Jimi Hendrix is widely regarded as the best guitarist of all time, not least by our very own Chula. With unparalleled technical mastery, showmanship and innovation, Hendrix seemed to be one with his instrument. Over the course of his upsettingly brief career, he redefined the musical landscape of his time, and cemented himself as a cultural legend of the late 60's and early 70's.Yet behind the myth was a shy young man, whose early years were difficult, unsettled, and marked with emotional and physical neglect. He found music as an escape from his chaotic upbringing; but struggled with the immense fame and fortune that came along with it. In the final episode of the season, Chula goes beyond the myth of Jimi Hendrix and explores the public triumphs and private pains of his ultimate guitar hero. Drawing on his work as a psychotherapist, he discusses how Hendrix's unstable childhood, particularly as a child of alcoholic (ACA), might have contributed to his ability to experience and cope with fame and success in adulthood. This week's ‘ One For The Road' is ‘Electric Ladyland' - the third and final studio album by the Jimi Hendrix Experience - which Chula believes “everyone should listen to once before they die”. Today, the name “Sid Vicious” is practically synonymous with punk, nihilism and self-destruction. But before Sid, there was a young boy named Simon John Ritchie whose peripatetic childhood was marked by neglect, instability and drugs. As bassist of the Sex Pistols, Sid's rise to fame was driven not by musical talent but by his anarchic persona and darkly violent streak - “a living circus” as his fellow band member once described him. He was celebrated for his worst and pushed into the spotlight with little to no duty of care, eventually dying of an overdose at only 21 years old.In this episode, Matt takes us on the complex and shockingly short journey of Sid Vicious - or rather, Simon John Ritchie. Drawing on his experience as a mental health professional, Matt offers a more compassionate perspective on the infamous punk icon, revealing a sad but all too familiar tale of exploitation and spectacle at the expense of vulnerable individuals.Today's ‘One For The Road' is the Youtuber Mary Spender. Few artists embody the term “iconoclast” more than Sinead O'Connor. A voice of rebellion, she spoke truth to power and stood for what she believed in, regardless of personal and professional cost.As a survivor of unspeakable trauma herself, Sinead denounced child abuse in the catholic church on live television years before the world was ready to hear it. And though this infamous act saw her blacklisted from TV networks and venues, she maintained that it put her career “back on the right track”. She was, and always would be, a protest singer - never a pop star.A new Sinead-devotee, Sam returns to tell us the story of the fearless feminist icon with compassion and admiration. Together with Matt and Chula, she reflects on how the media portrayal of Sinead O'Connor had insidiously fed her own pre-conceptions and unconscious biases. This week's ‘One For The Road' is the seminal feminist book ‘Women Who Run With The Wolves: Contacting the Power of the Wild Woman' by Clarissa Pinkola Estes. Prince was perhaps one of the most accomplished, innovative and prolific artists of the last century. Through his seemingly limitless talent and electrifying performances, he transcended every genre and pushed every norm. With a catalogue of 40 studio albums, multiple film scores, not to mention a wealth of unreleased material, Prince's musical legacy is staggering. But his story is also one of inescapable contradictions. Offstage, he was softly-spoken and private - a stark contrast to the flamboyant, over-the-top artist audiences witnessed on stage. Though known for his unabashed sexuality and explicit lyrics, he espoused strict religious beliefs and even enforced a swear jar to discourage profanities around him. And despite his lifelong public shunning of any drugs or alcohol, Prince tragically passed away from an accidental fentanyl overdose in 2016 - leaving the world in disbelief.Sam Parker - CEO and Co-Founder of Attune - returns for the first time this season to tell the story of Prince Rogers Nelson, a complex genius on a relentless search for perfection. With an empathetic approach shaped by her experience as a mental health practitioner, coach and former artist manager, she explores the man behind the purple icon - and the forces that may have contributed to his shocking and devastating death. This week's ‘One for the Road' as chosen by Sam comes from The Artist himself. ‘The Beautiful Ones' is Prince's sadly unfinished autobiography - an intimate and illuminating memoir full of previously unseen photos and handwritten notes. We are kicking off Empathy For The Devil Season 2 with perhaps our most requested artist - Amy Winehouse. A once-in-a-generation talent, Amy burst onto the scene in the mid-2000's with an inimitable soulful voice and deeply emotive lyrics. She shone brightly then flamed out right in front of our eyes, receiving an appalling lack of empathy as she became consumed by her addictions. Her story is a tragic tale of a would-be jazz club singer who found herself thrust into the machine industry, coming of age under the weight of fame and in the unforgiving public eye. Matt Thomas - Creative Lead and Co-Founder of Attune - guides us through the first episode of the season, and examines the harsh criticism and cruel mockery (often laced with thinly veiled misogyny) which Amy endured right when she needed help the most. Taking a kind and compassionate approach, he unpacks the modern tragedy of a unique talent taken far too soon, remembering just how fortunate we were to hear that extraordinary voice. This week's ‘One For The Road' is the podcast ‘A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs', written and presented by Andrew Hickey. It's a brilliantly researched, eye-opening look at the history of rock from the swing era to the end of the millennium. I've been wanting to revisit the legacy of the great African American soprano Gloria Davy (born in Brooklyn on 29 March 1931 and died in Genève on 28 November 2012) for some time now. In the first year of the podcast, I devoted one of my very first Black History Month episodes to exploring her career, recordings, and legacy. At that time, however, I had not yet acquired a commercial recording central to her recorded output: a 1957 LP on London Records entitled, simply, Concert Recital, which featured the soprano, accompanied by Giorgio Favaretto, in a varied program of Purcell and Brahms songs, followed by two important twentieth century song cycles, Poulenc's 1939 cycle Fiançailles pour rire, set to poems by his close friend Louise de Vilmorin, and Joaquín Turina's 1918 cycle, Poema en forma de canciones. A few years after posting that episode, I finally got my hands on this ultra-rare recording, which I am thrilled to present here. Recordings of either or both of those song cycles in particular were rare at the time this recording was made, and recordings of the complete Turina cycle remain so. On this record I supplement this record with her first London/Decca release from the year 1956, entitled simply Gloria Davy Spirituals. I have already played these recordings on the podcast, but they are always worth rehearing, especially because the spirituals, many of them quite off-the-beaten-path, are arranged and conducted by African American composer Julia Perry, who has only recently, particularly in the year of her centennial, been gaining the public exposure that she so richly deserves. In between I include additional examples of Gloria Davy in song, including excerpts from an early-career performance of Poulenc's Caligrammes, his final cycle of poems by Guillaume Apollinaire, as well as an obscure but rousingly rendered song by the Italian composer, conductor, pianist, and teacher Vittorio Maria Vanzo. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. In Episode #176 of The XS Noize Podcast, host Mark Millar speaks to Neil Arthur from Blancmange about the career-spanning compilation Everything is Connected (The Best of Blancmange 1979-2024). Blancmange's story is one of two distinct chapters. In the early ‘80s, they infused the emergent synth-pop scene with oblique lyrics, wry British humour and occasionally tabla-tinged sonics, an unlikely mix which saw them soar into the Top 10 with singles such as Living On The Ceiling, Blind Vision and Don't Tell Me. And since 2011's Blanc Burn album, they've taken that singular style into a new century and somehow become more prolific than ever. Now Blancmange brings all – well, 38 to be precise – of these highlights together with the career-spanning collection Everything Is Connected, released on London Records on 11th May 2024. In this interview, Neil Arthur discusses the career-spanning collection Everything Is Connected, his love for Abba getting stopped by the police on his way to Top of the Pops and lots more. "Grateful Dead's Night Amidst Ann Arbor's Championship Riot: A 1989 Michigan Celebration"Larry Mishkin reflects on his experience in 2024, discussing the success of the Michigan Wolverines in football and their celebration. He reminisces about the Michigan men's basketball team's 1989 championship and the Grateful Dead's subsequent concerts in Ann Arbor. The podcast features excerpts from the Grateful Dead's performances and shares anecdotes, including a story about Jerry Garcia and Bobby Weir getting stuck in an Ann Arbor celebration after a national championship win, highlighting the connection between the Grateful Dead and Michigan celebrations. The episode also pays tribute to a late friend and celebrates the recent success of the University of Michigan..Produced by PodConx Larry's Notes:Ann Arbor timeline for the first week of April, 1989:April 1, 1989 – Hash BashApril 3, 1989 – Michigan beats Seton Hall in Seattle to win NCAA Men's Division I Basketball TournamentApril 5, 1989 – Grateful Dead play in Crisler Arena, home of the champion basketball team (first show in Ann Arbor since 1979)April 6, 1989 – Grateful Dead play in Crisler Arena When Michigan won the football national championship last week by beating Washington in Houston, made me think there is a history here – M wins a Natty and we play/go see live the Grateful Dead. Holly and the Crickets recorded the song in Clovis, New Mexico, on May 27, 1957, the same day the song "Everyday" was recorded.[1] The rhythmic pattern of "Not Fade Away" is a variant of the Bo Diddley beat, with the second stress occurring on the second rather than third beat of the first measure, which was an update of the "hambone" rhythm, or patted juba from West Africa. Jerry Allison, the drummer for the Crickets, pounded out the beat on a cardboard box.[3] Allison, Holly's best friend, wrote some of the lyrics, though his name never appeared in the songwriting credits. Joe Mauldin played the double bass on this recording. It is likely that the backing vocalists were Holly, Allison, and Niki Sullivan, but this is not known for certain.[1]"Not Fade Away" was originally released as the B-side of the hit single "Oh, Boy!" and was included on the album The "Chirping" Crickets (1957). The Crickets' recording never charted as a single. In 2004, this song was ranked number 107 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time"Covered by: Rolling Stones (1964, their first big hit) The Rolling Stones' version of "Not Fade Away" was one of their first hits. Recorded in January 1964 and released by Decca Records on February 21, 1964, with "Little by Little" as the B-side, it was their first Top 10 hit in the United Kingdom, reaching number three.[5]London Records released the song in the US on March 6, 1964, as the band's first single there, with "I Wanna Be Your Man" as the B-side.[6] The single reached number 48 on the U.S. BillboardHot 100 singles chart. New-Old Recordings Making it into the Archive. Playlist Symphonic Electronic Rock Symphonic electronic is always a favorite of listeners of the podcast. I note these additions, including a scarce soundtrack recording of interest. Jeff Bruner, “Try To Escape,” “Night Saucer,” “Larry And Diane Go To Hell,” “On The Beach,” “The Investigator,” “Vic's Flashback,” “End” from (side 2) from Foes (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (1977 Not on Label). This interesting soundtrack combined electronic music with orchestral sounds for this little seen motion picture. Recorded and mixed at Santa Barbara Sound. Music composed and conducted by Jeff Bruner; electronic music production, Doug Scott; electronic music realized by Jeff Bruner and Doug Scott. I picked this up on a trip to Boston According to Jeff Bruner himself, this record was pressed for the movie staff only and there are less than 20 copies. “The music on this record is a perfect balance of rational sounds that you've heard before and even more rational sounds which because you've never heard them before seem quite irrational. 19:36 Claude Denjean, “Memories Of Moody Blues” from Moods (1976 London Records). A few years after the initial wave of albums produced using the Moog Modular synthesizer, Denjean returned to the instrument to make this collection of classic pop tunes in an electronic symphonic vein. This song seems to touch on every other note of the classic “Nights in White Satin” without actually causing any copyright issues, I imagine. This album is a new copy added to the archive. How could I resist? 4:09 Hugo Montenegro, “MacArthur Park (Allegro Part III)” from Moog Power (1969 RCA Victor). A rockin' album of symphonic pop tunes from the heyday of Moog Modular recordings. Montenegro had the magic touch for arranging such pop songs. He was aided by Moog programming by none other than Paul Beaver and playing by Mike Melvoin. This is an old copy from my collection that I unsealed just for this podcast. Only this one track has been played on this album. 3:21 Raymond Lefèvre Et Son Grand Orchestre, “Mille Colombes” from Love In Stereo Nº 1 (1978 Barclay). This German release of French album is one of many by keyboard player and arranger Lefèvre. This one features a variety of electronic music instruments used in conjunction with an orchestra. Bass, Dave Markee; Drums, Barry Morgan; Keyboards, Alan Hawkshaw; Percussion, Ray Cooper; Synthesizer players, Guy Boyer, Maurice Vander, Raymond Lefèvre. Synthesizers used: RMI Computer, Moog 3 P, Arp DGX, Omni Polyphonic, Korg 1000, Korg 2000, Ems/Arp Sequencer. Rhythm section recorded at Lansdowne Recording Studios, London. Strings recorded at Barclay Hoche, Paris. Synthesizers recorded at Studio Damiens. 3:10 Early Electronic Music Several recordings featuring vintage tape compositions and performances using the Moog Modular synthesizer were among our newest arrivals to the archive. Ralph Lundsten. “Snowstorm” (1967/68) from Shangri-La (1975 His Master's Voice). Swedish release of composer Lundsten music for Shangri-La, a commissioned work for Swedish Radio. However, the album also presents several early tape works, including Winter Music, a suite of works for the season of this which this one is a part. “Suddenly, a sleigh with lit-up torches emerges out of the whirling snowstorm. … Was it for real or just a dream?” 2:30 Jean Jacques Perrey, “The Alien Planet” from Musique Electronique Du Cosmos (Electronic Music From Outer Space) (1962 MusiCues). An earlier disc of Perrey, later known as the wizard of electronic pop sounds. He was using the Ondioline for this track, an early monophonic organ, and tape manipulation to provide effects. This was a recording of broadcast library sounds. 1:02 Jean Jacques Perrey, “Space Light” from Musique Electronique Du Cosmos (Electronic Music From Outer Space) (1962 MusiCues). Another early track from Perrey. 1:03 Jean Jacques Perrey, “Intercestial Tabulator” from Musique Electronique Du Cosmos (Electronic Music From Outer Space) (1962 MusiCues). Another early tape compositionfrom Perrey that might be his imagining what a future computer would sound like. 1:03 Jean Jacques Perrey, “Barnyard in Orbit” from Musique Electronique Du Cosmos (Electronic Music From Outer Space) (1962 MusiCues). Another early track from Perrey that shows his innate sense of humor that we would hear much more of in his music yet to come. 2:17 Jean Jacques Perrey, “Micro Cosmic PL 1” from Musique Electronique A Caractere Special Pour Illustrations Sonores Et Effets Speciaux (2017 Wah Wah Records). Spanish release of an original acetate disc of Perrey demonstration tracks and original compositions. I think these were made around 1967 after Perrey had begun using the Moog Modular synthesizer. 5:19 Doug McKechnie, “The First Exploration @ SF Radical Laboratories, 1968” (2020 VG+ Records). Recently released recordings of an original tapes made in 1968 from an early Moog composer and performer. McKechnie famously played a live Moog Modular set at the Altamont performance in 1969 by the Rolling Stones. He is ever-so briefly heard and seen the film Gimme Shelter (1970). In any event, McKechnie was a pioneer who used an instrument owned by one Bruce Hatch (not Bruce Haack). He worked with the instrument for about four years before Hatch sold it to Tangerine Dream around 1972. With that came the end of one musician's dreams and the beginning of someone else's. I am so happy that Doug was able to release this recording of his early work because so many of us have been curious to hear it. This track represents some clever droning with the sequencer and one can imagine this being performed in real-time. 8:30 Hydroelectric Streetcar, “I Realize” from The Cool-Aid Benefit Album Vol. 1 (1970 Arthfor Special Products). I was searching for this Canadian benefit disc for a long time so that I could add it to my collection of Moog Modular Synthesizer recordings. The Moog in this case was owned by my acquaintance Johns Mills Cockell who played in several rock bands and avant garde performance groups during this time. Remember Intersystems? In this case, he was playing as a sideman for Hydro Electric Streetcar, a folk-rock band to which he added synthesis. Bass, Vocals, Lee Stephens; Drums, Stan Tait; Guitar, Al Wiebe; Lead Vocals, Danny McInnes; Moog Modular Synthesizer, John Mills-Cockell. 