Welcome to National Treasures! Tag along with comedians Laura Lexx and Will Duggan for a day out at some of nation's finest attractions. Castles, stately homes, ruins, art galleries and museums. Listen as they stumble through muddy fields, hallowed halls and half-remembered historical facts. It’s like an audio tour… only narrated by two idiots.
This week Laura tells Will all about 1299 - a year full of tiny details including a prissy nun who is just way too perfect, a detour through what not to get stuck in a mangle and then finishing up with a small start to a massive historical deal. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
For our final (ever?!) deep dive, Laura tells Ron all about the Great Flood of 1953 that they learned about on their trip to Canvey Island. They try to explain the details of the storm and hear some stories from eye witnesses about what it was like to live through. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Yes, we know: there hasn't been an interview. The file is lost somewhere in the ether of Will's internet but that won't stop us from prattling on for further time about the wonders of the Escape/Piña Colada song for 45 minutes. In a fun, giggly, lovely little chitter chatter the two besties catch up and dissect the Piña Colada song... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Laura and Will have a blissful trip to Canvey Island and then Will spoils it by being selfless/an idiot. This episode features some of the history of Canvey Island, some fish and chips, some cold weather and a few technical issues as Laura and Will get used to the new microphones and how they work. Due to a planned brilliant thing and an unplanned very irritating thing we are taking a break for a month. That's the headline, listen to the episode if you want more details. We'll see you in March. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this, our final episode from Lewes Castle and Archaeological Museum Laura tells Will all about dinosaurs in the UK. And between you and me it is bloody fantastic. So pop it in your ears and enjoy. Hello everyone. This your first little deep dive after our visit to Lewes Castle and Archaeological museum. Now we can all agree that that was a lovely day out. But it gets better! In this episode Will tells Laura all about Witchcraft in the UK and a great time is had by all. Apart from the poor innocent women accused of Witchcraft. Obviously. But now in the modern world. ENJOY!Also apologies for the slightly lower than normal sound quality, between you and me/us, we just didn't use the right microphone. But let's put that behind us and crack on. ok, love you, bye. Hello! Welcome back! After our little trek round the ruins of Lewes Castle last week, we this week take a moment to explore the archaeological museum that's twinned with the castle. We look at all sorts of history from the super super old flints, to the Romans, to the Victorians. It is an absolutely delightful exploration of a treasure trove, just tucked away on Lewes High Street and available to look round with your ticket to Lewes Castle. A treat! Highly recommended! For the full version of this episode, and to support the podcast financially go to patreon.com/nationaltreasures. Happy New Year everyone! Laura and Will kick off 2023 with a delightfully wholesome visit to Lewes Castle. Tucked away on a cobbled street just off the main High Street through Lewes, are the ruins of Lewes Castle. Built by William de Warrenne right back in the past when everything was a nightmare. They explore the history of Lewes and the castle, and then take a trip up through the ruins to the top of the keep. This was recorded in December when the snow was falling and the roads were treacherous - who knows what the weather is like now it's January? Literally could be anything given how the weather has been of late.Anyway, enjoy a bit of Norman history and beyond. Next week, we complete our trip with the recording of our visit round the archaeological museum. All in all, pretty blooming lovely. To hear the full version of this episode, with not a giggle cut, just join our patreon at patreon.com/nationaltreasures and receive full cuts of all our episodes, an extra podcast every week AND a monthly live stream all for just £5 per month. So... listen, there was not quite enough of Brighton Christmas Market for us to be able to spin that visit into a double episode. We really did our best, but... this episode would have been us just going round that ferris wheel 60 times and no one wanted that. SO! We huddled back to our cosy homes and had a little Christmas party with our patrons. Laura and Will quizzed each other on all things Christmas. For the full version of this episode, to support the podcast and to get extended versions of all our podcasts, just go to patreon.com/nationaltreasures Hosted on Acast. Now, for our Christmas Special 2022 we headed down the road to Brighton Christmas market to splurge on some tat, pick up some last minute gifts and have a cup of something mulled. We decided to take the National Treasures intern AKA Maki with us and we took her on her first ever ferris wheel. What follows is one of the gentlest, most festive episodes of anything you could possibly get. It's not rock n roll, it's the National Treasures Podcast. Merry Christmas everyone! Hosted on Acast. Welcome welcome one and all. Christmas is round the corner and before our Christmas Special we have another deep dive. This time Will tells Laura all about the 12 Days of Christmas. Expect twists, turns, jokes, and frankly just too many birds. WHO NEEDS SEVEN SWANS EVER? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Oh Merry Christmas one and all. In this festive season we have decided to switch things up a bit. We have two deep dive firsts and then a bumper double episode. So in this episode enjoy Laura telling Will all about The North Pole, and really enjoy the growing realisation that Will has legit no idea what the North Pole actually is. Hosted on Acast. We asked you to vote, and you did. So Will tells Laura all about Crisp Flavours, both at home and abroad. I'll be honest, it's a lot better than it sounds. Last week we had a simply tremendous walk around the Sculpture Trail in the Forest of Dean and this week we bumble a few miles further down the road to visit Nick Page and ask him why he loves it there. It's always an amazing time being in Nick's company; whether that's because he's your buddy and you get to chat to him a lot (Laura), he's an acquaintance whose company you love (Will) or you're an audience member enthralled by his tales of hijinks (maybe you in the future?).Nick tells us all about his life on the road, weird stories of niche jobs and then what it was like being a car salesman in the 90s. It's a lovely, human, at home chat... just what we love bringing you from the National Treasures Podcast.Oh, and do check out Nick's wife Alice's art. She's a proper good artist... so good that Laura has bought three of her paintings. Now that's an endorsement!http://www.alicegorton.com/For the full version of this episode, and every other episode we produce join our patreon at patreon.com/nationaltreasures. November. Newvember. New subject?! Let's go!This month is all about The Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail and comedian Nick Page... what a top legend he is. He asked to come all the way to Gloucester for a lovely, peaceful walk around the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail and the jaunt to visit him for a chat. He also fed us focaccia which makes him our favourite guest we've had so far. No offence everyone else, but actually some offence, where was our damn bread, eh?We had a peaceful walk through the trees looking at the art, wondering if it was art, wondering why the dog was sulking and generally having the good old chit chat of two friends. It's everything you'd hope and more. For the full episode, including longer versions of all our previous episodes plus our bonus podcast Years & Years, go to our patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/nationaltreasuresNick Page will be our guest next week, we will be chatting car sales, how the 90s was just better and easier, and why he loves that sculpture trail. Well, you stitched her up again didn't you there listeners? You voted, we researched, and after our big trip to Wollaton Hall you chose orangeries for Laura to research and tell Will about. We sit down with absolute podcasting royalty this week to ask him about one of his true life's passions: Cheddar Gorge. Richard Herring of RHLSTP fame has the tables turned as we ask him some seriously stupid question, some seriously brilliant questions, and have a good laugh with him about the natural wonder that is Cheddar Gorge.Richard is wonderfully dynamic and enthusiastic about his former stomping ground. It's excursion week, and the start of a brand new month of adventuring! This week, the dynamic duo Laura Lexx and Will Duggan are off to Somerset, Laura's birthplace, to visit Cheddar Gorge on the orders of none other than the King of Cheddar - Richard Herring!Laura and Will go deep into not one but two caves, and also to the very top of the mountain via Jacob's Ladder. Laura is still recovering from an ultra marathon at this point so it's debatable how smart it is for her to be going up so many steps but she goes anyway.Join us next week when we chat to the wonderful Richard Herring about why he loves Cheddar so much and why he sent us there... Due to the new format and not wanting to confuse people by starting a new topic in the same month (and yes it is September now, but this was supposed to come out on Wednesday which was still August, but Will just had a nightmare). We thought we'd use this week to try and entice some of the non Patreon listeners over to Patreon (patreon.com/nationaltreasures) by dropping some white hot behind the paywall content for free.In this episode of Years and Years Laura told Will all about 1953. What should you expect? Awful hitmen, Potentially mentally jarring births and deaths, though weirdly, not for Will, and the most unbelievable Big Finish we have ever had. This week it's Will's turn to listen to the people and do the research on whatever they want. The people chose pin up art! Of course they did! It's the sexiest answer! Will, with a little help from friend of the podcast Charlotte, tells Laura all about the evolution of pin up art from it's bizarre invention to becoming a bit racy, to a bit racist, to sharks and cats. Enjoy! Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information.
