Today's episode is the first in a series of conversations about what causes human societies to fall apart and what might come next. David talks to Luke Kemp, author of Goliath's Curse, about how we build our structures of authority and how they can fail. How were human societies organised before we had governments? What drove the creation of the first hierarchies of domination? Why did rising inequality so often lead to societal collapse? What does this teach us about the vulnerability of our own societies? Out now on PPF+: a bonus episode to accompany our recent exploration of the past, present and future of nuclear warfare in which David discusses John Hersey's Hiroshima (1946), the definitive account of what it's actually like to be on the receiving end of a nuclear attack. Amadae about what nuclear weapons and the prospect of nuclear war have done to the human condition. Was 1945 the decisive watershed in the history of humanity? In this episode of V-FM Pensions hosts Darren and Nico chat to Pan Trustees' Nicholas Chadha to explore what value for money means in modern trusteeship. Nick reflects on his journey from actuarial adviser to professional trustee, and shares insight into schemes at very different ends of the spectrum, from those entering the PPF with recovery plans acting as a drag on sponsors, to schemes managing surplus and difficult decisions around how it should be shared between members and employers. We discuss the ins and outs of the innovative Aberdeen Stagecoach deal as part of a wider conversation about future options for DB schemes. We also chat about barriers for schemes moving to superfunds and conflicts of interest within professional trustee firms. Nick makes the case that true value for money isn't about defaulting to industry orthodoxy... it's about spending wisely, challenging assumptions, and ultimately improving outcomes for members.
Today's episode explores the ideas of two late-twentieth-century thinkers who argued that political philosophy needs to be concerned with more than just justice. David talks to Paul Sagar about why Bernard Williams thought we should focus on questions about legitimacy and why Judith Shklar believed we should spend more time worrying about cruelty. Is the fundamental political question about how to achieve the best or is it about how to avoid the worst? And if it's the second, where should we start? Rennthusiast Radio is back with a simple question that hits every Porsche owner.Do you own your Porsche, or does it own you? This episode started with Will parking his 997.2 at the airport and posting one quick photo. The response was huge, and it exposed something we all deal with. Fear of door dings, theft, bad luck, and the stress that comes with driving a car you worked hard to earn.We play a fast “would you or wouldn't you” game with real-life scenarios. Airport garages, street parking overnight, grocery store runs, packed lots, and valet parking with a manual. Then we get into the bigger topic, tool car versus trophy car, and how your choices change based on mileage, rarity, and replacement cost.We also talk original paint, why it matters, when it should not, and how chasing perfect paint can make you drive less. We cover PPF, buying repainted cars the right way, and why surprises in the history can ruin the whole experience. If you've ever skipped a drive because you didn't want to risk the car, this one is for you.Watch and listen hereYouTube, Will: RennthusiastYouTube, Derek: ElevenAfterNinePodcast: Rennthusiast Radio on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and wherever you listen Hosted on Acast. In the third part of our series David and Paul Sagar explore what the German writer and sociologist Max Weber can teach us about the pitfalls of political life and political philosophy. Why is doing politics so hard? Why is it so hard to know what to do for the best when all the options are bad ones? How can we still do our best when the only means at our disposal is violence? And where does all this leave the prospects for lasting political change? In the second episode in our short series about how the history of ideas can help with the deepest puzzles of politics, David talks to political theorist Paul Sagar about the eighteenth-century polymath Adam Smith. Normally thought of as the original champion of free-market economics, Smith was far more interested in history, human psychology and the problems inherent