3:48 Robots A few tracks in this batch of new arrivals worked around the theme of robots, machines, and synthesized voices. Skanfrom, “Mr. Robot Is Dead” from Split 12" (2000 A.D.S.R.). Now defunct electro synthpop label from Germany run by Skanfrom. Limited to 800 hand numbered copies. Mine is number 676. Skanfrom is Roger Semsroth. 3:25 I., “Gro Stadtleben” from Split 12" (2000 A.D.S.R.). Now defunct electro synthpop label from Germany run by Skanfrom. Limited to 800 hand numbered copies. Mine is number 676. B.I. (Bakterielle Infektion) was founded in Berlin in 1995, disbanded 2011. 2:34 Dee D. Jackson, “Automatic Lover” from Automatic Lover (1978 Jupiter Records). German release, 7” 45 RPM. Dee D. Jackson (Deirdre Elaine Cozier) is an English singer-songwriter, She was primarily a space disco/Italo disco concept artist, moving to Italy in the mid-1980s. The computer voice in this tune sounds like a person speaking monotone with some filtering. No artificial intelligence involved here. 3:54 Ralph Lundsten. “Robbie is Dancing the Waltz” (1975) from Shangri-La (1975 His Master's Voice). Swedish release of composer Lundsten music for Shangri-La, a commissioned work for Swedish Radio. It also includes his Heaven by Night suite from which this song comes. The robotic voice appears to be one that is amplitude modulated to provide a wavering tremolo effect. No vocoder here. 4:06 Odds and Ends Recordings that are becoming part of the archive as representative examples of the odd and curious in electronic sounds. The Marvelletes, “I Want a Guy” (1961 Tamla). Single featuring a Musitron played by Raynoma Liles Gordy (producer, arranger, musician and ex-wife of Motown executive Barry Gordy); Lead vocals by Wanda Young Rogers; background vocals by Gladys Horton, Georgeanna Tillman, Wyanetta "Juanita" Cowart, and Katherine Anderson; Other instrumentation by the Funk Brothers included Bass by James Jamerson, Drums by Benny Benjamin, Guitar by Eddie Willis, Piano by Marvin Gaye,Tenor saxophone by Hank Cosby, Baritone saxophone by Andrew "Mike" Terry. The Musitron was a modified, monophonic electric organ invented by Max Crook and featured on such well-known songs as Del Shannon's “Hats Off to Larry” and “Runaway.” Crook was the keyboard player in Del Shannon's band and they made that sound a key novelty in Shannon's songs beginning in 1961, the same year as “I Want a Guy.” 2:38 Living Shakespeare, “King Lear” excerpt from King Lear (1962 Living Shakespeare Inc.). US compilation release of various excerpts from the Living Shakespeare series. This was a series of recordings of the plays of William Shakespeare, adapted for recording and made in England. This series was available in various combinations of discs and usually featured some sort of incidental electronic music produced by a BBC Radiophonic-associated composer. I have a complete set of discs as packaged for the US market. But I came across this sampler disc and thought to include an example of the scene from King Lear where the King (as acted by Donald Wolfit) “calls down the rage of heaven in a violent thunderstorm,” with the storm sounds all being electronic. Text adapted by Fiona Bentley, Morys Aberdare; Directed by Sir Donald Wolfit; Musique Concrete and sound patterns composed by Desmond Leslie. 2:24 K-Tel, “Hit, Flop, Break Even” from K-Tel Super Star Chance-a-Tune (1973 K-Tel). 7” 45-rpm single. A triple-grooved record. (also known as 'Parallel', 'Mystery', or 'Trick-Track' record). Originally packaged as part of the board game "K-Tel Superstar Game.” The same tracks are pressed on both sides. “Players are rock stars” and collected gold records to win. Rolled the dice to move through the board. Squares had events for players to collect or lose money or release an album, which were subject to being a Hit, Flop, or Break-even by playing the disc. The game came with this Chance-A-Tune 45 RPM record which was played when a player landed on an album release square. The player drops the needle to see which of the tracks, and verdicts, comes up. The single only includes the three phrases I've edited here for the podcast. In reality, you could never tell which track would play with each drop of the needle. 0:29 Adams & Fleisner, “Surrounded In Mystery And Magic (Sounds Of The Inside)” from Space Effects Vol. 2 (1988 BCM). German recording of sound effects. I chose this one primarily because at 1:25 it was by far the longest track on this broadcast library record. 1:54 Yuri Rasovsky, “Interplanetary Adventurer” from The Chicago Language Tape And Other Aberations of El Fiendo In Glorious Mono (1979 Not on Label). A curious comedy record led by Yuri Rasovsky that consists primarily of sketches that are acted out and produced as would be a radio program. There is one piece of electronic music that might interest you: Hans Wurman, venerable Moog synthesist, contributed the opening music to this story that features the Moog Modular. I suspect that this was the last recorded Moog piece that Hans produced before laying down his golden patch cords. Musician, music by Hans Wurman; Voice Actor, Dick Simpson, Don Vogel, Gary Gears, Joan Lazzerini, John Hultman, Keneth Northcott, Mell Zellman, Michelle M. Faith, Yuri Rasovsky. I chose to reproduced only this musical segment, surrounded by some of the spoken parts for context. 1:46. Originals A few recordings are just unnecessarily difficult to categorize. Joakim, “Teenage Kiss (Dub)” from Transe / Teenage Kiss (2005 Kitsune). French, 12” maxi-single. Danceable, yet strange. Written by, Performed, and produced by Joakim Bouaziz. 4:58 Landscape, “From The Tea-Rooms Of Mars .... To The Hell-Holes Of Uranus” from From The Tea-Rooms Of Mars .... To The Hell-Holes Of Uranus (1981 RCA). English electro/pop/jazz band from London. This is the title track and features some electronic tunes in the dance styles of the beguine, mambo, and tango. Which seemed to go with the other dance related tracks I found in this batch of new-old records. Electronic trombone, Trombone, Vocals, Peter Thoms; Vocals, Keyboards, Grand Piano, Fender Rhodes, Christopher Heaton; Vocals, Programmed By, Electronic Drums, Electronic Percussion, Synthesizer, Drums, Richard James Burgess; Bass Guitar, Synthesizer Bass, Vocals, Andy Pask. 7:53 Ralph Lundsten. “Cosma Nova” (1975) from Shangri-La (1975 His Master's Voice). Another track from Mr. Lundsten, commissioned for Swedish Radio. From the Heaven by Night suite, this is a dreamy dance tune. 3:18 Allen Ravenstine, “Going Upriver,” “110 In The Underpass,” and “5@28” from Electron Music / Shore Leave (2020 Waveshaper). This recent Canadian release is a collection of Ravenstine”s work for electronic and instrumental media. Ravenstine was the electronics and synthesizer player in the original lineup of Pere Ubu. He has continued to make eclectic, highly original and thoughtful music over the years. 16:11 Don Voegeli, “A Piece Of Bubble Gum” from Instant Production Music/Volume 18: Fine (1980 University Of Wisconsin-Extension). This was the final disc Voegeli made in the Electrosonic Studio for NPR, saying, “Fine . . . used as the title for this record to signal another termination, the end of the CPB and NPR funded project which over the years has brought you a total of twenty-six records of special production music.” Intended for private use by and for public (non-commercial) radio and TV facilities, this was one of the many broadcast library records that Voegeli created in a well-equipped electronic music studio that included a Moog Modular III. 1:07 Don Voegeli, “Follow the Leader” from Instant Production Music/Volume 18: Fine (1980 University Of Wisconsin-Extension). Produced by the Electrosonic Studio. 1:52 Opening background music: Barton McLean, “Dimensions I For Single Instrument And Tape” (excerpt) from American Society Of University Composers (1979 Advance Recordings). We've all come to love and appreciate in the tradition of great country music. This singer, songwriter, likened to Vince Gill for his tenor appeal, has made a great impact on the country music scene with his incredible talent, dynamic personality, and hypnotic voice. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Carl Ray highlighted the major stage as a young person while opening the stage for The Spinners, BB King, Teddy Pendergrass, and Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes. He was soon discovered by Reggae International Artist, Johnny Nash. It was Ray's relationship with Nash that led this young prodigy and developed his love for country music. Carl Ray eventually penned songs for Nash on Epic and London Records. Today, we are here to celebrate Christmas with Carl Ray's new single, Mary's Very First Christmas and to highlight Carl Ray's Black Country Music Radio Playlist.

