Jesus, by his miraculous power, is able to feed 5,000+ people with a few loaves of bread and fish. It's a miracle! And he does so by empowering his disciples to serve the crowds. Today, Jesus is still equipping and empowering ordinary people like you and me to serve others. We've all been there before. We feel too busy to even eat. Thankfully, Jesus calls us out of the busyness and to rest in him. In Mark 6, Jesus says to his disciples, "Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while." And Jesus invites us to find rest in him, too. What is worship? Is it simply singing a few songs? Could it be that worship is much more than we ever imagined? In Romans 12, we read that true worship is offering every part of us to God. Two practices that help us do that more and more are worshipping in community and praying. Download the sermon notes. The #1 thing you can do for the health of your marriage is to become healthy yourself. So, how can we help one another become emotionally healthy? Dr. Mark Foster shares three questions to consider before getting married and biblical guidance for loving well. Download the sermon notes. The beginning of marriage is exciting, but it's also challenging--particularly when you realize your spouse's habits, expectations, and dreams are much different than your own. And when children enter the picture, everything else goes out the window as we just try to get by. But when we clothe ourselves with the character of Jesus, we can learn to navigate difference and conflict so that we're able "to love and to cherish" one another for a lifetime. In this sermon, we explore contemporary dating, Scriptures pertaining to singleness, and what the church can do to equip single people. Download the sermon notes. Did you know that it is possible to do loving deeds without actually having love? Jonah is a great example of this. Although he (eventually) went to Nineveh, he still harbored ill feelings toward the Ninevites. Unlike Jonah, we can choose "the most excellent way" and can join God in loving all people! "Yes." It's a short, simple word. A word we probaby say many times each day. However, saying "yes" to God is the best decision we can make. In God's Kingdom, even one "yes" can go a long way. Download the sermon notes. (https://acts2umc.org/wp-content/uploads/sermons/2020/01/2020-Jan-17-1C.pdf)
Is it possible to become familiar with God's voice? Jesus certainly thought so. Through experience and examination, we, too, can become more familiar with God's voice and learn to discern it from other voices. Download the sermon notes. It's the most wonderful time of the year...for some of us. For others, this time of the year can be filled with disappointments and unmet expectations. In Matthew 2, we see that the first Christmas ever did not go how Mary and Joseph had expected. When we, too, find ourselves in difficult, unexpected places in life, we can rest in God's love and find comfort in community. Download the sermon notes. Aim at joy and you’ll miss it. Joy happens while we are busy serving others, in the quiet of a forest, or in the prayer of thanks for another day of grace from Jesus. Jesus is the One who brings hope, even when we find ourselves in situations that seem hopeless. As we follow Jesus, our Living Hope, we can share his great hope with those around us. Also, as a church, we believe fellowship and discussion are important. Following this brief message, there are some questions that we discussed around tables on Friday night. You are invited to listen to them and reflect upon them.
Amen" is often thought of as a way to end prayers. However, "amen" can also be a powerful prayer in itself. When we pray "amen," we are proclaiming God's goodness, aligning ourselves with God's will, honoring covenant, and saying, "Let it be so!" Amen! Download the sermon notes. Is it possible to give thanks, even when things around us seem difficult? The author of Psalm 136 says, "Yes." Because of God's character, creation, community, and care for daily needs, we can be people who continually pray this simple: "Thanks." Download the sermon notes. With so much to do, life can easily feel overwhelming. King Solomon, in the Old Testament, also felt overwhelmed, which led him to ask God for help. In the Bible, we read the greatest story of all time: the story of a loving God who willingly died and rose again to restore us. The most important thing we can do as a church is love Jesus. When we fall more and more in love with Jesus, our lives will be transformed. A life lived solely to be seen by others is far from the abundant life Christ has for us. A life lived for God, the Audience of One, is the happiest and holiest life. The instructions God gives us are good and life-giving, and in them we learn how to love God and neighbor better. We all go through times when God's voice seems silent. Some have called it "the dark night of the soul." In the Bible, we read about people who also went through these dark nights. God's voice can be difficult to hear, as the boy Samuel found out. When Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday, it wasn't just one glorious moment. It was the culmination of God's saving work that began with the creation of the universe, and it's the source of our hope for the future and the beginning of God's new creation when all things will be made right.
