But what if there were a better way—something sustainable, durable, and just as fun? Webb Knudsen, CEO and founder of Playper, has created a solution. Playper produces planet-friendly, buildable toy sets made from an innovative material called “Playper board.” These toys not only spark children's imagination but are also designed to reduce plastic waste.Webb explained, “Playper is award-winning, planet-friendly, buildable playsets and storytelling card sets designed for imagination-inspiring pretend play.” He continued, “We make our toys out of a material called Playper board. It's durable, thick, and flexible… you can spill water, ketchup, whatever on it and wipe it right off.”Playper's toys are designed to endure even the roughest play while inspiring creativity. They feature a unique tongue-and-groove slotting system, creating a satisfying “click” when assembled. This system ensures that kids can build and rebuild their toys, offering hours of hands-on engagement. The company has already gained traction, with products available at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Walmart.com, and in dozens of independent toy stores. Webb's mission to create sustainable toys has resonated with parents seeking alternatives to plastic. “There's a lot of demand for more sustainable toy options,” Webb said. “The majority… of all toys are made out of plastic. I really felt like there had to be a better way.”In addition to its environmental focus, Playper emphasizes education. Webb described how the toys' storytelling elements and social-emotional learning features set them apart. “They teach kids about their emotions,” he said. “That's a real big segment within toys.”Playper is also raising capital through WeFunder, allowing everyday people to invest in the company. “I wanted the average person to be able to invest in our business,” Webb explained. “It really is the type of business that resonates with normal everyday people.”By creating toys that prioritize sustainability and imagination, Webb and Playper are building a better future for kids and the planet.tl;dr:Playper creates durable, eco-friendly toys from paper to reduce plastic waste and inspire kids' creativity. The toys are available nationwide, including at Barnes & Noble, and emphasize storytelling and education.Webb Knudsen credits his success to resilience, adapting through challenges to refine Playper's products.Playper is raising capital via WeFunder, inviting everyday people to invest in its sustainable mission.Webb's leadership, team-building skills, and passion for innovation drive Playper's growth and impact. How to Develop Resilience As a SuperpowerWebb Knudsen identifies his resilience as a key superpower, enabling him to persevere through challenges. “When things don't go well, I get back up, brush myself off, and keep going,” he shared. Webb keeps two motivational reminders at his desk: an image of a frog refusing to be swallowed with the caption “never give up,” and a quote from tennis player Vitus Gerolitis, “Nobody beats Vitus Gerolitis 17 times in a row.” These keep him grounded, reminding him to stay persistent despite setbacks.Webb shared that Playper's journey has not been an overnight success. The company has faced numerous challenges, from refining its materials to pivoting product lines. Through trial and error, Webb and his team found the right formula for sustainable, buildable toys. Their persistence paid off, with Playper now sold nationwide at Barnes & Noble and in independent toy stores. Webb's ability to adapt and keep moving forward, even after setbacks, exemplifies his resilience.Tips for Developing Resilience:Focus on the Bigger Picture: Remind yourself of your mission and the purpose behind your work.Stay Motivated with Visual Cues: Use quotes or images that inspire perseverance to keep you grounded during tough times.Adapt and Pivot: Learn from failures and try new approaches until you find what works.Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge milestones, even small ones, to maintain momentum.Draw Inspiration from Loved Ones: Spend time with those who remind you of your “why,” like Webb does with his kids.By following Webb Knudsen's example and advice, you can make resilience a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. At this spot, high up on The Warren, in the dead of night, live the crickets. They're everywhere. Stridulating, like tiny minute hands etching the moments, of this night's time passing. Crisp. Unwitnessed. They're probably dark bush crickets. The Lento box records the scene alone, on a warm night last August. Tied to a very difficult tree. Difficult because it was very spiny. And off the path, part way down a precipitous drop. Why not an easier tree? Because of the view. This tree looks out over the valley, over all the tree tops, towards the hushing sea, far below. Time passes. Somewhere in the valley, an ocean breeze lows in. Shifts a bank of trees into a state of gentle rustling. Countless crickets mark the moments. Then from nowhere a nocturnal train materialises in the bottom of the valley, right of scene. It glides across, and into the left horizon. Further and further. Until finally, it dissolves, and becomes just another part of this place's subtle, and natural murmurings. Perhaps a hedgehog is moving in the bushes. And a hint of a plane, heading south east towards France. * This 50 minute section is from a 48 hour recording we made in Folkestone Warren last August. It captures a deeply peaceful scene of this green and tangled place, by the sea, and the endlessly breaking waves of the Channel. Listen carefully (with headphones or airpods) and you may catch sound of a lower pitched cricket to left of scene. We still aren't sure what exactly it is, but it sounds like the cicadas in old films from 1950s America.
