From being inspired by the structure of companies like Pizza Hut and McDonalds, to creating a global fitness phenomenon, Dave's story is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. He and Chuck transformed a college dropout story into a consulting firm, and then into a franchising legacy! Even in the face of adversity, like the sudden pivot during the COVID-19, Anytime Fitness demonstrated unmatched resilience, transitioning from celebrating major achievements to navigating a world in lockdown - and emerged stronger!  Commitment runs deep, literally under the skin, with customers inking their allegiance at the brand's very own tattoo parlor.  With a diverse portfolio that includes Waxing the City, Basecamp Fitness, and The Bar Method, the focus remains on global expansion, now with more locations opening internationally than domestically.   Pioneering the digital transformation of fitness, Anytime Fitness integrates cutting-edge Apple Fitness Plus content into their app, offering digital gym access and solidifying their bond with consumers. Dave celebrates the spirit of franchising and service-oriented brands, emphasizing the importance of listening to franchisees. With AI-driven personalization, the brand aims to revolutionize member motivation and health improvement. As for community impact, Dave is actively educating policymakers on the value of franchising and supporting both franchisees and franchisors. In a heartfelt conclusion, Dave encourages following your passions and is generously offering personal insights to those interested in the franchise industry.

Today we dive deep into what are the things a hiring manager looks for in a resume when evaluating candidates, especially in the start-up space. Samantha is a people and value-driven marketing magician with a decade of B2B and B2C marcomms expertise. In the last decade, she's worked on rebranding organizations, launching tier-one SaaS products, building a PR engine, and developing the soul of the organization-also known as the brand. She is known for her vivid and authentic personality and her scrappy “make it happy” startup mentality. Currently, she spearheads the marketing and communications efforts at Torpago, a fintech startup shaking up the spend management space, as the head of marketing. Growing up, Samantha was raised to “go to war” and “be ten times better than the next person.” Her parents thought they were getting a corporate lawyer, but they got a marcomms generalist instead. She's the oldest of four and the only girl in a Puerto Rican and Portuguese-mix household. Outside of work, you can catch her creating content on TikTok, planning her next trip, or trying new restaurants in NYC, NJ, or Houston. OH! She's also a self-proclaimed boutique fitness enthusiast, so you'll catch her at SoulCycle, Bar Method, or Barre3. Connect with SamConnect with Eddiana

Health Is Hell

Exercise gives many of us a sense of control, stability, and discipline. Boutique fitness, with its fancy methodologies and curated lights, scents, and sounds, capitalizes on another, more elusive (and highly monetizable) feeling: purpose. For up to $50 per class, we're not only sold a vision of our best body, but also our best self. We're asked to set intentions, repeat affirming mantras, and see squatting and sprinting as a chance to ‘conquer the impossible'. The word 'community' is thrown around like cold towels. In a world that's lonely and often disappointing, it's easy to see why endorphins can quickly become addictive and studios marketing power and positivity become clients' second homes. But for employees of these studios, the culture is a LOT darker.  I open up the episode with my own candid confessions about using barre and pilates as an emotional coping mechanism, especially when it comes to men and relationships; choosing body neutrality over body positivity; and my attraction to overpriced boutique fitness as a way to achieve the "clean girl aesthetic"...and therefore the semblance of a more put-together life.  Then (13:35), with the casting help of Deuxmoi, we hear from anonymous former employees of Bar Method, DanceBody, Flywheel, Laughing Lotus, Orange Theory, Pure Barre, Taryn Toomey's The Class, an unnamed Los Angeles Lagree studio, and a Western Pennsylvania SoulCycle dupe. They tell stories about psychologically abusive training camps, CEOs with God complexes, intense fat shaming, raging eating disorders, overt racism, and severe underpayment. They walk us through how instructors get clients hooked on certain workouts, and what makes a marketing campaign effective. They reveal some of the WILD codes of conduct (or lack thereof) found in employee and trainer handbooks. And, most importantly, they encourage us to take a long, hard look at why we're often so willing to compromise our morals, on either side of the check-in desk, in pursuit of the “perfect body.” ~ GOT A SECRET TO GET OFF YOUR CHEST? And one of the things that is a byproduct of this program is the impact on your actual businesses. And so Karen, I know we've had a lot of stations that are really you putting your values into your company, right? And really pushing into. And a lot of the time even last week, when we talked about should you do this or that, really me questioning you to create a power in you so that you know what is right for your company. And so I'd love for you to just talk a little bit about some of the byproduct impact you feel since doing Empowered Life and your actual Bar Method franchise.Karen Marino:Yes. For sure. Like I said, I know that we keep going back to the values, but using my values in how I run my business has been such a huge shift in my thoughts and just how I go about my day. Obviously connection. Our studio is all about community and connection, not just with our clients, but with my staff. I've always felt extremely close to my staff. And sometimes there was always... Not sometimes there was always. That doesn't even make sense. There were people along the way who said, "You have to keep your distance appropriately with your staff." And I was always like, "It just doesn't feel right to be that way." And there's always those people saying, "Oh, you should do it more professionally. You should do it this way."Karen Marino:And this helped me realize, connection being my strongest value, no, that's why it didn't feel right to run my business like that. And I have had staff from the very beginning. This is a small part-time job for my staff and they are wholly committed as if it were a 60 hour a week job. And I know it's because I connect to them at that different level. I care about them. They're like family to me. We enjoy each other. We have fun together, yet they know I have set standards and expectations for them, but I do it the way that feels right for me. And this has helped me lead to that recognition and acceptance with this is how I do it. And of course we all have to adjust and modify and nothing is ever done just the right way.Find the FULL transcript here: Season 5 Episode 2: Should Entrepreneurs Have a Life Coach, Part 2

