Perhaps most famous as the home of the druids, Ynys Môn, also known as Anglesey, occupies 275 square miles just off the north Wales coast. It is an ancient place. Archaeologists found Neolithic settlements at Llanfaethlu, making these some of the oldest villages in Wales. The Neolithic Castell Bryn Gwyn site remained in use until the Roman period. Bryn Celli Ddu is one of the most famous Bronze Age burial mounds. This passage tomb is around 5000 years old, and aligns with the sunrise on the summer solstice. Its name means 'the Mound in the Dark Grove', and it was first excavated in 1865. With so much history everywhere you turn, finding folklore and legend is to be expected. As a teenager, Mhara was struggling with her gender identity and sexuality. She felt completely alone. But finding books about witchcraft and Druidry transformed her life. She enjoyed getting lost in stories of enchantment and learning about local folklore. When she was ready to join a Druid community, she discovered there was a thriving one right on her doorstep. Anglesey, in Wales, was one of the last strongholds for Druids in Britian after the Roman invasion. The land is believed to be sacred and contains several historical and spiritual sites. Mora Morrison joins Mhara in Anglesey and they visit sacred rivers, ancient burial sites, and the Anglesey Druid Order headquarters.

Send us a textMy guest in this episode is Mhara Starling, a Welsh folk Witch raised on the Isle of Anglesey. Mhara is a fantastic speaker, teacher, and author, and I met her for the first time at the Sacred Space conference this past year. From growing up on the island of Anglesey, dreaming of the iconic red jersey, to scoring two tries on his Wales debut against South Africa at just 18, to his latest incarnation in the south of France, George recalls the sacrifices, the setbacks and the sheer drive that carried him to more than a century of international caps.George reflects on the grounding influence of his parents; a mother who kept him realistic, a father who drove him relentlessly and how that balance prepared him for the intensity of the Test arena. He shares candid memories of stepping into a senior Wales changing room as a teenager, the heroes who welcomed him in, and the unique pride of running out at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. The conversation also tackles the toughest chapters of his journey: a run of concussions that forced him to reassess his health and priorities. UK Culture Secretary LIsa Nandy talks us through the Government's new Creative Industries Sector Plan which aims to unlock growth and opportunity in culture, media and sport.Last week 27-year-old Scottish author Margaret McDonald become the youngest ever winner of the Carnegie medal for children's writing, for her debut novel Glasgow Boys, a book which explores mental health, trauma, inequality and identity through the friendship between two boys who have grown up in foster care. Margaret joins us live in the studio. We hear from the creators of a stage production (How To Win Against History) and a film (Madfabulous) based on the life of the so-called 'Dancing Marquess' Henry Paget, the 5th Marquess of Anglesey, a flamboyant Victorian aristocrat who inherited a vast fortune, squandered it and died at the age of 29. And the current Marquess of Anglesey talks about how his family views their ancestor. And artist Michael Visocchi talks about his monumental sculpture, Commensalis, which tells the story of the whale. “I heard someone on TV say they didn't think Essex had wildlife, until someone said wildlife is everywhere. What is the world coming to?” That's the question left by listener James, in Ecclefechan, Scotland for your co-hosts Stuart and William to delve into. Wildlife? More Like Wild Conspiracies! Join William and Stuart as they dissect the absurdities of British wildlife with all the enthusiasm of a damp Saturday in Colchester. William opens by suggesting that if you haven't graced Colchester with your presence, then clearly you've missed out on all the subtle wonders it has to offer—even if they're as unexciting as a bus stop in the drizzle.Stuart then delves into the baffling story from thirty years back, when someone reckoned that North Wales was practically bird-free—simply because no one bothered to record them. That is, until a slightly under-the-weather bird watcher on Anglesey made the inconvenient discovery that, shocker, birds do exist. Yes, even in a landscape where no one takes notes, nature finds a way to upend common sense.Ever the inquisitor, William questions which part of Essex this supposed wildlife desert applies to, considering that even the busiest corners of the county attract a touch of life. Stuart is quick to chime in: if your idea of wildlife is confined to roaming elephants and lions, you're in for a rude awakening—try rolling back your carpet and what's under there. For the pièce de résistance, they tackle the wild conspiracy theories claiming that not only does New Zealand not exist, but neither does Finland. So naturally, it's a short leap of logic to imagine that Essex is just a barren wasteland devoid of any real wildlife. Martin, from Portree, Scotland sets the next question - “Heard you say you are not that active as a photographer these days William, do you see a time where you'd go back to it? Here in Portree, for a large part of the year, the landscape is multiple layers of grey. Have you done much photography with such a simple pallet?”Martin's question was the wake-up call William didn't know he needed. While other projects hogged the schedule, the camera was left gathering dust, and he admits he never quite granted himself the freedom to simply go out and shoot. Now though, he's slowly easing back into photography, sharing the notion that layers in landscape photography can transform even the most ordinary view into something with unexpected depth. Meanwhile, Stuart spices things up with a side story. He recounts a tale of a Portree painter who was so fixated on capturing the ever-changing moods of grey that she found herself painting four different canvases in the span of a single