in all political systems. What does it mean to live in a commercial society? How should we understand the promise and pitfalls of equality? Where does human liberty come from? And why has the Adam Smith Institute made a mockery of his name? As Episode 99 approaches a milestone, Monika reflects on how small, steady savings can quietly turn powerful when inflation works in the saver's favour. Beginning with an interaction at an SBI event for NRI clients - and a reminder of how deeply connected the podcast community has become - she introduces the idea of real return: what investors actually earn after inflation. This episode explains why nominal returns can be misleading, especially in fixed-income products, and why inflation is the most underestimated cost in personal finance.Monika breaks down why the current environment is unusually favourable for conservative savers. With retail inflation falling well below the RBI's target, several government-backed small savings schemes are now delivering positive and meaningful real returns. She walks through how products like PPF, SCSS, SSY, NSC, MIS, and KVP - all guaranteed and easily accessible - can form the core of a low-risk debt portfolio, particularly for retirees and risk-averse families. This is a rare phase, she notes, where safety and real wealth creation coexist, making it a sensible time to lock in long-term rates. In listener queries, Deepak Mittal, nearing retirement, asks where to reinvest maturing bond proceeds and whether a multi-asset fund makes sense at his age; Rohit Pal seeks clarity on behavioural economics concepts and risk-measurement metrics, along with reading recommendations; and Shubhojit Roy, a 32-year-old investor, asks how to rethink PPF contributions under the new tax regime, rebalance towards mutual funds, and realistically work towards a ₹4-5 crore goal over the next 15 years.Chapters:(00:00 – 00:00) When Nominal Returns Become Real Returns(00:00 – 00:00) Small Savings Schemes Offering Guaranteed Real Growth(00:00 – 00:00) Reinvesting Bond Maturities as You Approach Retirement(00:00 – 00:00) Understanding Behavioural Biases and Investment Risk Measures(00:00 – 00:00) Balancing PPF and Equity to Reach Long-Term Wealth GoalsIf you have financial questions that you'd like answers for, please email us at mailme@monikahalan.com Monika's book on basic money managementhttps://www.monikahalan.com/lets-talk-money-english/Monika's book on mutual fundshttps://www.monikahalan.com/lets-talk-mutual-funds/Monika's workbook on recording your financial lifehttps://www.monikahalan.com/lets-talk-legacy/Calculatorshttps://investor.sebi.gov.in/calculators/index.htmlYou can find Monika on her social media @monikahalan. Today's episode in our occasional series with historian Robert Saunders on significant political anniversaries looks at the event that blew British politics apart at the start of 1886. Today's episode in our season of live recordings from the Regent Street Cinema looks at the biopic of a revolutionary: Margaretha von Trotta's Rosa Luxemburg (1986), which explores the deeply unstable relationship between the personal and the political. David talks to writer and philosopher Lea Ypi (Free, Indignity) about where biography ends and philosophy begins and whether revolutionary politics requires the leading of a revolutionary life. What was Rosa Luxemburg's true cause? Who or what betrayed her and her ideas? And how does her legacy live on? Out now on PPF+: a bonus episode to accompany this series in which David and film historian Harrison Whitaker discuss the greatest Christmas film of ideas: Frank Capra's It's A Wonderful Life, which is much more than just a seasonal tearjerker. In this episode of The Career Report, Tim and Kristina talk about why reflection matters before you jump into setting new PPF goals. It's easy to rush into planning the next year without taking a moment to look back, but skipping that step often means missing what actually worked. They walk through how to review the past year honestly, how to recognize wins that are easy to overlook, and how to carry lessons forward without beating yourself up over what didn't go as planned. This conversation is about clarity, momentum, and setting yourself up for a stronger year ahead, not just creating another list of goals. If you're wrapping up the year and thinking about what's next, this episode will help you slow down just enough to move forward with intention.
