Welcome to another episode of Fratello On Air. This week, we hop into our time machine and travel back 10 years to 2016. As we'll see, in some ways, this wasn't so long ago. Yet, in others, it was a different lifetime. Join us as we look back on fonder days.HandgelenkskontrolleIt's been a while since we've recorded, and much of this is down to Mike's travels in Germany. Sadly, on one of the trips, he had a very Balazs-like travel experience involving planes and trains. If he did have a time machine, he'd probably go back and choose to sleep through his alarm that day. We mention an upcoming Sotheby's auction featuring a pair of Michael Jordan's shoes from the Dream Team Barcelona Olympics. Balazs discusses the return of The Night Manager, a show that, coincidentally, has returned after its first season in 2016! For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Balazs is wearing an upcoming release, the Nivada Grenchen F77 MKII. Mike was wearing his Rolex Sea-Dweller 1665 "Great White" in Germany and still has it on his wrist.Taking our time machine back to 2016Yes, it's hard to believe that 2016 was 10 years ago! Time flies! In this episode, we're reminiscing about a year that brought some interesting releases and behavior. Specifically, vintage watches were within a boom period. In particular, a Patek Philippe 1518 sold at Phillips for over CHF 11 million! It was hard for us to believe that watches were achieving these sums a decade ago. Many new watches from back then still feel relatively modern, but there's no doubt that larger diameters and chunkier cases were in vogue. The Blancpain Bathyscaphe Blue and Ceramic is a good example of this, but to be fair, the same basic platform is still in the catalog today. Speaking of big and robust watches, Robert-Jan reviewed the Sinn U212, which still looks fresh. If we truly want to feel old, Tudor was already in its second year of offering non-ETA movements. Omega launched a rare box-office stinker with the blue and white CK2998, a piece that has aged quite well. Our time machine continues its journey and finds the wild Hublot Big Bang Berluti, which was available in gold or steel and showed off a leather dial. Seiko, announced a partnership with PADI. This caused a stir, and several of us on the team grabbed one of the new models. TAG Heuer announced a Monza PVD, a retro chronograph with a thick case. However, we save the most significant announcement for last. Rolex, after producing steel Daytona 116500LN models with a steel bezel for over 25 years, introduced pieces with ceramic bezels. Understandably, the excitement was palpable and hit Basel like a hurricane. We remark that these watches have been unavailable since that time!We hope you enjoy today's episode. Share your watch memories from 2016 in the comments below, and let us know if we forgot any momentous pieces.

A new exhibit at the Nerman Museum in Overland Park packs a punch with ceramic lipsticks, guns, and colorful pastel flowers. Over her five-decade career, Kansas City clay artist Linda Lighton created sculptures that speak to some of the thorniest issues of our time.
photo by Janna Tew Sophie Haulman is a Brooklyn-based ceramicist and sculptor from Wilmington, North Carolina. She received her BFA (2019) from Virginia Commonwealth University's department of Sculpture + Extended Media. While maintaining her practice, she is also a ceramics teacher and works in ceramic production and fabrication. Her evolving work explores the sensuality of space, the body and the unknown through material-based experimentation, contemplation on process, investigation of tactile form, and a constant surrender to fate. “every month grass came” is a contemplation on mortality and the temporary nature of all that we possess – our bodies, relationships, experiences, memories, desires. As beings of the natural world, we evolve, erode, disintegrate; how do we construct a coherent sense of identity from an existence that is ever-changing? These ceramic works question and explore these themes of impermanence, loss, and the unknown through a material which has the capacity to long outlast our own bodies while bearing moments of our time within it. Its physical fragility but potential for permanence challenges the transitory nature of self. Sophie Haulman reflects on the idea of resiliency as crucial to surviving one's evolution. Haulman's work is just as much about the labor and fate of process as it is about the result, considering “process” as both an action and a passage of time. Each piece was handbuilt with slow, methodical, repetitive movements encapsulated within the material body, resulting in forms that question themselves and occlude the transformations of their identities. The title and show are dedicated to Steffan Elijah Haulman, the artist's deceased brother. His photo, seen daily on the side of her refrigerator, is held up by four contemplative word magnets that have become a kind of mantra: every | month | grass | came. There are three main types of nuclear fuel in commercial use today. These are natural uranium, enriched uranium, and mixed oxide or MOX uranium-plutonium mixtures. It is possible to use thorium in a sort of thorium-plutonium or thorium-uranium MOX fuel, but this not currently economically viable at this time when uranium is so cheap and abundant. Spent fuel can be recycled and used in a reactor again. Medical isotopes are an important byproduct of the nuclear industry, and a large share of the world's population has benefited from this at one time or another. 32 Conclusion In the next episode I will describe the basic features and characteristics of reactors together with descriptions of the most widely used commercial reactor types. This concludes the second episode of an 8 part series on nuclear reactor technology. Provide feedback on this episode.