Have you ever felt like you should be ready to grow—your goals are clear, your intuition is nudging you forward—but you keep hitting an invisible wall? That inner tug of war isn't laziness or lack of clarity… it's resistance rooted in unhealed parts of you that are scared of change. In this episode, we're unpacking why so many women (especially spiritually minded entrepreneurs) resist the transformation they need -- and how to begin healing the subconscious blocks that keep you stuck. While Tesla collects millions of data points daily to perfect self-driving technology, investors working with a century of stock market returns have barely over a thousand data points to analyze. This fundamental limitation—what Gallmeyer calls the difference between "big data" and finance's "small data" reality—creates profound implications for how we should think about investment decisions. The conversation delves into the historical evolution of financial data, from the pre-1960s era when decisions relied heavily on intuition and "soft information," through the development of the CRISP database at the University of Chicago, to today's sophisticated algorithmic trading systems. Gallmeyer explains how market participants continuously adapt to new information sources, creating an ever-evolving landscape where yesterday's winning strategy becomes tomorrow's conventional wisdom. This endogenous change within financial markets makes them fundamentally different from systems where data collection leads to steady, predictable improvement. For anyone fascinated by markets, data science, or the intersection of human judgment and quantitative analysis, this episode offers valuable perspective on the promises and limitations of data-driven decision making. Whether you're managing your retirement portfolio or simply curious about how markets function, you'll gain insights into why certain problems remain resistant to even our most sophisticated analytical tools—and where human judgment still provides irreplaceable value.Show Notes:Dimson, Marsh, & Staunton, Global Investment Returns Yearbook 2025Kim, Muhn, et al., Financial Statement Analysis with Large Language Models (2024)New York Fed Staff NowcastFederal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, GDPNowThanks for listening! Hop Forward: Getting You Ahead in the Brewing and Beer Business
I've stayed in craft beer for over a decade not just for the love of the liquid, but for the friendships. The relationships I've built are what keep me here, the camaraderie amongst brewers and beer professionals. You don't stick with a job that leaves you soaked in yeast and wrestling with broken equipment unless you're surrounded by others who have been in the trenches with you. There's nothing quite like trading stories and the mini-dramas over a good, solid pint with your newfound friends at a beer festival or down the local. And when you both wax lyrical about the beer you're sharing, it's pure magic.Sometimes, on the Hop Forward Podcast, the focus and emphasis is on a particular subject. Over the seven years of airing this show, we've covered a vast array of topics - sustainability, financing, business development, wild yeasts, blending to name a few - and yet some of my favourite episodes are the ones that simply just happened. Discussions that ran away with themselves; recordings that sound like you're eavesdropping on a fascinating conversation in the pub.Mostly, the focus of the show is on a particular topic—sustainability, finance, wild yeasts, business strategy, blending, and so on. But honestly, some of my favourite episodes are the ones that just happen. Conversations that meander like a pub chat, full of insight and warmth, where you're almost eavesdropping on two people geeking out over beer, life and their mutual appreciation of Tommy Barnes' A Beer in the Loire. This week's episode is one of those.I'm joined by the brilliant Kate Hyde, Head Brewer and Product Director at Hand Brew Co., a 25HL brewery based in Worthing. After working in publishing and fashion, Kate moved to France, discovered brewing, and eventually brought her skills back to the UK, joining Hand Brew Co.We cover everything from her role at the brewery and its original tower system, to