Brit and Sara interview Tee-Ta Walker and Tiffany Scott. This dynamic duo are the hosts of “Conversations with Tee-Ta and Tiffany: A Black Girl & A White Girl.” Their platform is all about having honest conversations about race. In this special episode, we chat about how to get comfortable with the uncomfortable and mindfully approach conversations on race. Stay in touch with Tee-Ta & Tiffany by visiting their website for more! Follow A Black Girl and A White Girl @ablackgirlawhitegirl on Facebook and Instagram. You can also check out A Black Girl and A White Girl on YouTube. Be sure to tune in, listen, and subscribe to their podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, and wherever else you stream podcasts. Follow us @MindfulGrooving, Brittany @BrittanyHarlin and Sara @GoodStuffSara. For more Egun Artist Productions, visit our website. Be sure to LEAVE US A VOICEMAIL and let us know what's on your mind! About Tee-Ta & Tiffany: Tee-Ta Walker and Tiffany Scott met at a business conference in Florida in 2018. After discovering that they were both Brand Strategists, they hit it off. Many similarities followed; however, the most significant disparity (ignorance and privilege - on Tiffany's part) was where the friendship grew at lightning speed. Weird right? After a very candid conversation about race at dinner, they knew they had to bring the conversations they were having out from behind closed doors, and 'A BLACK GIRL A WHITE GIRL' podcast and videocast was born. Tee-Ta received her MBA in Marketing Management. As the founder of Tee-Ta Walker & Associates, LLC, a Creative and Analytical Brand Strategist, she helps businesses build a brand that connects, relates, and achieves marketplace influence. Tiffany, the Australian native, honed her skills working as a Brand and Marketing Director for international powerhouse brands, re-injecting life and vibrancy into a household name as iconic as Speedo. The founder of You Me She Collective, Tiffany, has helped businesses create brands focused on social good. When Tee-Ta and Tiffany aren't building brands, you'll find them on their 'A Black Girl A White Girl' platform having honest conversations about race. Their mission is to help others find the courage to have everyday conversations to end inequities, biased behaviors, and racism. THE STORYTELLER'S MISSION WITH ZENA DELL LOWEEPISODE 67 – The Distorted Character Qualities of Villains - Part 3Follow along with the cheat sheet below, or DOWNLOAD FULL TRANSCRIPTS FOR FREE on the podcast page of our website. EPISODE DESCRIPTION – For the last two weeks, we've been reviewing the 21 character qualities that apply to heroes (from episode 57) and began applying them to villains, since these same traits often apply to villains though in slightly twisted ways. Today, we look at traits 11-15 from that list, applying each to villains. Trait number 11: Villains are willing to do the hard thing, and sometimes they take pleasure in it. (By hard thing, I mean stuff that would cause a hero to struggle emotionally with the morality of a thing, like "killing" someone even if that person is evil.)Trait number 12: Villains show no remorse when they mess up or fail, even if others have been hurt by it.Trait number 13: Villains are fearless - which is why the pose such a threat to the hero.Trait number 14: Villains are flawless, meaning that they are seemingly impenetrable or unbeatable. They have no (or few) weaknesses to exploit.Trait number 15: Villains don't change. They are set in their ways. Unwavering. UP NEXT – Next week, we'll finish up this series on heroic character qualities as applied to villains by looking at the bonus material from episode 57. EPISODE DESCRIPTION – Last week, we began reviewing the 21 character qualities that apply to heroes (from episode 57) and began applying them to villains, since these same traits often apply to villains, though in slightly twisted ways. Today, we looked at traits 6-10 from that list, applying each to villains. Trait number six: Villains must have something to believe in. Their "cause" must be greater than themselves - even if their cause IS themself.Trait number seven: For Villains to win, it must cost something. Just like for heroes, there must be a personal cost to be paid (which is why their cause must be great).Trait number eight: Villains must be merciless and unrelenting. They can't stop to wonder if they're wrong. Human nature reveals that to justify their actions, they must harden their hearts and become MORE dogmatic, arrogant, and certain.Trait number nine: Their mission must matter. The stakes must be high, either because of the carnage they may leave in their path, or because of the personal cost to their soul.Trait number ten: Villains must take action, which is why heroes must fight. UP NEXT – Next week, we'll continue with heroic character quality number eleven and continue going through the list to compare how these heroic traits are distorted when it comes to the villain.OUR ONLINE PLATFORMThe Storyteller's Mission online platform is finally up and running! THE