The second episode in our live series from the Regent Street Cinema explores Louis Malle's My Dinner with Andre (1981), in which two men discuss the meaning of theatre, capitalism, love, science, faith and freedom over a meal. David talks to playwright and screenwriter Lee Hall (Billy Elliot, Rocketman) about how a great film can be made out of a single conversation. Who was the real Andre? How scripted was the dialogue? Who won the argument? And why has this film had such an extraordinary afterlife? Out tomorrow on PPF+: a bonus episode to accompany this series in which David and film historian Harrison Whitaker discuss the greatest Christmas film of ideas: Frank Capra's It's A Wonderful Life, which is much more than just a seasonal tearjerker. Today it's the first in our series of live episodes recorded at the Regent Street Cinema in London: David talks to the crime writers Nicci Gerrard and Sean French (aka Nicci French) about Alfred Hitchcock's Rope (1948), based on Patrick Hamilton's play of the same name, itself based on the real-life case of Leopold and Loeb. What is the true subject of this film: murder, sex, morality or something else? Why is James Stewart so hopelessly miscast? And how does all this connect to Nietzsche? In this episode, Nick discusses the importance of defining the race that small business owners are running, particularly in the context of the automotive detailing and PPF industries. He highlights common failure points, such as confusing effort with progress, the pitfalls of social media, and the dangers of competing on price. Nick emphasizes the need for clarity in business goals and strategies for 2026, encouraging listeners to focus on profitability and better customer relationships rather than just increasing activity or content creation.Chapters00:00 Defining the Race in Business10:02 The Social Media Race15:00 The Price Race19:49 The Busy Work Trap24:56 Strategies for 202629:55 Conclusion and Key Takeaways
Today's episode explores the trials of Nelson Mandela, variously charged by South Africa's apartheid state with treason, incitement, illegal foreign travel, sabotage and conspiracy across a decade that saw him more often in court than out. How did Mandela defend himself? What changed from his first trial to his last? Could any justice be found in a system of blatant oppression? And what happens when the line between lawyer, defendant and prisoner becomes impossibly blurred? Networking is essential for success in the auto detailing industry! In this video, David Elliott (CEO of Pearl Nano and host of Calling All Detailers Podcast) explains why every detailer should be actively networking with other trades (like PDR, tint, PPF, and upholstery) and even other detailers in their area. Here's why networking is a game-changer: Referral Opportunities: Spot services your client needs (like dent removal or PPF) that you don't offer, and refer them to a trusted network partner. Handle Overload: When you're slammed with work, refer clients to a trusted detailer down the street—don't let them wait three weeks! Build Community: Hosting events like a Christmas party helps strengthen relationships and ensures referrals flow both ways. Networking isn't about protecting "secrets" (there are none!), it's about mutual success and providing the best service for your customers. Live from Gulf Coast Auto Shield in Houston, we step into a shop where protection, performance, and community collide. John Gray walks us through the craft and the business: why modern paint protection film is the flagship service, how ceramic coatings and nano tint complete the package, and what it takes to keep high-dollar paint and sensors safe in a world of gravel, UV, and crowded freeways. We even go below the waterline to cover marine coatings that replace heavy-metal bottom paints with longer-lasting, cleaner tech that beats barnacles and cuts annual haul-outs.We dig into partnerships and process. A top-tier film supplier keeps new solutions flowing—from color PPF to windshield protection—while dealerships mix financing with outsourced installs for showroom-ready coverage on performance models. For buyers who want more control, going direct to specialists can save time and get better results. Education is a big part of the formula: club meetups, care clinics, and honest demos that teach safe washing, correct tools, and maintenance habits that preserve gloss and value. The shop is more than a service bay—it's a hub where owners trade tips, see rare metal up close, and learn how to protect it.Performance talk lights up the floor. We tour a GTR and Ferraris and make the case for hybrids as the new speed standard: instant torque, stunning 0–60 times, and real-world mpg that once seemed impossible. That shift changes how people think about ownership; when you plan to keep a car longer, smart protection turns from luxury to necessity. We also tackle the hidden cost center no one expects: glass. With ADAS, HUD, and specialty laminates, a modern windshield replacement can blow a budget. Clear