Every musician wants to be heard. But what if you're the reason no one's listening? In today's podcast episode, “Cooking for Ghosts” I talk about a tour-van convo with my buddy Matt Patrick, who dropped a line that punched me in the gut: Making music but avoiding self-promotion is like cooking all day at home, then whining about why you don't have a restaurant yet.” We talk about the myth of “getting discovered,” the real war between art and exposure, and why it's not about selling out - it's about putting the damn food on the table.

One of the greatest shows on Earth has been going on now for several months in Hawaii, where the Kīlauea volcano at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park has been erupting since late December. The Kīlauea volcano is the most active volcano on Earth. It's also a relatively safe volcano in that it spends most of its time simmering and bubbling without any spectacularly explosive eruptions. But lately it has been putting on some incredible shows of lava fountains, with one glowing string of magma soaring about 1,000 feet in the air, a truly spectacular sight to see.  To understand what's going on with Kīlauea and what danger it poses, we're joined today by Matt Patrick, a research geologist with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

For 18 years, the PIMCO has conducted its annual U.S. Defined Contribution Consulting Study. One of the longest-running studies of its kind, it aims to understand what retirement consultants are thinking, seeing, and planning to do next. The firm interviews some of the most influential DC-focused consultants in the country, including advisors at CAPTRUST. The respondents this year represent 15,000 U.S. retirement plans and almost $9 trillion in assets.   In this episode of Revamping Retirement, your hosts Matt Patrick and Peter Ruffel welcome PIMCO's Vidur Mehra and Joseph Szalay to find out what's trending, what's challenging, and what's new the world of defined contributions, from plan design to evaluating retirement income solutions. PIMCO has distributed this material for informational purposes only. The 2024 PIMCO US Defined Contribution Consulting Study seeks to help consultants, advisors and plan sponsors understand the breadth of views and consulting services available within the defined contribution (DC) marketplace. The 2024 study captures data, trends and opinions from 28 consulting and advisory firms who serve over 15,379 clients with aggregate DC assets in excess of $7.94 trillion. All responses were collected from January 8, 2024 through February 26, 2024.   All investments contain risk and may lose value. Investing in the bond market is subject to risks, including market, interest rate, issuer, credit, inflation risk, and liquidity risk. The value of most bonds and bond strategies are impacted by changes in interest rates. Bonds and bond strategies with longer durations tend to be more sensitive and volatile than those with shorter durations; bond prices generally fall as interest rates rise, and low interest rate environments increase this risk. Reductions in bond counterparty capacity may contribute to decreased market liquidity and increased price volatility. Bond investments may be worth more or less than the original cost when redeemed. Commodities contain heightened risk, including market, political, regulatory and natural conditions, and may not be appropriate for all investors. Investing in foreign-denominated and/or -domiciled securities may involve heightened risk due to currency fluctuations, and economic and political risks, which may be enhanced in emerging markets. High yield, lower-rated securities involve greater risk than higher-rated securities; portfolios that invest in them may be subject to greater levels of credit and liquidity risk than portfolios that do not. Inflation-linked bonds (ILBs) issued by the various governments around the world are fixed-income securities whose principal value is periodically adjusted according to the rate of inflation. Repayment upon maturity of the original principal as adjusted for inflation is guaranteed by the government that issues them. Neither the current market value of inflation-indexed bonds nor the value a portfolio that invests in ILBs is guaranteed, and either or both may fluctuate. ILBs decline in value when real interest rates rise. In certain interest rate environments, such as when real interest rates are rising faster than nominal interest rates, ILBs may experience greater losses than other fixed income securities with similar durations. The value of real estate and portfolios that invest in real estate may fluctuate due to: losses from casualty or condemnation, changes in local and general economic conditions, supply and demand, interest rates, property tax rates, regulatory limitations on rents, zoning laws, and operating expenses. Stable value wrap contracts are subject to credit and management risk. Management risk is the risk that the investment techniques and risk analyses applied by an investment manager will not produce the desired results, and that certain policies or developments may affect the investment techniques available to the manager in connection with managing a strategy. Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) are ILBs issued by the U.S. government. Diversification does not ensure against loss.   