As hospitals face rising demands and tighter margins, the ability to track quality metrics and staffing productivity in real-time has become indispensable. According to Forbes magazine, the relationship between managers and their employees has a significant impact on their mental health, similar to the effect of a partner. My guest this week, NICU Nurse Manager, Felicia Torres Vaughn, understands this and works hard to build strong relationships with her staff. During our conversation, Felicia clarified some common misconceptions about managers and emphasized the importance of mentorship. She also encouraged the idea of embracing failure, as it provides an opportunity to learn and grow. I've had many mentors throughout my journey, and Felicia taught me a valuable lesson on what it means to be a compassionate and thoughtful leader. She does this most profoundly, by example, not expecting her staff to do anything she wouldn't do herself. As she spoke of her love for Mother Teresa, I noticed similarities in their service mindset, humble spirit, and desire to bring love and light to the people they serve.  Her advice for nurses who aspire to be leaders? The future is here! Today's guest is Paul Malito, Nurse Manager for UAB's TeleICU. Malito says the lack of bedside experience among nurses is a problem nationally. On average, nurses have fewer than six months of bedside experience, and that has been further limited by the COVID-19 pandemic over the past three years. An operations center for the Tele-ICU and Tele-Acute Nursing units connects less experienced bedside nurses with those who have more experience.According to Malito, telehealth helps accomplish two key goals for inpatient care: proactively addressing changing patient conditions and making more efficient use of experienced nurses' knowledge. Three new inpatient platforms take advantage of in-room technology that allows constant virtual monitoring and interaction to better respond to symptoms. Over 320 UAB Hospital patient rooms are wired with virtual patient monitoring equipment that enables nurses to observe and interact with patients with audio and/or video, communicate with bedside nurses, and engage emergency alarms.Links: https://www.uabmedicine.org/news/nurses-use-telehealth-to-improve-service-and-patient-outcomes/#

On our last episode, we highlighted the fact that September is National Suicide Prevention Month and talked about some of the issues surrounding Veteran Suicide.  One of the issues we didn't address is the barrier that some Veterans feel exists when they need to access immediate care to keep themselves safe from self-harm and they are not exactly sure how it works or how much it will cost them.  Those barriers and the feeling that getting help may worsen the problem by putting them in medical debt is being addressed thanks to the passage of the COMPACT Act, allowing Veterans to get free emergency medical care relating to immediate suicide concerns. On this episode of The 9 Line, we speak with Natalie Wells, COMPACT Act Coordinator and Sheika Adams, Nurse Manager for Transitional Care Community Inpatient, about what the COMPACT Act means for Veterans, some of the types of care covered under this new benefit, and how the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System is leading the way for the VA as a whole in implementing this new legislation.

Optimal Health Series In Franklin County, Ohio, and across the U.S., there are long-standing racial disparities in maternal and birth outcomes, particularly between white and Black women. One of the most glaring determinates of inequity in U.S. healthcare can be seen in maternal birth rates. Based on the 2020 report Maternal Mortality Rates in the United States by The Centers for Disease Control, the maternal mortality rate for non-Hispanic Black women in 2020 was 55.3 deaths per 100,000 live births, 2.9 times the rate for non-Hispanic white women. It's an equity gap that appears to be worsening. As highlighted in the award-winning 2022 documentary film Aftershock, Black birthing mothers face three-to-four times the mortality risk compared to their white counterparts. We uncover this epidemic in maternal health and highlight a way forward toward better and more equitable outcomes for all mothers. A transcript is available online Addiction and overdose rates have reached historic levels in the last several years. And while fentanyl and synthetic opioids are responsible for much of the surge, cocaine and other stimulants such as methamphetamine are playing an increasingly common role. Addiction problems are not rare (it's estimated that 10% of the population has substance use disorder) and they don't go away because someone is pregnant. Substance use during pregnancy -- whether of licit or illicit substances -- can complicate pregnancy and may pose a risk for the fetus. And because of the stigma associated with substance use, many people forego prenatal care, further complicating the pregnancy.Host Seán Collins talks with two healthcare professionals about their efforts to reach people with substance use disorders to help them care for themselves and their fetus.Collin Schenk, M.D., is an Addiction Recovery Services physician at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Wash. I later became the Associate Chief Nursing Officer at Henrico Doctors' Hospital and for the last 7 years, I have been the Chief Nursing Officer of Retreat Doctors' Hospital. “What you want in a mentor is someone who truly cares for you and who will look after your interests and not just their own. When you do come across the right person to mentor you, start by showing them that the time they spend with you is worthwhile.” – Vivek Wadhwa It is impossible to overstate the importance of having professional black mentors in the end of life and death care industry. Individuals who selflessly give of themselves, teach, encourage, uplift, and provide opportunity without being competitive all the while allowing apprentices, students, and professionals to stand on their shoulders and to build careers while passing the baton forward. Historically those who've held positions of power and influence have been white male gatekeepers. For young black professionals like myself and those that are constantly emerging, seeking help, guidance, direction, and support from these gatekeepers has been intimidating, disappointing and unfruitful. Luckily this changing. In 2019, I was blessed to meet my mentor Mrs. Anita Grant. Anita Pollard Grant, RN, MS, BSN, AAS, MLD-C is the Founder and CEO of GranEnterprise LLC, the parent copy of the NBE Review Coach. Anita graduated cum laude from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree. As an undergraduate, she was a member of Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society for Nursing. After graduation, Anita became a licensed Registered Nurse and a Commissioned Officer in the United States Navy Nurse Corps. During those active-duty years, she gained hands-on experience in Same Day Surgical Care and Behavioral Health Nursing and in supervising staff, facilitating interdisciplinary communication and coordinating patient care. Years later, Anita transitioned to the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps where she served as a Nurse Manager as well as a National Healthcare Recruiter with the Department of Justice/Federal Bureau of Prisons, a Nurse Consultant/Surveyor with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and a Senior Program Manager for the National Institute of Corrections. In May 2021, Anita retired as an O6/Captain from the USPHS after almost thirty (30) years of honorable service. Anita has been an answer to my prayers since the first time we met. Over the years she has poured into me in ways that would take too long to share in this 500-word blog. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Anita for The Death and Grief Talk Podcast. Though she and I have worked extensively together over the past 3 years developing course, trainings and much more and surprisingly, after all this time and sharing I had no idea what bought her to the death care industry. During our time together, Anita and discuss the foundation of her career in the armed services, her transition into funeral services and her passion for combing her unique life experience, academic and professional skills to help students nationwide achieve licensure in both funeral directing and embalming. Mental Health Trailblazers: Psychiatric Nurses Speak Up

