On this episode of Spaceport Radio, Frank Jacobus heads back to our Spaceport to talk with Mr Haunt and me about the underdog, our collective definitions of success, and why we were wrong to pick on Tony Romo. Frank's unique perspective shows how we might sometimes fall into cliches and assumptions when judging someone's success, even if the numbers show a different story. We also talk about what motivates someone to keep working and achieving even after having what seems to us all the success imaginable... and how that can sometimes go in a tragic direction. Frank Jacobus, AIA is Principal of SILO, and is Associate Professor and Associate Department Head in the Fay Jones School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas. From 2016 - 2018 he was 21st Century Chair of Building Technologies at the FJSoA where he lead design-build, fabrication, and advanced technology initiatives. Frank taught previously at the University of Idaho. He has a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Cooper Union and an MArch II from the University of Texas. On this episode of Spaceport Radio, I talk with my friend Tony Manard about damn near everything. We talk Memphis, music, life in the South, the human condition, politics, compassion, the pandemic, and a little bit of Elvis. When you play his records or hear him play live, you get just about as honest a glimpse into what he's all about as is possible. His songs are unapologetically honest, alive, and timeless. It is a pleasure hearing about what motivates him, his history, and his process of bringing literature into music. Tony Manard has this to say about himself: "I am Memphis born and raised. I am active in the songwriting community here. I have played guitar in bands, worked as a stage hand, television engineer, cable guy, bingo card seller, and once as a pyrotechnics man for a rodeo. I'm a third generation (that I know of) bullshitter. I have collected stories and characters my whole life. My folks were teachers. I have been married forever, had kids too young, got them grown and am now resuming questionable behaviors. I also play occasionally with "The Big Ole Band" at venues in town. I typically go solo on the road. I got a guitar, a head full of songs and stories, a fairly reliable mini van and a wife that mostly keeps me out of trouble. I would love to come share some songs and laughs with you!" On this episode of Spaceport Radio, Mr. Haunt and I discuss the varying degrees of childhood trauma, and how even seemingly subtle memories can inhibit growth and achievement decades later. We also get into our annoyance with deifying people solely for their financial wealth and success. And what is success, really? We should each define success differently, yet we talk about society's tendency to make success a very specific goal that carries with it impossible standards that truly don't apply to most of us. And role models! Who are your role models? It's a harder question than you think. On this episode of Spaceport Radio, I talk with my friend Jeremie Serrano about his daily life as a full-time artist, and what that means. (Spoiler alert: full-time artists don't just draw all day.) We talk about Puerto Rican family and culture, why he quit his day job to focus on his artistic career, and the societal pressure to feel happy all the time. Jeremie's brand is full of honesty--he shares his ups AND his downs on social media, which has earned him a loyal following that is always eager to hear his perspective on everything from art and culture to veganism and social activism. We even sneak in some of his tips for Instagram! Jeremie Serrano is the owner of the website La Comida de Jeremie. Jeremie is a self-taught Artist and Chef residing in Memphis, TN. He was born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, raised in the city of Bridgeport, CT. On this episode of Spaceport Radio, Mr. Haunt and I discuss two things that on the surface sound extremely cynical and jaded (and even counter-intuitive to any kind of creative endeavor) but have helped us both feel extremely accomplished and free in our lives and careers. The first concept is to know your limitations, to know that you cannot be good at all the things you need to do to, whatever that is. The second is to know when to give up. We also talk about some famous and successful people that utilize these ideas, including Penn Jillette and (ugh) Tom Brady. We get a little sports heavy in order to show just that no matter how great an athlete might be, they still need a lot of help and a lot of luck, and manifesting both those things consistently in order to succeed is perhaps their most important skill. On this episode of Spaceport Radio, Reed and I catch up with my friend Tom Ashton about life as a guitarist for eminent post-punk band The March Violets. his long career as a composer for films. what it was like living in the 'goth ground zero' of Leeds in the 80s, producing albums in his Athens, Georgia studio, and what bands he has an eye on in 2021. I always enjoy getting to sit down with Tom and experience his stories and his special insight into the creative process, a perspective that goes beyond music and applies to any artistic discipline. Tom Ashton is an original founder member and guitarist of legendary early 80's British darkwavers The March Violets. Based in Gothic