day. Apparently, the local weather wasn't content with just one look—each passing moment demanded its own portrait.Reflecting on his past and looking to the future, William confesses a need for subject matter that truly resonates with him. Back in the day, he was a prolific railway photographer with a portfolio that got plenty of press and the satisfaction of mastering a craft he loved. Now, with a renewed sense of purpose, he's dipping his toes into photography once again—and you can catch his latest snaps on Instagram under the handle @shotatanangle.What do you make of this discussion? In April 2019, the quiet Welsh island of Anglesey was rocked by a crime so bizarre and brutal it seemed almost fictional.74-year-old Gerald Corrigan was outside his remote coastal home when he was struck by a single crossbow bolt - a weapon more associated with medieval warfare than modern-day Wales. What initially appeared to be a tragic accident quickly unraveled into something far more chilling. The Baptist Union of Wales has recently recognised a new type of minister. A 'Category 7 Minister' has a licence to pioneer. It may not be clear what a Pioneer Minister does, but there are more of them than we might think, across all the Christian denominations. For today's programme, Rosa Hunt travels to Anglesey and interviews 5 people involved in pioneering ministry. We meet the Reverend George Bearwood in Holyhead, who as well as being an Anglican vicar, has his own heavy metal radio show; Rev Deb Stammers, a Baptist minister in Holyhead, who is also a pioneer worker in the small village of Llanerchymedd; John Hay, who wrote a feasibility study about the future of Methodist churches on the Island; Hywel Meredydd, who planted a new church nearly 50 years ago in Llangefni, in a church formally pastored by Christmas Evans; and Rachel Radbourne, who leads a growing church for young families.

Show NotesWelcome back to The Angel Mystic podcast!I'm Amanda Tooke, and today we're diving deep into the fascinating topic of Angel numbers and what they truly mean for you. I get fired up about this subject because there's so much misinformation and commercialisation surrounding it. Angel numbers, those repetitive sequences like 111 or 222 that pop up on clocks, receipts, and license plates, are indeed powerful messages from the Universe. But their meanings are personal to you.In this episode, I'll explain how to interpret these signs in a way that resonates with your unique journey rather than relying on generic definitions. We'll explore how your Angels communicate through numbers, feathers, rainbows, or other signs, and I'll share practical steps to deepen your connection with them. You'll learn how to pause, reflect, trust your intuition, and build a relationship with your Angels.Your signs are dynamic and personal, not something that can be predefined. By the end of this episode, you'll have the tools to interpret your signs authentically and strengthen your spiritual connection. If you're eager to deepen your relationship with your Angels, consider joining me on our Angels in Anglesey retreat this November. Spots are limited, and you can find more details in the show notes.Stay tuned, trust your guidance, and remember—you're never alone.Host Bio:Amanda Tooke renowned Spiritual Teacher and NLP Manifestation Coach is the host of the Angel Mystic Podcast. Church Leadership – local, national and global Anthony and Ness discuss the challenges and opportunities of leading a church and a network of churches. Ness expressed her gratitude for being able to lead a local church and a network, as it allows her to connect with the complexities of church leadership and pass on her experiences. They also touched on the importance of humility, love, and grace in navigating pastoral issues within the next generation in church. Church Leadership Models and Adaptation Anthony and Ness discuss the future of church leadership and models. They agreed that the church should not professionalise leadership but should instead train and invest in leadership gifts. They also discussed the importance of understanding the context and culture to which they are called. Ness mentioned that Pioneer Church does not have a one-size-fits-all model, but rather adapts to the specific setting and context of each church or church plant. They also touched on the success of a bilingual model at Lighthouse Church, Anglesey. Anthony shared his positive experience visiting Lighthouse Church with his wife Zoe. Embracing Spiritual Gifts in Ministry They discuss the importance of embracing the spiritual gifts in their ministry. Ness emphasised the need for a high view of the spiritual gifts, proper training, and boundaries to ensure their effective use. She also highlighted the importance of creating space for these gifts and modeling good practice. They also stressed the significance of holding a high view of Scripture and honoring God's word and expressed a growing conviction about the centrality of the Word of God in their ministry. Bible Reading as Discipleship Tool Ness shared a story about a 22-year-old electrician who became a Christian after reading the King James version of the Bible. This experience inspired Ness to give away more Bibles and to encourage people to read the Bible with others. To facilitate this, they placed a QR code sticker in the front of the Bibles, directing people to a link for meeting up with someone to read the Bible together. Preparing for the Upcoming Launch Event Anthony and Ness discussed the upcoming LAUNCH event in June, with Ness expressing her excitement to be part of it. Anthony revealed the list of speakers, including Chip Ingram, Aaron Pierce and many others, for what they believe will be an important of gathering in preparing the church for the future. Ness shared her belief that they are in a John the Baptist era, calling for the church to prepare and get ready for the coming of the King. Anthony agreed, stating that this is a year of expansion and not a time to hold back. Spiritual Guidance for Younger Generations Anthony and Ness discussed the need for spiritual guidance and mentorship for the younger