For today's episode in the history of bad ideas David talks to philosopher Shannon Vallor about the myth that technology can be value free. It's easy to see why Silicon Valley is so keen on the idea that it's never the fault of the tech, only of the people who use it. But why do we let them get away with it? Where did this idea come from? How has it also poisoned arguments about gun laws and nuclear weapons? And what can we do to fight it and try to get technology that works with – not against – basic human values? Out now on PPF+: A bonus episode with historian of religion Alec Ryrie exploring ‘The Age of Hitler'. For today's episode in the history of bad ideas David talks to economic historian Marc Palen about monopoly, an idea that has always had its defenders as well as its fierce critics. Why do monopolies arise even in supposedly competitive economies? How did the anti-monopoly movement of Henry George in the late-19th century argue that the monopolists could be taken down? How are those struggles echoed in the fight against Silicon Valley monopolists today? And what has all this got to do with Monopoly the board game? Coming on Saturday on PPF+: A bonus episode with historian of religion Alec Ryrie exploring ‘The Age of Hitler'. S novinářem Vojtěchem Kristenem z INFO.CZ probíráme svět měnících se českých médií. Kam bude směřovat nižší sledování televizí? Bude nová digitální televize Oneplay v majetku PPF vlivnější než její mateřská TV Nova? A kdy?

For today's episode in the history of bad ideas David talks to cultural historian Tom Wright about charisma, a term that often feels essential for understanding modern politics but which ends up obscuring far more than it explains. How did an old idea from Christian theology get used to explain the hold that political leaders have over crowds? Why is it so important not to confuse charm with charisma? What has made a word from early twentieth-century social science ubiquitous on twenty-first-century dating sites? And if Trump hasn't got charisma, then what has he got? Out now on PPF+: A bonus bad ideas episode in which David and Dan Snow talk about all sorts of ‘decisive battles' that weren't what they seem: Yarmuk, Hastings, Agincourt, Trafalgar, Warsaw 1920, Stalingrad, and more. This week, Monika talks about the rising global war anxiety and how it's triggering panic among investors. As conflicts erupt across the globe, the instinct to pull money out of the markets is growing—but is that the right move? With fears of nuclear escalation, many are tempted to book profits and flee to cash. But Monika explains why the better approach is to stay calm, focus on asset allocation, and avoid impulsive financial decisions driven by headlines. India, despite external threats, remains on a strong economic footing—with 6.5% GDP growth, healthy macro indicators, and strategic restraint. While we cannot control global turmoil, we can build resilient portfolios that are better prepared for long-term uncertainty. She then explains what a "risk asset" really is—investments like stocks or real estate whose prices fluctuate and that carry a risk of capital loss. These stand in contrast to low-risk assets like PPF or fixed deposits, which offer capital protection but lower returns. Monika lays out why investors choose risk assets in the first place: for higher returns over the long term. But she also emphasizes that this risk must be balanced with an appropriate time horizon and the right mix of stable, low-risk assets for peace of mind.In listener questions, Samparth asks whether his ₹50 lakh upfront investment for his child's education is enough and seeks advice on raising financially aware children. Amit wonders why the total expense ratio matters when mutual fund returns are already reported post-cost. Dr. Jayesh Waghulde asks whether he should move from mutual funds to high dividend-yield stocks or stick to a mutual fund strategy after receiving a lump sum.Chapters:(00:31 – 07:33) War clouds, worried investors: What to do when conflict scares you out of the market(07:34 – 08:23) What is a risk asset and why do we choose them anyway?(08:24 – 13:15) Children's education and values: Planning, protecting, and parenting with money(13:16 – 16:13) Do expense ratios matter when returns are already declared?