Glide Path is the asset allocation within a Target Date Strategy (also known as a Lifecycle or Target Maturity strategy) that adjusts over time as the participant's age increases and their time horizon to retirement shortens. The basis of the Glide Path is to reduce the portfolio risk as the participant's time horizon decreases. Typically, younger participants with a longer time horizon to retirement have sufficient time to recover from market losses, their investment risk level is higher, and they are able to make larger contributions (depending on various factors such as salary, savings, account balance, etc.). Generally, older participants and eligible retirees have shorter time horizons to retirement and their investment risk level declines as preserving income wealth becomes more important. De-risking strategy is based on a function of plan funded status. As plan funded status improves, clients may be interested in reducing their plan funded status volatility by shifting out of risk assets and into liability-hedging fixed income.  Target Date Funds are designed to provide investors with a retirement solution tailored to the time when they expect to retire or plan to start withdrawing money (the "target date"). Target Date Funds will gradually shift their emphasis from more aggressive investments to more conservative ones based on their target dates. Target Date Funds invest in other funds and instruments based on a long-term asset allocation glide path, and performance is subject to underlying investment weightings, which will change over time. An investment in a Target Date Fund does not eliminate the need for an investor to determine whether a Fund is appropriate for his or her financial situation. An investment in a Fund is not guaranteed. Investors may experience losses, including losses near, at, or after the target date, and there is no guarantee that a Fund will provide adequate income at and through retirement. For this edition of Overdrive Radio, DAT Freight and Analytics' Chief Marketing Officer Jeff Hopper, who's been with the company now for decades, notes the undeniable spike in double brokering, in identity theft and hop-in, hop-out "take the money and run" and other schemes that has led to a doubling of staff in DAT's compliance department as well as a host of other in-process security enhancements there: https://www.overdriveonline.com/business/article/15542218/dat-steps-up-fight-against-freight-fraud-but-is-it-enough DAT's not alone, of course -- competitors at Truckstop.com have been doing similar things when it comes ID'ing the various types of “bad behavior” and working with the good guys out there to put a stop to it where possible, in no small part thanks to the efforts of a myriad of small business truckers to raise the temperature around the issue of double brokering and other fraud: https://www.overdriveonline.com/business/article/15541639/the-third-parties-following-truckers-around-freight-networks Among those is Matthew Patrick, with GMH Transportation. Regular readers may recall his two-part "The double-brokering slow burn" at OverdriveOnline.com a couple weeks back: https://www.overdriveonline.com/overdrive-extra/article/15543642/double-brokering-scourge-how-it-works-how-to-fight-back The stories outlined a year and more's worth of efforts undertaken to identify some of the bad actors and take action to get them removed from the platforms where they ply their “trade.' DAT's Jeff Hopper in today's episode of Overdrive Radio called it all organized cyber crime, really. Before our talk with Hopper featured in this episode, we share a particular case that Patrick sent along earlier this week at about the same time we were getting ready to talk to Hopper. The case involved two different examples in which two different brokers' loads were double-brokered by a single entity, the “Cheetah Import and Export” broker, MC# 1477261. What stood out to Patrick was that in each double-brokered load case, Cheetah offered considerably more to move the load than what the original brokers offered a carrier, suggestive of a company in what Patrick calls the “take the money run” phase of a double broker's evolution. You know the story if you've read Overdrive over years now -- run up as much in revenue as you can, stiff all the carriers, and disappear into the ether when the bond is cashed and canceled: https://www.overdriveonline.com/business/article/14897461/broker-scams-owneroperators-and-fleets-need-to-be-aware-of Over the course of the last few days, it looks like that particular broker's bond company has notified the feds of impending cancelation -- a bond that was effective starting in early August this year is now set to cancel September 29, flagged in FMCSA's Licensing and Insurance public portal as such. We called the bond company the morning of Friday, September 1, and they noted five claims for nonpayment already, the largest of the claims for $5,000. Attempts to contact the broker by phone for comment yielded only a day's-long busy signal. Email then sent to the entity's primary contact laid out all of these details and asked if the company planned to respond to claims on the bond. That gleaned only a short response in an unsigned return email from a rep with the display name "Gevork Sulian": “What are you talking about? What happened? We are 1 year in this industry and never had a problem with our carriers.” As far as Matt Patrick knows, despite having filed complaints against this particular company, they were still able to post loads on DAT as of Friday. DAT reps assured that that they are investigating the complaints, but be forewarned if this company comes calling, or you run across any company's overly high rates on the boards. Scams abound, as Jeff Hopper further emphasizes in today's edition of Overdrive Radio.

