Titolo: Legend of the Victorian EraSistema: Legend of the 5 Rings (La leggenda dei 5 anelli) FFGSetting: VittorianoGenere: Noir, Horror, Vittoriano, Investigativo

In three of the four nations of the UK, abortion remains a crime under legislation passed in 1861, subject to the exemptions from criminal liability in the Abortion Act 1967. Paradoxically, abortion was decriminalised in Northern Ireland in 2019, so that it is now seen as a matter of healthcare rather than the criminal law. Recent prosecutions in England under section 58 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 have reignited debate over whether abortion belongs in the criminal courts at all – https://www.theguardian.com/society/2025/may/13/i-hate-sitting-in-silence-now-nicola-packer-on-clearing-her-name-after-the-trauma-of-her-abortion-trial https://doctorsforchoiceuk.com/abortionlaw#:~:text=UK%20abortion%20law%3A%20Overview&text=In%201967%2C%20Parliament%20passed%20the,if%20authorised%20by%20two%20doctors. In this special 100th episode of Double Jeopardy, Ken Macdonald KC and Tim Owen KC are joined by two leading voices in the campaign for reform: Rachael Clarke, Head of Advocacy at BPAS (the British Pregnancy Advisory Service) and Trustee of Compassion in Dying; and Jonathan Lord, NHS Consultant Gynaecologist and Co-Chair of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists' Abortion Taskforce. Together, they explore the rise in criminal investigations into pregnancy loss and self-managed abortion, the implications of recent cases like Carla Foster (https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/20231018-R-v-FOSTER-final-approved-1.pdfand) and Sarah Catt, and the human cost of criminalising desperate women. They unpack new national policy guidance issued by the National Police Chiefs' Council on investigating stillbirths and miscarriages; the troubling use of digital surveillance in reproductive cases, and the proposed cross-party amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill that would finally remove women from the scope of the criminal law, thereby eliminating the bizarre distinction between the law of Northern Ireland and the other nations of the UK. What is the justification for threatening a woman with life imprisonment for ending a pregnancy? And why has Parliament decriminalised abortion in Northern Ireland, but not in the rest of the UK? This episode offers insider legal and medical perspectives on one of the most polarising and poorly understood areas of UK law—at a moment when calls for reform are louder than ever. ------ Double Jeopardy is presented by Ken Macdonald KC, former Director of Public Prosecutions, and Tim Owen KC, as they break down the legal and political issues in Britain. From high-profile legal cases to the evolving state of British democracy, Double Jeopardy offers expert legal commentary on the most pressing topics in UK law, politics, and human rights. Ken Macdonald KC served as Director of Public Prosecutions from 2003-2008, shaping modern prosecutorial policy and advocating for the rule of law. He is a former Warden of Wadham College, Oxford, a crossbench member of the House of Lords, and a leading writer, commentator and broadcaster on politics and the rule of law. Tim Owen KC has been involved in many of the most significant public, criminal and human rights law cases over the past four decades. Both bring unparalleled experience from the frontline of Britain's legal and political landscape. If you like The Rest Is Politics, Talking Politics, Law Pod UK and Today in Focus, you'll love Double Jeopardy.

When we think of serial killers, we tend to think of men—Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, Jack the Ripper. But in the 1800s, the deadliest killers often wore corsets. In fact, so many women were arrested for serial poisoning that the era became known as the “Golden Age of Arsenic.” Journey back in time to trace the crimes of Lydia Sherman, a Victorian Era femme fatale who left a trail of bodies in her wake. How did she — and women like her — evade capture for so long? And how did their murders help give rise to modern criminal forensics?Guests: Kristen Frederick-Frost, curator of science at the Smithsonian's National Musuem of American History Lisa Perrin, author and illustrator of The League of Lady Poisoners Deborah Blum, author of The Poisoner's Handbook. This week we are following a tale of transcontinental industrial espionage from the Victorian Era.Robert Fortune was a poor Scots horticulturalist who just so happened to have been born at a time when plant hunting was deemed to be of vital importance to the British Empire. Determined that his last name would not be his only fortune Robert agreed to travel to China to steal the secrets of their their most valuable commodity... Tea.Going deep undercover Robert would become the lynchpin in a plot to start a rival tea production industry in British controlled India. Of course this would mean long years away from his wife and children, but Robert seemed more than happy with this arrangement.Would he be caught? Would the plants he stole survive the journey to India? and would his disguise be deemed culturally insensitive to a modern audience? All these questions and more will be answered.Guest Host: Jack Heathcote Hosted on Acast. In the Victorian Era, back in the 1840sSpiritualism and Ghost Hunting went hand in hand. There were no fancy tools to work with back then but