Season two of “Mental Health Trailblazers, Psychiatric Nurses Speak Up,” keeps the conversation alive and meaningful with episode 6. This week, our host, Indrias Kassaye, is joined by Mr. Uriah Millen, a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) student, former Nurse Manager for the intensive care unit at St. Joseph's Hospital-North who recently moved on to behavioral health nursing. Mr. Millen opens up to Indrias about what he's observed as a Black, immigrant man forging his own path in the field of psychiatric nursing. Uriah Millen believes providing mental health care is his calling and desires to impact minority youth suffering from mental illness and substance use. Mr. Millen's life took a couple of unique twists and turns leading up to his current career as a nurse. Uriah explains that he migrated to the United States from Jamaica, a year after being married, and leaving his career as a mortgage banker. Mr. Millen's first influence in the world of nursing was his uncle. He already lived in the United States and encouraged Uriah to pursue nursing due to the financial and spiritual gains. Inspired by his new life, Uriah went to school and graduated with a bachelor's degree in nursing in 2014 from the University of South Florida, in Tampa. Mr. Millen recalls, “We started with 60 students in the class and we ended up with… 18 of us actually graduating. There were three or four men… and I was the only African American [man] in the class.”Mr. Millen's experiences as an African-American male in a predominantly White and female-led field only inspired him to provide the most effective care for his patients at any stage in their journey–and also his associates. The last couple of years have been particularly challenging for nurses, but that has only encouraged Uriah to create spaces for his team to express their thoughts and share their experiences. He believes that those treating patients–especially in critical care–need a space to feel safe and supported by their peers in order to provide the most effective care. Mr. Millen is also focused on his patients and the factors that have led to the undeniable, upward trend in deaths by suicide and other mental health issues affecting African American youth. Uriah highlights the importance of engaging minority youth in conversations to address the mental health challenges brought on by the myriad pressures they face, including from social media, identity politics and COVID-19.Uriah Millen has a passion for helping the underrepresented and underserved African American population experiencing mental health issues. He remains focused on reducing the stigma associated with mental illness and improving behavioral health access and outcomes for disadvantaged youth. ATMI producer Ada Bjorkman spoke with Meals about managing the acute care unit during the pandemic, how staffing shortages impact the nurses and patients, and how he works with his team to make sure they continue to provide the best care possible during this stressful time. They spoke on January 19th, 2022. Hosted by Forrest Rodgers. Music by Devin Shreckengost and Kendrick Whiteman. Alaska Teen Media Institute is based in Anchorage, Alaska. Patience isn’t just a virtue—it’s a necessity, especially during times of change and uncertainty. Patience is a powerful heart quality for maintaining mental and emotional well-being. It supports our ability to manage our energies with more ease and balance. When we act with impatience, our mind tries to rush energy or force outcomes, canceling the experience of flow and creating glitches in our intentions. Many of us are impatient to find a new sense of normal, yet “normal” is constantly challenged by unpredictable events. Patience is the art of intelligent waiting. Traffic jams, slow computers, and difficult people won't disappear as we practice patience. However, patience helps to attune our mental and emotional nature to the most reasonable and effective way for responding to each situation that life presents. The practice of patience enables us to quietly sense our heart's intuitive directions to guide us in making more effective choices. We invite you to join our Add Heart Call host Deborah Rozman, HeartMath President and CEO, and her guest Charlene Johnson, Nurse Manager of Perinatal Services at Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento, as they talk about why, in today's uncertain energetic environment, it's prime time to increase our patience baseline and make it an essential part of our new norm. Charlene sees patience as a key component of resilience. She will share why patience has been an important quality for her and the people she serves, especially throughout the past year of the pandemic. Deborah will share an exercise we can all use to replace impatience with patience and how, as we replace impatience with inner ease and patience, our responses will play out with more balance, resilience, and clearer discernment. We will close with a heart-focused meditation to add heart to our intention to practice a deeper patience with ourselves and with others over the next month and create a reservoir of heart energy we can each tap into whenever we need a patience booster. More About Our Guest:Charlene Johnson has been with Kaiser Permanente for 20 years. She is passionate about assisting the health care professional in transforming themselves so that they can transform the systems in which they work. She loves to inspire others to discover their purpose and increase their personal effectiveness. As the Nurse Manager of Perinatal Services at Kaiser, she oversees Labor and Delivery, Postpartum, and the Special Care Nursery. She is also a Caritas Coach and a HeartMath Certified Trainer for the Northern California region. Charlene was instrumental in co-creating “Enhancing a Culture of Caring,” a four-part series that was rolled out to all the Northern California staff.
