sometimes we meet God in the wilderness and it changes us, makes us better. More faithful. This was what happened to Moses. Nothing for him seemed easy but God was present through it all. Exodus 2:1-10 (ESV)Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman. The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months. When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank. And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him. Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it. When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews' children.” Then his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, “Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, “Go.” So the girl went and called the child's mother. And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son.