[8:32] - Brandi learned through her pregnancy that she needed to advocate for herself. [10:04] - Because she knew she is the expert of her own body, Brandi explained why she monitored her blood pressure and how she continued to advocate for herself. [11:40] - As a result of using her voice and knowing her body, Brandi learned she could have died. “We do not want to go back to being the way we were,” says Chuck Runyon, co-founder and CEO of Self Esteem Brands, the parent company to Anytime Fitness, Bar Method, Basecamp, and Waxing in the City. Anytime, the largest of the brands, has nearly 5,000 franchise locations on seven continents—all of which had to shut down over the course of about five weeks due to Covid-19. For a company based in Minnesota, Anytime Fitness was early to realize the potentially catastrophic threat of the coronavirus because of its clubs in China. But even as those locations shut down, Runyon says, “We thought it would be contained. After Anytime’s 20 clubs in Italy closed, “it escalated quickly.” In the U.S., Missouri clubs were the first to close and then every day, every week, came another. “Like dominoes.” “In all the years we’ve sat around in meetings of what if…never did any of us anticipate shutting down nearly 5,000 clubs around in the world in five weeks.” But since they have, Runyon says he wants to make the most of the unprecedented experience. “Let’s learn, let’s adapt, and let’s be better because of it.” Anytime, Bar and Basecamp have been releasing digital content including coaching, workouts and even recipes and nutrition tips. Some of the content is free to the public and has drawn a new audience. Going forward, Runyon says, “We want to make sure we offer an omni channel experience.” Changes will also come to Self Esteem Brands’ home office in Woodbury, Minn. where around 350 employees work. “We’ll be more nimble, faster, and adopt some work from home policies. We’ll analyze travel…I think we can be leaner, and every bit as productive.” One thing Runyon doesn’t think will change: enthusiasm for the gym. “Eighty percent of health club members say they are looking forward to getting back,” Runyon says. “I think it’s going to be a mini-January…. with a nice surge of people wanting to get back to normal.” Anytime is prepared to step up its cleaning protocol, modify traffic, and whatever else is required. “There’s no playbook for this,” he says. “I’ve been unbelievably proud of how the team has adapted so quickly, It’s been an incredible experience in so many ways.” After our conversation with Runyon, who previously appeared on By All Means with his co-founder and president of Self Esteem Brands Dave Mortensen, we go back to the classroom with University of St. Thomas marketing professor Gino Giovanelli. “The thing I loved about my classroom was the community. It’s the same for a health club. What they’re selling is camaraderie.”

