In episode 24, Johnny talks to music supervisor Ron Payne. Ron started his Hollywood career as a Production Assistant for John Hughes in 1984.  He went on to be a set P.A. on Weird Science, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Pretty In Pink, and then a music supervisor / music co-ordinator on Some Kind Of Wonderful, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, She's Having A Baby, The Great Outdoors, Uncle Buck and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, and a post-production supervisor on Home Alone.  Johnny's talk with Ron covers the Marx Brothers, the Beatles, and John Ford, accidentally slipping a Monty Python quote into a John Hughes film, and they discuss whether you should ‘Yes' when Molly Ringwald wants to swap sunglasses with you seconds before she's due to do a take on Pretty In Pink.  This conversation was recorded online at the beginning of March 2024. Welcome to Tuesday! We obviously talked about yesterday's weather and discussed the Odysseus moon rover being tipped over on the moon, and a fantastic story about a treasure trove of unopened hockey cards! During our early sports report, we talked about the recent injuries to college basketball players due to court storming and what the NCAA might do about it. Let you know what's new on New Release Tuesday, and Brian went on a rant about putting sidewalks in the neighborhoods on the south side (he doesn't want it). Our good news this morning was a bus driver in North Carolina that saved the lives of 28 kids when her bus caught on fire. During a three-way with Shaw, we discussed the upcoming "surge pricing" changes coming to Wendy's, and got an update on Elijah Vue, the missing child in Wisconsin. Shared the news that Ole Anderson, an original member of the Four Horsemen, passed away at age 81, and  also asked the question, "Do you have an old person name"? after a mom recently went viral after her daughter told her that she had an old person name. While running down a list of birthdays & dates in pop culture history, we found out that a UWL alum was in the movie "Some Kind Of Wonderful". During the Friggin' Sports, we talked about a professional bowler that was arrested mid-game on charges of child pornography. "Bad News with Happy Music" this morning consisted of stories about a handcuffed prisoner that managed to get away from the cops, a couple in Kentucky that got married in a convenience store bathroom, a guy who lost a winning Powerball ticket, a moron in India that jumped into a lion's den and got mauled to death, a Vegas dude who got popped for DUI and peed on an officer's leg, a wedding guest that fought basically the entire wedding party, and a singer in a metal band that was giving estrogen to another member of the band in an attempt to steal the guy's fiance.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Life Moves Pretty Fast - The Music and Movies of John Hughes

In the final episode of Life Moves Pretty Fast, Hadley Freeman and Tarquin Gotch uncover the story of 1987's high school drama "Some Kind Of Wonderful". Like "Pretty In Pink", the film was written by John Hughes and directed by Howard Deutch, and in some ways acts as a correction to "Pretty In Pink" supplying the ending Hughes and Deutch wanted with "Pretty In Pink" but were denied by test audiences and studio tinkering. Much like many John Hughes films, it had a soundtrack dominated by UK indie music from the likes of The Jesus And Mary Chain,  Propaganda and Flesh For Lulu. Life Moves Pretty Fast is produced by Ian Callaghan for Gimme Sugar Productions and Serious Comedy.

On this episode of Spaceport Radio, Reed and I catch up with my friend Tom Ashton about life as a guitarist for eminent post-punk band The March Violets. his long career as a composer for films. what it was like living in the 'goth ground zero' of Leeds in the 80s, producing albums in his Athens, Georgia studio, and what bands he has an eye on in 2021. I always enjoy getting to sit down with Tom and experience his stories and his special insight into the creative process, a perspective that goes beyond music and applies to any artistic discipline. Tom Ashton is an original founder member and guitarist of legendary early 80's British darkwavers The March Violets. Based in Gothic central, Leeds, UK, the band released many tracks which went on to be rated as classics of their genre. He also guested in bands such as Sisters Of Mercy, The Danse Society and toured with Clan Of Xymox. In 1987 his music was featured in director John Hughes' coming of age drama, Some Kind Of Wonderful. A year later he co-wrote the score for Zelda Barron's teen thriller Forbidden Sun during his stint in London Records' band Hard Rain. After reforming in 2007, The March Violets released their first proper studio album in 2013, Made Glorious. The band also toured extensively in the US and Europe. In 2012 Tom returned to film scoring and has now completed 8 features with director Daniel E. Falicki and two shorts for director Ryan Lieske. "I'm Your Captain (Closer To Home)" celebrates 50 years Mark Farner is a rock and roll American icon. As one of the founding members, lead singer, lead guitarist, and wrote ninety percent of the Grand Funk Railroad (GFR) music catalog, Farner has always been known as the energetic driving force on stage, the engine that pulled the original Grand Funk Railroad to the top of the charts. From his soulful voice and power rock riffs, to fueling the Funk with his atomic stage presence. His story and his imprint on music starts with Flint, MI and since 1969 from his humble beginnings and a blue-collar outlook, Farner has captained a global crusade for love and freedom. This June marked the 50th anniversary of GFR's "I'm Your Captain (Closer To Home)," a song that sits alongside massive hits such as, "Some Kind Of Wonderful," "Foot Stompin' Music," "Heartbreaker," "Locomotion," "We're An American Band," and others. Farner talks to Buddy Iahn and Matt Bailey about the impact of "I'm Your Captain," his legacy, and Mark Farner's American Band, the banner he's now touring as. He also gives us his strong opinions on a Grand Funk reunion. Check out our other Podcasts! Subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify Podcasts, TuneIn and YouTube.

He also let us sing backup with him. He's likely regretting that decision. For more information on John, check out his website. Inspired by the throwback teen romance of The Spectacular Now and the Summer of ’93 period comedy The To Do List, we begin the inaugural episode of our biweekly podcast with a discussion on how nostalgia enhances (or maybe distorts) our perceptions of a movie. In the second segment, Tasha Robinson’s two-star review of the majestic Patrick Swayze vehicle Road House has us wondering about the “guilty pleasure,” and whether movies we enjoy can also be called bad movies. We also play a game called “Double Vision,” where participants are given two very similar movies—in this case, Pretty In Pink and Some Kind Of Wonderful—and asked to tell which detail came from which movie. And finally, Tasha and Nathan Rabin have “30 Seconds To Sell” their movie recommendations.

Back to the beer. Michael from #PDXBeerGeeks came on today's show to talk about beer, beer culture, beer festivals, beer, as well as beer. We also dealt with the Rolling Stones raping their fans, Hillsboro gets a new baseball team that sounds kind of beery, Bridge School gets shitty with Guns & Axl, American Horror Story and Walking Dead kill it on tv, we review Some Kind Of Wonderful, and we drink A LOT of good beer this week. A huge thanks to Mainbrew for their ongoing support. Be sure to listen next week and Douglas from Mainbrew comes back to talk about some more beer!