cask beer, the beautiful artwork and artists that Hand Brew Co showcases, and the everyday joys and challenges of brewing professionally.I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed recording it.THIS WEEK'S EPISODE IS PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY:Charles Faram & Co (charlesfaram.com)Supplying hops for over 150 years, Charles Faram offers a vast range of nitrogen-flushed hop varieties from the UK, Europe, New Zealand, and the USA.Crisp Malt (crispmalt.com)Since 1870, Crisp has blended tradition with innovation, producing malts like Chevallier Heritage and Clear Choice Malt.FOLLOW HOP FORWARDhopforward.beer | LinkedIn | BlueSky | Instagram

In this episode, I explore the powerful paradox that self-acceptance and unlocking real, lasting change. We'll dive into what it means to love yourself while still wanting more, and how this balance fuels the habits that lead to transformation. I'll bring in some research, and reflect on why your thoughts—not your weight—are often the real obstacles in your way. Quote of the Week: “There is no such thing as work-life balance. In this powerful and deeply personal episode, Michael Mogill—founder and CEO of Crisp—shares his journey from a four-year-old immigrant arriving in the U.S. with $500 in his family's pocket to leading one of the most influential companies in the legal marketing space. Raised by parents who had to restart their lives from scratch, Michael became the first in his family to learn English, attend college, and ultimately break into entrepreneurship. From selling POGs in elementary school to building websites in his early teens, his entrepreneurial roots run deep. But it wasn't until a camera, a side hustle, and a market pivot that Crisp was born—changing the legal marketing game forever. Michael dives into the highs and lows of building a business with no investors, the lessons learned from early failures, and the importance of health, clarity, and leadership in sustaining long-term growth. He explains how Crisp evolved from a scrappy video startup into a full-service coaching and marketing firm serving over a thousand law firms, and why he believes every law firm leader must first grow personally to grow professionally. Packed with wisdom on team building, vision-setting, and mindset shifts, this episode is a must-listen for entrepreneurs, legal professionals, and anyone navigating their own path to meaningful success. Takeaways: Starting from humble beginnings and overcoming early-life obstacles—like language barriers and financial hardship—can cultivate resilience and fuel long-term ambition. What starts as a small hustle or hobby can evolve into a thriving business when approached with curiosity, creativity, and persistence. When market conditions change or opportunities fade, strategic pivots—like shifting from hospitality to legal marketing—can lead to more focused and scalable business models.Outworking others and continuously developing personal capabilities are often more crucial than innate talent in building a successful business.Businesses reflect their leaders. Scaling a company requires not just better marketing or products, but also stronger leadership, better decision-making, and alignment across the team.Prioritizing physical and mental well-being is essential for sustainable leadership. It's not something to fix later—it enables better decisions and long-term success.A clear, exciting, and measurable vision is essential for alignment and growth. If the goal doesn't inspire you, it won't inspire your team either.

A lot of people won't tell you this, but here goes: in a battle of mustards, a mustard's going to lose. And it sucks, honestly it does. Because then you think about all the good times you had with the mustard. How it was there for you with its tangy, zippy, vinegar-y, yellowness. Crisp and cold from the fridge, tracing the outlines of your food like a highlighter, the way it dances as it drizzles. And yet, all things fade. Nothing's going to last forever. Not even mustard. Not when it's matched up against a different, yummier mustard. In this episode: The Top Tens, Spring Delirium, Extra Credit, SurvivorCheck out Imagine Dungeons, our actual play Dungeons and Dragons podcast.
