This week on The Metro, Rev. Jeff Ivins brings you the following bands for you listening enjoyment: Untouchables, Erasure, The Sisters Of Mercy, Split Enz, Peter Godwin, Duran Duran, After The Fire, Falco, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Madness, Klark Kent, Bangles, T’Pau, The Motels, and finishes up with Altered Images.
Paddy, Ian (sadly only for moments...), Martin, Sid and Tim reunite for our reverse chronological look at the Sister's albums to have a talk about their debut - the flawed but often amazing First & Last & Always. A tricky edit thisone as Ians feed stopped recording almost straight away, but we left him in to say hello at the start though unfortunately lost his insights this time around. So get your room lit in white foods from the back and fire up the smoke machines for a listen!
Cienna Silvia is the Program Manager for the EXODUS PROJECT, Solano Sister Eileen Enright is here to talk to Bob about the legacy of the Sisters Of Mercy

This week we're discussing every album by The Sisters of Mercy. Led by mastermind Andrew Eldritch, this band is paramount in the creation of goth music as we know it. Although they came a few years after pioneers like Siouxsie and the Banshees or The Cure, The Sisters of Mercy's style was so distinct and memorable that most of what we recognize as goth can be traced back to them. Even if goth isn't your thing, there's a lot to be had here.Closing track: “Temple of Love” from Some Girls Wander by Mistake (1992)Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexTom @tomosmansoundsHistory Tom's stuff:Music on Spotify, ApplePodcast on Spotify, YouTubeSubstackWebsiteMike's Picks:First and Last and Always (1985) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteVision Thing (1990) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Floodland (1987) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteVision Thing (1990) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…Some Girls Wander by Mistake (1992)First and Last and Always (1985)Floodland (1987)Vision Thing (1990)

This week: the 2nd in a newer series called “In The Shadow Of…”, where we compare obscure bands to a mainstream act. This is not about copycats or copybats, but more so about artists that have similar vibes to a band who has become synonymous with Gothtober; the one and only TYPE O NEGATIVE! Join us as we discover other bands who were influenced and inspired by TYPE O's gothic metal greatness. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This is not a statement about bands trying to copy one another, but more that they have a shared sound and vision. It's been said that there is no originality left in rock n' roll and also been stated that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. As always, we hope we turn you onto something new!Songs this week include:A Pale Horse Named Death – “Shallow Grave” from Lay My Soul To Waste (2013)Frown – “Last Summer Days” from Lunar Brightshine And Fiery Splendour (2003)Unto Others – “Double Negative” from Mana (2019)Marble Orchard – “Liar's Tongue” from Building Monuments To Misery (2023)Seventh Void – “Slow Decent” from Heaven Is Gone (2009)Orphans Of Dusk – “Spleen” from Spleen (2023)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

This week's show kicks off our annual celebration of Gothtober in a grand way! Your favorite fiends welcome local Atlanta goth legend Matt Spatial from Now After Nothing who provides us with some tunes that show a true appreciation of the grim and ghastly! That's right, everything turns grey as they once again explore the dark and ethereal world of Goth Rock…What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection, an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing.Songs this week include:Bauhaus – “Sanity Assassin” from Sanity Assassin - Single (1983)Astari Nite – “Tongue Tied Galore” from Resolution Of Happiness (2024)Switchblade Symphony – “Bad Trash” from Serpentine Gallery (1995)Curse Mackey – “Lacerations” from Immoral Emporium (2022)Al1ce – “Wide Awake” from The Thirteenth Hour (2018)Now After Nothing – “Fixation Fantasy” from Artificial Ambivalence (2024)If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=u

When word got out in 1982 that Wax Trax Records was looking for a house photographer, Bobby Talamine stepped up to answer the call. And he's never looked back. Still out there photographing and championing bands he loves, you can spot Bobby in the pit for just about any show in Chicago (large or small) looking to get the shot. On this episode we talk to Mr. Talamine about Gary Numan, sneaking a camera into Led Zeppelin, Skinny Puppy, Depeche Mode, Anton Corbijn, Roger Waters and David Gilmour, Peter Gabriel, Riot Fest with Corey Feldman, Peter Hook and New Order, Gene Ambo, JBTV, Pixel Grip, Sisters Of Mercy, Idles at Lollapalooza, and Gabe vs. Bez.
In episode #10 of the Stairway to Eleven podcast, the hosts discuss another three iconic albums: "Red" by King Crimson, "Floodland" by The Sisters of Mercy, and "Electric" by The Cult. The episode touches upon the progressive rock brilliance of King Crimson's "Red," the gothic and atmospheric elements of The Sisters of Mercy's "Floodland," and the electrifying rock sound of The Cult's "Electric."

