Residents along the Essex coast awoke in the early hours of 1st February 1953 to a storm surge sweeping across the land. Over 300 people lost their lives in the UK. Over a third of them were in Essex. 59 perished on Canvey Island alone. Footage from the time show homes, holiday camps and buisnesses submerged with just the roof tops above the water. Lesser told is the story of how farmland was affected with many animals dieing in the water or needing to be put down as they became trapped by the water with no escpade. Cherry Borroughs has written her first book called "The Farmer And The Fury". This fiction book is based on true stories from people who remember that night, including Cherry's husband who was a child on his parents farm in February 1953 on Foulness Island. Owen found about more about how The Great Flood affected rural parts of Essex from Cherry and how she found the process of writting the book. If you've got a story, Owen would like to hear from you! True House Stories Podcast with special guests by Lenny Fontana
TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ COLIN HUDD # 089 - PART 2 Ever since dance music first swelled up in the UK, Colin Hudd has been riding the crest of the waves. Beginning his monumental journey, with humble beginnings working as a mobile DJ from 1971 to 1976, This laid the foundations of his DJ career today. Colin began a residency in 1976 at ‘The Monica' on Canvey Island, a year later gaining another residency at ‘Wings', Gravesend End. After passing an audition, Colin moved from ‘Monica' to ‘Goldmine', a residency he kept until 1981. In those days Colin had already established a respected reputation among the soul and funk clubs of the time. He had been a regular at Canvey's legendary ‘Goldmine' and was still on a high from winning the ‘Blues & Soul Club' DJ award. His profile gained momentum enough for him to be noticed and given his now legendary run at ‘Flicks' which ran from 1978 through to 1987. But, from as early as 1986, when the rest of the world was still listening to soul and the new romantics, Colin had already started leaning towards an entirely new genre of dance music. Little did he know that the music he had recognised as something more than a ‘fad' would become the global phenomenon it is still today; House Music. Colin has always been ahead of his time. From when he discovered house music in 1986 when he was advised to leave this new ‘noise' alone and stick to the soul that had worked so well for him, but, going with his instincts; he found himself pioneering a dance revolution. His technical ability and creative foresight enabled him to go on to headline landmark clubs such as Heaven, Legends, Ministry of Sound, World Dance, Pure Sex, and Spectrum/Land of Oz. Even bigger events were round the corner. His residency at Spectrum found him working alongside Paul Oakenfold a man he remains good friends with today. By that time house music had begun to take hold and Colin and Paul found themselves playing to packed dance floors night after night, Leading to Colin and Paul supporting U2 on their Zooropa tour. It was inevitable that Colin would turn to producing his own music. He worked as the Manic MCs and Audio Deluxe, whilst remixing PP Arnold, Billy Idol and a host of other well-respected artists.

This is the first Strange Stories podcast (without the UK). Since I started podcasting in June 2018, I wanted to call my podcast 'Strange Stories'but the name was taken at that time. I think it is available now, so welcome to Strange Stories. This is a short one, cryptozoology, so doomed to a low download, but I hope you enjoy it. This is the last podcast of series 4, I will be back at the end of August. Happy Holidays.