On this episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Plouffe are joined by Adam Sondergard to talk about his pick, Sleep's Dopesmoker. Their third record, Dopesmoker was recorded in 1996 and was supposed to be their major label debut, but it all went wrong. When the band presented this as their album, London Records balked at releasing an album that was a single long song. It went unreleased until 1999, when Earache Records released it as Jerusalem in a slightly different configuration. This version of the album was released in 2003 by TeePee Records, and the exact version Adam brought was released in 2012 by Southern Lords Records. An extremely heavy doom metal/stoner metal album, Dopesmoker is around an hour at its shortest and 75 minutes at its longest, all in a single song. Will the boys drop out of life with song in hand, or will the Weedians proceed to hate on the album? Come along and find out!
I'm so tall, I'm so tall. This episode is all about the comeback and consistency. It's incredible to think that since they reactivated, Neil Arthur has recorded 10 albums as Blancmange in just over a decade. Beginning as a duo (with Stephan Luscombe) at the dawn of the eighties, their lo-fi experiment electronic pop inspired Mute Records' Daniel Miller to call them “The Maiden Aunts of Techno”. Those timeless mega anthems, synonymous with that era like Living On The Ceiling followed, before they called it a day. Then, all of a sudden, 11 years ago, the project materialised again. Paul caught up with Neil, a true eighties survivor on something of a creative roll now.Blancmange's new album Private Life is available on London Records. This episode is sponsored by Audio-TechnicaPaul's debut book, Coming To Berlin: Global Journeys Into An Electronic Music And Club Culture Capital is out now on Velocity Press. Episode 70 The Sonic Origins of Electronic Dance Music Trying to understand the evolution and history of electronic dance music (EDM) is a daunting task. We'll explore some of the sonic roots to see how we got to EDM—a beat-driven music powered by electronics and often focused on creating a trancelike musical state. Playlist Jesse Saunders, “On And On” from On and On (1984 Jes Say Records). Possibly the first DJ-created album created as a commercial public release. Produced, Performed, Arranged By Jesse Saunders; written by Jesse Saunders, Vince Lawrence. 8:02 Armin Van Buuren, “Sail” from Sail (2006 Armind). This 12” original mix was written by and produced by Armin van Buuren. 7:29 Amelie Lens, “Linger On” from Let it Go (2016 Second State). EDM performer and producer from Antwerp, Belgium. 7:41 Timmy Thomas, “Why Can't We Live Together,” from Why Can't We Live Together (1972 Glades). Timmy Thomas, Hammond organ and drum machine. Note the rapid-fire drum sequences sprinkled in here and there, a premonition around the future sound of drum machines. 4:38 Kraftwerk, “Uranium” from Radioactivity (1975 Kling-Klang). Not so much a danceable turn, but the choir sample was later repurposed by New Order in Blue Monday, so a worthy acknowledgement to Kraftwerk. 1:26 Kraftwerk, “Transistor” from Radioactivity (1975 Kling-Klang). Electronic percussion, Karl Bartos, Wolfgang Flür; Voice, Electronics, Florian Schneider, Ralf Hütter. 3:43 Kraftwerk, “Europe Endless” from Trans Europe Express (1977 Kling-Klang). Electronic Drums, Karl Bartos, Wolfgang Flur; Electronics, Voice, Florian Schneider, Ralf Hutter. 9:38 Biddu Orchestra, “Bionic Boogie” from Bionic Boogie (1976 Epic). A 45 RPM single from the disco era, featuring some electronics in the form of synthesizers. Biddu was an Indian-British music producer, composer, songwriter and singer. This was a departure for the Biddu Orchestra, which was normally engaged in full disco orchestrations, not the sonic textures of synthesizers, which are heard here, if somewhat overlayed by the other instruments. 2:59 Donna Summer, “I Feel Love” from I Remember Yesterday (1977 Casablanca). Written and sung by Donna Summer; produced by and Moog Synthesizer, Giorgio Moroder; Moog Synthesizer, Robby Wedel; Moog Bass, Thor Baldursson; Drums, Percussion, Keith Forsey; Bass, Les Hurdle.5:52 Space, “Save Your Love For Me” from Just Blue (1978 Vogue). Space was a French group, created around Didier Marouani (aka Ecama) and Roland Romanelli, acclaimed for their 1977 UK disco hit "Magic Fly." 5:45 Space, “Final Signal” from Just Blue (1978 Vogue). Space was a French group, created around Didier Marouani (aka Ecama) and Roland Romanelli. 4:21 Yellow Magic Orchestra, “Computer Game (Theme From The Invader)” from Yellow Magic Orchestra (1978 Horizon). Japanese techno band, parallel to later Kraftwerk. Drums, Percussion, Other Electronics, Vocals – Yukihiro Takahashi; Keyboards, Other [Electronics], Percussion, orchestrated by Ryuichi Sakamoto; Produced by Harry Hosono; Micro Composer programmer, Hideki Matsutake. 4:28 Mandré, “M3000 (Opus VI)” from M3000 (1979 Motown). Produced and Arranged By Andre Lewis. Lewis was a keyboardist who went on to collaborate with many artists, not the least of which for Frank Zappa for whom he played keyboards for The Mothers of Invention after the departure of George Duke. 5:43 New Order, “Blue Monday” from Blue Monday/The Beach (1983, Factory). This was a 12-inch 45 RPM single of the song which became a top seller. New Order was firmly entrenched in the synth-pop dance/crossover genre at that time and this song with its funky samples, mechanical progression and even references to Kraftwerk (the vocal choir heard is indeed a sample from Kraftwerk's “Uranium” released in 1975 effectively put a few more bricks in the bridge to electronic dance music. 7:27 Michel Huygen, “Take Now Music (Extended Instrumental Version)” from Capturing Holograms (1984 jive Electro). Recorded early 1984 in Barcelona (Spain). Composed, performed, produced, and programmed by Belgian born synthesist Michel Huygen, a member of the Spanish group Neuronium in 1976. 5:34 Kraftwerk, “Der Telefon Anruf (German Version)” from The Telephone Call (1987 EMI). Listen to this track and you will hear similarities in later work by New Order, particularly the comping synth chords and pattern. 3:47 New Order, “World (The Price Of Love) (Radio Edit)” from World. (The Price Of Love) (1993 London Records). CD single of the track also found on the album Republic (1993 London Records). This sounds as if New Order is still thanking Kraftwerk for their inspiration. 3:39 Opening background music: New Order, “Confusion (Instrumental)” (1983 Streetwise). Mixed by Arthur Baker and John "Jellybean" Benitez. New Order's sixth single and their first collaboration with Arthur Baker. Released August 22, 1983. Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. For additional notes, please see my blog, Noise and Notations.
