On the downside, one gripe some listeners have mentioned is the placement of the ad for The Detail Community subscription in the middle of every episode. While this may seem like a minor issue, it can disrupt the flow of the conversations being had during the podcast. Some listeners would prefer if this ad was placed at either the beginning or end of each episode instead.

Bradley Johnston grew his detailing business at an INSANE rate There are so many different levels in the detailing industry and nothing wrong with any of them but Bradley with Autoworks Detailing has really showed what you can make of a detailing business in what I would say is a pretty short amount of time. Bradley and I did a podcast episode nearly 2 years ago when he was detailing out of his home garage. Fast forward to today he is now providing his services out of what most would consider a dream detailing facility. He has seen every stage of detailing from being mobile to detailing from his garage to now having a state of the art facility where he offers far more than interior and exterior car detailing. He now offers top tier services such as PPF, window tint, and ceramic coating. Topics we discuss in this episode: ✔️ Is there a cap to just being a mobile detailer? ✔️Offering PPF and window tint to scale to the next level ✔️How health and fitness can keep you and your mind healthy as a business owner ✔️Free marketing before paid marketing I really enjoyed hanging out with Bradley and I know you are going to love what he has to say about his journey in the automotive detailing industry and how he grew his detailing business to what it is today
We can often times get so wrapped up in growing and making money in our detailing business that we forget to spend time either spending time with family or doing things that we enjoy. Joe with Sebring Shine and Supply is a perfect representation of not only a good human but someone who really values making an impact on people and his family. In this episode Joe shares with us what stage his business is at and the importance of not overextending. He expresses how he enjoys that his business is run the way it is so that he doesn't have to stress about a crazy amount of overhead and that he can not only provide money but provide his time to his family while he does his job. I am a huge advocate of growing an auto detailing business to match exactly what you want in your life. This means noy getting trapped into believing you have to have a state of the art facility to succeed and Joe is a true representation of that. He performs his services from home, charges what he wants, and runs a successful operation. Everybody's version of success and Joe's version of success is a true reflection of his character. He wants to make an impact on people and be the best version he can be for his family. I truly admire this of him and speaking with him opened my eyes up to a lot of things. I know we are in the industry of car detailing specifically but sometimes it is really cool to get the opportunity to just talk to people on a real level about things in life and family that carry into our detailing businesses. I think you are going to really enjoy this episode.
You might be the reason your auto detailing business is not scaling at the rate you thought it would! Here is what I mean. In order to grow any business but in this case a detailing business you have to excel at a few things. These things are branding, marketing, and networking. Most detailers think that they are going good at these things but in all reality they are not looking at their business from the outside looking in. They get trapped on the inside and can't see that their business actually needs work in all three of these categories. And trust me I have been there. My first ever mobile detailing business sucked. I did not know that my branding was boo boo and that my marketing was pretty much non existent. I thought everything was pretty good just because I spent time creating everything. And that is where I messed up. Once I realized that I was probably never going to grow doing what I was doing I really started reaching out to others to get an outside perspective of what they thought of my brand. Their opinions blew my mind and gave me a whole new perspective. So I pivoted and really focused on making my brand look authentic and unique and focused on putting my business online so that I could be found by potential clients. This is where my auto detailing business really started to grow.
Is it really worth it to have thousands of dollars in expenses every month? Or better yet does it fit the goals you created when you first started your detailing business? Being your own boss and creating freedom for yourself is probably a couple benefits you wanted when you first started your own detailing business. The one thing that can take all of that away is growing way too fast or by over extending and building a business that is too big. By no means am I saying that having employees or a big shop is a bad thing or that it is not profitable because it definitely is if done right. What I will say though is that being small has so many benefits that being big doesn't have. So really consider growing your car detailing business slow and take advantages of the perks that being small has to offer.
Can you imagine your auto detailing business providing you with EXACTLY what you want in life? I mean really think about what you want out of your business. Is it making $1,000 a week? Is it making $5,000 a week? Or maybe it is hiring employees and allowing you to shed some of the physical tasks that come with detailing? Whatever goal you have it is highly important to have some type of direction so that you can achieve these things. In this episode I talk about something super simple but highly effective for leveling up a detailing business. Plus, it is something I do on a regular basis. In this episode you will learn: How to come up with small goals that will lead to the "big dream" you have in your head How to be productive by working in baby steps Things I would accomplish first to achieve some of the most common goals detailers may have
If you are a regular listener then you know I have been inactive for a couple months. I feel like I owe it to everyone to tell you what I have been up to and give you a little look at what's been going on in my life. This episode is just to let you guys know what's been going on and to give you peace of mind that the episodes and content will be back as usual going forward.