This episode spotlights three themes driving BlueTech's current research cycle. Rhys and Divya open with the momentum behind ceramic membranes, ahead of the 11 December web briefing with Dr. Graham Pearce and the release of BlueTech's Ceramic Membranes 2025 Update. Once a 2% niche, ceramics now claim ~10% of the market, lifted by cost reductions, flat-sheet formats, and the EU's proposed PFAS restrictions that could phase out PVDF. With players like MetaWater, Sōbra, Stech, and Filtech expanding into wastewater and desalination, ceramics are shifting from premium to increasingly mainstream. The episode then moves to BlueTech's Innovation Tracker, highlighting VBact, a 4.5/5 BlueTruffle-rated bacterial scanner offering real-time, AI-driven microbial monitoring at low operating cost. Already deployed in food and beverage, it stands out for continuous phenotypic fingerprinting—though regulatory acceptance remains the key barrier. A full report on bacterial monitoring systems lands next month. Finally, the hosts examine Aurelius' acquisition of Xylem's international metering business, a move TAG experts describe as strategic refocusing. The divestment allows Xylem to double down on software, analytics, and digital twin partnerships, while Aurelius takes on a complex, hardware-heavy portfolio.Together, these threads capture the technology, regulation, and market shifts framing BlueTech's year-end research priorities--Presented by BlueTech Research®, Actionable Water Technology Market Intelligence. The Czech republic is the Pays d'Honneur for this biennial event. De Mains De Maîtres is dedicated to the profound artistry of making things by hand. This, the 5th edition of the biennale, has grown into one of the most prestigious applied Art and Design events in the Greater Region. De Mains de Maîtres was founded in 2016 under the patronage of Their Royal Highnesses, the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess of Luxembourg. The mission is to honour craftsmanship and give visibility to those who shape our world with their hands. In this conversation we will discuss how craftsmanship connects heritage, identity, sustainability, and emotional well-being across generations. It is linked to the materials around us, the conversations and subversions of the day, the need to slow down and connect with our world through our hands and our heads. Artistry of this level is worth elevating, celebrating, respecting and encouraging through our educational system - another theme of the conversation. This year hosts Czechia as the Pays d'Honneur, bringing centuries of glassmaking, ceramics, puppetry and design heritage to Luxembourg. My guests this week are: - Her Excellency, Ambassador Barbara Karpetová, who has been instrumental in coordinating Czechia's participation. - Tom Wirion, Director General of the Chambre des Métiers. - Embroidery artist Yanis Miltgen, whose sculptural textile work has gained international acclaim. - Ceramicist Ellen van der Woude, whose work is influenced by nature, harmony and emotional resonance. Ambassador Barbara Karpetová speaks so eloquently about the changing borders and names of her homeland, and how, throughout this, the language of the artists developed its own conversation with people. The humour that can be spotted in artisans' work through generations of history; the means to remain resilient through periods of political repression. Craft can hold the history and identity of a nation's people. Her Excellency also highlighted the psychological importance of making: the sense of satisfaction in producing something from beginning to end, and the power of craft to reconnect us with our own creativity which is so easily lost in an era of screens and speed. Ambassador Barbara also spoke about the rich material landscape of ‘Bohemia' which easily allowed the arts of certain genres to flourish, such as glass-making. On the Luxembourg side, Tom Wirion, Director General of the Chambre des Métiers, underscored how essential the craft sector is to the country's cultural landscape. Tom noted that one of the greatest challenges remains perception: encouraging young people (and parents) to view skilled trades as a stable, innovative, and rewarding career path. “Buying a crafted object,” he explained, “means investing in a gesture, not just a product.” His vision is to make artisans visible, valued, and actively supported through new pathways, partnerships, and gallery collaborations. And naturally the educational system has to allow this subject to shine more too. Ceramic artist Ellen van der Woude, formerly a lawyer, turned to ceramics after personal loss and found profound therapeutic power in clay. Her sculptures embrace movement, tension, harmony, and imperfection: an homage to nature's organic balance. For this edition, she presents three works inspired by the transition from winter to spring, reminding us that renewal follows even the longest winters. Ellen's own confidence in realising that she was indeed an artist only settled once she won the Jury Prize in the first edition of De Mains de Maîtres. She went on to win numerous other awards since. Yanis Miltgen, at just 24 years, found embroidery at the age of 15. Like Ellen, he found working with his hands and mind to be therapy as he had panic attacks at school. Yanis has won the most prestigious embroidery prize (just last week in London); the Hand & Lock Prize. He also won “Les de(ux) mains” Prize from