Skateboard Marketing Ltd. Company Overview: Skateboard Marketing Ltd. has been at the forefront of independent metal radio promotion for the past 30 years since forming in 1991. The company has worked with legendary rock and metal heavyweights such as Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Pantera, Soilwork, Testament, Morbid Angel, Black Label Society and Kid Rock, among countless others. Skateboard Marketing operates within North America and is located in New York. Their concept is to get radio airplay in any place that has metal or rock programming. They still believe in artist development and building a fan base for the unknown artist. Every band has their time to shine, but that takes artist development. Skateboard Marketing Ltd owner, Munsey Ricci, is a former PolyGram Records executive who was the Director of National Metal Promotion from 1989-1991 and created the first metal department for the label and all affiliated labels, including Mercury, Polydor, RooArt, and London Records. Ricci also worked for the famed Combat/In-Effect Records in Hollis, Queens. Ricci was also on the editorial staff and collated the magazine for CMJ Media and a former syndicated radio programmer prior to PolyGram Records. Ricci spent 5 years as MD/PD for his college station WQCC while attending college. Covering the entire spectrum of radio with syndicated, satellite, commercial, and college metal. Skateboard Marketing covers over 350 stations nationally for the US and Canada. This includes all the syndicated, commercial metal and rock specialty shows with college and public radio. "It's any outlet where a record can be heard" Artist development starts on the street, in someone's bedroom on their stereo, or even a fan listening to something new in their car. Today a new band will have 20 fans, tomorrow they will have 50. It's all a stepping stone to bring something cool to the masses. It all applies to heritage artists as well. The only difference is they sold 2 million records to go with it. It's about creating the new fan whether it's for Motorhead and Black Sabbath, or for new artists such as Misery Kills. The company's staple roster consists of, Overkill, Testament, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Exodus, Death Angel, Soilwork, Biohazard, Ozzy Osbourne, Doro Pesch, and Sepultura It's a huge pleasure to be graced by talent on all levels. There is nothing better than getting on the phones in the morning and "Making something from nothing" Music is in the blood of every band, industry executive and fan. The companies office is based 25 minutes east of Manhattan, in Neighboring Valley Stream. They have a staff of 2 people covering syndicated, commercial , and college radio, as well as social media on board. New York-based radio promotion powerhouse Skateboard Marketing Ltd., headed by music industry veteran Munsey Ricci, is celebrating its 30th anniversary of taking heavy metal and hard rock music to the airwaves. “It's been 30 years already,” Ricci says. “Time seems to fly when you're having fun. I've been blessed and graced to have the opportunity to work with the artist roster we have. Every morning I get up and still live to walk into the office and do this gig. I just don't get tired of it and need more!” Founded in 1991 by the former PolyGram Records executive, Skateboard Marketing Ltd. quickly established itself as the leader in radio and artist development with a focus on all formats of aggressive music for three decades. Love of music, longstanding relationships and profound respect from colleagues and artists have earned the company a reputation as the go-to company to for national radio promotion in North America. “Munsey and Skateboard Marketing do what they do because they LOVE IT,” says SiriusXM's Jose “Metal Ambassador” Mangin. “There's no one in the world that is as seasoned and dedicated to the art of metal promotion. I've been helping Munsey spread the good gospel of metal for 25 years, and we're both just getting started! Congrats on 30 f'in years of dominance!” Syndicated radio host and author Full Metal Jackie adds, “Munsey is integral to the heavy music scene. He carries the torch proudly and at this point he is basically a de facto member of most of your favorite metal bands. Cheers Munsey & Skateboard.” These sentiments are echoed by the artist's Skateboard Marketing Ltd. has represented, with many noting the integral part the company has played in their success. “Skateboard Marketing has been part of my team for 20 years now,” says Megadeth bassist David Ellefson. “They understand and connect with my fans and record buying customers which makes the business of music that much better and easier. Happy 30th Skateboard and thanks for all you do!” Says Overkill vocalist Bobby Blitz, “Congratulations to Munsey and Skateboard on 30 years of keeping the airwaves chock full of the heaviest metal! For decades now we call him the 6th member in the Overkill camp, as he has gone above and beyond to help bring our craft to those who crave it. Happy anniversary Skateboard, from Chaly and the boys!” Singerman Entertainment's Todd Singerman notes, “Skateboard Marketing, under the enthusiastic stewardship of Munsey Ricci, has helped consistently propel Motörhead's music to the ears and hearts of thousands upon thousands of ears for over three decades. Munsey remains that rare combination of class and action.” Add Wendy Dio, “Munsey Ricci and Skateboard Marketing have supported every Dio record throughout Ronnie's career and continue to support us.” While Director of National Metal Radio Promotion at PolyGram Records, Ricci created the first metal radio department for the label and all of its affiliates, including Mercury Records, Polydor Records, RooArt and London Records, where the artist roster included bands like Mortal Sin, Onslaught, Yngwie Malmsteen, Kiss, Doro Pesch, The Scorpions, Rush, Tony MacAlpine, and Vinny Moore. Ricci also previously worked for CMJ Media and Combat/In-Effect Records, and programmed radio for five years prior to his label stint, learning and working next to some of the most influential people in the radio promotion world and leading to the success of Skateboard Marketing Ltd. “I've had the pleasure of knowing Munsey for close to 25 years,” says Rob Rush, Program Director/PM Drive Jock 94.3 The Shark Long Island. “He is a consummate professional and has always gone above and beyond for the bands that he promotes, and the radio stations that play his bands. He is a true class act and I'm proud to call him one of my best friends! Here's to 30 more years of Munsey and Skateboard Marketing!!!” SiriusXM Volume's “TrunkNation” host Eddie Trunk conquers. “I've known and worked with Munsey for all 30 years of Skateboard Marketing and beyond,” he says. “He's always had a great passion for rock and metal music and all the projects he works. All the best for the next 30 to all at Skateboard!” Seeing a void for heavy music in the radio trades, Ricci launched Metal Contraband in 2016. Metal Contraband, in conjunction with Radio Contraband, fills that gap as a destination for labels, management and artists looking for accurate information, including a metal chart consisting of commercial, syndication as well as large college stations, a metal news section for up-to-date news on tours and festivals, ad dates and street dates. Also included is an overall release schedule for metal add dates at radio. Metal Contraband has become the most reliable source to gauge the success of a record at radio. Adds Joey Z of longtime Skateboard client Life Of Agony, “It's hard to believe that Munsey and the team at Skateboard Marketing have been grinding it out for all of us for 30 years. Life Of Agony is so grateful for all the help and support the team has given us throughout the years... We wish them continued success for at least another 30!!” “Munsey is the only metal radio game in town,” says Adrenaline PR's Maria Ferrero. “Period.” The company's roster has ranged from the smallest to the biggest heavy metal and hard rock bands. Its staple roster consists of Motörhead, Overkill, Testament, Judas Priest, Ronnie James Dio, Black Sabbath, Exodus, Death Angel, Soilwork, Parkway Drive, Ozzy Osbourne, Sepultura, Soulfly, and many labels including Napalm, Nuclear Blast, Century Media, E- One Entertainment, Warner Music, BMG, Sony, Pavement, Metalville, Spinefarm, Fearless and Universal. Skateboard Marketing Ltd. has also worked on radio campaigns with Iron Maiden, Monster Magnet, Crowbar, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Doro Pesch, Veil Of Maya, At The Gates, Body Count, High On Fire and many others. “Rip Magazine and Skateboard Marketing rolled loud and proud together back in the day,” says Lonn M. Friend, author of Life on Planet Rock. “Congrats to Munsey on three decades of prosperous decadence.” SKATEBOARD MARKETING online: www.Skateboard-Marketing.com www.facebook.com/pages/Skateboard-Marketing-Ltd/102440986494312 www.instagram.com/skateboardmarketing https://twitter.com/Skateboardmkt www.pinterest.com/skateboardmkt http://skateboardmarketing.tumblr.com www.youtube.com/skateboardmarketing1 METAL CONTRABAND online: http://metalcontraband.com www.facebook.com/metalcontraband www.instagram.com/metalcontraband https://twitter.com/Metalcontraband For press inquiries and additional information, please contact Adrenaline PR: Maria Ferrero, 732-462-4262, maria@adrenalinepr.com Get your free 3 Keys to Freedom training at www.iFreedomHackNow.com