Life is a funny thing, and you never know what it has in store for you. Dewsbury for example, used to play punk rock around Leeds in the late 90s/early 00s. We know where he's ended up, but one of his old mates from the Yorkshire music scene has followed a very different path. From Catalyst - the band that inspired his name - through the Sisters Of Mercy, Eureka Machines, Ugly Kid Joe (and many other projects) all the way to his Nameless Ghoul-hood in Ghost, Chris Catalyst has been a feature of the UK and international music scene for years. He's got a new album coming out in October, so joins Moose and Dews for a chat ahead of its release. For this time around Danny's album spotlight is on the Compilation album from Sisters Of Mercy "Some Girls Wander By Mistake". The gold certified album is a collection of all the early singles from the band during 1980- 1983. Some Girls Wander by Mistake, released on 27 April 1992 on their own label Merciful Release, distributed by East West/Warner Music UK.The album collected the complete and unedited studio recording work of the band from 1980 to 1983: their first six singles and EPs, "The Damage Done", "Body Electric", "Anaconda", Alice, The Reptile House, and the 12-inch edition of "Temple of Love". The 2017 release includes two alternate mixes of "Under the Gun": Metropolis mix and Jutland mix, originally released in 1993 on the 12-inch vinyl of "Under the Gun". Background- "Temple of Love" is the only song from the 1980–1983 time period that was published with an "extended version". The album does not contain the 7-inch version of the song, which is the same as the extended version but faded out halfway. Although "Temple of Love" was re-recorded in 1992 to promote the compilation album's release, the new version was not initially included on the album. "Temple of Love (1992)" featured Israeli vocalist Ofra Haza. The compilation includes cover versions of "1969", originally recorded by the Stooges, and "Gimme Shelter", originally recorded by the Rolling Stones, which appeared on the Alice and Temple of Love 12 inch EPs, respectively. The album title derived from the Leonard Cohen song "Teachers", from the 1967 album Songs of Leonard Cohen, which was a staple live cover for the band throughout its career. The full line is: "Some girls wander by mistake / Into the mess that scalpels make". Songs of Leonard Cohen also included the Cohen song "Sisters of Mercy", which provided the band's name.Complete setlist -CommentaryAliceFloorshowPhantom1969Temple Of Love (Extended Version)HeartlandGimme ShelterKiss The CarpetLightsValentineFixBurnKiss The Carpet (Reprise)The Damage DoneWatchHome Of The Hit-MenBody ElectricAdenochromeAnacondaRecorded live at the She Shack Studio on May 6th 2023 © Copyright Danny Diess