Have any of your detailing clients said things like "let me talk to my wife" or "let me think on it" when you tell them the price of your services? It is honestly pretty common and it is normally due to a few different things such as: trust, availability, or most commonly the price is out of their budget. Now most detailing businesses will let these clients slide through the cracks and not put any effort into trying to get them on the schedule. In this episode of The Detail Spot Podcast I want to leave you with a few different approaches to start converting more of these clients that don't initially book with you. Don't get me wrong, not every single client will still automatically say yes but I can promise you that you will still convert some of these after using what's inside this podcast episode.
We talk a lot on this episode about achieving success or taking our auto detailing businesses to the next level but who better to really shine light on the topic than Jeremy Stevens the owner of Shine Supply and Stevens Detailing. This is a guy that I have truly looked up to in this industry from the very beginning and the one that I consider the G.O.A.T. of detailing. This is due to his experience, how he approaches business, and just overall him as a person. In this episode we talk about A LOT of different topics including: Jeremy's take on what every business owner should do to take their business up a level and to have not just short term gains but long term success. How you can't do anything right if you don't work on yourself first The evolution of detailing from when Jeremy started in the 90's to now The reason going all in is the only way. That is what we are going to get into in this episode.
Big question is should you offer car wash services as an auto detailer? The car wash service and detailing service is so similar but two totally different business models. Detailing being a lot more in depth and car washing being on the cheaper side and a lot quicker. I notice a lot of detailers offering $20-$40 washes as well as their normal car detailing packages and yes this can be extremely profitable. I mean just think if you did 10 washes at $40 in a day that is $400 which is not bad for a days worth of work. The big question is does it look bad for a detailer to offer that type of service at such a low price point. That is what we are going to get into in this episode.
Did you just start your auto detailing business? Or have you been open for awhile now but just not really growing at the rate you wish you would? Check this out! In this episode I will share a few things that I think could really benefit you and could help grow that much quicker and trust me I have been in your shoes before. My business within the first year didn't do anything and to be honest I was probably losing money. I did everything wrong until I started pivoting and doing some of the things I talk about in this episode. In this episode you will learn: How to get more clients to know who you are How to look more professional One place that you should be detailing for that can really help boost your growth As always I hope you enjoy the episode and if you ever have any questions or want to connect always feel free to send me a message on Instagram.
2023 is here and it is definitely going to be the year you take your auto detailing business to the next level. That could mean more money, a new shop, hiring employees, or maybe its taking a step away to let your business work for you. Whatever the case may be it will require some strategy and effort on your end to make sure things start to happen. In this episode of The Detail Spot Podcast we are talking about some things that you and I can both work on to ensure we blow 2023 out of the park and so that we can have a record setting year. This means no quitting after a month or two and going back to doing the same thing we were in 2022. I personally want to have a banger year and I know you probably do too. In this episode you will learn: How to achieve your goals by taking small steps How to stay consistent so that you can take your detailing business beyond what you can imagine How to drown out what doesn't make you money
Have you ever played the game Would You Rather? Or maybe you call it something like This or That. I figured it would be pretty fun to play it with auto detailing topics. For example: Would you rather be a mobile or shop based detailing company? Or would you rather detail a muddy exterior on a lifted truck or detail a dirty interior on a mini van? I give my opinions on why I chose the ones I did in this episode and a little advice / tips to go with each one of them.
The auto detailing industry is a crazy space that I absolutely love but I also hate some areas of it and I am sure you share some of the same like and dislikes. Detailing is something I have been doing since I was a junior in high school and it is something that has taught me a ton about work ethic, branding, and just overall how to build something that I really take pride in. It is also a space that I have really got to see change over time for the good and for the bad. In this episode you will learn: 3 reasons I love the car detailing industry 3 reasons I hate the industry
There are so many car detailers starting everyday. So how to you compete with the ones that are charging a rate that is EXTREMELY low? I hear so often that these detailers that are charging $50 for "Full Details" are ruining the detailing industry but I am not sure that it is the case. I used to think these detailers with a crazy low price we taking business from me, that they were giving a false narrative to the market, and that they were undercutting the detailers that do this as a career. I actually no longer think that way and in reality I actually think they help the industry and help the detailers that are really trying to stand out. In this episode you will learn: How the cheapest detailers actually help the industry in a way How to stand out in the auto detailing industry Why you should price your services based on how good your business looks and performs
In this episode of The Detail Spot Podcast we are going to answer some of the most asked questions that detailing business owners ask. First question I get a lot is: How much should I charge if I just started my detailing business within the last year to two years. Second question is: How to stay busy consistently or how to stay booked a little ahead of schedule? Third: Biggest advice tip that I could give a detailer looking to have success?