RockerMike and Rob discuss the making of Rolling Stones Satanic Majesties Request Their Satanic Majesties Request is a studio album by the English rock band the Rolling Stones, released in December 1967 by Decca Records in the UK and by London Records in the US. It is their sixth British and eighth American studio album, and their first to be released in identical versions in both countries. Kieran and Derek are joined by Dave Browne from Dublin Band, PictureHouse. Originally signed to London Records in 1994, a rather tumultuous time resulted in the band returning to their native Dublin. They self-financed the release of their debut album "Shine Box". The album produced a number of popular singles such as "Somebody Somewhere", "The World and His Dog" and the smash hit "Heavenly Day". With success in their native Ireland the band toured with fellow Irish band The Saw Doctors on their UK tour in 1996. They later supported Bon Jovi in Dublin in the following year. We also talk of the smash hit Sunburst. Dave talks to the lads about the origins of the band and the stories behind touring with Meat Loaf and the perils of the recording industry. On this episode of Spaceport Radio, Reed and I catch up with my friend Tom Ashton about life as a guitarist for eminent post-punk band The March Violets. his long career as a composer for films. what it was like living in the 'goth ground zero' of Leeds in the 80s, producing albums in his Athens, Georgia studio, and what bands he has an eye on in 2021. I always enjoy getting to sit down with Tom and experience his stories and his special insight into the creative process, a perspective that goes beyond music and applies to any artistic discipline. Tom Ashton is an original founder member and guitarist of legendary early 80's British darkwavers The March Violets. Based in Gothic central, Leeds, UK, the band released many tracks which went on to be rated as classics of their genre. He also guested in bands such as Sisters Of Mercy, The Danse Society and toured with Clan Of Xymox. In 1987 his music was featured in director John Hughes' coming of age drama, Some Kind Of Wonderful. A year later he co-wrote the score for Zelda Barron's teen thriller Forbidden Sun during his stint in London Records' band Hard Rain. After reforming in 2007, The March Violets released their first proper studio album in 2013, Made Glorious. The band also toured extensively in the US and Europe. In 2012 Tom returned to film scoring and has now completed 8 features with director Daniel E. Falicki and two shorts for director Ryan Lieske. In 2016 he founded SubVon Studio based in Athens, Georgia, and since then has recorded, mixed, and mastered many Georgia based darkwave bands including Vision Video, Tears For The Dying, Hip To Death, and Entertainment! Andy is a fellow and a board member of the Professional Speaking Association UK and Ireland, and a fellow of the Learning and Performance Institute, as well as a Master of the Institute for Sales Management. He is also one of just 26 recipients of the PSA's top honor, the Award of Excellence. And, believe me, he didn’t take any shortcuts to accomplish any of those achievements. Andy came from a background where the expectation was that he'd be a lawyer or an accountant and he did study accountancy, then switched to political science. After two years at a university, he left to work in the music recording industry, something he had dreamed of for a long time. He scouted bands for London Records. Andy bounced around to many jobs in his twenties as he lacked direction. He worked as a civil servant, ran car parks, did sound engineering, tax collecting, worked on film sets, and at some of the finest golf clubs in the world. During this time, he traveled extensively around the world, working all along the way. Some of his jobs lasted a couple of years before he moved on to new places. In this week’s Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about Andy’s journey: Andy said working on film sets was one of his favorite experiences and next to that was working as a steward at the Royal Albert Hall in London. He wrote letters home to family and friends as he traveled and kept copies of his writing as he also wanted to become a professional writer. Andy’s father started a business networking organization with which Andy worked for seven years. He ran networking groups and developed a training and speaking program. He repositioned his career to focus on professional relationships and wrote his two most recent books: Connected Leadership and Just Ask: Why Seeking Support Is Your Greatest Strength. Andy also hosts The Connected Leadership Podcast in which he interviews a variety of business leaders discussing the role that networks and professional relationships play in leadership success. TRUE HOUSE STORIES WITH FARLEY & HELLER INTERVIEW BY LENNY FONTANA PODCAST 025 (PART 2) Respected UK dance music producers and remixers, Terry Farley and Pete Heller initially found success in the UK in the early 90s. Londoner Terry Farley was a fan of Studio One reggae and ska before becoming involved with the London soul club scene during the 80s. Pete Heller grew up on the south coast of England and began his musical career by Djing in a Brighton discotheque, playing disco, hip-hop and house. After playing warm-up sets for Danny Rampling, Heller and Andrew Weatherall formed the Boy's Own collective, running a fanzine, Boy's Own club nights and eventually a record label - Junior Boy's Own. Farley and Heller's initial productions as a team with Hugo Nicholson were released as Bocca Juniors. Since then, they have remixed for many artists including Michael Jackson, Jamiroquai, Sunscreem, K-Klass, Simply Red, New Order, U2, Janet Jackson, Boy George, and the Pet Shop Boys. Their own productions have appeared under the name Fire Island and have been hugely popular on the club scene. As Fire Island, they covered Machine's 1979 classic ‘There But For The Grace Of God'. Their 1997 recording ‘Ultra Flava' was a huge hit in European clubs and Ibiza and eventually became a UK Top 40 hit when the vocals of Ultra Naté were added. In 1999, Heller's track ‘Big Love' was signed to Pete Tong's London Records and quickly became ubiquitous on European dancefloors (especially those in Ibiza) before entering the UK charts at number 12. Building on their reputation as excellent club DJs, they also mixed Late Night Sessions for the Ministry
Flowered up with Des Penney in conversation with David Eastaugh The band was formed in mid-1989 by singer Liam Maher along with lifelong friend, Darren 'Des' Penney. Des would co-write lyrics and manage the band. The original line up included the late John O'brien on drums, Joe Maher, Liam's younger brother, on guitar and bass player Andrew Jackson. Simon Gannon would guest on keyboard and this line up would play the first two gigs. After a few changes in personnel, the settled line-up included keyboardist Tim Dorney and drummer John Tuvey, with dancer Barry Mooncult adding to their live shows. After releasing two singles ("It's On" and "Phobia") on Heavenly Records, both of which were minor hits, Flowered Up signed to London Records and recorded their only album, A Life With Brian, in 1991. "Take It" had lyrics from Joe Strummer. The group appeared on the covers of both Melody Maker and NME before releasing the album. A Life With Brian contained many of their popular live songs, as well as new versions of the previously released singles. Not long afterwards, Flowered Up released the 13-minute-long single "Weekender" on Heavenly, with a video directed by W.I.Z. starring Lee Whitlock and Anna Haigh. Despite the group's - and Heavenly's - refusal to compromise on a standard-length edit for radio play (although two "radio edits" were circulated, neither really addressed the needs of radio programmers, as one was merely the full-length version but with the two instances of the phrase "fuck off" muted, while the other reduced the length of the intro, but still ran for over 12 minutes), the track went on to become their biggest hit, reaching number 20 in the UK Singles Chart. After much-publicised drug problems with some members of the band, and unproductive (and some unreleased) studio work, the band split up. Keyboardist Tim Dorney went on to form Republica.