The ACTS 29 Network, once the undeniable powerhouse in the Church Planting universe, has significantly declined in the last ten years. Pastors Chase Davis and Matt Patrick speak openly in this American Reformer piece about the root causes of this abysmal failure among the leadership and what eventually led them to leave the Network. Chase and Matt exposed the video interaction where they were officially disfellowshipped from the network. Since then, God has blessed their labors in Boulder, CO, and the Network continues declining significantly and turning the leadership over to woke ideologues. As Chase observes in the article: Acts 29 was always committed to gospel-centered ministry, complementarian theology, missional innovation, Spirit-led pneumatology, and Calvinist soteriology. However, the scandal-plagued organization has failed to meet the needs of the hour with grace and truth. Churning through leaders and tolerating trans ideology in pulpits, this once strong church network has outkicked its coverage, losing the moral clarity our times of disorder and particular depravity demand and the courageous conviction it once possessed. Constant board turnover, network realignment, and bloated bureaucracy speak to an organization building the plane as it flies rather than instilling confidence and stability in its member churches.  This is a fascinating interview to give you a summary of the past, present, and future of ACTS 29. On January 17, 2023, Acts 29 removed our church from the network without warning. We had been members in good standing in Acts 29 for 12 years. There was no indication that this action would be taken against our church. It was a unilateral decision made by the board of the network. The removal was announced to us over a call and no written documentation was provided. There is no process of appeal. In this episode, Matt Patrick and I share not just our experience in being removed from the network but also the audio of the phone call where they kicked our church out. We felt burdened to release this audio as lies have been told to prospective Acts 29 churches regarding our removal. Given the state of the network, we feel it is our responsibility to provide transparency to our brothers currently pastoring Acts 29 affiliated churches about the precarious position in which their fellowship rests.Support the showSign up for the Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/chasedavisFollow Full Proof Theology on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/fullprooftheology/Follow Full Proof Theology on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/fullprooftheology/

In this episode, I talk with Michael Thiessen about church culture and evangelical leadership in Canada. We discuss his recent departure from the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptists (FEB) and the precipitating events which lead to his exit. There are many questions today surrounding the viability of the evangelical approach to cultural engagement particularly as it relates to politics. We explore the topic of presuppositionalism and biblical sufficiency unpacking the authority of pastors and their responsibility to teach the nations to obey all that Christ has commanded.Bio - Michael Thiessen, President of Liberty Coalition Canada, lives in Georgetown, Kentucky with his family where he is planting a church called Royal Springs Chapel. He is the former Associate Director of Church Planting for the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptists in Canada. He hosts a podcast called Open Mike with Michael Thiessen. The US Geological Survey operates five different volcano observatories around the country. These observatories monitor real-time volcanic, hydrothermal, and earthquake activity in Alaska, the Cascade Mountains, California's Long Valley Caldera, Yellowstone National Park, and the State of Hawaii.    There are virtual partnerships between federal and state agencies, university-based researchers, and scientists. Their work involves monitoring, measuring, and analyzing data, all helping to increase our understanding of these powerful and fascinating geologic forces. This week Lynn Riddick catches up with Matt Patrick, a research geologist at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. He and his colleagues have seen quite a bit of awe-inspiring volcanic action recently, with eruptions from Mauna Loa and Kīlauea within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