Paint correction and polishing can be overwhelming, frustrating, and complicated if you don't know what products and pads to use. It can be ultra overwhelming especially if you have too many products in your arsenal. In this episode I tell you what my favorite compound and polish is and which pads go great with them. The compound I recommend is a diminishing abrasive. This means it has enough "grit" to cut through some pretty heavy defects and after heating up this abrasive it will then turn to a polish like substance giving it the ability to finish out a lot better than other compounds. The polish I recommend for car detailing is an extremely versatile polish that can be used alone for enhancement services or to refine / finish out after compounding.
There are some pretty crazy myths that have been created by other detailers in the industry when it comes to starting or growing a car detailing business. Starting or growing a business is hard and takes a lot of effort from you as the owner. The one thing you don't need is false ideas in your head telling you not to do it or that you are not ready yet. Some of the myths in this episode may be some of the things holding you back. In this episode you will learn: - If you need a shop to detail out of - If you need to use the clients water or electric - If you have to know how to paint correct a vehicle when starting
Being your own boss is pretty freaking cool honestly and then you add getting to do something you are truly passionate about such as detailing cars makes it even cooler. But not to say that being the owner of an auto detailing business doesn't come with its ups and downs. There are so many different tasks we have to do such as market, build our online presence, excel in communication, network, and so much more. It can get pretty stressful sometimes and be mentally exhausting. In this episode Joe Woolard with Duck Detail and I talk about some pretty relatable things and some areas that you may be able to implement in your detailing business to help speed up your growth process. In this episode you'll learn: How to take care of your mental health as a detailer How to properly communicate with your clients The importance of sounding professional
There are a ton of areas that will require your attention when being the owner of your car detailing business but these two things I talk about in this episode are a couple areas that I think will give you maximum growth if you put a lot of your attention on them. These areas are two things I wish I would have done more of when I first started and would have honestly put us way further ahead than where we are today. In this episode you will learn: How to re-market to your existing clients Why reviews are so important to a successful detailing business A way to get more reviews consistently
Imagine being able to add an extra $500 - $1500 a week doing a couple very simple detailing services for clients that are already on your schedule. In this episode you will learn: 2 easy to provide auto detailing services you can provide for clients that are already on your schedule to raise your average ticket price per service. How to deliver / communicate these services to your clients Recommended products to make the service that much easier and to get a great result Selling extra services can be really uncomfortable sometimes and I also have that feeling. It is personally not my favorite thing in the world to do but it is something we as business owners need to do to increase revenue. The cool part is though is in this episode I breakdown how I offer certain services and a way to look at selling so it doesn't have to be intimidating. The "money maker" car detailing services that I talk about in this episode are going to be services that are a win win for you and your client. They are going to be affordable for them, easy to apply for you, and in my experience have a high conversion rate compared to some other services.