Richard said the Victorians were able to do wonders and he would trust a good medium over a spirit box or word generator. The article explores Victorian Christmas food traditions through three recipes that reflect the era's culinary practices: Turkey Soup: Derived from Isabella Beeton's The Book of Household Management (1861), this recipe used leftover turkey bones to create a rich, flavored soup, showcasing the use of branded ingredients like Harvey's Sauce. It highlights both resourcefulness and historical food influences. Roast Goose: A recipe from Bow Bells (1893) details a traditional roast goose, a popular alternative to turkey in Scotland and northern England. Instructions were less structured, relying on cooks' intuition and familiarity with techniques like scalding and basting. Cottage Christmas Pudding: From Eliza Acton's Modern Cookery (1845), this pudding included mashed potatoes to bulk up the recipe, reflecting rural or working-class adaptations. It combined affordable staples with luxurious ingredients like spices and dried fruits, emphasizing the festive desire for indulgence. Summary: Travel back in time with us to one of history's most prolific literary periods (and, if Holly says so herself, peak fashion as well). Today our hosts discuss books set between the 1830s and 1900, a period known commonly as the Victorian period after Queen Victoria of Britain. With a strong emphasis on social morality, industrialization and elaborate ornamentation, both romance and thriller stories set in this era are vivid, chaotic, and gothically influenced. Topics Discussed: The Dagger (3:58): Holly discussed Things in Jars by Jess Kidd, a mystery with fantastical elements following Bridie Devine, a female detective who investigates the kidnapping of Christabel Berwick. Cristabel is the secret daughter of Sir Edmund Athelstan Berwick; he is a wealthy collector of oddities and this daughter of his is rumored to have supernatural abilities–which have captured the unwanted attention of collectors trading curiosities in this age of discovery. Holly's key takeaways were: The characters are the stars of this book and bring wonderful quirky and eccentric energy. A few favorites include a charming tattooed boxer who happens to be a ghost, a newt-eating girl-maybe-mermaid, and a formidable seven-foot tall maid. The novel's setting in Victorian London adds to its gothic tone, with vivid descriptions of the city's foggy streets, eerie riverbanks, and strange, shadowy characters who dwell in its hidden corners. It is a perfect time period for this story, given the age of discovery and fascination with the strange and macabre while still hanging onto a lot of superstition. The writing (especially the first quarter) felt like it was trying too hard to fit every descriptive long word in, which can trip up a reader and prevent them from feeling super invested. That being said, over time that experience does improve and the end made even the unflappable Holly emotional. The Heart (15:35): Devin discussed The Perfect Crimes of Marian Hayes by Cat Sebastian, a Victorian-era romance following Marian Hayes, the Duchess of Clare, after she shoots and kills her husband. Due to a spot of blackmail, she connects with highwayman and con artist Rob Brooks and after some misunderstandings, some light bondage, and a mutual agreement the duo flee across the country to build, hopefully, a new future for them both. Devin's key takeaways were: Marian and Rob (as well as everyone else) are constrained throughout the story by the strict societal and cultural pressures mandated by the Patriarchy and the Aristocracy. Rob strives at all times to reject the privilege of his aristocratic history, and Marian seeks freedom from her abusive marriage (nailed it, killed him) and the fallout a woman can suffer when seeking liberation in the Victorian era. Eschewing dresses and feeling most comfortable in breeches, Marian is a heroine to root for. While each character has their own journey and there's a uniting plot similar to Robin Hood, everyone is empowered in their own way and the interplay of Rob's sunshine charisma and Marian's standoffish efficiency is a blast to read. While the tension and connection between Rob and Marian is strong from the start as the reader experiences the letters they write to each other (blackmail to banter, a new favorite trope), this is not a traditionally steamy book. Marian's trauma from her pregnancy and abusive marriage has reframed how she wants to experience intimacy, and Rob's acceptance of her situation makes modern men look pathetic compared to this Victorian king. 1851 it is, and the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations, also known as the Great Exhibition or the Crystal Palace Exhibition took place in Hyde Park, London, from 1 May to 15 October 1851. It was the first in a series of World's Fairs, exhibitions of culture and industry that became popular in the 19th century. Famous people of the time attended the Great Exhibition, including Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, Michael Faraday, Samuel Colt, writers like Charlotte Brontë, Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll, George Eliot, Alfred Tennyson, and William Makepeace Thackeray. Schweppes was the official sponsor. The Great Exhibition was a celebration of modern industrial technology and design - mainly for the British who were trying to show how through tech, the world would