Hello dear listeners, and welcome back to another episode of The ODDentity Podcast on the PodMoth Media Network, your weekly foray into the weird, wonky, and sometimes downright spooky. After completing the research on Jack the Ripper last week, I came to the realization that this topic is so large that it actually needs a part 3. So, this week I'll tackle the last 2 canonical Ripper victims and also discuss the top 5 suspects for Jack the Ripper as well as take a look at more recent suspicions of who the Ripper may have been. I was going to incorporate all of the remaining information into a second episode but felt that the victims of Jack the Ripper deserved the extra airtime. If you've not yet listened to part 1 or part 2 of the Jack the Ripper series, please do so before listening to part 3. I've been podcasting since 2017 and I thought it was about time I created some merch. I know, I know, it's way past due. Merch is now available at Shop.spreadshirt.com/oddpodmerch. There are a few to choose from and I think you'll like them. There are also lots of options from mousepads and buttons to tees and hats. From now until September 25th, all orders are 15% off! Show off your weird side and support your favorite podcast! Before we proceed further, please note that the information in this episode may be distressing to some listeners. Listener discretion is advised. The ODDentity Podcast is brought to you on a weekly basis by host Janine Mercer. This week its the Sugababes debut album One Touch, including the era defining debut single Overload which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2020. The Last special with Joe Nolte in conversation with David Eastaugh The band was initially inspired by the nascent CBGB’s scene as well as the first Modern Lovers album. Its sound was a mix of garage rock, surf rock, folk rock and psychedelic rock. The first settled line-up included Vitus Mataré (keyboards, flute), the Nolte brothers, and Jack Reynolds (drums). After three self-financed singles, the band was signed by Bomp! Records, who issued the debut album L.A. Explosion!in 1979 (described by Trouser Press as "a near-perfect debut").[2] It was also issued in Germany (Line Records), Japan Trio/Trash Records), and the UK by London Records. They recorded a second album, Look Again (1980), which has never been released. The original members began to disappear until its demise in November 1985, with David Nolte joining Wednesday Week and later Lucky, and Mataré forming Trotsky Icepick. The band was considered a major influence on the psychedelia-influenced LA bands of the mid-1980s, including The Bangles and The Three O'Clock, as well as the South Bay punk bands such as Black Flag and the Descendents. Joe reformed the band in 1988 with Mike Nolte along with new members Luke Lohnes (guitar, vocals), Larry P. Manke (bass guitar), and Dave Nazworthy (of Chemical People) (drums). This line-up signed to SST Records, releasing three albums between 1988 and 1996. The early 80’s lineup of the band reunited for occasional reunion shows in Southern California between 2005 and 2013. That year, The Last released a new album for the label End Sounds featuring the Descendents/All rhythm section of Karl Alvarez and Bill Stevenson.

[GROUP PICK] In 1969, Black Sabbath helped breathe life into a new form of rock called heavy metal--and in 1991, Sleep did the same thing to heavy metal, ushering in a bigger, jammier, and smokier incarnation called stoner metal. Although metal had reached it's peak in popularity in that time, for a lot of fans it had lost it's luster. Metalheads and stoners went underground, finding refuge in genres like doom metal and bands that just jammed hard in their friend's basements, beer-in-hand and bong smoke filling the rooms, like the metal they fell in love with--and Sleep was there to help. Their 1992 release "Sleep's Holy Mountain" was stoner metal's early magnum opus, and set a high bar for those that followed. With widespread critical approval and murmurings in the metal scene about them being the second coming of Black Sabbath, they should have complete artistic freedom on their next project... right? Well... although promised complete artistic freedom at first, once actually signed to London Records, the A&R member who had made the promise was replaced, and Sleep had a dilemma. For the past several years, they had been crafting an hour long epic, referring to it as "Dopesmoker" (due to the massive amounts of cannabis that were "critical" to the writing process) when performing it live and in 1996, freshly out of their deal with Earache Records, they were ready to record it. The band felt as if it was one song and needed to remain that way, without editing it down, but London Records didn't agree. They wanted something that was a little more marketable and had David Sardy create a mixed down 6 track version of it. Sleep and London Records stayed in a deadlock over this and the band actually broke up over the negative experience, Al Cicerno and Chris Hakius going on to create the transcendent band Om and Matt Pike creating High On Fire. But the album was destined to be set free and in 1999 a bootleg version called "Jerusalem" was released, the title based on what the band had been calling the song late in the process, with a Middle Eastern desert theme in mind. However, it was only the 6 track cut of the album, so finally in 2003 they released "Dopesmoker," the song in it's entirety. Sweet Mary consistently brought the crowd to a screaming frenzy with her version of the "Orange Blossom Special." The music of Greezy Wheels reflected the cultural dichotomy of Austin in the 1970s — a unique place where hippies had roots deep in the heart of Texas. Greezy Wheels opened Willie Nelson's first ever Armadillo World Headquarters show, putting him in front of the hippies who then adopted him and have been his fans ever since. They have shared the stage with (literally) too many greats to name. The band played up to 1978, when they took a 23-year hiatus. Greezy Wheels reformed in 2001 and are now recording for their own label, MaHatMa Records, after releasing two CDs on the Tana Records label. Their music has become more sophisticated, but has kept its off-the-page personality and musical comparisons are difficult to make. Principal writer and leader, Cleve Hattersley, continues to write quirky music that gets good airplay around the country. Sweet Mary still blows people up with her fiddle.Current members of the band: Cleve Hattersley on vocals, guitar, slide guitar, Lissa Hattersley on vocals, Sweet Mary Hattersley on fiddle and vocals, Penny Jo Pullus on vocals, Brad Houser (original member of Edie Brickell & New Bohemians) on bass and baritone sax, John Bush (also an original New Bohemian) on drums, and Matt Hubbard (7 Walkers) on keyboards, harmonica, accordion and trombone.CD's: 'Millennium Greezy' (2001), 'HipPop' (2004), 'String Theory' (2007), 'Gone Greezy' (2011), Kitty Cat Jesus (2013), Unusual Thing (2014)Jeffrey Bryan:Born and raised in Los Angeles. Joy Division's stripped-down sound signaled a new direction for music in 1978, but the lyrics to this song would prove horribly portentous. Credits: WM UK, London Records, Universal Music International Ltda, Palare, BBE See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The guys are joined this week by DBG VIP The Rockin' Donkey for a Y&T Discussion. Formed in 1973 in Oakland, California, Y&T were originally known as Yesterday and Today. After two good, but poorly received, albums for London Records the band, featuring singer/guitarist Dave Meneketti, guitarist Joey Alves, bassist Phil Kennemore, and drummer Leonard Haze, were signed to A&M Records. 