central, Leeds, UK, the band released many tracks which went on to be rated as classics of their genre. He also guested in bands such as Sisters Of Mercy, The Danse Society and toured with Clan Of Xymox. In 1987 his music was featured in director John Hughes' coming of age drama, Some Kind Of Wonderful. A year later he co-wrote the score for Zelda Barron's teen thriller Forbidden Sun during his stint in London Records' band Hard Rain. After reforming in 2007, The March Violets released their first proper studio album in 2013, Made Glorious. The band also toured extensively in the US and Europe. In 2012 Tom returned to film scoring and has now completed 8 features with director Daniel E. Falicki and two shorts for director Ryan Lieske. In 2016 he founded SubVon Studio based in Athens, Georgia, and since then has recorded, mixed, and mastered many Georgia based darkwave bands including Vision Video, Tears For The Dying, Hip To Death, and Entertainment! On this episode of Spaceport Radio, we take a quick break between Travelers and discuss something that's been on my mind of late. There are many myths that keep people from getting started on, or sticking with, their creative business ideas. The three big ones that I have heard over the years, and that have kept me from starting much earlier in my life, are related to market saturation, perceived limited income potential, and the dismissal of ideas simply because they are not original or first to market. I talk with Mr. Haunt about these myths, using our highly subjective and personalized mechanisms to debunk them all, and to share our insight into why none of that matters now. We even discuss a bonus myth: moving to New York City as a necessary means to make it. Spoiler alert: It may actually just hurt your chances and make you miserable. On this episode of Spaceport Radio, Mr. Haunt and I take a moment to discuss the passing of Dustin Diamond, who was best known for portraying the character Screech in the Saved By The Bell franchise. I never considered the show or its characters to play a prominent part of my subconscious, but news of his death this week brought to mind the role he played on the show and in culture at large. Mr. Haunt and I both find ourselves considering the nerd culture we were a part of growing up, the eternal outsider whose interests were never "cool". I found comfort in Screech's presence on TV at a time when I, too, was going through high school, wholly unpopular and banished to the fringes. Screech will always be the lovable, endearing nerdy outsider, but an outsider nonetheless. On this episode of Spaceport Radio, I sit down with my friend Frank Jacobus. Frank and I met at Cooper Union in 1993 and have been close friends ever since. Our speculative ideas remain as vibrant and inspiring today as they were when we were teenagers. Today we talk about how our creative processes have changed over the years, and how Frank approaches teaching his students and his children about living a creative life. We also get into his thoughts on the evolution of creative professions, including what he tells his own kids (and doesn't tell them) about that fine balance between "making art" and "making a living". He gives insight into how space influences our mood, and how he has learned to trust his creative intuition when it comes to everything from architecture to poetry. And would Picasso be on Instagram? On this episode of Spaceport Radio, I talk with my friend Reed Reimer about his process for creating music, and how he approaches client requests for bespoke soundtracks. We talk about how he has learned to not take artistic criticism personally, while still using the music creation process as a way to process complex emotions. Reed Reimer is an award winning film composer and loves music and stories, whether it’s for film, video games, songs, or other media. He loves reading sci-fi and fantasy, so his tastes in music composition follow. What drives Reed to work harder and inspires him is working with other wonderful artists and creating new worlds. A great example of that is the recent project Codeburst, which was written with Mat Kaminski and long-time collaborator Benjamin Emory Larson. Having played guitar for almost 30 years, Reed received his music composition degree, and immediately began scoring films and other media. You can see some of his professional credits on IMDB, but you may have heard his music on various podcasts, commercials, or ad campaigns. He lives in Minnesota with his wife and twin girls, and if he isn’t writing music, creating stories, or developing life-long friendships with his project partners, he’s generally pretending to be some kind of creature for the kids to ride. We all seem to go through life flying around in our own little spaceships, our own bubbles. Sometimes we forget there's a whole galaxy out there. I've noticed firsthand how this can be a problem not only for the creative process, but for living life itself. The spaceport concept in science fiction is a special one to me because it's usually portrayed as a place where you might run into humans and other alien beings from so many disciplines and backgrounds. This cross section of the galaxy is so inspiring and liberating to me. I am passionate about learning from all these space travelers, and hopefully you will get something out of it, too.