be a better place - leading the nations in innovations so to speak. Six million people, equivalent to a third of the entire population of Britain at the time, visited the Great Exhibition, averaging over 42 000 visitors a day, sometimes topping 100 000. Thomas Cook managed the travel arrangements for the Exhibition, and made the equivalent of 33.2 million pounds in today's cash - or 186 000 pounds back in 1851, and promptly used the money to found the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Science Museum, as well as the Natural History Museum. Inventor Frederick Bakewell demonstrated a precurser to something that we know as a Fax Machine. The New Zealand exhibit was well liked, featuring Maori crafts such as flax baskets, carved wooden objects, eel traps, mats, fish hooks and the scourge of the British army in Kiwiland, their hand clubs. A couple of conservative politicians let it be known they were not happy about the Exhibition, saying visitors would turn into a revolutionary mob. Considering that Karl Marx was part of the visitors - perhaps not unsurprisingly. But did Karl Marx use the services of Thomas Cook? Not exactly a question destined for a dissertation. This Exhibition went on to become a symbol of the Victorian Era. Meanwhile … a serious War in one of its colonies, the Cape was more than disquietening - it appeared this war was more a Victorian error. AS in mistake. amaNgqika chief Maqoma was causing Harry Smith sleepness nights, and Colonel Fordyce and his colleagues were fighting for their lives along the Amathola mountains. The Waterkloof ridges — in a place to the west of Fort Beaufort — was where the Khoekhoe and coloured marksmen made their greatest impact. The ex-Cape Mounted Rifles members amongst the rebels had other uses. They understood the British bugle calls, having been trained by the British, further exasperating men like Henry Somerset and Colonel Fordyce. The amaXhosa and Khoekhoe rebels were also much more organised than in previous wars against the invaders. They targeted the Messengers reading updates from British commanders intended for Grahamstown and been reading the reports, and some of the rebels were actually being supplied directly from Grahamstown itself. Then Henry seemed to receive an injection of spine - of determination. On November 6th 1851 he massed two large columns, one under Colonel Fordyce, and the other led by Colonel Michel. Unbeknownest to him, this was to be Fordyce's last mission. Michel's column had to advance up the Waterkloof aka Mount Misery, while Fordyce's column would wait above, on the summit. Michel would drive the rebels up the mountain, Fordyce would trap them and voila! Victory. It didn't quite work that way.

EPISODE 104: BURIED ALIVE During the late Victorian Era, the fear of being buried alive was very much real. Waves of cholera epidemics ravaged North America and Europe, leaving victims in near-dead states. Mirroring the concerns of the time, rumors spread about people being buried alive, so much so that many “safety coffins” and other graveside alerts were invented and implemented to prevent premature burial for the most decerning, and wealthy, of the Victorian Age. One such tall tale is that of Octavia Smith Hatcher of Pikeville, Kentucky. Whose death and burial have become a staple of Appalachian folk history. In a palatial South London home, a pained scream rang out into the night. As the residents of the home rushed to the aid of the man who had called out, the only thing they could do was watch whilst he writhed in pain. After the maid was sent to grab mustard and hot water to assist his gripe, it was plain to see that he'd been poisoned as his hands helplessly tried to calm his burned throat and everyone in the room knew that whatever happened next would be incredibly painful for him. After 3 agonising days, the man passed away but everyone who was in the house on the night of the poisoning was now a suspect and with the man having many an enemy, the murder case would unfold to become one of the Victorian Era's most shocking and scandalous whodunnits. Today on Macabre London, we uncover the murder of Charles Bravo and the mystery at The Priory. ------------------------Podcast: https://podfollow.com/1180202350Macabre London is a fortnightly podcast and YouTube show that delves into London's haunted and gruesome history alongside discovering Macabre mini Mysteries from all over the world!Be sure to check out my other podcast, Killers, Cults & Queens with Cheryl Hole https://podfollow.com/queens---------------------------SUPPORT ME————————ONE OFF DONATIONS: Paypal - paypal.me/macabrelondonKO-FI: ko-fi.com/macabrelondonPATREON: www.patreon.com/macabrelondonAMAZON WISHLIST - http://amzn.eu/dJxEf1VMERCH! - https://macabrelondon-shop.fourthwall.comPATREON - www.patreon.com/macabrelondon——————————-Thank you to our executive producer patrons - Christina, Christophe, Lisa, M, Ravelle, Sally, Sam, Sarah, Terri, Teresa, Vee, VeronicaAnd to all of our wonderful £5 tier patrons...AmyAndreaAndrewClaire RClaire SCreepy PaperDavid RDeniseHelenIngeJoKathrynKellyLindalLiz RachelSabrinaShannonTalliThe Paranormal PrincessVeeZaraZozoLAMAnd thanks to all other patrons too!————————SOCIAL MEDIA---------------------------------------------Insta: @nikkimacabrelondonX: @macabrelondonTikTok: @macabrelondonFacebook: @macabrelondonEmail: macabrelondon@hotmail.com Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast.
