It was overflowing, dangerous, and impassable. And yet, God told Israel to walk into it. Not after it settled. Not after it made sense. He said, Step in now.Our springboard for today's discussion is:"…as soon as those bearing the ark had come as far as the Jordan... the waters coming down from above stood and rose up in a heap very far away." — Joshua 3:15-16 (ESV)There's a lesson here that cuts right to the heart of what it means to trust God. The waters didn't part until the priests' feet touched the edge. Obedience preceded the miracle. The setting, of course, is different, as Lamentations follows on the destruction of the Jerusalem (586 BC) and the Solomonic Temple, and the Babylonian exile. However different the setting, however the thematic patterns are everywhere evident. For example: "Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." Lamentations 3:22-23 (NIV) "For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed." Malachi 3:6 (ESV) There are many, many more pattern-repetitions throughout the Bible. True Stories Pt. 3 – Loving the Unlovely & Inconvenient By Louie Marsh, 8-25-2024 (2 Sam 15.23–16.14) chronicles the story of David and his followers who escaped Jerusalem along this route after David's son Absalom had declared himself king. King Zedekiah of Judah used the road when he tried to escape the advancing Chaldeans in 586/587 B.C. Josephus tells us that the Tenth Roman Legion used this Jericho‑Jerusalem road on their way to besiege Jerusalem in A.D. 69. When Mark Twain traveled along the Jericho Road during his 1867 pilgrimage, his party employed "two gorgeous young Arab sheikhs" armed with cargoes of swords, guns, pistols and daggers to protect them from imaginary Beduin marauders. Lewis when two of the characters are faced with devastating circumstances. Lewis describes it by saying, “I hope no one who read this book has been quite as miserable as Susan and Lucy were that night; but if you have been - if you've been up all night and cried till you have no more tears left in you - you will know that there comes in the end a sort of quietness. You feel as if nothing was ever going to happen again.” When I read those words, I wept because I, too, had been like those characters. I'd suffered through nights of such intense sorrow that I've felt my heart would melt and my tears would drown me. In many cases, my tears ended up soaking my pillow to the point where I'd have to turn it over. Whether you are a Christian or not, we've all experienced some type of suffering. If you and I would sit down together, across the table maybe, with cups of tea or coffee, we would share about the suffering each of us have faced. Our presence together provides a sense of shared grief that helps us. Psalm 46 is a powerful psalm that speaks about suffering. What I love about this psalm is the answer to our suffering is God's presence. The very first verse talks about God being near. It says that in all of our troubles, God is a “very present help.” (ESV) The word present means both time and space. God, who lives outside of time, entered into it in the beginning of Genesis. “In the beginning, God…” Our mighty, awesome, transcendent God entered into time for us. That word present also means space. God is also physically, spiritually, and emotionally close to us. He is near us physically! The Bible references God being near to us several times. (Psalm 145:18, Psalm 34:18, Philippians 4:5-7, James 4:8) When we find ourselves suffering, we want God to come in and fix it. I know I've prayed for diseases to be cured, grief to be comforted, and miracles to take place in the hearts of the people I love. God sometimes answers yes, but sometimes God has a different plan than my plan. The hard truth is this: life is filled with suffering. Instead of focusing on how God doesn't answer our prayers or how life doesn't turn out the way we had planned, God invites us to a deeper, more intimate relationship with Him. God draws closer to us in our suffering. He sits with us in our grief and sorrow. Depression has been my companion for almost fifteen years. In this suffering, I have found a deeper intimacy with God than ever before. God has not answered my prayer to be free from sorrow and depression. Instead, He has given me something that is so much better: His presence. In Psalm 46:7 we read, “The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.” (EVS) My suffering has revealed the true character of God, and it has become the thing that brings me the most joy in my life. In this verse, the psalmist says that God is a “Lord of Hosts.” This means He is in charge of angel armies. This God, who is all-powerful, is “with us.” According to this verse. He is close. God is also described to be the “God of Jacob.” This is a personal God who knows all about us. This God, who is deeply personal, is “our fortress.” In this verse we see a personal God who is all-powerful. A powerful God who is incredibly personal. In God's presence we find out who He really is. Over the years of suffering I've seen that we have a God who is both good and all sovereign. When suffering threatens our faith, causes us to doubt, may we run back to God and His presence. It is there we find truths to comfort out hearts. If you find yourself with sorrow and suffering too hard to bear, run to God. He is a present, safe, and powerful God who is ready to comfort you. Find Him in the pages of the Bible. Wise Men Still Worship Him - Matthew 2:1-12 Wise men followed the guidance of 2 stars. - V. 1-2 But who were these wise men from the east, and why did Pastor Danny say they followed the guidance of 2 stars? The word Magi only appears in one book of the Greek Old Testament. Can you tell me which one it is? In the book of Daniel, Daniel is described as having a wisdom from God that made him excel all of the Magi (the wise men) of both Babylon and then Persia. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. - Proverbs 9:10 (ESV) There is a man in your kingdom in whom is the spirit of the holy gods. In the days of your father, light and understanding and wisdom... of the gods were found in him, and King Nebuchadnezzar your father... made him CHIEF of the magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and astrologers, because an excellent spirit, knowledge, and understanding to interpret dreams, explain riddles, and solve problems were found in this Daniel… - Daniel 5:11-12 (ESV) I believe that the wise men who came to seek the Jewish King came because they had been influenced by Daniel and his prophecies. Centuries had passed; their knowledge was incomplete, but they followed the knowledge they had. And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever. - Dan. 12:3 (ESV) An insecure king is counseled by Israel's unmoved shepherds. - V. 3-6 What a contrast! The Gentile wise men with limited revelation travelled hundreds of miles to seek out the Savior of the world. The unmoved shepherds of Israel couldn't be bothered to walk 5 miles to see if the Messiah was here. We are too often religiously educated far beyond the level of our spiritual obedience. Wise men find the Real Star and shun the fake king. - V. 7-12 God led Israel toward the promised land using a pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night that stood above the Holy tent. Here another pillar was shining directly above the Holy child, and led the wise man to God incarnate. What does it mean to worship someone or something? Worship means to ascribe worth to someone or something. A worshipper of Jesus shows in word and deed and how much they value Jesus!

What are some of the benefits of wisdom? Blessed is the one who finds wisdom and the one who gets understanding for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. Proverbs 3:13-14. ESV There's no limit to your ability to gain wisdom or to give it out. This passage and in other places in Proverbs, we find that wisdom is something we get from God, not just from our experience. And we can give it without limits. Our wisdom can be used to serve and bless others. But I'm talking about the wisdom that comes from God. Wisdom is referred to as a lady. The Message says in verse 14, "She's worth far more than money in the bank; her friendship is better than a big salary." Wisdom comes from our ability to abide in Jesus. When we're plugged into our relationship with Jesus, and we listen to the Holy Spirit, God gives us his wisdom. We can then share that wisdom by our actions. We don't need to share it with our words necessarily. Today, let's practice gaining and listening to the wisdom from God. Don't forget to try this out! Our next practice begins in a few days. His grace frees us to become who He says we are. We can trade our pain for purpose. Our fear for courage. Our shame for significance. "Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion; instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their lot; therefore, in their land they shall possess a double portion; they shall have everlasting joy." (Isaiah 61:7 ESV) ***** Hi there, and welcome to the Women World Leaders Podcast. My name is Kelly Williams Hale and I'm your host today on Celebrating God's Grace. Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I'm an author, speaker and coach leading women through inner healing and intimacy work. I teach women how to get past proving their worth and step into the purpose and plan God has for them. And so today, I want to share a message that the Lord gave me around shame. It is a loaded topic. To be clear, shame is an emotion. Like fear, guilt, anger, overwhelm and happiness. Shame is simple a feeling. I found this definition by Brene Brown, the author of Dare to be brave: Shame is the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing we are flawed and therefore unworthy of love and belonging. The roots of shame often come from our childhood. It's the feeling we get when we do something that disappoints the people we love. Have you ever heard the words, “shame on you?” Parents often use this phrase to correct their children when they've made a mistake. If you're a mom listening, it's super important for us to be mindful of the words we speak. Proverbs 18:21 says: Life and death are in the power of the tongue. We obvious don't want to speak words of shame on our children. And speaking of shame, mama's please release any feelings of shame that you may have spoken. I have an 11-year-old and understand the frustration when our kids misbehave or don't follow instruction. My point is our words are so powerful. A better way to correct, is to let them know that WHAT they did is not okay. We separate and support WHO they are from the behavior. We can often feel ashamed when we mess up, our behavior. But praise God that we can go to him and repent – ask forgiveness and remember WHO we are. Psalm 139:14 says “we are fearfully and wonderfully made” God knows we're going to make mistakes. He knows I've made a lot of mistakes. And the enemy would like nothing more than for me to feel ashamed. Feel the shame that I've disappointed God and how could he love me. But sisters, God loves us so