the Comité Colbert (which is ‘the voice of luxury in France). Yanis has brought embroidery to an entirely new level of textile sculptural artistry, merging embroidery with metal, silicone, and reclaimed materials. His pieces, often requiring hundreds of hours, push the boundaries of what textile art can be: scientific in process, poetic in effect. We are reminded at the end by Ambassador Karpetová that even we, as customers, continue this line of artisan appreciation, as we observe the flow of an artists hands' into our homes, or gifting to a loved one. The continuity of time and art, heritage and thought, all combined. These are the things of divine creation which we can contemplate. To stand amongst these curated pieces, visit De Mains De Maîtres 20th to 23rd of November, 10am to 6.30pm, no entrance fee at 19 Avenue de la Liberté. In this podcast, we're breaking down one of the most confusing topics in all of car care — the difference between a waterless wash, a rinseless wash, a detail spray, a spray wax, a ceramic detail spray, and a true ceramic spray coating. There are so many products that seem to do the same thing, but each one actually serves a very different purpose — and if you don't understand those differences, you'll waste time, money, and effort without getting the results you want. I'll explain each one in simple, easy-to-understand terms — when to use them, what they actually do, and how to know which one is best for your situation. I'll also share the truth about why so many new products exist in the first place, and how companies made things confusing instead of just fixing the real problem: making ceramic sprays easier to use. By the end, you'll understand exactly what each product does, how they fit together, and why I created Tough As Shell — a ceramic spray that applies as easily as a detail spray but gives you the long-lasting protection of a true ceramic coating. At the University of Nevada, Reno, the Ceramic Society opens its doors twice each semester, inviting students from all backgrounds to paint their own pottery. What starts as a fun, hands-on art project soon becomes much more, a fundraiser to help students attend the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA). This event takes them far beyond the classroom to explore the world of ceramics, creativity, and community. Amanda Avilla reports.
Can you actually polish a ceramic coated car, or does that completely remove the coating? In this episode, I break down the truth about polishing coated paint and why any abrasion — no matter how light — can affect or remove your ceramic coating, regardless of brand. I'll also explain how this challenge led me to develop Picture Perfect Polish, a polish that finishes clean enough to apply a ceramic coating right over it without waiting hours or doing extra prep. That means if you ever need to correct a coated panel, fix a scratch, or spot-polish your paint, you can handle it fast and recoat immediately with The Gloss Boss or Tough As Shell. By the end, you'll know exactly how to safely polish, correct, and re-coat your ceramic coated vehicle without turning it into a weekend-long project. It was a wonderful trip and we got to meet and talk to a lot of fantastic people from around the world. This week is no different as we meet a married couple that met in a lab, married, and now own a lab. Agata Bak is from Poland but went to London to find more opportunities for dental technology. Iman Ansari is from Iran and also ended up in London. They both worked at the same lab and it took Iman a while to win Agata over, but he did, and they fell in love. After getting married and working at a few other labs, they put everything on the line and opened Black Pearl Dental Lab (https://www.instagram.com/agatabak.dt/reels/?hl=am-et) where they specialize in high end fixed work. Then we meet the past President of exocad (https://exocad.com/) North America Larry Bodony. Larry recently retired but still stopped by to tell us the awesome story on how he got the job when at IDS 2011. Taking a chance on a new design software and them taking a chance on Larry, set into motion of growing exocad in North America. It took time and work, but soon exocad was gaining popularity. Larry talks about those early years, his use of "reverse" tradeshows, and now that he is retired, working with another new exciting software Bite Finder (https://bite-finder.com/?v=0b3b97fa6688). In this episode I'm breaking down one of the most confusing and overhyped topics in the detailing world right now—Triphene vs Graphene vs Ceramic Coatings. What even is Triphene? Is Graphene really better than ceramic? And do any of these coatings actually do what they say on the label—or are they just buzzwords made to sell you more bottles? I've tested it all—from pro-grade ceramics to “next-gen” graphene sprays—and in this episode, I'll walk you through: What each of these technologies really is (without the hype) How ceramic coatings like SiO2 actually work Whether graphene adds any real benefit or is just marketing What Triphene might be (and what it probably isn't) What actually matters when choosing a coating for your vehicle I'll also share the behind-the-scenes story of how I developed Tough As Shell and Gloss Boss—my two go-to coatings built for real-world results, not buzzwords. If you've ever been confused about which coating is best—or just want a no-BS take on what's legit—this episode is for you.