generation, particularly Gen. Z. Ness emphasized the importance of creating community and providing practical skills, such as cooking, to help young adults navigate life's challenges. They also discussed the potential of younger leaders stepping up into leadership roles and the need for churches to serve and support their communities. Ness prayed for the group, asking for trust in God's plans and guidance, and for the power of the Holy Spirit to align them with God's work. Upcoming Launch Event and Key Leaders Go to Launchcatalyst.org now to book in to the gathering Anthony and Ness discussed, which will focus on the theme of the "High Impact Church". Tacitus is the great historian of imperial Rome. His writing is beautiful, unsettling, extraordinarily persuasive. We know many of his likes and dislikes about people and politics, but facts about his personal life? Not so much. His memoir of Agricola tells us much fascinating detail about Roman Britain: that it's an island (the Roman fleet sailed all the way round, just to check), that it's very close to Spain (with only Ireland in between); that invading Anglesey was a great victory for the Romans. He notes that it rains a lot, but omits to mention the Druids. He is also, he says, dedicated to writing impartially. Natalie may disagree. Who needs evidence when you have Tacitus' persuasive prose? It's not as if we can cross-check, because so little of the written record of the time survives to us. Natalie's guest, (modern) historian Dan Snow, finds this hard to fathom. Her other guest, Professor Llewelyn Morgan, knows it's unwise to lament the lost work. We should value what remains and hope that some new bits of Tacitus may appear in the future. And it turns out that by boat, Britain IS actually close to Spain. Travelling overland was hard going in Tacitus' day, so compared to that, the sea journey to Spain was easy.Rock star mythologist' and reformed stand-up Natalie Haynes is obsessed with the ancient world. Here she explores key stories from ancient Rome and Greece that still have resonance today. They might be biographical, topographical, mythological or epic, but they are always hilarious, magical and tragic, mystifying and revelatory. And they tell us more about ourselves now than seems possible of stories from a couple of thousand years ago.Producer...Mary Ward-Lowery

In today's episode I talk to Richard Bland. Richard is the founder of the charity Bear Force. Bear Force the charity was established in 2023. The charity's goal is to provide tools for helping young children's mental health and assisting caregivers and schools. Bear Force and Bear Force Buddies aim to build positive mental health foundations from a very early age. He spent many years associated with the RAF Valley in Anglesey and did a lot of charity work with them, through his passion for aviation photography. Sadly by a twist of fate, Richard lost his son Drew to suicide, which turned his life around completely. At that time he had a teddy bear flying all over the world for charity. He was persuaded to write a children's book about his adventures, which was supported by the RAF and RAF Valley and it has sold thousands of copies. That took him on a different direction and he was introduced to Berni Hollywood, the entrepreneur and charity guru. Berni was embarking on a Transatlantic Boat race and wanted to take the teddy bear with him, which was the beginning of a successful collaboration. Today the charity has support from some of the most well known companies such as British Airways, Rolls Royce and the Red Arrows. AB Bear also began accompanying high profile people on their journeys, including H.R.H The Prince Of Wales. Richard talks about the tragic loss of his son, a deeply painful experience that profoundly impacted his life and his determination to transform his grief into a force for good, leading him to establish the charity Bear Force. Through Bear Force, Richard aims to provide support and resources for mental health, preventing similar tragedies from happening to others. His dedication to this cause is a testament to his love for his son and his commitment to making a difference. Hugh Warwick is an expert on hedgehogs but in his latest book, Cull of the Wild, he focuses on animals less native, and beloved. From grey squirrels in Anglesey to cane toads in Australia he explores the complex history of species control, and the ethics of killing in the name of conservation. The writer Olivia Laing turns her attention to the efforts to create paradise on earth. In The Garden Against Time she retells her own attempts to restore a walled garden in Suffolk while investigating the long history of gardens – real and imagined, follies and pleasure grounds.Producer: Katy Hickman
A Welsh cheesemaker which described itself as innovative and with the highest sustainability standards has announced it cannot continue in its current form. The 321 farmers who supply milk to Mona dairy on Anglesey have been reassured that an interim buyer for their milk has been found, while the dairy's owners search for new investment. The Campaign for National Parks and the Alliance for Welsh Designated Landscapes has produced a 10-point National Parks Action plan for the new Welsh government. The proposals include increased funding, an end to water pollution, improving sustainable travel links and a new National Park for North East Wales. Amidst fears over reduced numbers of earth worms across the UK, one farmer who supplies them to gardeners, is increasingly supplying to other farmers. Still, it will also address the broader implications of preserving indigenous magical traditions in a globalised world. Greg Jenner is joined by Dr Adam Chapman and comedian Kiri Pritchard-McLean to learn about the rise of the Tudor dynasty. The Tudors are probably the most famous ruling dynasty in British and English history. But where and when did the Tudor family actually originate? The answer lies in 13th-century Anglesey with a collection of modest landowners, who wouldn't have called themselves Tudor at all. So how did this titanic royal dynasty spring from these minor Welsh beginnings?