STORYTELLER'S MISSION WITH ZENA DELL LOWEEPISODE 65 – The Distorted Character Qualities of VillainsFollow along with the cheat sheet below, or DOWNLOAD FULL TRANSCRIPTS FOR FREE on the podcast page of our website. EPISODE DESCRIPTION – Last week, we launched into a discussion about what makes a great villain since villains must be formidable foes for your heroes. If you don't have a great villain, then you won't be able to show the heroism of your main character. In Episode 57 of this podcast: 21 heroic character qualities that you can reveal in story, I shared 21 traits that most heroes have. But the interesting thing about this is that many of those character qualities apply to villains as well. Today, we go through traits 1-5 of that very same list from the villain's point of view. How does that character trait change if the character to whom it applies is the villain? Trait number one: Villains must be able to think fast under pressure.Trait number two: Villains must be good at one or more things. Moreover, they have to be better at those things than anybody else in the story world.Trait number three: Villains must be able to think outside of the box. They come up with clever plans; things that the hero never saw coming.Trait number four: Villains stuff their personal issues, not for the good of others, but for their personal goals. Or, if they don't stuff their feelings, they give full vent to their rage and incorporate personal vengeance into their already formulated plans.Trait number five: For villains, no matter how bad it gets, they do what they intended to do, for the reasons they intended to do it. In other words, they just don't give up. They keep going. They're relentless. UP NEXT – Next week, we'll start with heroic character quality number six and continue going through the list to compare how these heroic traits are distorted when it comes to the villain. EPISODE DESCRIPTION – Recently, a long-time listener of The Storyteller's Mission reached out to ask my opinion as to the best movie villains and why, so this podcast episode is dedicated to Donna Mumma as I attempt to answer her question. In essence, I argue that three main areas to concern yourself with as a writer when it comes to constructing your villains include:What motivates your villain? Justify their choices. We don't do things just because we're evil. We always have a reason. What past event has twisted his or her morality (because Villains proceed from a flawed sense of justice and moralityWhat qualities make him or her a worthy opponent? They can't be idiots. They must be smart, clever, brilliant, relentless -- they must be as good or better than the hero in order to be a worthy foe.UP NEXT - TBD OUR ONLINE PLATFORMThe Storyteller's Mission online platform is finally up and running! Often they go on too long, or sometimes, they cut out too soon. How can we know when to cut out of our scenes, and what are some things we need to accomplish before doing so? In this episode, we discuss three key elements of how to construct a scene, including:1. How there needs to be some kind of emotional shift in each scene2. These are best accomplished using visual cues3. In so far as possible, each scene should end on one of the characters – whoever is most jangled up or emotionally changed as a result of what's transpired UP NEXT - TBD OUR ONLINE PLATFORMThe Storyteller's Mission online platform is finally up and running! EPISODE DESCRIPTION – Today, I want to talk about an ongoing problem, which is a tendency for writers to have passive characters. Characters who are simply reacting rather than driving the action of the story. Things just keep happening to them. One of the reasons so many people struggle with this is because oftentimes in their story, another character (rather than the main character) is actually in charge. Someone else is calling the shots. So, how do you have your main character driving the action of your story when someone else is calling the shots? I've come up with a list of 10 techniques writers can use to help keep their main characters in the driver's seat. Today, we'll cover the first 5:1. Give your character choices.2. Number two, make them proactive.3. Number three, have him practice diplomacy. 4. Give him a personal side goal that he can attain. 5. They're acquiring their resources. THE STORYTELLER'S MISSION WITH ZENA DELL LOWEEPISODE 59 – How to Keep Getting Re-hired as a Writer-for-HireDOWNLOAD FULL TRANSCRIPTS FOR FREE on the podcast page of our website. EPISODE DESCRIPTION – For many writers, the best way to make a living as a writer isn't to publish or sell your own original project, but to be hired by individuals or companies who need you to write a project they want to have done. Sometimes, these are one offs, but many times you may be hired by a company who has a lot of projects in the pipeline. The question is, how do you give yourself the best chance of being re-hired by these companies after the first project is done? The answer is simple, but not easy. There are basically three things you need:Be Fast - meaning deliver a completed project on time and within a reasonable timeframe.Be Good - meaning make sure the end product is excellent. This also means finding out specifically what the client needs so that you can be sure to deliver it..Be Nice - meaning be easy to work with. The most important quality that client's will look for in the "easy to work with" category is whether or not you can take notes. If you can deliver all three of these every time you're hired, you will absolutely be hired again, and again and again. You will be like liquid gold to your client. THE STORYTELLER'S MISSION WITH ZENA DELL LOWEEPISODE 58 – Five Additional Tools and Solutions for Godly StorytellingFollow along with the cheat sheet below, or DOWNLOAD FULL TRANSCRIPTS FOR FREE on the podcast page of our website. EPISODE DESCRIPTION – For the last several weeks, we have been analyzing the five primary keynotes or principles of godly storytelling: 1. A commitment to truth telling2. A commitment to do no harm3. Promoting involvement rather than voyeurism4. Portraying good and evil accurately5. The possibility of redemption.Today, we examine five final tools or solutions to help us achieve a final product that glorifies God while also allowing us to create art that is truly excellent. These include:1. Reflect a genuinely Christian worldview – which means we may need to brush up on our theology since we have to know it to be able to reflect it in our work.2. Live in consultation – when in doubt, talk it out, which means finding people who can speak to our work in terms of how it holds up theologically, artistically, and in accordance with human psychology.3. Go back to the well of creativity – which means we need to become better artists, because there's always a solution to the challenge our work presents. Instead of going for the easy, trite way out, go back to the well of creativity and challenge yourself to be better.4. Be in touch with your own sin nature – stop approaching the work from a childish perspective, or condescending to our audience by offering simplistic, childish solutions. 5. Resist the temptation to “fix it,” which will be dealt with in depth next week. UP NEXT - Next week, we will discuss why we need to resist the temptation to try to “fix” problems in story. THE STORYTELLER'S MISSION WITH ZENA DELL LOWEEPISODE 56 – The Primary Purpose of Art is to Promote Human ConnectionFollow along with the cheat sheet below, or DOWNLOAD FULL TRANSCRIPTS FOR FREE on the podcast page of our website. The possibility of redemption. Today, in light of these keynotes, Zena asks, what is the primary purpose of our art? She goes on to argue that it is the same in art as it is in real life: Life is about connection. Life is about relationship. None of it matters outside of relationship. God has designed us to be in relationship, with Him first, and with others, second. It is our primary condition, our primary need, and our primary struggle, because at our core, we are dying, longing for intimate connection. Zena goes on to say that anything that constitutes a breach of intimacy, anything that we create that prevents true connection, ought to be avoided at all costs. And oftentimes, the very thing that prohibits true connection is an overly simplistic view of the world or explanation of the sin or pain with which we grapple. Nothing turns people away faster than a banal, contrived platitude. Nothing shuts us down quicker. Nothing alienates us faster. Thus, the last thing we need to do in our work is resort to preaching, because we actually cause more harm. The goal of our art is connection. We create a picture with our characters that allows others to see themselves, their struggles, their pain. When we see that someone else struggles with the same things we do, we don't feel so alone. Preaching doesn't do that. Vulnerability and authenticity does. UP NEXT - Next week, we will address the question of language in story. Is it ever okay for a Christian to use swear words? THE STORYTELLER'S MISSION WITH ZENA DELL LOWEEPISODE 55 – What Constitutes Redemption and How Do Characters Achieve It? Follow along with the cheat sheet below, or DOWNLOAD FULL TRANSCRIPTS FOR FREE on the podcast page of our website. EPISODE DESCRIPTION For the last several weeks, we have been analyzing the five primary keynotes or principles of godly storytelling: 1. A commitment to truth telling2. A commitment to do no harm3. Promoting involvement rather than voyeurism4. Portraying good and evil accurately5. The possibility of redemption. Today, I finish unpacking keynote number 5, because in addition to making sure that our stories offer our characters the possibility of redemption, we need to understand what redemption actually looks like. It isn't as simple as making sure our characters end up doing the right thing. They must do the right thing for the right reasons, even as they discern between the so-called right thing and the actual right thing. Since we live in a fallen world, sometimes the right thing isn't as clear as we'd like it to be. In these types of