There will always be new detailers starting in this industry because of how easy it is to get started. It doesn't require really any money and the actual detailing of the vehicle isn't that hard. It is the business side of detailing that is the hard part. This is also what will filter out who will really make it or not. Ceramic coating jobs can be great money but have you ever thought about the downside to selling them? Ceramic coatings have all of these crazy good benefits and they last so much longer than your typical waxes or sealants. Coatings can and should get you more returning business than your basic detailing services if you sell them correctly and that's what this episode is all about. In this episode you will learn: How to sell ceramic coating services in a way that it still makes you money in the future Requiring an inspection every 6 months to a year after a coating is installed will benefit you and the client Why you should never set crazy high expectations out of a ceramic coating. One thing that all successful car detailing businesses have in common is a good marketing strategy. Marketing is the thing that pushes your brand in front of your ideal audience. This is what can really take your detailing business to that next level. This is easier said than done though because a lot of detailers are marketing completely wrong. When marketing you have to do a few things. You have to make sure you are putting your content in front of people who could actually be a paying customer, make sure your brand is solid and looks better than the rest, and you have to do things that stand out. There is Tik Tok, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and so many more. These platforms are like tools we have available to us to really help grow our detailing businesses. The thing is though is every other detailer has access to these same tools as well making it really competitive. Don't get discouraged though because you can use strategies and do things to really make your profile stand out resulting in more clients inquiring. When you first start your auto detailing business it is so fun. You become filled with excitement and passion for cleaning, maintaining, and protecting vehicles. I like to call this the honeymoon phase of being your own boss. After you realize detailing has become the thing that puts food on the table and pays the bills it becomes not as fun anymore. There is a point to where it gives you a crazy overwhelming and stressful feeling that is ultimately unhealthy for your mind and body. This feeling has personally hit me and gave me an immense amount of anxiety and a taste of depression. When we start our business this feeling is not what we are ultimately searching for. We start it because we want freedom and the enjoyment of not having to answer to a boss. Unfortunately, we did not know about all of the things that come with being self employed and the other side of detailing. But trust me, that burnout feeling can go away and be prevented. We have the power to do things in our business to make it enjoyable again or continue making it enjoyable. In this episode I share things I personally did wrong in my business and things that I started doing to reduce the stressful feeling of overwhelm or failure. This makes owning a detailing business that much more enjoyable again. In this episode you will learn: How to reduce stress in your day to day operation as a business owner How consistency and small wins can cut down on feeling burnt out How to reset your brain daily "Every industry be in the hopes to find someone willing to put some valuable content over and over like this channel does!! What is the perfect client and why are they any more important than any other paying customer? Building a sustainable and scalable auto detailing business is all based on how good your business is overall and how good your clients are. These "perfect" clients are the foundation for your business and will ultimately decide if your detailing business to what you dreamed it can be. Think about it this way yes every paying client is a great thing but what about the clients that respect your prices, respect your systems, want their vehicle detailed regularly, and are willing to pay more for better service. These are my definition of a perfect client and if you can get enough of these you will have an EXTREMELY successful business. In this episode you will learn: What a perfect client is What perfect clients want out of a detailer Things you can do to start adding better clients to your clientele list Rate, Review, & Follow "Detailing cars is one thing. Starting and running an auto detailing business is a lot of work. It takes a lot of focus in areas that we really do not know about when we initially start. And what happens in a lot of cases is detailers will wonder why they are not getting the leads they hoped for or getting the type of clients they really want to work with. Being able to charge $2000 - $3000 for ceramic coating and paint correction is not an uncommon thing in the detailing industry. But, is it truly worth the prices that some shops charge? First, I would say yes because the ultimate definition of whether or not something is "worth it or not" comes down to if people are still willing to pay that price or not. Clients are still paying for coatings at that price so I'd definitely say they are worth it. The thing is that there are coatings available now that make application way easier and do not take nearly as long. These coatings last just as long, protect against the same elements, and still require the vehicle to be maintained regularly. So what this does it makes it to where detailing companies can charge a good amount less and still make the same if not more than what some of the other higher ticket priced companies are charging. In this episode of The Detail Spot podcast we have Drew Huff and he shares a little about his detailing journey and his opinion on the ceramic coating market. He tells his opinions on whether or not this "holy water" product that is making us detailers a lot of money in the past 5-7 years is really worth it based on what it really does. Are you a hobby detailer or a professional detailer? In other words do you just simply detail in your business or do you do everything that goes into running a successful detailing business? Most of us are hobbyist when we first start. We know how to provide a great result and that's about it. The downfall to this is it takes so much more than just detailing to have success at this game. We have to brand, market, sell, etc. We have to simply do it all. But the moment we do place our focus on these areas is the moment we become a professional. Mobile detailing vs shop detailing is a pretty common crossroad that we all encounter somewhere along the way of our career as a detailer. Which is better though? In this episode you will get my opinion based on my own personal goals and will help you find out which is better for you based on your goals because that is ultimately what business is all about. Mobile detailing comes in all different shapes and sizes. You can literally do this out of any vehicle realistically. The fact that anyone can start in this industry with any vehicle and the minimum amount of equipment is super cool. Shop detailing is a little more complex. It takes a little more risk and work to succeed because of the extra overhead it requires. Shop detailing is a great direction to take if you are looking to offer more services than just detailing. They're both really great routes to take but I will share with you the direction I chose to take and why. Are you ready to take your business to the next level.