“I HAD TO GET OUT OF THE CORPORATE BOX”  Emily King began working in insurance and financial services right out of college.  “It seemed most important at the time to have a stable job and a paycheck,” she says. Although she was successful in the large-company environment---rising to the executive ranks---in the long run, she admits, it wasn’t for her.  “I had to get out of the corporate box, she says.” “I needed to create my own success.” In this interview she discusses the frustration she felt as a woman in corporate America.  Perhaps you will relate to her story. FROM CAR WASH TO UPS STORE TO INTERIOR DESIGN  Some might call her a serial entrepreneur.  At one point she owned a car wash; at another she owned a UPS franchise. She “fell into” the franchise, she says, due to some unfortunate circumstances. But she had the bug---as she describes it in this episode.  Her biggest motivation came, however, when she got divorced and found herself with responsibility for two young children.  While your circumstances might be different, many women find they need to make a career shift more out of necessity than anything else.  Sometimes it takes a kick in the rear to make a change, and Emily opens up about what motivated her to take that “leap of faith,” as she calls it.  She also describes pursuing her passion.  For her it was interior design. “If I was going to have to leave my kids every morning,” she says, “it was going to have to be for something that excited me.” “At least I wouldn’t be going to a cubicle.”  HER MINDSET:  YOU GOT THIS  Emily shares her experiences and describes how to know when it’s time to move from one venture to another. When working in your own business, Emily believes, you always become more confident and braver, even it your business doesn’t succeed. That way you’ll be able to make the necessary changes. You’ve got to have the right attitude and mindset about change, she advises, then opportunities will open up to you.  What’s Emily’s mindset?  Well, listen in to find out!  RAISING THE BAR (Method)  As if running your own design firm and renovating houses with you husband isn’t enough, Emily is also co-owner of a very busy Bar Method studio in suburban New Jersey.  She currently employs 22 people.  “I managed employees in my other businesses, but I’ve had to learn an entirely new language,” she admits.”  But she is learning.  “It’s been a new set of first days,” she says. At first, if the studio was open, either she or her business partner had to be there.  They were each putting in 60-70-hour weeks.  “The business is your baby,” says Emily.  “Between the two of us, it was ‘Who’s got the baby?’” “You can’t put the baby down.” What’s your baby?  Can you relate to Emily’s experience? Chuck Runyon and Dave Mortensen opened their first Anytime Fitness gym in 2002. Their concept was an alternative to big box gyms: A no-frills space with little supervision…just workout equipment that was available literally any time. Seventeen years later, Anytime Fitness is the world’s largest fitness franchise company with $2 billion in annual revenue and nearly 5,000 locations on all seven continents, thanks to a recent opening on a ship that spends half the year in Antarctica. Runyon and Mortensen created a parent company, Self Esteem Brands, that also includes Waxing The City, Basecamp Fitness and Bar Method. They’ve earned just about every entrepreneurial award imaginable – they’ve been recognized as one of America’s most promising companies by Forbes, and the fastest growing fitness club by the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association. They did it all on instinct and “grit.” As Runyon says, only half jokingly, “Our company wouldn’t hire us today.” The two share the lessons they’ve learned about leadership, wellness, and strategic growth. Says Runyon, “As leaders we need to celebrate when our team is doing well, but then we need to raise the bar again.” After our conversation with Runyon and Mortensen, we go back to the classroom with the University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business. Marcella De La Torre, who teaches course on leadership and business ethics, highlights some of the keys to Anytime’s success. “They are constantly adjusting to the complexity of the business. As you grow, you need more complex strategic plans. They are not naïve.”

Jeana and Jay set a new goal for Jay to try to get out on a date night with his wife more frequently - starting with one date every three weeks with his wife. 33:15: Jay describes his journaling routine and why gratitude is important to help him to see how lucky he is. Jen Hedrick + Angie Comiteau - On a lovely Saturday afternoon Jen and Angie stopped by my home to talk about their journey in building the first Bar Method studio outside of California in 2008 and being tapped to help Bar Method create an expansion plan on how to open up nationally. Both had had successful careers prior to meeting each other at a local music class for their children. They became fast friends as they talked about feeling out of shape and disconnected from their community. On the outside it may look like creating their extremely successful business was easy. It was not. Like any entrepreneur setting off on a new course they had fearful thoughts - what if no one liked the workout, what if they failed, and could they pull it off. But together they felt courage. At the time, Bar Method had just a handful of studios located only in California. Not only did Jen and Angie launch what became a very lucrative business in their town, but it ignited the expansion of the Bar Method franchise up and down the east coast, resulting in New Jersey hosting the most Bar Method studios next to California. Jen and Angie's drive and determination to create a quality, superior, safe, effective exercise experience ran parallel with their inspiration to create a supportive community. While a financially successful business was welcome, money was NOT their driving motivation. They set out to start the business for the experience, the journey and the excitement. Along the way they realized the true gold in their business - the community they were building - being a way to connect with others and an opportunity to promote kindness and support, resulting in a business that has a soul. Let's Figure It Out with Jen Hedrick and Angie Comiteau. You can catch Angie in her sold out classes in Summit, and in the coming months, Jen will be back on the schedule in Summit leading classes women line up for. For more information about Bar Method and a class near you, visit BarMethod.com. We'll be watching to see what Jen and Angie have up their sleeves next.