(16:14 – 18:14) Trading vs mutual funds: A reminder to avoid fake profiles and risky shortcutshttps://www.amfiindia.com/investor-corner/knowledge-center/Expense-Ratio.htmlIf you have financial questions that you'd like answers for, please email us at mailme@monikahalan.com Monika's book on basic money managementhttps://www.monikahalan.com/lets-talk-money-english/Monika's book on mutual fundshttps://www.monikahalan.com/lets-talk-mutual-funds/Monika's workbook on recording your financial lifehttps://www.monikahalan.com/lets-talk-legacy/Calculatorshttps://investor.sebi.gov.in/calculators/index.htmlYou can find Monika on her social media @monikahalan. Nová služba má tak generický název, že se špatně hledá v mobilních katalozích.Hlavně pro vás ale může být přechod cenově nevýhodný. Někteří lidé hlásí potíže s vypovězením smlouvy. Today's episode is the second of our two recent live recordings of PPF, this one in front of an audience at the Bath Curious Minds Festival. David talks to historian Robert Saunders about the life of Winston Churchill and all its twists and turns of fortune: from disgrace in WWI, economic disaster in the 1920s, wilderness in the 1930s, through to redemption in 1945 and rejection by the voters in the same year. How to make sense of it all? Is there a thread that connects the ups and downs? Has there ever – anywhere – been another political life like it? Out now on PPF+: David discusses the influence of Marinetti's Futurist Manifesto (1909) – from cars to cod liver oil, from fascism to techno-optimism, from the madness of pre-WWI Europe to the craziness of Silicon Valley today. We take a brief break from revolutionary ideas for a special live episode of PPF recorded in front of an audience at the Regent Street Cinema in London. David talks to writer and journalist Helen Lewis about Network (1976), a film still best remembered for its catchphrase: ‘I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Just how prophetic is that cry of rage in the age of Trump? What does the film say about the continuing power of television in the era of social media? And who or what does it remind us of: Ye, Tucker Carlson, Russell Brand, WWE wrestling… or is it about something else entirely? What changed when he published his theory and why is it, in so many ways, the most revolutionary idea of them all? Today's revolutionary ideas come from China: David talks to historian Julia Lovell about the Taiping Revolution, another massive mid-19th-century upheaval that nearly overturned the established order. How did Christianity inspire an uprising against the Qing dynasty? Was it a revolution or a civil war? What was the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom?

In this episode I speak with a friend of mine, Kirsten Ellis, about her personal and painful experience fleeing the Pacific Palisades fire (PPF). Kirsten has spent her entire life in the beautiful community of the Palisades and is now trying to come to terms with that fact that it was completely decimated and no longer exists as she knew it.We also explore the mindset of native Californian's like Kirsten who have been facing the threat of fire their entire lives, because people who don't live in CA don't understand why us "crazy" people do. In addition, we broke down what went well and what was problematic with evacuations and even give some tips on preparing for the possibility of fires if you live in an area that is at risk. I invited Kirsten to share her story on the podcast because I wanted to hear her account of the PP Fire, so that she can begin to make some sense out of all of it and process the magnitude of emotions she is experiencing as a result of it. It really takes a lot of courage to come on the podcast to share a story as painful as this one so kudos to Kirsten for her willingness to do that! Bradley Johnston grew his detailing business at an INSANE rate There are so many different levels in the detailing industry and nothing wrong with any of them but Bradley with Autoworks Detailing has really showed what you can make of a detailing business in what I would say is a pretty short amount of time. Bradley and I did a podcast episode nearly 2 years ago when he was detailing out of his home garage. Fast forward to today he is now providing his services out of what most would consider a dream detailing facility. He has seen every stage of detailing from being mobile to detailing from his garage to now having a state of the art facility where he offers far more than interior and exterior car detailing. He now offers top tier services such as PPF, window tint, and ceramic coating. Topics we discuss in this episode: ✔️ Is there a cap to just being a mobile detailer? ✔️Offering PPF and window tint to scale to the next level ✔️How health and fitness can keep you and your mind healthy as a business owner ✔️Free marketing before paid marketing I really enjoyed hanging out with Bradley and I know you are going to love what he has to say about his journey in the automotive detailing industry and how he grew his detailing business to what it is today
