Acclaimed standup, animator, filmmaker and children's author Alasdair Beckett-King cannot overstate how much of a Red Dwarf fan he was back in the day. Case in point: he was angered by CGI Starbug in the way only a true fan can be. The show even influenced his taste in food… and his accent! He loved rekindling his youthful obsession for the podcast. Turning our focus to series 5 episode 5, Demons and Angels, we cover all the ‘highs' and ‘lows', including: hilarious high Kryten, evil horny Rimmer, grotesque comic violence, fantastic miniatures, absent audiences, action hero Lister, that laugh, those fangs, and the rock n roll comedy swagger of Grant and Naylor. On this week's episode of Local Legends, Martin gathers round the campfire to talk about the folklore of Middlesex with the hosts of The Loremen Podcast James Shakeshaft and Alasdair Beckett-King.Over seven years ago, when they were fairly early in their careers as stand-up comedians, James and Alasdair found themselves chatting about folklore on a road trip to the South West. After amusing one another in the car, they wondered if the world might like to be in on the joke. So The Loremen was born. Ever since, and across five series, they have been poking into the weird and wonderful world of half-true stories from days of yore, and sharing their explorations, much to the Internet's collective glee.In this episode, Martin steers James and Alasdair's attentions toward the lore of the historic county where they met - which is better known today as London. Encompassing buried temples beneath the financial district, mysterious automata, dragons, The London Monster, myths of gigantic kings, famous ghosts, and a surprising amount of chat about The Muppets, it's perhaps the giggliest episode of Local Legends we've released, but that's no bad thing! Learn more about The Loremen here: https://www.loremenpodcast.com/The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. On this week's episode we're headed back to Middlesex, the historic county better known as London, and Martin is telling a whopper of a story, all about the horrors unearthed during the digging of the city's underground... We start off chatting about St Serf and his wild and crazy life, dragon slaying and all, after which we move on to Middlesex! In addition to talking about the Palace of Westminster, the London Stone, and the Temple of Mithras underneath the Bloomberg building, we consider the relative merits of a few options in this week's County Dish, including Chelsea Buns and Jellied Eels! After some folkloric chat about topics including Old Mother Redcap, the head of the giant Bran, buried under the Tower of London, and the ghosts of Newgate Prison, plus some excerpts from this week's Local Legends interview with hosts of the The Loremen podcast James Shakeshaft and Alasdair Beckett-King, it's on to the main event: Martin's story "The Crossrail Horror."Speak to you again on Thursday for our new Dying Arts bonus episode all about Besom and Broom Making! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. We're back!A quick note to say that the first episode of the sixth season had a bit of a messed up audio file (Masud going away obviously jinxed us) but we have cleaned up to the best of our abilities. Going forward, all should be resolved tech wise and subsequent episodes won't have this hiccup...In February 1945, 70 year old Charles Walton is found near his Warwickshire home brutally murdered and impaled to the ground through his neck with his own pitchfork. Who did it? Above Peter's head is the BBC logo (three individual white squares house each of the three letters). Bottom centre and overlaying the image are the words "In Touch" and the Radio 4 logo (the word Radio in a bold white font, with the number 4 inside a white circle). The background is a bright mid-blue with two rectangles angled diagonally to the right. Both are behind Peter, one of a darker blue and the other is a lighter blue.
Chris McCausland asks a panel of comedians to live in an audio only world, deciphering brainteaser sound cues for points and pride whilst trying not to muck about too much along the way. In this episode, contestants try to figure out what on earth is being advertised on the TV, guess what famous objects or locations children are trying to describe, and work out the age of women based solely on the sound of their voice. The competing comedians are Rhys James and Donna Preston, taking on Alasdair Beckett-King and Ria Lina. Our guest for this episode is the hilarious comedian Alasdair Beckett-King. He tells us why he decided to write a children's murder mystery book, even though he has no kids and has never killed anyone. We talk about how Alasdair went from doing shit gigs in terrible pubs with us to starring on Mock the Week. He explains how a failure at film school kicked off his comedy career, and why he believes a bad first gig is better than a good one. Helen excels herself with the running order for this episode, managing to spell our guest's name wrong, reveal a weird fixation with his age, and insult his appearance. Alasdair tells us what it's like to be a person of hair colour, and we unfairly test his knowledge of parenting with a stupid quiz. ABK's brilliant book, Montgomery Bonbon: Murder at the Museum, is out on 2 February. Word count update: 34,892. Beware traveller! For Northumberland's Simonside Hills are the setting for this week's tale. Those rugged crags are thick with evil, evil creatures who want nothing more than to lure you to your doom. Fear not! Alasdair Beckett-King is here to warn of of their tricksy ways, while James Shakeshaft looks on, scornfully. Hear how a Shakeshaft-type spent a miserable night in a horrible little cottage, while an ABK-esque sceptic came a cropper in a bog. It's all the work of the nastiest faerie-folk in the Unseelie Court. Loreboys nether say die! Alasdair Beckett-King sends an audio postcard from Scotland's own Edinburgh. What does he get up to between shows? Find out here!
In the smoking room of the Loregentleman's Club, Mr James Shakeshaft puffed on his pipe with a look of consternation. He found the silence intolerable. “D— it, man,” he said at last, “what the devil did you mean by your message? ‘I saw a house that wasn't quite right,' what a load of old rot.” Mr Alasdair Beckett-King, seated in the chair opposite, peered at Shakeshaft through a yellowish haze and his drooping eyes sparkled in the firelight... This evening's podcast begins with Alasdair telling James a tale about the Midlands. A land that is neither North nor South. A land replete with mystery and intrigue. A land whose accent neither Loregent can do. Northamptonshire. Beginning with the three-sided folly of Ruston Triangular Lodge, the boys discover a drumming well, a perambulating doll and a haunted church that's thick... wi' rabbits. Loreboys nether say die!