situations, characters who try to uphold the spirit of the law rather than the letter of the law are the noble and godly characters, whereas those who hold to unrelenting rules are legalists – not moral at all. If we don't have a clear understanding of this as writers, we are in danger of leading our audience's astray. UP NEXT Next week, we will address the question of language in story. Is it ever okay for a Christian to use swear words? THE STORYTELLER'S MISSION WITH ZENA DELL LOWEEPISODE 54 – A Good Story Leaves Room for The Possibility of Redemption Follow along with the cheat sheet below, or DOWNLOAD FULL TRANSCRIPTS FOR FREE on the podcast page of our website. EPISODE DESCRIPTION – For the last several weeks, we have been analyzing the principles of godly storytelling, and I've argued that there are five primary keynotes that ought to guide our writing. 1. A commitment to truth telling2. A commitment to do no harm3. Promoting involvement rather than voyeurism, and last week;4. Portraying good and evil accurately Today, I'd like to present keynote #5 5. The possibility of redemption. These five keynotes work together. They go hand in hand, overlapping, relying on each other, which is why today's keynote can only be understood in the context of the other four. It's an argument that builds on each brick, and leads to a logical conclusion. The foundation starts with keynote number one – we always start with the truth. From there, we derive the other principles and evaluate our pre-conceived ideas in light of each of these tenets. UP NEXT - Next week, we will unpack this notion further. THE STORYTELLER'S MISSION WITH ZENA DELL LOWEEPISODE 53 – How to Portray Good and Evil in StoryFollow along with the cheat sheet below. Or DOWNLOAD FULL TRANSCRIPTS FOR FREE on the podcast page of our website.EPISODE DESCRIPTION - A few weeks ago, I asked the question, “Is your story good before God,” which launched us into a series outlining 5 keynotes for godly storytelling. A commitment to truth-telling. A commitment to do no harm.Promoting involvement or empathy instead of voyeurism. Today, I'd like to present keynote #4: Portraying Good versus Evil accurately. There's a number of issues involved in this. For starters, you want to be sure at the end of your story that the good comes out better than the evil is bad. In other words, the good portrayed must be genuinely good – and it must be worth it. Whatever suffering or pain or sacrifices the character makes to uphold it, must be truly honorable and praiseworthy. Any character who “dies” while standing for something good, if the good isn't ultimately worth it or noble, we will hate them for their sacrifice. We also have to work hard to make sure we don't have a misguided notion of good. For example, many Christians have adopted the unspoken rule that a “good” story is one that is inspirational. It should build people up and make them feel good. It must have a happy ending. But is this true? Tragedies are stories that damn the characters to redeem the audience. Furthermore, not everything in this world ends up being redeemed. So there is room in God's economy for hopelessness. UP NEXT - Next week, we will unpack this notion further. There is room in God's economy for hopelessness, yes, however, the possibility of redemption must be offered as well.SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS OUR NEW ONLINE PLATFORMThe Storyteller's Mission online platform is finally up and running! THE STORYTELLER'S MISSION WITH ZENA DELL LOWEEPISODE 52 – How To Tell The Truth Without Violating Your Audience Follow along with the cheat sheet below, which lists the main points for this episode. Or DOWNLOAD FULL TRANSCRIPTS FOR FREE on the podcast page of our website. EPISODE DESCRIPTION - Last week, we discussed the question of how to make your story good before God. I argued that the number one criteria was to tell the truth, the whole truth, about the human experience, which means including the true consequences of our actions when characters engage in sin. But this begs the question, can we therefore show sex, language, and violence in a gratuitous way, so long as it's "true" behavior for the characters in that world? The answer is no, because in addition to telling the truth, there is another principle we must adhere to, namely, we must not willingly harm our audience, OR our actors, OR our crew - the responsibility is huge if you're a filmmaker. The key principles to help us avoid harming any of the people in these categories include:1. We must wrestle and labor over what we choose to show.2. We must live in consultation and constantly see if our work passes the test.3. We must limit the potential for Voyeurism and promote the possibility of Involvement. In other words, it's not so much WHAT we show, it's HOW we show it. We must show it in a way that forces all parties to emotionally engage with the characters, to feel their pain and suffering, to empathize. Rather than to detach. UP NEXT - Next week, we will continue to explore additional principles for making your story good before God.