This tale is about a legendary guitar hero who has officially cheated death. To successive generations of guitar aficionados, Wilko Johnson is a cult figure in the rock world. He's been a Blockhead and a founding member of Canvey Island's celebrated punk precursors: Dr Feelgood whose unwavering devotion to old-fashioned rhythm and blues and Wilko's explosive guitar playing inspired everyone from Paul Weller to Joe Strummer. Life made a cruel twist in 2012 when Wilko was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer but it led to the most extraordinary year of his life which started with a farewell tour, included a part in Game of Thrones and an album with Roger Daltrey, and then culminated with the most surreal experience of all: a cure. The tracks features are: Roxette and Milk & Alcohol by Dr Feelgood, Going Back Home by Wilko Johnson and Roger Daltrey from their album Going Back Home, and Say Goodbye from Wilko Johnson's album Blow Your Mind. To learn more about Wilko Johnson and his music visit wilkojohnson.com
Episode #169 of The Coaches Network Podcast. The guest for this episode is Alex Inglethorpe.Alex is the Academy manager at Liverpool, charged with developing an environment in which players and staff can thrive and overseeing a style of play that mirrors Jürgen Klopp's senior team.He was originally appointed U21 coach in November 2012 and joined the Reds from Tottenham after six years worth of service at White Hart Lane.As a player, Inglethorpe's career began at Watford, where he played in the attacking midfield role, sometimes pushing further on to play as a striker.Following a loan spell at Barnet in 1995, Inglethorpe signed for Leyton Orient before making the switch to Exeter City in 2000, where, but for a brief loan at Canvey Island, he played-out the final days of his on-pitch career.Inglethorpe's first role in the dug-out came at Surrey-based side Leatherhead, from where he moved on to Leyton Orient as U19 coach in January 2004.Some nine months later, he took up the reins as manager of his former club Exeter and during his tenure there, the non-league outfit recorded a memorable 0-0 draw at Old Trafford against Manchester United in the FA Cup third round.Inglethorpe also served as assistant manager of the England National Game XI - a team that represents the Three Lions at non-league level - but he left the post in October 2005.In June 2006, he joined Tottenham and after Martin Jol's sacking, served as assistant to caretaker manager Clive Allen until the appointment of Juande Ramos. In November 2012 he arrived at Liverpool's Academy to replace Rodolfo Borrell as U21 manager after the Spaniard moved on to the role of head of academy coaching before later being promoted into the role of Academy Manager.Alex joins Coach Yas to share some insights gained in his journey to date as well some fundamentals to take into consideration in forging a career in the game. It's play-off time in Step 3 and Step 4 with also the inter-step play-offs deciding who comes up or who goes down from Steps 4 and 5. We speak with two managers with Play-offs e ahead this Bank holiday weekend as their long seasons draw to a close. First up with the play-offs starting Friday evening we speak with a manager hoping to continue this side's current run and secure promotion in that Friday play-off in the Isthmian North. Canvey Island gaffer Brad Wellmen is less than a year in the job but has been chalking off milestones every step of the way, can he finish that with promotion? On Monday Jimmy Dean leads his team into the playoff final for the Southern League Premier Central. It's seven years since he first took charge with the club in Step 6, two of those were wiped out through COVID so another promotion this time out would be a truly remarkable achievement. Step 2 football he admits would be an even bigger challenge but one he's keen to give a go-to. Helping me pull together the rest of the week's news Matt Badcock Editor at large at The Non League League Paper joins me as we also analyse the final weeks of the National League season.
Karl Whitney recalls the unlovely Central Motorway area of Newcastle upon Tyne, and how he found himself at home there. Zoë Howe takes us to Canvey Island in the Thames Estuary, low-lying outpost of a cockney diaspora.

Paul Holloway's second guest on Fuzzcast is Wilko Johnson. Wilko made his name as guitar player and songwriter with Dr Feelgood. Hailing out of Canvey Island the band are widely acknowledged as the best band on London's pub rock scene in the mid 70's which heavily influenced the birth of punk rock. The band were riding high after their live album Stupidity topped the UK charts in 1976 but Wilko left the Feelgood's after a spectacular bust up with frontman Lee Brilleaux whilst recording the band's fourth album Sneaking Suspicion the following year. Wilko was later invited to join the Blockheads by Ian Dury and recorded the Laughter album with the band. During his time with the Blockheads Wilko formed a friendship with bass player Norman Watt-Roy who still plays in his 3 piece band today together with drummer Dylan Howe. There was a resurge in interest in the Feelgood's in 2009 when Julien Temple released his excellent documentary film, Oil City Confidential. On the back of the film Wilko landed his first acting role with a part in Game of Thorns as House Lancaster executioner See Ilyn Payne. In 2013 Wilko was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given less than a year to live. He refused chemopathy and crammed into what he thought was his last year; trips to Japan, a farewell tour, recording a best selling album with Roger Daltry and making another film The Ecstasy of Wilko Johnson with Julien Temple about his own mortality. However, a fan who happened to be a cancer specialist perseuded Wilko to take a second opinion and Wilko underwent a major operation which cured him from cancer. In 2016 Wilko published his autobiography Don't You Leave Me Here and in 2018 he released Blow Your MInd, an album of new material. Wilko was still gigging until Covid stuck.