windshield films aren't perfect yet, but they're already saving drivers from pitting and pricey recalibrations. We wrap with recalls and car news, from camera and airbag issues to the possibility of kei-sized city cars in the U.S., and a look at Lexus reviving the LFA and scaling up GR performance with serious hybrid muscle. Whether you're shielding a supercar, daily hybrid, or a boat that lives in the water, the playbook is the same: protect surfaces, prevent damage, and preserve value so every drive—or cruise—feels as good as day one. Sun on the shop floor, cutters snapping, and a Ford GT gleaming under fresh film—this one is for people who love cars and want them to last. We set up at Gulf Coast Auto Shield with owner John Gray to explore how a protection-first mindset turned a corner-bay detailing gig into three thriving Houston locations. The throughline is simple and powerful: do clean work, protect value, and treat every client like the next referral.John walks us through today's projects, including a Ferrari F12 getting full stealth paint protection film for a matte finish without the headaches of fragile factory matte paint. We compare vinyl color wraps to newer color PPF options, breaking down heat resistance, UV durability, and why warranties matter in Texas sun. You'll hear how stealth PPF can transform gloss to satin, stay reversible, and still guard against chips and rash—plus how ceramic coatings, nano-ceramic tint, windshield protection, and discrete radar/laser installs complete a smart, long-term protection plan.Car culture ties it all together. From the stereo-shop days that sparked an entire client network to cruise-ins where owners trade ideas on wheels and film, relationships keep the scene alive. We also hit the week's market note: GM easing no-flip rules for most Corvettes while keeping tight reins on the ZR1 to curb speculation. Then we review the 2025 Subaru Forester Wilderness, an off-road-leaning small SUV with copper accents, a big integrated screen, respectable MPG, and room for improvement in power and ground clearance—plus straight talk on pricing and segment rivals. If you're deciding between wraps and PPF, wondering how to keep a new finish flawless, or just love a good shop tour with serious hardware, you'll feel at home. Today we return to our series about epoch-making trials with the case of the book they tried and failed to ban. In 1960 Penguin Books was prosecuted at the Old Bailey under the new Obscene Publications Act (1959) over its plans to produce a cheap, unexpurgated edition of D. H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover. How did the prosecution try to persuade the jury that the book was a menace to public morals? Who were the expert witnesses called in its defence? What were the decisive arguments? And why was the judge's summing-up such a mistake? Out tomorrow on PPF+: David discusses the book at the heart of the case. Was Lady Chatterley's Lover really all about sex? Or was it all about class? Or was it in fact about something else entirely? How might humanity scrape through the rest of the century? Will future generations see us as intellectually vibrant or essentially trivial? If we turn out to be unknowable to those who follow us, does that mean we are unknowable to ourselves? A wide-ranging conversation about how past, present and future co-exist in time. Today we are bringing you a conversation on the evolving landscape for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and progressive pulmonary fibrosis (PPF) treatment. Ryan Haumschild, PharmD, MS, MBA, vice president of ambulatory pharmacy at Emory Healthcare and Winship Cancer Institute, spoke with Marilyn Glassberg, MD, the John W. Clarke Professor and Chair of medicine at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine; Ayodeji Adegunsoye, MD, MSc, PhD, FACP, FCCP, assistant professor at the University of Chicago; and Janet Pope, MD, MPH, professor of medicine and division member of rheumatology at the University of Western Ontario in Canada. IPF and PPF are increasingly prevalent conditions that pose a growing burden on both patients and health care systems. Despite the availability of FDA-approved antifibrotic therapies, the median survival for patients with IPF and PPF remains less than 5 years after diagnosis—underscoring the critical unmet needs that persist in this field. The panelists discussed the impact these conditions have on patients' lives, evaluated emerging agents, and addressed economic considerations that affect treatment decisions and health care resource allocation.
Today's episode explores some very big picture history: David talks to palaeontologist and science writer Henry Gee about the story of the human species from origin to peak to inevitable decline. When and how did Homo sapiens see off the competition from its rivals in the human and animal world? Why did that point mark the start of an inexorable drift towards extinction? In what ways are our strengths as a species also our fatal weaknesses? And how near are we to the end?