much! Romans 8:37-39 NIV 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. John 3:16 NIV 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Satan uses the feelings of shame to make us question our value and worth. When we feel unloved or not belonging, we can often undermine our own success. By believing we're undeserving of rewards, celebration, or accolades. Have you ever said, I'm going to start my diet tomorrow? And you have all the best intentions to “be good” – but your coworker brought donuts and just one won't hurt… So, you have the donut – but beat yourself up for failing again, feeling shame that you can't stick to anything, etc. etc. Sisters, we all do this! So how do we release shame? Before I share, I'd like to tell you a story. It's about Will Smith. Do you remember the Academy Awards ceremony back in March of this year, which is 2022 – Will Smith was expected to win his very first Oscar for King Richard, the story of Serena and Venus Williams and their dad's influence on their tennis career. And if you recall, Chris Rock was the host and made a joke about Jada, Will's wife, starring in GI Jane 2. Because of her bald head. So, Will Smith walks up - onto the stage - and slapped Chris Rock. It was SHOCKING. Will Smith is widely known as a likeable guy and this reaction from him was totally out of character. When I watched the replay the next morning – I immediately recognized what happened. It was self-sabotage. Will Smith didn't feel like he was worthy of that ultimate achievement. We can sabotage our own success because deep down, we don't believe we deserve it. Shame can be a trauma-response. I believe Will Smith's response to Chris Rock's joke, subconsciously, was deep-seated shame for unresolved trauma that he experienced in life. Many of us struggle with unresolved trauma. This is why we all need Jesus. His grace covers our pain and shortcoming. His grace FREES us to become who we ARE in Christ. We can trade our pain for purpose. Our fear for courage. Our shame for significance. A sidebar. If somebody acts out of character, it's usually because something's going on in their life. Let's strive to be more curious and empathetic before we go to judgement. Ok, so how do we deal with shame. First of all, we recognize who we are. Who God says we are. 1 Peter 2:9 ESV But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. When the enemy's lies begin to creep up like, who do you think you are? OR remember what you did? We must ACTIVATE the authority that Jesus gave us with the Holy Spirit. Luke 10:19 19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. 2 Corinthians 3:17 ESV Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. When I was young and didn't have a personal relationship with Jesus, it felt like God was just waiting for me to mess up. When we are in Christ, His grace is sufficient. And we can release those shameful feelings we have when we've messed up. Satan who would like nothing better than for us to be separated from God. We tend to want to hide from the Lord when we sin. We isolate. And that makes the enemy so happy. Let's choose to run to God. He's not surprised. He knows and wants us to remember who we are. Romans 8:1 ESV There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. I'm going to close in prayer.

Many people have wondered how a book written thousands of years ago and translated hundreds of times could be reliable. In this message, Chase Gardner tackles this question, offering context on Bible variants and what all of it should mean for you and your faith.Message Notes:Whether we're new to Christianity or we've been Christians for years, there are questions we think about and sometimes argue about with others. Over the next five weeks, we'll take a look at the top five questions our community has.Is the Bible Reliable?In the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, one character states, “The Bible is a product of man, my dear. Not of God. The Bible did not fall magically from the clouds. Man created it as a historical record of tumultuous times, and it has evolved through countless translations, additions, and revisions. History has never had a definitive version of the book…” Bart Ehrman in his book, Misquoting Jesus, he states, “Not only do we not have the originals, but we don't even have the first copies of the originals, or the copies of the copies, or the copies of the copies of the copies or the originals.” New Testament:Three questions we should answer to know whether we can trust the Bible: 1. How many discrepancies do we have in the New Testament? (variants) 2. What is the quality of the variants? 3. Do these affect our theology? In fact, 70% of the variants we have are spelling differences. Not errors…just differences. If we add up spelling differences and non-translatable differences, how many of those 400,000 variants are those? 99% 1/4 of 1% of the variants are viable and meaningful. One example is Mark 9:29 and whether the Scripture says “prayer” or “prayer and fasting.” These things are not critical to the foundations of the Gospel. Even Bart Ehrman in the back of his book states, “Essential Christian belief is not affected by textual variant in the manuscript tradition of the new testament.” Old Testament: For many years, we based our Old Testament on three collections of the entire Old Testament from about 900 AD. In the 1940's, scrolls of all the books in the Old Testament except Esther were found from at least 100 BC. Only minor differences (not affecting the meaning) occurred in that one-thousand-year gap.