1981's Earthshaker would kick off the newly re-branded Y&T and launch a trilogy of albums that formed the backbone of their concert set list and solidified their fan base. Rounding out that trilogy were 1982's Black Tiger and 1983's Mean Streak. While these albums had moderate success, the higher positions of the Billboard charts continued to elude Y&T. That theme would continue with 1984's In Rock We Trust but the tide would change with the release of the song Summertime Girls. Originally appearing as the lone studio track on the live Open Fire album, the song would get added to 1985's Down for the Count and give Y&T some serious commercial attention. That attention would be fleeting however as Summertime Girls remains their biggest hit single and Y&T was subsequently dropped from A&M Records. Y&T 1987 saw the band re-emerge on the rock-heavy Geffen label. Original drummer Leonard Haze was out and new drummer Jimmy Degrasso was in. Contagious had every ingredient from the keyboard to the hooks to the hairspray that should've assured bigger success. Unfortunately, the guiding hand of John Kalodner couldn't pull Y&T to the success of which he had with Aerosmith. After releasing 1990's Ten album (featuring new guitarist Stef Burns replacing Alves), Y&T took a long break as the new wave of Grunge music started to take over. 1995 saw the band return with Musically Incorrect; an album that had solid material yet certainly was not flavor-of-the-week fare. That trend would continue with 1997's aptly titled Endangered Species. Y&T would go on an extended hiatus as guitarist/singer Dave Meneketti focused on a solo career. The band would come back to rave reviews in 2010 with Facemelter (featuring new drummer Mike Vanderhule); an album that showed a serious return to form for the band. Tragically, this would be the final album for bassist Phil Kennemore who succumbed to cancer during the touring cycle for the album. Y&T would soldier on with replacement bassist Brad Lang before being replaced in 2016 by Aaron Leigh. The band had two more tragic losses in 2016 as original drummer Leonard Haze and longtime sound man Tom Size both passed away. In this in-depth discussion your hosts and guest discuss the history of the band and go through each album in the studio discography. Favorite and least favorite tracks are discussed as well as album covers and lyrics. Underlining much of the conversation are theories of why this amazing band never achieved bigger success. It's a long, fun discussion about a band that continues to wow crowds 40 years after the release of their first album. We hope you enjoy Y&T Discussion - Ep263 and SHARE with a friend! Buy Music! Y&T iTunes Review: Okay... I'm hooked! by DaveChandler22 on Nov 09, 2016 Rating: ★★★★★ I just started listening a last week. I listened to "1974 in Review" and that was cool! I grew up a Kiss fan. I loved that so much Kiss came up and the Casablanca insight. Also, I really enjoyed the Ratt/Alexi show! I had forgotten how great Ratt was. I'll be looking for some of those songs you guys played. I will going back and listening to more past shows (more than likely all of the past shows) as well as looking forward to your new ones. Thanks guys! We had our first guest! Dug McCormack! He's a swella fella! Check out his band! https://psychicdog.bandcamp.com/ No Joke! is written by Curt Kirkwood and Chris Kirkwood and produced by Paul Leary under London Records. We don't claim to own their music because that's a dickish thing to do. Enjoy!
It was written for Otis Redding but he never sang it, became a hit for the Bee Gees and covered by numerous bands in various genres but who was the unlikely inspiration for 'To Love Somebody'? Nick Raphael of London Records explains how he signed the well known hip-hop artist Jay-Z, why most aspiring musicians are extremely unrealistic, how a great talent will not sell if they are unlikeable, and why any success in music, film and life is accomplished as a team.
Meticulously assembled then recorded down onto cassette, London producer Matt Whitehead reworks and splices together his two 30-minute sets from this year's Bloc Weekend (one performance being at Brackout, the tribute to the much-missed Ben Bracket that kickstarted the festval). Along with material released collaboratively as Cyantific and Signal Type, Matt has two essential electro 12"s out under his own name for London's Rebel Intelligence collective. Like his set from 2010's Bloc Weekend, this is the real deal. Play it loud. Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground Movement Rob Acid, Sontec, Dicabor, Alton Inc, Acid Warrior Straight out of Cologne in 1993, under the pseudonym Rob Acid, Babicz released his first single Happy Answer on London Records, which unexpectedly became a huge club hit. With the rise of acid house influenced records dominating the charts, Babicz was able to ride high on this new wave of club culture. In addition to becoming an in demand live performer using one of his other names, Acid Warrior, Babicz started to release singles on high profile imprints like Kompakt, Treibstoff and Steve Bug’s Audiomatique, as well as his own label, Junkfood In what Rob appropriately dubs “the rave years” in the mid-nineties, he was already playing all over the world. During this time Babicz teamed up with Mate Galic and psychedelic sonic experiences of every kind followed, which as Rob himself sums up perfectly came as a result of “excessive sound-research and absurd parties… transistor radio and porn films on big screen”. His affiliation with Force Inc a few years later brought a series of more experimental, less dancefloor-orientated works which suggested his theoretical musique concrete roots. By the turn of the new millennium, Babicz was striving for a different sound and thus began a new label, Shortcut. At the same time, he received multiple requests for sound design from hard and software producers, most notably resulting in the presets he produced for Native Instruments. In 2007 Robert released his landmark record, A Cheerful Temper on Systematic Recordings, which expertly moves between electronica, techno, minimal and classic house. Playing ‘live’ has always been a key feature of Babicz’s authentic musicianship; improvising instead of reeling off pre-determined sets has made his celebrated shows unquestionably unique events. He consistently delivers astonishing performances of his own productions built around warm melodies, blissed atmospherics & analogue bass - sometimes jacking, but mostly tripping and always around the foundations of his first love: techno. Consequently, Babicz has more than proven his worth in the world of dance music and his right to the title of pioneer and innovator, whether producing tech house, minimal or acid techno. With the release of Immortal Changes in early 2010, described by DJ Mag as a “marriage of organic groove and glistening electronic melodies” it is clear that Robert Babicz still has much more to give… Playlist: Intro r.babicz - remote kiss ( babiczstyle) r.babicz - the sun ( babiczsyle ) r.babicz - dark flower (fever album mix) ( systematic ) g.boratto - i feel ( babicz earth remix ) ( defray ) r.babicz - percofonik ( babiczstyle ) r.babicz - storm lunch ( babiczstyle ) r.babicz - astor (g.boratto rmx) ( systematic ) r.babicz - come closer ( lost babicz mix ) ( systematic ) r.babicz - simple feeling ( babiczstyle ) Special tanks to Luke Allen http://www.robertbabicz.de/ http://www.facebook.com/robertbabicz http://www.myspace.com/robertbabicz http://twitter.com/RobertBabicz http://soundcloud.com/robbabicz