In a world first for National Treasures we present our first ever Deep Dive episode! In the first week of August we visited IWM Duxford, then the following week we talked to Ed Byrne all about it. Now, the people have spoken and told us that the two things they want more detail on from our trip and our chat are Concorde and sexy pin up ladies. Next week Will will be telling Laura all about sexy pin up ladies but RIGHT NOW, Laura is telling Will all about concorde.Turns out, Laura hated researching Concorde because it was both:complicatedANDboringShe does her best to tell Will all about it, despite the glaring gaps in her knowledge. She also has a very good go at offending at least 1/4 of England. Her first fact goes down like a bag of cold sick and it only gets worse from there... enjoy! After a truly astonishing trip to see all the planes and nakey ladies on the planes at the IWM Duxford last week, Laura and Will are this week invited into the very home of comedy royalty Ed Byrne to talk to him about why he loves it there so much. They chat niche hobbies, aeronautics and why Laura is scared of space. Enjoy! And don't forget to vote for what you want us to talk about next week and the week after when we do a deep dive into two aspects of the IWM. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Laura Lexx and Will Duggan are BACK with the fourth series of their adorable, hit podcast: The National Treasures Podcast. Between them they've done it all: Live at The Apollo, a Fosters Award, Mock the Week, The Edinburgh Fringe 2022. But have they ever been to the IWM in Duxford? Well... no.They head off up the motorway to the sort of vaguely Cambridgeshire area to explore planes and other war type stuff because Ed Byrne told them to. Next week they will be chatting to Ed Byrne about exactly why he made them do that, but for now, sit back and let your excitable hosts take you round the hangars of Duxford... How is it the last episode of the series ALREADY? We don't know. We're gutted to be saying good bye again but so happy to share this final episode with you all. This week we popped up to Essex to visit a secret ex-government nuclear bunker at the request of Angela Barnes. We got scared by mannequins, we contemplated our own deaths and we got confused about most of the things we saw. We think contemplating death via nuclear war is the perfect chirpy way to end the series.A massive thank you to Kelvedon Hatch for having us along - we had a brilliant day and it's highly recommended for anyone looking for something a bit different to explore. https://secretnuclearbunker.com/Thank you to Angela for sending us, she has a show at the Edinburgh Fringe this year so do check that out if her brand of clever, warm comedy cracks you up.https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/angela-barnes-hot-mess See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It's Laura's choice this week. She took us to a childhood favourite of hers; Wookey Hole Caves in Somerset. We were joined by two special guests (and in a first for us both special guests were human). So listen to Will fall in love with a witch, Laura lose her mind over a bat with a South London accent and quite frankly more dinosaurs than any of us bargained on. ENJOY!!! Would you like to pour bliss into your ears? Well, get a load of this episode. Laura Lexx and Will Duggan take themselves on a day trip to beautiful Welford Park, home of the Great British Bake Off. This day trip was requested by Michael Chakraverty, who appeared on series 10 of Bake Off.After the disaster that was their trip to Box Hill, Laura and Will didn't hold high hopes for enjoying a walk round Welford Park on a cold day but then... magic happened. They found themselves feeling glorious. They chatter and bicker as they make their way round woodlands, rivers and fields accompanied by the podcast dog - Maki. We hope you love it. In a National Treasures first, Laura and Will head to East Croydon on the orders of Britain's Got Talent star Nabil Abdulrashid. You know how most comedians really take the mick out of their own neighbourhood? Well not Nabil! Laura and Will experience all the nostalgia of mooching round a shopping centre and drinking apple tango. Also, Laura does something impulsive while Will stands and watches. We are halfway through the series for the third outing of The National Treasures Podcast so we thought we'd give you another little sneak preview of you what goes on behind the patreon iron curtain. Laura and Will go to Stratford. What is Stratford famous for? Yep, that's right: BUTTERFLIES. We have a great time getting dive bombed by some massive fitties and looking at all their sexy sexy wings. Then we go for a wander round Stratford and get very disappointed in a Waterstones. After some traditional Stratfordian lunch it's time to chat to Georgia Tennant about why she sent us to Stratford, how she feels about mulled wine and what type of insect she would be. This week Laura and Will finally get to go and see The Sir John Soane Museum in London's Holborn after having had it raved about by not one but two comedian friends! It's absolutely full to bursting and provided much merriment wandering about and trying to absorb the organised chaos of the place. Enjoy! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week it's old Double Duggs' choice of location and he chose... close to home. Brighton! Home of the pavillion, the pier, a million different day trips. So which one of these are we going to? We are hitting up the Booth Museum. A little known museum on Devil's Dyke Road. Home to a fabulous collection of taxidermy birds and animals. Laura and Will explore the echoey halls of the museum chatting their usual bollocks and enjoying the Victorian approach to museums and general life. Enjoy! After last week's debacle we really needed a nice clean, fun day out somewhere that wasn't awful and Mark Watson PROVIDED! This week Laura and Will were invited to Anglesey to sample all that the phenomenal island off the North West coast has to offer. They see a Bronze Age standing stone, a museum dedicated to traditional Welsh life, they have a paddle, Will befriends a dog (sort of) and they visit Church Island: a small island full of graves with an incredible view of the Menai Strait. After all that, they head off for a pint with Kiri to discuss just why she's so in love with the island. It's called Years & Years and each week they choose a year at random and one researches it just about well enough to badly explain it to the other one. Many many months ago, in our spin off podcast Years & Years (check out patreon.com/nationaltreasures for details) we investigated the year 1488 and came across the birth of Mother Shipton.