Mark "Wiff" Smith in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.companyofjustice.com The original line-up of Play Dead consisted of Rob Hickson (vocals), Pete Waddleton (bass guitar), Mark "Wiff" Smith (drums) and Re-Vox (guitar). In July 1981, Re-Vox was replaced by Steve Green. During their active years, Play Dead supported a number of acts, including the likes of Killing Joke, The Cult and The Sisters Of Mercy in the UK. They also appeared on Channel 4's music TV show, The Tube in late 1984. A string of singles were released (many through Stoke-based Clay Records) from late 1983, throughout 1984 and early 1985. Play Dead toured frequently around the UK and Europe and by 1985, felt they had enough material to be able to put out their first ever live album, Into The Fire, which was released in May of that year.
By the time they released The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, their second studio album, The Black Crowes were already a popular band. This album would continue their dominance, achieving a record four album rock number one hits, and debuted at the number 1 spot on the Billboard 200 album chart as well. The Black Crowes were originally an Atlanta band during a time when hair bands were on the way down and grunge was on its way up. Their Southern rock and blues rock style seemed to hit a sweet spot with fans. The name of the album is taken from the title of an 1835 shape note hymnal compiled by Baptist song leader William Walker.Brothers Chris and Rich Robinson were joined in the band by Johnny Colt on bass, Steve Gorman on drums, and newcomer Marc Ford on guitar who replaced Jeff Cease. Keyboardist Eddie Harsch was also added at this time and would later be named as a full band member. The Black Crowes have sold more than 30 million albums, and Melody Maker magazine calls them “The Most Rock 'n' Roll Rock 'n' Roll Band in the World.” Though only Chris and Rich Robinson remain from the original band, the Black Crowes continue to tour and record as of 2023.Lynch takes us on a journey down this blues rock album path. Sting MeThe opening track on the album was also the second commercial single released. It has a female vocal backing that hearkens back to southern gospel choirs. The lyrics are about a girl that keeps breaking the singer's heart, or it could also be about heroin use. The Black Crowes were vocal proponents of legalization for recreational drugs.Black Moon CreepingFuzzy guitar distortion and harmonica drive this deep cut. The lyrics are about people keeping secrets, and it has a little darker, funky edge. “What you got buried in your back yard? What secret do you sleep with when the black moon come?”RemedyThis is the big hit from the album, which reached number 48 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Billboard album rock tracks chart. It is about freedom, and was written in response to the war on drugs. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme song from the late night variety show “The Tonight Show” Johnny Carson would take a final bow this month on his iconic late night show, to be replaced by Jay Leno. STAFF PICKS:The Wild Life by Slaughter Rob leads off the staff picks with a hair metal anthem. This is from Slaughter's second album of the same name. The band gets its name from its founder and front man Mark Slaughter. The album debuted at number 8 on the Billboard 200 Album Charts. Slaughter had five studio albums and three live albums.Temple of Love by The Sisters of MercyWayne rocks out with a song re-released in 1992, and originally performed in 1983. The Sisters of Mercy are from the UK underground scene, and this is their biggest hit, though it did not do well in the States. The name of the group comes from a Leonard Cohen song. The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead by XTC British post punk band XTC dropped this song on their 12th studio album, Nonsuch. It went to number 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. XTC founter Andy Partridge was inspired to write this song after watching a carved jack o'-lantern that he had put on his fence post decay over time. The Crash Test Dummies would cover this song in 1994's comedy film “Dumb and Dumber.”Cats in the Cradle by Ugly Kid JoeLynch features a cover of a song originally done by Harry Chapin in 1974. The Ugly Kid Joe version made it to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is about a father who doesn't make time for his son as he grows up, and reaps what he sews when the son doesn't have time for the father as an adult. NOVELTYTRACK:Summer Song by Joe SatrianiGuitar virtuoso Joe Satriani had a huge hit with this instrumental from his "Extremist" album.

We're joined on the podcast this week by journalist Konstantina Buhalis, for a conversation emerging out of her recent article on the role of social media in shaping contemporary goth culture. While being a participant within our scenes, Buhalis is often writing for more mainstream readerships, and so we were keen to speak with her about the ins and outs of writing for broader publications, and trying to inform and educate neophytes about the particulars of goth. We're also addressing the staggering amount of live news to have come out in the past few days, as we look at the just announced tours from The Sisters Of Mercy, Ministry, and Skinny Puppy.
I discuss The Sisters Of Mercy's 1987 album Floodland.

Sister Barbara Giehl, a Sister of Mercy of the Americas, made her first vows in September 2022 and lives and ministers at the Mercy by the Sea Retreat and Conference Center in Connecticut. Sister Barbara grew up in Rochester, New York, where she encountered both the Sisters of St. Joseph of Rochester, and the Sisters of Mercy. She was taught by sisters during grade school, high school and nursing school, as well as working in the Sisters of Mercy motherhouse. Sister Barb was drawn to religious life in high school, where she began a pre-postulant program with the Sisters of Mercy. But once she began nursing school, she told her formation director she needed a break -- but would be back. Little did she know but that break would last over 40 years. She met, fell in love, and married her husband Jerry, and they had four children. Barb stayed connected to the Sisters of Mercy through the years and eventually became an associate of the Mercies. Five years after her husband passed away, the thoughts of religious life returned. Tony James is one of rock's great shapeshifters. He starts out with Billy Idol in Generation X, one of the great punk bands, but when Billy went solo, Tony took some time to conceptualize his next creative move. That gestation period eventually brought about Sigue Sigue Sputnik, one of the most outrageous groups of the 80s. Though they were short-lived, the band left a giant lipstick stain on the collar of pop music. Tony then downgraded to sideman when he joined up with "The" Sisters of Mercy for a spell. Then, because he can, he pairs up with his old London SS buddy Mick Jones and forms Carbon Silicon and gives most of the music away for free. It's been a wild ride and today Tony lives comfortably off his success and does whatever he wants. It's a crazy, hilarious story. www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
